So I was just thinking today. I think they should do in Muppets cartoon that gears a little more towards adults but still kids, and leans into the more subversive humor without trying too hard. I've seen so much cool art on here and I think in the styles it would attract a lot of different folks. Then simultaneously also have actual Muppet puppet show where the cartoon supplements it.
I think writers from New Zealand and Australia who have a background in comedy i.e. Flight of the Conchords and other Waititi-adjacent works would adapt the property fantastically. Shit, they already have Brett McKenzie doing music for the movies. Jemaine is literally in it, too. I don't even say this as a former OFMD fan, their humor just works so well with the Muppets (obviously they saw some of the vision recruiting Bret.) Tell me Rhys Darby isn't the perfect regular. That man is a Muppet.
And make it timeless rather than leaning SO hard into current technology and trends. Just be weird and have a lot of heart, be experimental like Jim. Let your actors play. Put the characters somewhere weird. We just want to see these guys in situations, it doesn't even have to be a big, overarching story. Start fresh, break everything down to its basic parts and rebuild it in a unique way. Do some more literature adaptions that aren't parodies! It's like they think if they show an ounce of sincerity they'll explode (actually I'd love to see some classic Muppet explosions lol) That's one of the things that drives me crazy about a lot of media these days, they're allergic to unironic sincerity.
Anyway, as much as I love Disney, I loathe what they're doing with the Muppets property. They're trying to cater to the wrong people. They think they know trends and where the money is, but I wholeheartedly disagree.
