#I transcribed some letters I photographed in the Hardwicke and Newcastle MSS today #and this one genuinely hit me in the heart #because Newcastle added this at the end of a letter to Charles #telling him how excited he was to see that Hardwicke was feeling better #but Hardwicke died only a few months later #and all of their contemporaries say that Newcastle was never the same after he lost Hardwicke #he died himself less than 5 years later #(welcome to my job. wherein these guys aren’t even what I speacialize in. but if you spend enough time with someone’s letters. you are #bound to get emotionally destroyed. even by 18th century Whig politicians. actually especially by them.
