wrote a sad, gay little backstory for my Jean storyline antagonist today! !!!
So basically my antagonist Morganite had a lover, Tourmaline. Tourmaline was another Homeworld elite back during Era 1, however… she ended up defecting to join the Crystal Gems during the war. The two loved each other immensely, but amidst the war they continuously were having idealogical debates that started to wrench them apart. Morganite still believed the Diamond Authority was in the right, that Gem society is perfect how it is, and Tourmaline refused to blind herself to the reality of the mistreatment and prejudice occurring amongst Gems of quote-on-quote “lower castes” anymore. Both stubbornly believed they could change the other’s mind, though. But this future never came to pass.
From Morganite’s perspective, Tourmaline went off on a mission for the Crystal Gems and never returned, almost definitely was shattered. Her hatred for the CGs boils over- believing foolishly that these rebels poisoned her lover against her- and she vowed to get her revenge upon them however possible. This revenge couldn’t be sought for thousands of years.
For years she assumed the CGs were destroyed in the war’s end, in the corruption blast. But when the shift to Era 3 occurred, she realized many of them were still alive… and allied with other Era 1/2 sympathizers and began setting a plan in motion.
Her ultimate goal was to alter the flow of history to bring her Tourmaline back to her, and to destroy the Crystal Gems once and for all. She succeeds in the first goal, but not the second. However… the irony and complexity of time travel means that… Tourmaline was never shattered to begin with. She only “disappeared” because a future Morganite planned a mission to “rescue” her and bring her to her side. Morganite spent all those years mourning and hating the Crystal Gems for the wrong reasons for nothing. And when she finally sees her Tourmaline again… Tourmaline is disturbed by what her former lover has done, and wants nothing more to do with her.
