i'm pretty sure it's a northern thing to use a plural possessive pronoun when referring to someone you're fond of over here. (i'm basing that knowledge off the fact that my dad is from the north east) so it makes sense to me that simon coming from manchester (the north west) would do the same!

and now you've got me thinking about a scenario where johnny hears simon say "where's our gaz then?" in the rec room enough times that it just slips out one day when he asks gaz "seen our ghostie?" (kyle, bless him, is left feeling just a little bit confused because huh? our ghost? nah mate, more like your ghost)

but yep, bit of an odd linguistic quirk if you've not encountered it before and easily misunderstood!

do you have any advise for finding beta readers? i'm currently 20k words deep in a wip and have no idea where to even start 😅 i would post an advert, but i'm worried that won't get the reach i would like because i'm not very engaged in the hp fandom. any advice would be much appreciated!!

Discord (if you don't have one, I highly recommend it)

If you write drarry, the Drarry Discord Server (18+) is an incredible resource! You can request alpha/beta help in the 'planning-editing-help' channel, which is full of people who would be happy to help. Just briefly describe your project and the kind of feedback you're looking for.

I've also found betas for non-drarry ships in there, too, so it's not strictly drarry. That said, there are other discord servers if you are looking for something different:

HP SAFFICS (18+) for wlw ships ('alpha-beta-britpick' channel)

HP Fanfic Writers' Guild for any ship and also a greater variety of resources for writers ('trade-room')

If you're participating in a fest, many of them have their own servers where you can request beta help as well! Usually their tumblr accs will post a link to the fest discord.

I frequently beta for other writers (see my treatment post), and there are several of us on tumblr who will happily take beta requests. My fandom life is really full right now, so I might be limited in how much I could help with, but anyone who feels comfortable being asked to beta is welcome to comment on this post as well!

When his lonely Christmas Eve is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of his ex-boyfriend, Louis, Harry is hesitant to believe that it’s fate. What begins as a series of random coincidences slowly morphs into an evening of second chances and holiday miracles and peppermint-flavoured kisses that could change Harry’s future forever.

The author did such a good job with the melancholy in this fic. It’s very soft and a little bit sad and features the “exes to lovers” trope the only way it should be served: with a happy ending.

A different type of holiday romance. Very tender and soft but with a sadness throughout. The author really makes you feel with the characters. Make sure to read the tags on this one!

There’s not much going on for me in terms of writing haha unfortunately school continues to drain all of my thoughts and energy

1) Sequel to edge of seventeen: Currently sitting at 30k and entirely illegible! I may have bitten off more than I can chew here, in terms of multiple timelines, multiple protagonists, espionage plots... I’ve definitely bitten off more than I have time for right now! I just got another ask looking for it and I’m gonna say again: if it happens it’s gonna be years from now. Sorry.

2. Only other thing in the works rn is a much much shorter fic for We Are Lady Parts. About saira my beloved and eventually saira/amina. Obviously. Only person who’s seen that so far is my sister. If I do end up publishing that I’d probably want to send it to a friend for britpicking at least—those girls use so much slang!

Belloq’s Tent, Dig Site at Tanis.  Almost dawn.

Crowley downs his third glass of brandy, feeling the burn as it runs down his throat.  He’s still perfectly sober, but making a show of not being.  Belloq has devolved from one rant to the other, finally settling on Nazis in general.

“I don’t even want to work with them, they’re just the only ones taking me seriously!  Even then, they really aren’t.”

“Facist regimes usually only take themselves seriously.  Big reason why they happen.  It’s all me, me, me, I, I, I and off they go.”  Crowley gestures broadly as he speaks, playing up the motion, creating a false sense of security.

“You must’ve seen quite a few of them.”

“In my experience,” Crowley says, adding a hiss into the word for effect, “humans are pretty much all the same.  You’ve seen one regime, you’ve seen them all.”

“The knowledge of humanity you must have.  I wonder how many history books have it wrong?”

“Ah- here, let me,” Crowley extends a hand and Belloq passes him the bottle.  “You’d be surprised how much they get right, actually.  And how much of what’s right they say is false.”  He pours himself another glass, tops off Belloq’s when he extends it out.  “King Arthur, for example: great fella.  Bit too great, spreading his good will all over the bloody place.”

“King Arthur was real?”

“Oh yeah, whole thing.  Lady of the Lake and all that nonsense.  Dinosaurs, though.  Completely fake.  Big cosmic joke, that one.”

“Astounding.  You could completely rewrite human history!”  Belloq exclaims as he throws back his liquor.  Crowley laughs and makes a show of spilling his glass.  “Oops,” Belloq slurs at him, devolving into laughter of his own.

Crowley watches the brandy at the edge of the circle as it streaks the red paint where it drags through it.  He sighs and cracks his spine, feeling his power start to trickle back.  Be a few minutes yet before it’s enough for him to break out, but not much longer.

Crowley passes the bottle back with a smirk, tosses his own back again.  It’s good, better than a lot of the swill he had in Nepal.  “This is some good stuff.” Crowley downs the little bit left in his glass.  “Where’d you get it anyway?”

“I grew up with this,” Belloq is, at this point, unable to even sit up straight.  Swaying from side to side, face red and splotchy.  All according to plan.  “It’s my family label!”

Crowley can feel the tingle of hellish power creeping back to the center of him.  Spreading along his fingers and toes, up the lines of his bones.  A dark and creeping thing.  Spooky.  Like the chill you get in a dilapidated old house.  The feel of something foreboding.  He almost has enough to break through.  The barrier is weakening.

“Tell me more, demon—“

“The name’s Crowley, if you don’t mind.”

“Right, Crowley,” Belloq corrects himself and leans forward to pour Crowley another glass.  “What about the Bible?  How much of it is wrong?”

“The Heaven should I know?  I’m a demon, I can’t even touch those.”

“Ah, sorry, silly assumption.”

“Just a bit,” Crowley says with more than a hint of offense.  He’s still not over the time Aziraphale left an old misprinted copy on the sofa in the back room.  Hadn’t been able to sit for weeks after that.

A dead silence falls between the two of them.  Belloq still sways a bit where he sits, knocks back another glass, leaving the bottle nearly empty.  The creeping dark continues, the four points of it meeting in the center of Crowley’s chest.  He does a quick test, snaps his fingers behind his back, feeling the sparks light there.

He snaps again and the paint on the floor evaporates from around him.  In one smooth motion he lunges for the bottle, smashes it on the edge of the table and brandishes it in Belloq’s face.  A shift in ozone, just a bit of demonic energy, and the edges of the glass glow with heat and hellfire.

“You!” Belloq exclaims, looking behind him to the rug.  “How!”

“Notice your fancy jewelry is missing, what’s up with that?”

“I-I-“ Belloq’s eyes keep darting behind him as Crowley slowly backs towards the tent flap.

“Not so powerful without it, eh?”  Crowley smirks at him.  Humans are so fucking easy when the cards are played right.  “I really must be going now.  Was a fun time!  Maybe we’ll meet again on a better occasion.”

Crowley turns to make his escape, manifesting his wings.  Great black feathers fill the tent, more void than true color, blocking out the scant amount of light that remains.  He ducks out and kicks off the ground into the breaking dawn light, taking to the sky to search for Aziraphale.  A hill just to the west, a lightning strike and that telltale divinity in the air.  Gotcha.

He has about five seconds to pat himself on the back before he’s frozen in midair.

For betas – I personally ask friends. If you don’t have any friends in a particular fandom or you’re new, etc etc, that can be harder, but not impossible!

I have before just straight up made a tumblr post in the appropriate tags being like ‘Hey, I’m writing a fic about XYZ, would anyone want to beta it? Looking for someone to check ABC. Please PM/IM/etc me’

If you wanted to make one and then link it to me, I’m happy to reblog.

There are also blogs that help people out with this, although I’m not sure of the success rate of them – things like @betareaderwanted or @needabeta – and the #BetaReader hashtag on twitter is quite well populated.

On a bit of a tangent, it’s also worth thinking about what you want from a beta, because it will affect what kind of person you want to beta.

Do you want someone to check your English and SPAG? Plotholes? 'Britpicking’ or other cultural knowledge and sensitivities? Do you want someone who will actively chat with you as you’re writing and help you hash things out?

For example, @tell-themstories and I read each other’s stuff. For her fic, we discuss what might happen in scenes as she’s writing it and I do line edits and grammar for her. I generally don’t do plotline and characterisation because she’s got a better handle on those than I do.

For me, I prefer my beta to have the experience as a reader so I usually show her my work at like 80, 90% completed, so it’s more of a vibe check, and I highlight specific sentences or bits I’m not sure of and edit from there.

Being up front about what you want from a beta and putting it in your request, gives you both a better idea of expectations from them.

Hi! I've just begun writing Beatles fic and I was wondering if you had any tips or resources as far as finding a beta reader. Normally I'd just ask a friend but in this fandom britpicking and fact checking is so very important.

Yay, and welcome! I’m afraid I don’t have any Beatles-specific resources for finding a beta on tumblr (the last time I had a beta was back in the Livejournal days, so, uhhhh, it’s been a second!), but if you have any Beatles fandom community blogs you follow, you could ask if they’d boost a post from your blog? Or post in the tags of whichever pairing you’re writing for?

(also, hi, lovely followers! If anyone is looking to do some Beatles fic beta-reading, shoot quixoticquest a message! signal boost!)

But my actual recommendation would be to do your best with a couple of fics, post them on AO3, and include in the author notes at the end that you’re looking for a beta and/or Brit-picker. That way you’d get people who are active readers in the fic community (and possibly also writers, who often make for the good betas, since they know the kinds of issues that crop up from their own experience). (And you can always go back later and edit stuff in the fics you’ve posted, if you learn about things you want to change/avoid as you go on.)

(I recommend putting the note at the end rather than the beginning, just because “this wasn’t beta-read” isn’t the main thing you want people to be thinking about when they start reading. Let them focus on the story as-is first! And if they end it thinking, hey, that was great, but I wish Ringo had said “bro” less, well, great! They can shoot you a message and offer their beta skills.) 

But most importantly, I recommend having a discussion before you send them anything to make sure the two of you are on the same page about what kind of things you want them to be providing feedback on: only Brit-picking and fact-checking stuff? Or do you want their thoughts on the content, the characterization, and so forth? Do you want corrections on general grammar stuff, too? What are they comfortable/confident providing, and what do you want them to provide? Clear communication of expectations on BOTH sides is the key to a productive relationship with a beta reader, in my experience!

(And, tbh, at the end of the day, if you don’t find someone, I recommend you just post it anyway! (1) It’s fic, it’s for fun, everyone makes mistakes, and while the historical details are a lot of the fun of Beatles fic, as long as you enjoyed writing it, it was worth writing, and it will find readers who will also enjoy it; and (2) the more Beatles content you consume—by which I mean, in this case, recordings of them and things actually written by them—the easier it will get to internalize their voices, which will help you keep them in character and avoid Americanisms automatically, even without a beta or Brit-picker.)

Don’t Want Shelter because it’s the first fic I put emotional effort into. That universe, that Harry and Louis, all of it are very vivid and alive in my head. I love them.

Depends. Writing doesn’t usually take me long but editing does.

I don’t usually, but sometimes. Idk that I have a normal. I really prefer to be alone and quiet.

Get a beta. But not just a beta. Get someone who can talk fic/plot/story with you as well.

Very in some ways, no at all in others. I tag mainly for readers so they know enough about the fic to decide whether or not to read. I don’t tag specific sex stuff usually though every now and then I’ll throw in ‘anal fingering’ just to mix it up. I don’t tag who tops/bottoms. I do tag with fic reccers in mind thanks to B’s @nottooldforthisship instructions!

9. Do you write for fests/exchanges? If so, do you enjoy them? If not, why not?!

I have and I do but not often. I like running them and I have done exchanges in the past but it’s not really my thing to write for them. Is that weird? I feel like it is but ehhh

I don’t write them. As in even my fics that have been posted as WIPs (DWS and HFL) we’re completely finished aside from some editing before I started posting. I change too much when I write. That padlock in TSHU? Thought of it at the end and went back to add it to the beginning.

I will sometimes read a WIP but not often. Mainly because I don’t remember anything between updates

Answers and questions under the cut!

Has your writing changed now from the way it was when you started? If so, how? Um...I think it’s changed a bit. For one thing, I wrote het fics, but other than that I think my sentence shaping has really changed. Or at least I hope it has because some of my old stuff seems pretty simple.

Does anyone IRL know about your writing? If so, have they read it? Yeah. There are a lot of people who know that I’ve written, including my kids, but only one that I know of that’s actually read my stuff and it’s just a couple of my fics.

Is there anything you’ve written that you wish you hadn’t? Not really. I mean, I have a few things I don’t love, but I’m not ashamed of them or anything.

Do you have a set location or setting that you have to write in? A favourite cafe? The only seat that’s comfortable? I honestly love to write at work, but I’m not allowed to do that anymore (at least not on the computer) so I don’t really have a fave place. I do a lot of it kicked back on the sofa with my computer in my lap though (which is where I’m at right now).

What are you working on? If you can (i.e., it’s not on anon!), share five lines! Geez...this is hard, I have so many wips, but the one that I’ve been focusing on mostly the last few days is my Author/PA fic:  Zayn only hesitated a second before jumping to his feet to follow Liam. He suspected the only way to get Liam to accept his presence was to keep underfoot, at least for a little while. He made it to the foyer in time to see Liam disappear behind the stairs he’d been sitting on when he’d first seen him. Following, he discovered another smaller set of stairs that led into a large home office, the walls lined with books. He wanted to take it all in but was distracted by Liam as his arms flailed momentarily before he glared down at the papers strewn about the office; he was clearly not a neat person.

Have you ever written something for a fic, but ended up removing a whole scene in its entirety and using it for something else? I’ve written later scenes for fics and the story is changed so much by the time I got there that it didn’t fit anymore, but I’ve never used them in something else before. They usually just sit around, but I guess maybe one day.

Are you a linear writer? Or can you write scenes out of order and put them together at the end? I’m mostly linear, but occasionally I will write a later scene. Unfortunately, when I do that, they usually end up like the previous question.

Betas/Britpickers… opinions? I love my betas. They are amazing. I’ve never used a Britpicker, but I’m not against the idea.

How much do/can you write on average at any given time? I’m currently trying to write at least 500 words a day, but sometimes I can write about to several thousand at a time - it all depends on inspiration.

How organised are you? Do you have lists and/or spreadsheets, or do you just wing it? Well, I’m organized when it comes to my daily counts, but my actual writing is usually a pretty big mess. Although, when I was writing Moments, I did have a realtimeboard going here.

What made you start writing? Um...I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. As far as writing fan fic, just ideas popping into my head after reading other peoples’ work.

Nicknames: I technically go by my nickname Tilly IRL (though not everyone knows it's a nickname), online I've been called Kat, i have also reported to apple, thing, other friends names and anything else @wintersummer1 has called me when she's forgotten my name

Last movie i saw: I know i saw The Greatest Showman over Christmas and i can't remember if i saw anything else more recenty

Last thing i googled: innocent smoothies for a britpicking question

Favourite musician: gah... Umm... Brandon Urie (Panic! At the Disco) uhh... Sometimes not always it changes, i spent a month listening to muse non-stop and have done similar things with other bands/artisits

Song in head: currently Whole World In Hands (wtf is that songs name???) Due to it being in a CM episode that I'm watching, this changes all the time

Amount of sleep: last night about 17 hours (im ill and it was a Saturday its allowed) normally about 3-4 hours

Lucky number: depends on what for, multiples of 4 are good

What im wearing: a grey polka dot dress

Dream job: uhh i normally say building computers

Dream trip: id love to go by boat to Iceland (i went before but it was a school trip and i spent a lot of time on a coach), i would also like to go travelling around Europe by train with time to stop in as many places as i wanted (i went to Helsinki this way a couple of years ago however there wasn't really time to enjoy the intervening stops)

Favourite Food: Vegan Pizza!!!! (There are some good vegan cheeses that work on pizza! It's one of the few things i miss from stopping eating dairy) well not vegan dairy free

Play any instruments: i played piano for 10 years when i was a kid and I've sung in various choirs (im still in one) im slowly teaching myself to play the guitar

Languages: im only fluent in English, i learnt Spanish, German, French and Latin ant school but the only one i still use at all regularly is Latin (HP spells)

Favourite songs: uhh changes from day to day

Random fact: I'm this was hard, i miss my cats all the time while im at uni
