European Tapestry Production and Patronage 1400–1600

This development was stimulated by:

the availability of skilled weavers and dyers

by the existence of local guilds that supported and encouraged the development of this nascent industry

by the commissions of local patrons

By the mid-fifteenth century, (1450 A.D) numerous tapestry workshops existed in the low countries in towns such as:

Arras

Tournai

Lille

Brussels

From these centers, tapestries were exported throughout Europe

During the last quarter of the 1475 d.C high-quality Netherlandish production was increasingly dominated by the workshops in Brussels.

This was the result of three factors:

the decline of the industry in Arras and Tournai;

the emergence of Brussels as the principal seat of the Burgundian court in the Netherlands

the monopoly that the Brussels artists’ Guild of Saint Luke secured in 1476 over the fabrication of figurative tapestry cartoons

there were workshops established by Ercole II d’Este in Ferrara in 1536 where designs by dosso dossi and Giulio Romano, among others, were produced.

In 1539, a workshop was also established in Mantova by Federigo Gonzaga

A number of the weavers involved in these workshops subsequently relocated to Florence when Cosimo I de' Medici established two workshops in 1545.

Although the workshops in Mantua and Ferrara were defunct by, respectively, 1563 and 1582, the Florence workshops continued

The Decline

Religious persecution had cast its shadow over the Netherlandish industry from the late 1520s

During the 1530s and 1540s, increasing numbers of Flemish weavers relocated to towns in the Germanic states that were more tolerant of their beliefs

The number of migrants was to increase dramatically during the late 1560s as Philip II of Spain sought to repress the reform movement in the Netherlands.

With the arrival of the Duke of Alba and his army in 1568 and the institution of the Council of Troubles, this exodus turned into a flood as weavers migration emigrated to more tolerant regions in the northern Netherlands (Holland), the Germanic states, France, and England

Although production did continue during the late sixteenth century, the tapestries made during this era are of much lower quality

new centers of importance emerged in:

Delft

Paris

Munich

Flemish weavers were eventually lured across Europe, and this transfer of skill led to the success of the Gobelins factory in Paris that finally stole Flanders’s crown in the late 1700s

The original portrait of the Duke of Alba is in the Fundación Casa de Alba, Madrid. Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel, 3rd Duke of Alba (1507 – 1582), known as the Gran Duque de Alba (Grand Duke of Alba) in Spain and IJzeren Hertog (Iron Duke) in the Netherlands, was a Spanish noble, general, and diplomat. He was an adviser of King Charles I of Spain (the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V), and his successor, Philip II of Spain, Mayordomo mayor of both kings, member of their Councils of State and War, governor of the Duchy of Milan (1555–1556), viceroy of the Kingdom of Naples (1556–1558), governor of the Netherlands (1567–1573) and viceroy and constable of the Kingdom of Portugal (1580–1582). He is best known for his actions against the revolt of the Netherlands, where he instituted the Council of Troubles, and repeatedly defeated the troops of William of Orange and Louis of Nassau during the first stages of the Eighty Years' War. He is also known for the brutalities during the capture of Mechelen, Zutphen, Naarden and Haarlem. In spite of these military successes, the Dutch revolt was not broken and Alba was recalled to Spain. The Neapolitan sums (Polish: Sumy neapolitańskie)

In February 1556, Bona Sforza departed Poland to her native Italy with treasures she had accumulated in her 38 years in Poland–Lithuania. In May, she arrived in Bari that she inherited from her mother Isabella of Naples. There she was visited by envoys of Philip II of Spain who tried to convince her to give up the Duchy of Bari and Rossano in favor of the Habsburg Spain. She refused, but Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba, who at the time was the Viceroy of Naples, feared a French attack and was raising money for troops (see Italian War of 1551–59). Bona, perhaps having ambitions of becoming a Viceroy of Naples herself, agreed to lend him a huge sum of 430,000 ducats at 10% annual interest. The loan was guaranteed by custom duties collected in Foggia. The agreements were signed on 23 September and 5 December 1556.

In 1557, Bona prepared for a journey towards Venice and from there, perhaps, back to Poland; the Habsburgs were determined to obtain Bari and Rossano. On 8 November 1557, Bona became ill with stomach ache. On 17 November, when she was losing her consciousness, her trusted courtier Gian Lorenzo Pappacoda brought notary Marco Vincenzo de Baldis who wrote her last will. This will left Bari, Rossano, Ostuni, and Grottaglie to Philip II of Spain and large sums to Pappacoda and his family. Her daughters would receive a one-time payment of 50,000 ducats, except Isabella Jagiellon who was to receive 10,000 ducats annually. Her only son, King Sigismund II Augustus, was named as the main beneficiary but at the end he would inherit only cash, jewelry, and other personal property. The next day, Bona felt better and dictated a new last will to Scipio Catapani leaving Bari and other property to Sigismund Augustus. She died in the early morning of 19 November 1557. Several of her servants (cook, page, majordomo, scribe) died as well.

Pappacoda presented the will that supported Philip II. Sigismund Augustus contested this will and claimed that Pappacoda poisoned Bona and falsified her last will. The Habsburgs claimed that it was Sigismund Augustus who forged the second will. Sigismund Augustus sent Wojciech Kryski to Madrid, Jan Wysocki to Rome, and Marcin Kromer to the court of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, who was also Philip's uncle and Sigismund's father-in-law. In connection with the dispute, Sigismund Augustus established the first courier service that connected Kraków with Venice in October 1558. The first royal postmaster was Italian banker Prospero Provana.

Polish envoys faced an uphill battle: Ferdinand I did not want to intervene, claiming to be just a middleman and not a judge, and the case was transferred to a court in Naples. After the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis, Spain was the dominant power in Italy. Philip's attorneys did not focus on the issue of will's authenticity and instead claimed that Isabella of Naples did not have rights to Bari and Rossano to begin with. Alternatively, they claimed that Bona received Bari only for her lifetime from Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. Polish envoys did not know the subtleties of Italian and Spanish laws; their work in questioning witnesses and gathering evidence was obstructed by local officials.

The dispute also complicated the relations between Poland and Sweden as 50,000 ducats of the dowry of Catherine Jagiellon was dependent on the successful resolution of the territorial dispute by Sigismund Augustus Only in July 1559, the Polish managed to recover only a small sum of cash, personal belongings, and interest on the loan. The Duchy of Bari was incorporated into the Spanish Crown, despite requests from Ruy Gómez de Silva and Cardinal Antonio Carafa to grant Bari to them. For his services, Pappacoda was awarded by Philip: he was given a pension and made markgraf of Capurso and castellan of Bari. However, the issue continued to be contested. Cardinal Stanislaus Hosius contemplated about bringing the case before the Council of Trent. Bishop Adam Konarski managed to recover some of Bona's jewelry and more cash. An opportunity to recover Bari and Rossano presented itself when Pope Pius V wanted to include the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Holy League in 1571. However, it was lost due to Sigismund Augustus' death in July 1572. 

Even when paid, the interest payment was late (Spain defaulted on its loans several times). In 1564, Spain paid 300,000 ducats representing interest in arrears. The sum was paid in silver thalers and half-thalers minted in Naples and Sicily. At the time, Poland–Lithuania was engulfed in the Livonian and Northern Seven Years' Wars and was short on cash. To save time and money, the received coins were not melted and re-minted. Instead, they were counterstamped with a monogram of Sigismund Augustus and the year (1564) in Vilnius Mint. These coins were mandatorily exchanged for 60 Polish groszes when in reality the coins were worth only about 33.5 groszes. The King promised to redeem the coins at the end of the war at the same rate of 60 groszes (thus, in effect, providing a wartime loan to the state). It is unknown if the promise was kept. These countersigned coins are numismatic rarity in Poland and Lithuania.

After the death of Sigismund Augustus in 1572, the interest was supposed to be split between his sisters Anna Jagiellon and Catherine Jagiellon. However, Anna did not forward the money to Catherine in Sweden and their conflict became known.

The matter of recovering Neapolitan sums was discussed again and again in the general sejm. The issue was often combined with the issue of reopening silver and lead mines in Olkusz that were flooded during the Swedish Deluge. These two matters were often brought up when taxation was discussed as a solution to fiscal issues of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. It became a proverb that Poland was robbed twice: once by river Baba that flooded Olkusz, and a second time by Queen Bona.

In 2012, Marek Poznański, Polish archaeologist and member of the Sejm, assumed that each ducat had 3.5 grams of 986 gold and calculated that at 2012 gold prices, without interest, the loan was worth 235 million Polish złoty or 57 million euros. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs replied that it was not a loan from the Polish government, but from Bona as an individual; therefore, if the statute of limitations had not expired, the claim should be pursued by Bona's descendants.

The premature death of Empress Isabella in 1539 affected Charles V deeply. He never remarried, and he dressed in black for the rest of his life. When his wife died, Charles found that he did not have her portrait, so he tried to recover the one that his deceased wife had sent years earlier to Margaret of Austria. In November 1539 he received this portrait from his sister Mary, but was not happy with it as he considered that it did not resemble his wife. It was probably at this point that he had the idea of commissioning a portrait from Titian if he could find a suitable model.

In 1543 Charles sent to the artist in Busseto a small portrait of Isabella probably by William Scrots (Potsdam, National Museum), molto simile at vero, benché di trivial` pennello, according to Aretino. In 1545 Titian finished a portrait of Isabella dressed in black with flowers in her lap and with the imperial crown behind her; it was destroyed in the fire in the Palace of El Pardo in 1604 and is known through copies and prints. Charles had it brought to Augsburg in 1547 so that the artist could retouch the nose. This lost portrait acted as a model for the present version, also painted in Augsburg and which we know, from a letter from the artist to Granvelle, was completed on 1 September 1548. In the letters, Titian also refers to a double portrait of Charles and Isabella of which there is a copy by Rubens (Madrid, Fundacion Casa de Alba Collection), and which was a curious combination of the seated portrait of Charles (Munich, Alte Pinakothek) and the first one of the Empress.

These three portraits constitute further chapters in the fascinating process of the recovery of the empress through her image, culminating in the double portrait which united the emperor with his absent spouse. In these works Charles was not seeking a faithful reproduction of her appearance (given that he already had one molto simile al vero), but rather wished to visualise his own memorised one, which would explain the episode of the nose. Charles asked Titian to retouch this feature, not because it was badly painted, but rather because Titian had painted it as it really was. The portraits of Isabella made during her lifetime show her with an aquiline nose, a feature also remarked on by contemporary commentators, and not with the improbably straight and classically perfect nose which Titian painted. With this correction, Titian repeated with Isabella´s nose the cosmetic operation he had carried out Charles´ protruding jaw in his portraits. The moving, personal nature of the portrait explains why it was one of the few paintings that Charles always had with him, and it is documented in Brussels in 1556 and Yuste in 1558.

The portrait is a classic scheme already used by Raphael or Leonardo da Vinci, in which the model stands sitting next to her opening a window in which one guesses landscape. The landscape gives depth to the composition, in addition to serving as color contrast with the figure of the Empress, then dominate the greenish and bluish, while the interior scene is dominated by warm colors. The figure shows some stiffness Isabel, maybe related to the concept of majesty as used in the iconography imperial. The figure wears a rich red dress and gold brocade and trimmed with rhinestones. It is decorated also with flashy jewelry, like a necklace of pearls with a clasp at the chest with gems hanging from another teardrop pearl, a ring on her right hand, or a jewel topped headdress, a hairstyle very rigid fashionable at the time made up braids. The Empress holds an open book in her left hand, perhaps a missal or prayer book, and look at a distant point with preoccupied expression. The X-radiograph has revealed no alterations but has shown that Titian reused a canvas with a female figure painted on it.

Charles, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, died on 21 September 1558 from malaria at the Monastery of San Jerónimo in Yuste, where he kept this portrait of his beloved wife. He arranged to have brought to him the very same crucifix that Isabella had grasped so firmly on her deathbed. Their son, Philip II, lent this portrait to his sister the Empress Mary for the Descalzas Reales Convent, where it is mentioned by Carducho in 1633. In 1636 it was hanging in the Alcazar in Madrid, where it remained until the fire of 1734. It then passed to the Palacio Real Nuevo, entering the Museo del Prado in 1823.

Aproximativ un sfert din mierea de pe piaţa internaţională este falsificată, a declarat, sâmbătă, la Blaj, într-o conferinţă de presă organizată în cadrul "Sărbătorii Mierii", preşedintele Federaţiei Internaţionale a Asociaţiilor de Apicultori – APIMONDIA, Philip McCabe, prezent pentru prima dată în România la un târg de profil. "Este o problemă foarte mare. Din păcate, trebuie să spunem că, la ora actuală, ceea ce constatăm este că 20 – 25% din piaţa internaţională a mierii are miere falsificată", a afirmat preşedintele APIMONDIA. Philip McCabe a spus că unele companii îşi hrănesc albinele şi folosesc, pentru a fabrica mierea, de fapt, zahăr din trestie de zahăr, tot felul de arome, de coloranţi şi fac astfel siropuri. "Din fericire, ambalatorii de miere cunosc şi dispun de toată tehnologia de identificare a acestor falsificări şi se mai poate preveni acest lucru. De fapt, secretul unei mieri bune este mierea locală", a afirmat preşedintele APIMONDIA. McCabe s-a arătat încântat de tehnologia care se aplică pentru testarea mierii la un procesator din Blaj, el exprimându-şi speranţa ca peste tot să se întâmple acest lucru. Preşedintele APIMONDIA a menţionat că mierea trebuie să aibă obligatoriu polen. "Aş vrea să vă vorbesc şi de mierea de Manuka. (…). Din păcate, producţia reală de miere de Manuka în Noua Zeelandă nu depăşeşte 1.700 de tone. În ciuda acestui fapt, în Marea Britanie se vând cel puţin sub această etichetă 1.900 de tone de miere de Manuka, iar în lumea întreagă peste 10.000 de tone", a declarat McCabe. Potrivit acestuia, diferenţa este, de fapt, un amestec. "Iei doar un butoi cu Manuka şi vreo 40 de altele şi le amesteci şi ai un pic de Manuka ��n ea, dar nu e vorba de miere de Manuka. Este o mare problemă", a susţinut Philip McCabe. Preşedintele APIMONDIA recomandă ca atunci când se doreşte să se consume o miere adevărată să se cumpere de la procesatori de genul celui din Blaj şi de la cei care participă la târguri cum este "Sărbătoarea mierii". Peste 10.000 de vizitatori sunt aşteptaţi sâmbătă şi duminică la Blaj la cel mai mare târg apicol din România, unde participă 150 de expozanţi din 20 de ţări, adaugă Agerpres. A X-a ediţie a "Sărbătorii Mierii" este organizată de Apidava Blaj, Primăria şi Consiliul Local Blaj, Consiliul Judeţean Alba şi Asociaţia Apis Târnave Blaj.
