EPILOGUE

For the better party of his thirty years, Rafael imagined leaving the weight of his inheritance behind. Just shy of thirty-one years old, he gets his wish. The family dynasty crumbles, and Rafael can barely sift through the ashes before he boards a plane to Tokyo, Japan. It is too late for his father, his Horseman - but it is not too late for him. Rafael Senior makes it known, and makes it so. You are free, his father says, through a smuggled smartphone from behind the cold cell. The Femenias’ many assets are collected and prosecuted, with what remains of Rafael’s considerably smaller fortune hidden away in an offshore account.

The first five years since the end of times run by in a blur. Settled into Tsuchiura City, Rafael spends the first few years grieving. Kitty’s death, the prosecution of his father, and the heart attack of his mother come swiftly (as tragedy often does). He finds solace in the quiet country life Ikki builds for them. Rafael Nakamura (his name changed, to avoid the tarnish and danger of the Femenias name) walks the small city for miles and miles. After a life of only ever running forward, he feels what it’s like to settle.

Rafael and Ikki wed in late March, 2028 in a private ceremony with the Nakamura clan and the Reyes’ in attendance. Years later, they have two children: Kitty Nakamura (FC: Shiori Kutsuna) and Rafael Nakamura Junior (FC: Taylor Zakhar Perez).

Now, Rafael spends his days as a stay-at-home-father and ‘trophy husband.’ His life is smaller now, and his kids may never know the grandeur of the Femenias Estate. But the scattered, broken pieces of their lives come together to build something new.

On the fourth of February 2021, the Femenias cousins and Ikki Nakamura make their way to the Femenias Energy HQ in Canary Wharf for a press conference to announce the newest development in the company. Printed on loose-leaf sheets within media kits or scrolled through in the body of emails is a press release that will make its way onto the front page of major publications within the hour. It reads as follows:

Ikki Nakamura appointed as Femenias Energy Interim CEO

LONDON, U.K. — FEBRUARY 4, 2021. Femenias Energy’s Board of Directors announced today that Rafael Femenias Sr., Femenias Energy CEO, will be taking a temporary leave of absence from his duties, effective immediately, in order to recuperate at home following a minor operation. 

Femenias Sr. will be on leave for approximately one (1) month, after which he will return to duty on a limited basis. He is expected to make a full recovery.

During this time, Ikki Nakamura will step in as Interim CEO, temporarily relinquishing his role as Senior Advisor while retaining his own seat on the Board.

An experienced business leader, and Senior Advisor to the company since 2016, Nakamura will succeed Femenias Sr. and assume his responsibilities throughout his recovery.

“Ikki is a trusted voice at Femenias Energy, with a sharp mind and unparalleled knowledge of our business,” said COO Rafael Femenias Jr. “Until my father returns to work, rest assured that, with our acting CEO and the Board working together, the company is in capable hands.”

“I am grateful to the Board of Directors for appointing me to this position. I am confident that we can keep Femenias Energy working at full strength until Mr. Femenias is ready to return,” said Nakamura. “We all wish him a speedy recovery and a restful time with his family.”

Nakamura has worked at Femenias Energy since 2012 and has seen the company through its most profitable years in the past two decades. He graduated from Oxford University.

Rafael & Ikki’s New Home 2 (Listing/Pics Here)

Kandachimachi Minka Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Pref.

Located west of the rapidly growing Tsukuba city, and east of the Kasumigaura bay (second largest lake in Japan), this traditional Minka is only about one hour train ride away from Ueno Tokyo. While it was built in the late 80s, the main house has been modernized with the the latest amenities whilst retaining the character and history of the Building. The traditional Japanese elements such as the Tokonoma, Shoin, Kamoi, Ranma, Tategu fittings, Shinkabe and plastered walls are all maintained in fine condition.

After managing to leave London without getting caught Rafael & Ikki head to Japan. Due to Ikki being a Japanese citizen, and Japan having no extradition treaties with the UK he has little to worry about, with most of his assets in tact (though the battle to extradite him is likely news for a while). However, since Rafael has to lay low for a while they decide to not move to Tokyo, instead to move to a more rural location settled outside of a different city, Tsuchiura. While the house they decide to buy is generally not what either of them are used to, they slowly decorate it to fit their style over the years, it's an extremely nice traditional Japanese house, with a lot of land. While it takes them both some time to get back on track, and Rafael in particular will never reach what he used to have (not to say anything about the pain of the loss of his family), they do okay. (important note: Rafael’s dog, and Ikki’s birds end up picked up by Ikki’s sister, Aya, and brought to Japan where they all live happily).

the short-lived drive from the femenias estate to rafael's new home is spent picking at his nails relentlessly. being called to the estate by rafael snr alone was a pretty good indicator of what was coming, but he still feels uncomfortable when he walks back into the bedroom he shares with his husband. and how eery it is, to have the audacity to feel awkward when facing your own spouse. ravi feels pretty stupid.

he walks in with a quiet greeting, closes the door behind him but lingers close to it. he watches marcus, with the usual amount of overwhelming love pouring from his eyes, but some hesitance this time, too. of course this wouldn't be easy. it's unfair of marcus to let his anger bleed out between the two of them, but ravi tries his best to understand that this is an opportunity he's chased after since he was a kid, and that it can't be fun to watch someone else snatch it away. and as much as ravi didn't ask for this, he's proud of himself for getting it, too. he won't make himself any smaller to appease his husband, but he doesn't want to push him away, either; marriage is a delicate line to walk.

"you don't have to fake it. not in front of me." that goes without saying, of course, but he still wants to put it out there. he'd rather handle a furious marcus and know what he's dealing with, than see his husband shut down behind a cold HR smile. he moves over to the vanity table set in the corner, starts shedding the decorative rings adorning his fingers when he pauses to admire the ring that sits alone on his left hand, always too important of a centrepiece to have any accessories by it. "it won't come between us. will it?" it's equal parts a demand and a plea, and he looks back up at marcus. there it is, the one and only thing that would ever make him reconsider this promotion. he can handle marcus' anger, he can handle disappointment, he can even handle if marcus wants to break things and punch walls and have a childish meltdown. he can handle anything, as long as it doesn't mean marcus stops loving him, at the end of the line. "sleep on it. don't have to answer me now," he shakes his head, looks away again, some part of him afraid of what he might see behind marcus' eyes. "i do want you to congratulate me." that's a demand, said without any anger, only laid out with a handful of understanding and still, always, so much love. "even if you're lying. i'll just feel pretty shitty if rafael or ikki are the first ones to say it to me, so do me that favour."

Nana stays atop her bike a moment longer than needed. The summer sun dances against her gloved knuckles, creating shadows against the knees of her leather pants. Her boots dig into the asphalt on either side of her as she finally finds the motivation to push herself up and off of her bike. Her wound had since healed, though there was a residual soreness brought on by sudden movements and the inability to stay put in one position for too long. 

The Power catches her reflection in one of the many windows that greet her as she steps through the gate. The sound of the rocks shifting beneath her weight is loud enough to alert Rafael, she’s sure-- if he hasn’t already been warned by the security system she installed. She could enter his home, brush past the boundaries that should be in place. But instead, she stays put just beside the front door. 

There’s a surge of frustration that courses through her. She recalls the way she could barely look at him as he lay asleep in his hospital bed. The way the monitors were a siren song, threatening to drag one of her closest friends to his untimely demise. 

She hadn’t had the time to consider what this party meant. She’s unsure if she wants to.

Nana looks up at the camera discreetly placed only where she and the home owners know, before she looks back to the door. There’s movement-- supplied only by shadows, not noise, and then it opens. Nana steels her jaw, preparing to see somebody she doesn’t recognize, but although a bit bruised and tired, it’s Rafael. Despite it all, he stands before her. “I hope it’s not too early,” Nana says as she looks at him. “I figured it’d be better to meet ahead of The Factory.” The words taste stale as she says them, like they’re being written by something small and pushed forward from the back of her throat. “How are you feeling?” She asks, then realizing she isn’t sure how he’ll respond-- about his injuries, or the party that awaits him in a few hours.

July 3rd, 1995. Born to Xander Lightfoot and Mary Cheadle. The latter does not stay in their life long and Wren is raised by their father in Spennymoor.

March 12th, 2007. Xander Lightfoot dies of a heart attack. Wren is placed in foster care and is placed with a foster family quite soon after.

January 2008. Wren moves to another foster family and the cycle of changing families begins, never staying long enough to feel like they belong.

2011. Wren is placed with their final foster family in London. They venture into the world of crime for the first time, alongside Vincent.

2013. Wren starts university and is studying to become a social worker. They meet Greer in a class.

2015. Wren drops out due to money and mental problems. They start working odd jobs, some less legal than others.

Early 2018. Wren and Genie meet and their friendship ( with benefits ) soon blossoms.

2019.  Now roommates, Wren and Vincent admit that they love each other as more than friends. They sleep together. The morning after, Vincent is arrested and the two fall out of touch.

April 2020. Wren is kicked out of their shared flat due to missing rent and becomes homeless. They spent a few nights crashing on Genie’s couch, their close friend with benefits.

June 2020. Wren is recruited into doing a job for famine by Belladonna after showing up at an illegal racing event hosted by famine. They start out as an illegal bookie and errand runner.

July 2020. With their newly made money, Wren moves into their small studio in Spitalfields, where they are neighbours to Sacha.

January 25, 2021. Wren is rumoured to be Remus’ new lover.

January 26, 2021. Wren starts working at FemEn as Ikki’s personal assistant.

February 5, 2021. Wren and Kitty save Thomas’ life.

bed rest for at least three weeks, doctor haught told him. it should come as no surprise that marcus would not heed his doctor's orders, not when there is so much to be done, so little time to be caught twiddling his thumbs. marcus has never really been sick, not to the point where it wins over his willpower. he hates this vulnerability. he hates having powers in his shadow, he hates that all of a sudden he isn't fit to protect himself, let alone anyone else. so when a touchy and foul marcus pays the powers that escort him anywhere outside of rafael and ikki's home, they take the chance to escape him eagerly. 

his driver complies, despite a pointed, “mr. reyes…” but when marcus dismisses his concerns, he finds himself at the gym. might as well make use of the new found alliance, not that marcus is too convinced of its fleetingness. in a private workout room, he stands in front of a punching bag. his form is something to be pitied when he can barely stomach putting any pressure on his left leg. every jolt of pain is a reminder of the flash that took his ability to walk on two feet, the phantom boom filling his ears and making his muscles seize up.

when someone walks in, marcus doesn't turn around. “you're in the wrong room,” he says with no kindness in his voice. despite his warning, he doesn't hear whoever it was leave. gritting his teeth, marcus pivots on one foot to see nana. shit. “ricky told you where i was, didn't he?” he doesn't find it in him to really be angry with his driver, but it doesn't ease his annoyance. “i'll give you five grand to leave me here and not pass this onto ravi.”

May was fucking fuming.

The success of Death's big debut had briefly allowed her to ride a high, happily poking around the bomb sites and tweeting conspiracy theories about who would want to target the three companies - the very picture of innocence. The knowledge that each of them had gotten out alive and unharmed didn’t hurt either, a small swell of pride in her chest at the thought that she had managed to protect those beneath her. She should’ve known that the feeling wouldn’t last long. 

Lurking behind the cameras of the chat show recording was always going to be a dangerous game when May was liable to throw whatever was in her hands as soon as she heard the smug voice of Rafael Femenias Jr., but she had wanted to watch him squirm under Emil’s questioning, see if he could take even a scrap of accountability for the damage his company had caused. She should have anticipated that he wouldn’t, she doubted that the word ‘accountability’ was even in his vocabulary. But she never could’ve anticipated this, a glorified coming out party that was the PR equivalent of pretending to throw a tennis ball for a dog and watching it chase after nothing.

And the worst part was, she knew it would work. Media outlets could never resist a romance, particularly one which had seemingly been building for years - and the fact that it was a gay relationship? They’d be falling over each other to post cringeworthy tweets plastered with the pride flag emoji, celebrating the fact that a member of the LGBTQ+ community was the face of a company who was destroying the planet. A win for inclusivity! It made her sick.

As the cameras wound down and their special guests made their way off the sound stage, she ran to catch up with the more detestable of the two. Her disdain for Ikki Nakamura could wait. Her personal vendetta against the Femenias boy could not. "Very nice, Mr Femenias. Slick.” Her voice laced with sarcasm, she spat the words at his retreating back as though hoping the sheer force of her hatred could wound him. “I'd congratulate you on your plan, but I think we both know that this was the work of some greasy spin doctor and not an original thought on your part."

The Proposal Series - Part 4: Jessica Reyes @realjessicareyes (with @ikkinakamura) 

When Rafael first learned that Ikki asked Jessica to be his Maid of Honour (alongside his sister, Aya). He knew a spectacle needed to be had. After all, knowing his fiance, it was undoubtedly a subtle and low-key request. Up to the task, Rafael takes Jessica’s grand gesture into his own hands. After remembering her iconic moment as accidental back-up dancer on one of Taylor Swift’s 1989 concerts. Rafael calls up the pop star, and pays her an obscene amount of money to do a private performance in Jessica’s home. With a bribe to her security detail, Rafael is able to adorn Jessica’s apartment ceiling with large balloons of various hues.

Not forgetting that she is Ikki’s Maid of Honour, Rafael forces Ikki to join in on the gesture. Ikki is set behind the popstar, and is bestowed one of Rafael’s guitars where he is quickly instructed on how to play a simple chord for musical accompaniment. When Jessica appears, it’s not long before Rafael gifts her with a cheeky piece of jewelry.

One of his old, one-night-stand necklaces that is repurposed. The Tiffany heart is still obvious to anyone who knows the brand, but the branding is replaced with ‘Ikki’s Maid of Honour’ inscribed on the silver plate.
