#I transcribed some letters I photographed in the Hardwicke and Newcastle MSS today#and this one genuinely hit me in the heart#because Newcastle added this at the end of a letter to Charles#telling him how excited he was to see that Hardwicke was feeling better#but Hardwicke died only a few months later#and all of their contemporaries say that Newcastle was never the same after he lost Hardwicke#he died himself less than 5 years later#(welcome to my job. wherein these guys aren’t even what I speacialize in. but if you spend enough time with someone’s letters. you are#bound to get emotionally destroyed. even by 18th century Whig politicians. actually especially by them.
