and the center spike of the crown is glowing brighter than the others and making me nervous...

(it's grown significantly, too, even since the start of this scene -- he's starting to get a little halo thing.)

also since analysis has been sidetracked by OH RIGHT IT'S TWO WEEKS TILL FINALS, here are some of my notes:

twin suns on the shoulderpads -- depending on how he angles himself, is he the lake? (in the original text they sink behind it; project gutenberg gives beneath.)

arguably kind of cloudy fluffy coat bits (although they've gotten rained on now)

also: note that he seems to have grown the sun shoulderpads and their attached little triangle thing at the back (I don't know what to call it lol), even though the rest of his outfit could have come from his life as a king

he's got a combination of beauty and decadence/decay that fits how "The Repairer of Reputations" (which is my favorite of the original stories and the one I'm most qualified to talk about offhand) and also the loosely-connected "The Demoiselle d'Ys" feel when you read them and how they portray their worlds

I'm saving the mask for later (because there's a lot I want to get right there and I'll have to talk about memory/how it works in him/"and my mind would bear forever the memory of the Pallid Mask")

the doll/porcelain look he's got is interesting too -- I can't think of anything in the original stories which would be a source for it

also comparing Hildred's regnal getup will be fun
