University of Mind Control
Part 1.1
Jenna Kaplan checked her phone for what seemed like the millionth time. 11:58. She fidgeted with the opal pendant around her neck, the one she usually only brought out for special occasions because of how valuable it was. If she played with it properly, it was perfect for drawing and keeping attention, but right now she was too keyed up to make the movements slow and hypnotic.
Two minutes had never felt so long. She checked the pile of suitcases around her again - the letter had said the stuff would go straight to her room, but she’d packed it all in suitcases anyway, just in case. With the best locks she could afford, too, though that probably didn’t stop magic. Or a set of bolt cutters. It was the best she could do, though.
11:59. Jenna really, really hoped this would work. It wasn’t like she hadn’t demanded proof after the acceptance letter, and she’d gotten plenty, but… it was just such a wild idea that she still couldn’t quite believe it properly. Shouldn’t there be some, some interuniversal ethics review board that would shut down a “University for Mind Control”?
She snorted. Yeah, maybe that shouldn’t be her first critique of the situation, but still.
She felt so unprepared, too - she wished there were some sort of Diagon Alley for this, so she could’ve studied her textbooks in advance. She had no idea about magic or telepathy, and the technology of Earth might well be primitive compared to some of the other students. Or it might be the most advanced, for all she knew, but she didn’t think she’d be that lucky. So really all she had to work with was hypnosis and “raw telepathic ability” that she had no idea how to use.
12:00. Jenna’s fidgeting stopped completely when she saw the numbers turn, and her stomach dropped. Nothing was happening. Nothing was happening, and she’d been scammed or something and she’d have to figure out how to fix this mess and she’d been so sure and-
And she was somewhere different. She was still standing above her luggage, but now it was lying on a plush green carpet. There was a bed in front of her carved out of something like ebony in a strange swirling style that Jenna instantly loved. It was also a bed that could easily fit two people, which was somewhat unexpected. But it was also already made, so at least she didn’t need to worry about having brought the wrong sheet set.
She turned around to look at the rest of the room. It was beautiful, and far larger than expected, and… and there was a bed on the opposite wall from hers, in front of which stood a girl surrounded by a few boxes, presumably her own belongings.
Crap. Jenna hadn’t known they were going to have roommates. She hadn’t shared a room with anyone in years, and she’d been hoping to set up a home base in her own private space, which apparently wouldn’t be happening.
Double crap. She’s hot. The girl was stunning, with black hair sweeping down to her waist and a face that was so perfect that she wasn’t sure if it had makeup beyond the ruby-red lips. There was no way anyone could naturally be that pretty. Right?
Then Jenna noticed that the girl had horns. Literal, honest-to-god curved red horns poking out slightly from her hair. And now that she looked more closely, that black dress wasn’t just especially flowy in the back, as she’d originally thought. They were tucked away, but the girl definitely had wings which were definitely not of the feathery angel type.
The girl - Jenna refused to call her a demon, no matter how much she looked like one - smiled slowly, revealing pointed incisors.
Triple crap.
