Didherodown's Official Danny Phantom episode recommendations
(for the fan who has never seen the series but is in the phandom)
Ordered in sequence of release (taken from imdb, so take that as you will)
Very Important episodes will be noted like this Episodes I think are fun and kinda important like this
enjoy!
Season 1: Has a lot of groundwork for the show, lots of introductions to our cast of Ghosts
Mystery Meat - E1
Where it all started, establishes Sam and Tuckers rivalry over food, our first encounter with the Lunch Lady, and Danny’s first outing as a hero in general
Episodes 2-6 : feature introductions to Dora, Skulker, Technus, Point Dexter, and Desiree
Bitter Reunions - E7
Our introduction to Vlad! Establishes Vlad vs Danny dynamic, Vlad's hate of Jack and his obsession with Maddie
Prisoners of Love - E8 is our intro to Walker
My Brothers Keeper - E9
Spectra makes her appearance! Shows a lot of Danny’s insecurities he has about being different, an outsider, ect.  And Jazz finds out Danny's identity!
Shades of Gray - E10
Our first meeting of Valerie, and where her life gets ruined by Cujo!
Fanning the Flames - E11 is our intro to Ember
Maternal Instincts - E17
Vlad is up to his scheming and tries to get both Danny and Maddie to join him and abandon Jack. (Introduces the Specter Deflector gadget, as well the the Plasmius Maximus)
The Million Dollar Ghost - E19
Vlad puts a bounty on Danny Phantom, making lots and lots of ghost hunters show up- including the GIW
Control Freaks - E20
Circus Gothica! The ringmaster- Freakshow- has a staff that he uses to control ghosts and Danny of course falls victim
Season 2: Has a lot of bangers- and is very heavy in the Danny Lore AND where a lot of fannon comes from (ghost king, trans danny, pharaoh tuck, ect)
Reign Storm - E4
In which Pariah Dark is awoken and goes on a rampage, sucking Amity Park into the Ghost zone. With the other ghosts also terrified of the Ghost King, Danny might be the only who has a chance to stop him (ghost king danny anyone????)
The Ultimate Enemy - E6
Danny cheats on a test, which we find out actually will end the world. Our introduction to Clockwork and the Eyeball Guys(™). And of course, Danny’s future evil self- Dan !!
King Tuck - E7
Where Tucker gets influenced by Hotep-Ra (origin of the Pharaoh Tucker fannon)
Identity Crisis - E8
Where we learn that simply splitting Danny from his ghost half is not an option, his ghost half is indeed half of him
Flirting with Disaster - E11
Where Danny and Valerie are dating. In this episode her original ghost fighting suit is destroyed and Technus makes her a new version- leading to lots of fannon about Valerie being a little more ghost than she thought
Kindred Spirits - E14
Cloning! Danielle! AHHHHHHH!!!! (trans Danny? All but confirmed /hj)
Reality Trip - E17
Where Freakshow is searching for the stones of the Reality Gauntlet (very reminiscent of the Infinity Gauntlet from Marvel)
Season 3: Often the most criticized of the three seasons, the show was canceled in this season. BUT THERE IS SO MUCH IMPORTANT LORE IN THIS ONE LETS GO
Infinite Realms - E2
Our first meeting with Frostbite! Also tells us a lot about how natural portals work AND the introduction of blood blossoms
Torrent of Terror - E4
Introduces Vortex, also Danny's mood affects the weather for a good part of this episode
Urban Jungle - E6
Undergrowth has taken over amity, making Sam his “Queen” because of her love and care of plants. THIS IS WHERE WE FIRST SEE DANNY’S ICE POWERS! AND WE LEARN ABOUT CORES! YES REALLY ONLY 6 EPISODES FROM THE END
Boxed Up Fury - E8
The Box ghost, upset at not being taken seriously- steals Pandora's Box, and well, that goes about as good as you imagine it going
D-Stablized - E11
Dani is literally dissolving into ectoplasm, and Danny has to find a way to save her before she destabilizes all the way. (Introduces Ecto Dejecto- a fanfic staple)
Now this is just my personal list- based on 20 years of being in this fandom (holy shit how can it be that long????)
Thanks for reading :)

hear me out: episode where the crew find some magical item that lets a human have the basic abilities of a ghost for a short period of time. they try to take it back to the ghost zone but it reacts poorly since it's designed to be on earth and used by humans, so they have to keep it somewhere on earth for a bit while somebody (idk, lets go with the far frozen) develops a solution. they need to put it somewhere they can keep an eye on it regularly, so its gotta be one of their houses. tucker's parents and nice and respectful but don't have a good track record with leaving things alone (see the flour babies), and god only knows what would happen to it if they left it around fentonworks. while they're trying to figure this out, they come across some kind of secret corridor buried in sams house! they can tell her parents dont know about it bc its dusty as shit. this makes sense, its a weird rich ppl house in a weird haunted town and sams parents didnt have it built, they just bought it. of COURSE theres going to be hidden passages and shit. so... they leave it there for sam to safeguard until they can find a permanent solution.
one day, sam ends up very frustrated after having a conversation with her parents about a politician that they trusted (she never did) who betrayed even their trust and has faced no repurcussions for it. shes sick and tired of there being no checks and balances, of greedy people only ever gaining power no matter how they treat the people who support them. and... well, sam is a wrathful person. and she's not known for her excellent impulse control. so she decides to use the artifact, just once, to scare that politician a little. she flies over to wherever he's staying and goes to give him a little Christmas Carol moment to hopefully spook him into considering changing his ways. but... something goes wrong, and she ends up straight up scaring him to death. fuck. well, if she runs away now, there will be no evidence of her. itll be an unexplained death and hopefully she won't go to jail for life.
sam is freaking out, but she cant TELL anybody! so she puts the artifact away and just tries to go on with life as normal. but the guy's death is on the news, and without a figurehead, some of his policies and movements are actually being fought against with more strength... one guy's death didnt destroy the ideology that supported him, but it was pretty effective in weakening it. sam is still freaking out and scared, but she also has a hard time not feeling proud of what she did. look! look how much she helped her people! this was direct action! and that guy deserved to be scared after he acted against his own! hopefully this would scare other people like him into respecting the working class more.
...but it doesnt, not really, and there are others like him in both the private and the public sector who are being painfully disrespectful. and now sam knows that she has the power to do something about it, and it goes against all her morals not to. and the process to find a safe place to store the artifact keeps getting delayed, so it stays at sam's house. ....so she goes again. a few more times, soon. every time, she really does just mean to scare the shit out of them, but she doesnt know these powers that well, and her targets die much of the time. she feels bad, but she learns to live with it, because what else can she do? if this is the cost of action, shes just glad she has to pay it and not anybody else.
the news is, of course, panicking about this string of deaths. team phantom wasnt that involved at first, not any of their business, until the deaths were shown to be consistently evidence-less... and those who survived reported seeing a dark specter who urged them to change their ways. THAT sounds like ghost shit. so the trio meet up to talk about it, and when sam says something about how maybe they should just leave it because its making people in power behave better than ever before, tucker figures it out. he waits to say anything until he can talk to her about it alone, because it feels very personal and he doesnt want to betray her trust on something THIS BIG. so theyre in it together now, tucker trying to convince sam to tell someone so she can get help because jfc, and sam promising to stop (and holding to that!) but trying to convince tucker that it isnt that big of a deal and they should both just move on (she doesnt believe that ofc, theyre both children scared out of their minds for being involved in actual straight up murder), and both of them trying to keep danny and jazz from figuring it out.
eventually, the artifact is just about to be moved to a permanent solution that was finally finished, but just before then, news comes out that an investigator into the deaths has made a claim that ghosts were involved and plans to provide evidence. sam freaks out! they could find out it was her, and even if they dont, ghosts will be public knowledge and a major public enemy! she cant let that happen! panicking, the only thing she can think to do is go scare (or kill, whichever happens) the investigator too so her actions dont end up permanently fucking over ghost-human relations! tucker obviously cant let her do ANOTHER MURDER and also hes trying to get her to see that that WOULDNT EVEN HELP and they fight over the artifact, both teying to take it and both furious at the other, and all the physical violence and strong human emotion ends up destroying the thing. a bunch of energy flies out of it— and it ends up instantly forming ghosts of the people sam has killed. whoops!
anyway i have no idea how this episode would resolve what with The Actual Murders and the Very Real Consequences but my point still stands
i know its a childrens show and they barely show outside of the town but danny phantom doesnt have nearly enough assassinations in it. youre gonna tell me a whole group of people who died unfulfilled have AT LEAST the ability to be completely undetectable, and they havent used that to kill any political figures? you really want me to believe that vlad "ive never hesitated once to mind control somebody for more power" masters hasnt left any unsolveable murders in his wake for the 20 years hes been doing this shit?

Urban Jungle: How It Should Have Been
First of all, I would like to explain that I am actually quite fond of Urban Jungle, and I don’t mean this as salt; rather constructive criticism, maybe even an alternative to the episode we were given.
In my humble opinion, while the episode wasn’t bad per se (although said opinion might have a lot to do with me being, as I said before, very fond of it) there’s certainly room for improvement.
I rewatched it recently and it’s come to my attention that the timing and its execution was definitely off. What do I mean with this? Simple; the plot advanced too fast when compared to earlier episodes.
An early ghost with similar goals to Undergrowth, that is to say, to rule the world in their very own way would be Ember in her debut in Fanning the Flames. But aside from different powers and motivations (obviously), the real difference between both episodes comes from their pacing. Which is what I think is one of Urban Jungle’s biggest flaws in terms of execution.
Tumblr media
In Fanning the Flames, Ember wasn’t officially introduced as a villain until we were five to ten minutes in (from when Danny and Sam realised she was a ghost, to Ember revealing her plan and casting the love spell on Danny). Unless my memory fails me, Undergrowth, on the other hand, was introduced as the villain even before the opening credits rolled in, and explained his plot shortly after.
There’s no build-up there.
I understand that choice is probably a result of the episode focusing more on Danny’s new powers than his actual confrontation with Undergrowth. His being a plant ghost was probably also another way to show Danny’s Ice Powers’ efficiency better. But in all honesty, that choice really took away from everything the episode could have offered.
Tumblr media
For example, instead of introducing Undergrowth from the get go, they could’ve thrown hints of his existence/plan during the first five or so minutes of the episode. Like having the news talk about the mysterious disappearances of people involved in less than ecologically ideal businesses or who were simply disrupting nature in places where there’s suddenly more vegetation. Or having mysterious plants growing around Danny and his friends, signalling Undergrowth was watching.
Furthermore, I believe some of the critics the episode received had a lot to do with the fact that, unlike his other more advanced powers, Danny soon gained control of his Ice Powers.
On the one hand, I can’t deny that the main difference between, say, duplicating himself and his Ice Powers is that Danny indeed had someone to train him in the latter (Frotsbite), as opposed to his duplicating technique, which he had to learn all by himself after refusing Vlad’s offer. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why he would learn to use them sooner.
But on the other hand, Urban Jungle would have truly gained a lot had it been the climax of Danny finally mastering his new powers, instead of learning of their existence then. From this perspective, it would have been better to have Danny learn of his cold core sooner (maybe a hint of it when he met the Far Frozen) and training to master it from then onwards until Urban Jungle, when it was most effective.
Tumblr media
But probably the fact that season 3 was 13 episodes long instead of the usual 20 played an important part as well… They got to speed things up.
The other aspect that could be improved and that is also somewhat tied with the timing of the episode is Sam’s involvement.
It was high time Sam was brainwashed, it’s true. And if you don’t know already, then you should know that a piece of my heart belongs to Plant! Sam. But in a way, despite being the episode where she was brainwashed, she had very little to do with it.
Tumblr media
When Danny and Tucker got brainwashed in Control Freaks and King Tuck, respectively; the plot actually had to do with some sort of weakness or flaw of theirs.
In Danny’s case, Control Freaks was an example of his ghost half being more of a nuisance or a disadvantage than the help it usually is. Which would then be expanded upon in episodes such as The Ultimate Enemy, Identity Crisis, and Phantom Planet (whether you consider it canon or not; we’re not talking about the episode here so it’s not really important atm). And even if Freak Show was using Danny’s ghost half against him, Danny still managed to fight the mind control several times throughout the episode.
Tumblr media
In Tucker’s case, Hotep-Ra took advantage of Tucker’s desire to be listened to and to be in charge to get him to use the Scarab Scepter and send Amity High to a place where he (Hotep-Ra) would be in control. Hotep-Ra used Tucker’s flaws and insecurities against him, taking them to an extreme where it was almost impossible to get him to snap out of his self-serving tirade.
Tumblr media
Sam…
Sam didn’t have any of that.
She wasn’t even a real antagonist (for lack of a better word) in the episode. She was just brainwashed and didn’t even confront Undergrowth herself. Danny did all the work.
And this is where an improved execution would’ve been key. Had Undergrowth kept an eye on Danny and company using his plants, he could’ve seen Sam being passionate about nature and changing the world; the kind of attitude Undergrowth was looking for in a caretaker, and more importantly, the kind of attitude he could bend to his will by taking it to its extremes.
Because that was the perfect way to get Sam to lower her guard enough for Undergrowth to brainwash her!
After witnessing Sam’s love of nature and her activistic ways, he could have presented himself before her, and before she got the chance to run away or attack him, Undergrowth could’ve played with her innermost desires and her flaws. Sweet-talking her into helping him with some sort of speech about how she’s the only one who understands the importance of Mother Nature, how everyone else is so focused on trivial, shallow things they can’t even see past that, and how no one will ever stand up for a better world...but her.
Tumblr media
Because Undergrowth would’ve been the perfect exaggeration of Sam’s flaws!
Sam is a girl who believes in a better world. A girl who’s not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and demand a change when things aren’t as they should be. But she’s also so eager to change the world that sometimes she jumps the gun without taking other alternatives into consideration, which can make her act rashly or seem forceful at times (keep in mind, she’s fourteen. Wanting things done fast is a very human thing to do, especially if you’re not mature enough to learn some patience).
Undergrowth embodies that, and is also an extreme of it. Because what could be more forceful than replanting a planet through mind control and having your plants take over the world?
With this in mind, it would’ve also been a good opportunity for Sam to get some character development. As in, having her realise there’s nothing wrong with promoting a change, but that there are limits as to how someone should do so. Just like Tucker learned he might not be the best candidate for school president if his motives were mostly self-serving. Not like Dash was any better, but...
Moreover, there could’ve been a parallel between Sam getting Danny to snap out of it in Control Freaks and Danny getting Sam to snap out of her own situation in Urban Jungle (maybe even using Undergrowth’s children against him…). But because the episode focused more on Danny’s powers, Sam was more of a...let’s say, greater reason why Danny had to defeat Undergrowth.
Having said that, I still really love Urban Jungle as it is. But there are times when I will just kick back and enjoy the show, and other times when I’ll have to see it under a more critical way of thinking. And both approaches are equally good ways to consume content, in my humble opinion :)
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Hey, still existing here, thanks again for that, but I was just curious about when Mortified actually diverges from the canon material? Obviously in season 3, but I can't pin down where, lol
Everything but Phantom Planet happened, basically, but within two years.
Here, let me show you the timeline I use.  (Includes some references to Grandfather Clocks.  Copied straight from my writing notes.)
Year 1
 August
•        Danny becomes a ghost at the beginning of the month, right after his birthday, which is in July.
•        Mystery Meat at the end of the month. (Casper High is one of those schools that starts in August because they hate Summer)
 September
•        'Brother's Keeper' runs throughout the month, and into October
•        Parental Bonding (Get to know each other dance)
•        One of a Kind (Danny's grades aren't that much of a problem at this point of the school year, but he's worried because of his family and being compared to Jazz)
•        Garage Sale
•        Splitting Images
•        Bitter Reunions
 October
•        Prisoners of Love
•        Brother's Keeper comes to a head during homecoming week
•        Shades of Gray (happens because Danny is still working out how to use his powers)
•        Fanning the Flames (But Ember had been 'touring' for several months)
•        Teacher of the Year
•        Fright Knight (lead up to Halloween)
•        Lots of tests in this month.  Guess that makes sense, a lot of schools end their first quarter or semester in October/November.
 November
•        13
•        Public Enemies
•        Life Lessons
•        What You Want (The carnival is a Holiday Bazaar, would make sense for people to get sick at this time of year)
 December
•        Maternal Instincts
•        Million Dollar Ghost
•        Everything here has human or half-human enemies, because the (sapient!) ghosts are doing the Christmas truce.  Danny winds up too stressed to notice because of the ghost hunters and Vlad's shenanigans.
 January
•        Control Freaks (school has started again)
•        Doctor's Disorders
 February
•        Pirate Radio
 March
•        Reign Storm
•        Fenton Menace (during spring break, so they can take that road trip)
•        Identity Crisis (has to happen before TUE, because Danny wouldn't risk it otherwise)
 April
•        The Ultimate Enemy (some schools do state testing around this time)
•        Secret Weapons
•        Micro-Management
 May
•        (school starts wrapping up, doing fun end-of-year stuff like contests and field trips)
•        Beauty Marked
•        King Tuck
•        Memory Blank (movies would start coming out around now, right?)
June
•        School is over, so shenanigans can start.  Maybe Casper High has Summer programs?  Danny would need them.  Would explain school scenes.
•        Lucky in Love (time of year is okay for a water park)
•        Flirting With Disaster (fair makes sense)
•        Kindred Spirits
•        Reality Trip is happening at the same time and continues all month.  Reality Trip's timeline gets erased with the Reality Gauntlet.  The trio's road trip was an imaginary fantasy road trip that they knew they wouldn't be allowed to go on.
 July
•        Infinite Realms
•        Girls' Night Out (end of Summer fishing trip)
•        Eye for an Eye. Continues until midway through November (since that's when elections are- unless Amity Park does things differently).
 Year 2
 August
•        First Deathday (see Grandfather Clocks)
•        Forever Phantom
 September
•        Double-Cross My Heart (exchange student would make sense)
 October
•        Living Large? (I'd like to pretend this one didn't exist, to be honest)
•        The wisps that live in Amity come around this time (see ectober fics).
 November
•        Eye for an Eye ends with election
•        Torrent of Terror (drought would be very concerning if it had been going on since the Summer)
•        Urban Jungle (construction/repairs after all of Vortex's storms)
 December
•        Fright Before Christmas  (part of the reason he's so stressed is because he doesn't know where Dani is, and he feels bad leaving her alone on her first Christmas)
 January
•        Boxed Up Fury
 February
•        Frightmare
 March
•        Claw of the Wild (during spring break)
 April
 May
 June
•        D-Stabilized (might be earlier, in the spring)
July
  Year 3
•        Mortified starts somewhere in here, not sure where.

Livin’ Large (S3)
Splitting Images (S1)
this was incredibly difficult to construct, tbh. i love a lot of episodes pretty equally.
the fright before christmas is my all time fave bc i just LOVE holiday specials + rhyming oh man what a fun concept that is. not only that, it’s such a fun episode in general, so what’s not to love?! it hits all my weaknesses, making it an A+++ episode.
secret weapons is a close favorite just bc i love danny/jazz bonding so so so much. unfortunately there aren’t a whole lot of episodes with it, and the other few that are more focused on jazz aren’t my favorite.
livin’ large…. need i say more?
splitting images has always been my least favorite just because it’s so boring to me? i hate it so much i’d honestly rather watch phantom planet or livin’ large. i really don’t have a solid explanation on why i hate this episode
