Some thoughts about my hopes and expectations of HOTD season 2.
I want blood and cheese to be really horrific, I want some great Helaena stuff here and in the aftermath. I am still wondering about whether they will include maelor or not- if they don't, it'll change things quite a bit so I hope he's there, and that he ends up having a similar death to in the book. (That sounds horrible to say about a two year old but yes, the kids' deaths were the thing which stuck most in my head from the dance of the dragons).
There are lots of little moments for aegon I would like- horrid things he does like hanging all the ratcatchers, and moments like him tipping ink all over otto :) you know, some fun stuff before he gets all burned and mashed up. That being said, it'll be interesting to see how much they actually go in for disfiguring him and serious injuries and stuff. In GOT they often shied away from that sort of thing, but they went in for it with viserys so who knows?
Talking of, it would be great if half of aegon's face is burned and he uses vis's mask! Give me aegon and viserys parallels! Him firing otto i want to feel exactly the same as when viserys did it! Alicent having to care for a bedbound aegon- can you imagine if he said "aren't you going to help me?" at some point like viserys in I think ep 6??
But yes, I think tbf they will probably be having aegon and rhaenyra (and alicent) playing a more active role in the war in the show than they do at this stage in fire and blood, when they are both grief stricken and recovering from a physical trauma. In the book, it was mostly jace, daemon, aemond and criston controlling things at this stage, but I don't think they'd make alicent and rhaenyra in particular inactive. I do hope we get a glimpse of regent aemond though!
I would also love to have seen some Joffrey (particularly as Joff is canonically at this point very eager to play his part and to avenge his brother) and Aegon the Younger and Viserys II stuff, but I think it will be limited. I think I remember something one of the showrunners said which indicated they won’t be featuring the latter two much. I reckon season 3 is when they will start being properly featured, and they’ll cast new actors for them and stuff. That does beg the question though… what about the battle of the gullet and aegon and viserys’s role in that?
Because I do think that will almost definitely be in this season. Before rereading the relevant section of fire and blood I wasn’t sure, but I think, if not, it will leave too much to be covered in the last two seasons. (I was also thinking during my reread that rhaenyra taking king’s landing would be a really good season-ender, but if they were going to cover that much content, this season would definitely be 10 eps. It seems strange that something like that would be a mid or early season event, but I think it might well be.) The gullet seems like a good final episode, and it would be a fun pattern if each season ends with one of rhaenyra’s sons dying- Luke for the first, Jace for the second, and joff for the third- and then the final season ending with a son of hers (Aegon III) becoming king.
But yeah, I wonder if the Battle of the Gullet will be done differently, with aegon and viserys’s role minimised? If so that’s a shame.
But yes, other than that it’s going to be interesting to see stuff like the sowing of the seeds, daemon in harrenhal, aemond and alys and stuff, the battle of rook’s rest, Jace in winterfell (which I hope and think they’re going to do a lot with, even though sadly it’s looking like there’s no Sara snow)… It’s going to be a fun season!
