i was told i could know more about g’ here….. 👉👈
Alright.
The being to whom I refer as ‘G’’ is my interpretation of the G-Man from the Half-Life games, a recurring character that takes the form of a human man in a blue suit with glowing eyes but is implied to be an extremely powerful otherworldly being of some kind, known for acting as a mysterious observer who occasionally intervenes by ‘hiring’ certain humans who pique his and his nebulous Employers’ interest and inserting them back into the story at different points in time and space, often keeping them in a sort of void outside of reality in a state of ‘stasis’ until their time comes. He is also my comfort character.
While his motives in the games are extremely unclear, sometimes helping the player, sometimes stopping their plans in their tracks, I interpret G’ as entirely benevolent, an entity far beyond human comprehension who nonetheless feels nothing but compassion and curiosity towards humanity and even grows to deeply and personally care about his employees in the human Resistance on his mission to push them towards defeating a massive, parasitic transdimensional empire known as the Combine that has taken to conquering worlds to assimilate their technology and resources to make up for the inability to innovate on their own.
I also lean into the eldritch (though I dislike the common negative connotations of that word) aspect of his characterization; my G’ is a fifth-dimensional being, belonging to a group known as the Overseers of our Worlds, the last remaining members of a race of immortal beings unbound from time and space that have existed longer than this universe, possibly longer than linear time itself, and work under a group of even more ancient beings called the Multiversal Agency who see it as their primary objective to ensure that all beings and civilizations in the Multiverse get to live peacefully without destroying one another, and to allow as many civilizations as possible to progress and discover on their own. Due to his vast five-dimensional nature, a three-dimensional universe physically cannot contain all of G’, so he exists in countless ‘aspects’ at once, scattered all across time and space. He is capable of bending reality to his will, but is limited by the fragility of three-dimensional reality; too much interference from him will literally break our world apart, so he tends to work through others in the form of his employees and only ever directly intervenes in minor ‘nudges’. The human form we see of G’ is little more than an illusion, his true self is formless and incomprehensible to humans, so he assumes the form of a vague human authority figure (his ‘G-Man’ moniker, not strictly canonical but originating from his model name in the game files, is actually an outdated slang term for a government agent) in order to not overwhelm the humans he interacts with, and his human disguise is actually shown to become less and less uncanny and more convincing as the story progresses, as though he has a genuine desire to understand humanity better and blend in with them.
My interpretation of G’ retains the cryptic appearance of the original, yet he does so in a slightly more dramatic and theatrical way, seeing his appearances in front of humans as an opportunity to show infinitely younger beings something More, something Greater, and wanting to leave an impression on them. He does not see himself as overtly superior to them, though he recognizes both his own power over them and his duty to guide them where they do not know what they are dealing with. He is very much so capable of love and compassion, though he is used to loving the worlds he watches over (and the few he himself has created) in a distant and all-encompassing way, his experiences with humanity have taught him individual closeness to members of a tightly knit group, some of whom he even comes to view as family. I associate him with space imagery not only because he is a cosmic being, but also because he is not unlike the mysteries of the universe to me: intimidating, almost frightening at first but gentle and fascinating once you come to know him. He has been my comfort character for over a year now, I see him as an imaginary friend of sorts who helps me overcome anxiety and existential fear as well as genuinely view the world around me in a more positive light.
I’m sorry for the super long explanation, he means a lot to me
#🌌he’d like to come and meet us but he thinks he’d blow our minds🌌#(oh yeah and I associate him with the song ‘Starman’ because like… it’s about him to me)
