listen my memory of this podcast is so loose BUT in canon he's a cunning and competent person, he actively works to sabotage the evil organization he's forced to work for, he gets trapped in a sort of limbo-state version of reality meant to isolate him from the world and decides on his own to try to get out instead of submitting to it, he was literally theorized to be working for the Web by some people and YET everyone just sort of takes the way he was in s1 (in love with the main character, very timid, etc) and ignores all of his character development 👍 there are some major martin soldiers who could explain this better

I don't have anything specific in mind I just want to hear more, actually wait I lied I do have a specific question. it sounds like this wip is low fantasy? I LOVE low fantasy settings so feel free to talk about how magic intersects with the regular world but also, again, I'd love to hear about anything in general

so arson is a sort of urban fantasy where there is that split between the world regular people know and the supernatural/magical world - one of the main characters, Jai (he's a witch), describes it as "The difference between the real world and what everyone thinks is the real world, is a pair of figurative open eyes. Once you see, you know."

There's 6-ish main characters: Jai, Ira, Nancy, Orli, Kauri + i guess Seftan

and then some good side characters are: Vince, Beau + David

The basic gist of the story is that theres this group of people who are trying to find immortality, as one does, and they develop this ritual of sorts: kill a supernatural and take their life force before the earth can claim it.

By doing this theyre upsetting the balance of nature or whatever and slowly (so slowly no one notices at first) it begins to affect the local magic scene. Werewolves senses dull, dryads cant feel as much of the bush, witches struggle with harder spells etc and then one night, this evil group picks the wrong sacrifice: Ira.

Ira...who is half-possessed by this very old sorta eldritchy creature that wont let him stay dead.

So they find this guy, drenched in blood and rain (for reasons) and they grab him and kill him but when they try to take his life force theres nothing there to take (the creature absorbs it when he dies and gives it back when it decides its safe to) and the ritual sort of backfires and all the power slams into the earth and sends this huge shockwave through town which is felt by every single supernatural/magic creature and finally alerts everyone that something weird is going on.

The reason this specific group of characters are the main cast is bc they all know each other through other people? Ira is a regular at the coffee shop that Orli's family owns (she works there) and Orli has a crush on Nancy who is Seftans niece. Seftan owns a magic shop where Jai works and Kauri is their magical plant supplier.

So when shit hits the fan (*eyeing Jai* or when the avocado hits the ceiling in some cases) Seftan tells Jai about what happened to him and Nancy, and Kauri comes storming in raving about their garden. Nancy overhears Orli's thoughts about what happened to her family, and ends up inviting her over for the family dinner where they were all gonna discuss what they think caused it all. They decide to try find where the shockwave originated and thats where they find and meet Ira who is freshly back from the dead <3

The story then continues with the 5 of them (and sometimes Seftan) trying to figure out who and what happened, while they commit a bunch of crimes in order to do so. (Ive been keeping a tally, and in literally just the prologue, three crimes are committed/implied, including murder).

The 5 of them crashing at Nancy's house all the time and Seftan just straight up forgetting to tell his husband theyve somehow aquired more children

Them all finding out what exactly the goal is for the bad guys and Ira laughing really tiredly and saying "Immortality isnt that great." and Nancy quietly hugging him

Beau and Ira realising they knew each other when Beau was alive and everyone slowly realising that they have no idea how old Ira is (beau died in the 1880's)

Jai and Ira becoming best friends, like people-think-theyre-in-love levels of best friend even though they dont see each other like that bc Jai is totally in love with Kauri and wont admit it

(Ira's name used to be Milo and i think you might be able to find some old posts about him somewhere, i can try find them and link them here tho.)

How the actual magic itself interacts with the regular world is like,,, dragons owning/running the local museum or art galleries, dryads and other plant/natures based creatures running florsists or gardening services or being landscapers, a family of werewolves running a cafe that lets you bring your pets inside etc

Like, Seftan owns and runs a magic shop that, to regular people, is like your run-of-the mill hippy-like store that offers tarot readings and crystals but to people In The Know its a place to get actual real magical ingredients or information; people in the know will get real answers from Seftans readings where regular people get what they want to hear.

so some thoughts about rich goranski:

we know that its possible to at least partially disobey the squip, as seen from jeremys interaction with brooke at the beginning of act 2 ("its... original. /sees that brooke is sad/ i mean- amazing!") which would mean that even though rich isnt bullying kids on his own terms, he can still reject those instructions if he really wants to, so hes willingly going along with this whole bullying=popularity thing. he chooses to go along with it because he knows that it makes people like him. (regardless, bullying is bad and he still needs to make up for that post-squip)

even if he is completely out of control of his own actions, "i only treat you like human garbage because my squip tells me to" is kind of a weak excuse, and imagine if you were jeremy in that situation. youd be like "uh ok asshole"

and we actually know for a fact that he has some level of autonomy, because he was able to get drunk at the halloween party, even though his squip would 100% prohibit that.

AND SPEAKING OF THE HALLOWEEN PARTY, LETS ADDRESS THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:

rich got instructions to squip the whole school. he first reacted to this by getting drunk and running around asking for mountain dew red. when that didnt work, he tried to KILL HIMSELF BY BURNING DOWN JAKES HOUSE.

there were SO MANY METHODS HE COULDVE CHOSEN for his suicide mission but NOPE time to commit arson

speaking of that, jakes house was FULL OF DRUNK TEENAGERS. hes lucky no one DIED.

rich burning down jakes house, plotwise, is an EXCELLENT CHOICE that gives a wide perspective of the stakes at play at this point in the story, but in universe, what a fucking prick???

this is his very first decision made once free of the squips influence and that decision is to BURN DOWN HIS BEST FRIENDS HOUSE. seriously like HOLY SHIT DUDE CALM DOWN

its amazing to me that the fandom babys him so much because hes in serious need of a good punch in the face and a therapist.

of all the horrible choices made at that party (chloe assaulting jeremy, jeremy snapping at michael, jeremy asking christine out, jake and chloe fucking moments after christine dumped jake, etc etc etc) the ABSOLUTE WORST was richs (perfectly self-made, no squip influence, in fact it was directly opposed to this) executive decision to burn down jakes house in a suicide attempt

and yet, the fandom chooses to water him down to a miserable sad infant while demonizing jenna for daring to discuss a likely traumatic event for everyone who went to the party. like seriously do you expect her NOT to talk about that? gen - a) skatepark at night, long past closing time. its oddly serene, despite the faint threat of being caught. gen personally finds the parks lingering smell of cigarettes and weed very comforting. b) they r passive-aggressively jealous. they say theyre not a jealous type, but if the girl theyre talkin to is talkin to someone else, theyre like... ok. 😒😒😒

carlile - a) chiefin big rips then going to eat at a buffet....... he will eat so many frog legs like so fucking many!! then goin to see a movie in one of those big movie theaters and seein like a marvel movie or whatever. just somethin trite and theatrical with many, many explosions. b) not aggressively jealous, but his insecurities can sometimes get the best of him in arguments and sometimes he projects his fears that tarek will leave him for someone else, which isnt good u know but like :(( what can u do

nikolai - a) waking up with the sun and traveling to the largest museum he can find, followed by brunch at some hole-in-the-wall café tucked away in the city. the long drive home is spent listening to low-quality psychedelic indie rock, and when he and abigail arrive home, they nap for at least three hours. b) nikolai’s not really a jealous type, and abigail’s pretty clingy, so he doesn’t really have a reason to be jealous. although, when he's severely provoked, he’s prone to that tone of voice where it sounds as though you can’t choose between screaming, or crying.

klaus - a) perusing the local record shop, buying as many used vinyl he can possibly fit in his book sack, and listening to the new purchases in the dim-lit light of his bedroom while talking and napping in between. if he’s really into you, he’ll sing your favorite song—he might even play it on the guitar, too, if he can remember the chords. b) again, not much of a jealous type. most of his relationships have been nothing more than flings anyways, so he doesn’t often have the attachment to someone that would make him jealous, seeing as his relationships are often not exclusive.

anastasia - a) a long, early-morning walk through the aquarium, taking an extra long break to observe the sea turtles swimming about their tanks. she’ll gladly share all of her expansive sea turtle facts with you, if you promise to buy her a stuffed animal from the gift shop. afterwards, strolling downtown to shop in all the antique stores, then ending the date with lunch at her favorite restaurant. pls just let her talk your ear off and she’ll be satisfied. b) annie’s actually REALLY possessive, especially over her friends. she’s the type of person who will get offended if anyone else tries to say vaughn and caspian are their best friends, because, no? those are HER best friends? she’s never had a boyfriend before, but she can imagine she’d be just as possessive, if not more possessive, over someone she loved romantically. she takes from vlad :’)

ilya - a) he is literally like 1 yr old. he doesnt go on dates silly. when hes old enough to go on dates his dream date will be committing arson together <3 so romantic b) im sure he’ll be jealous af when hes older unless i forget u know we’ll see whenever he ages up yeah!!!!!!

bonnie - a) moving all the furniture in the living room, turning the radio up extra loud, and dancing to old-timey music!! then cooking a nice, healthy meal at home and watching reality tv while doing face masks. maybe ending the night w a nice bath fit for two <3 b) especially with her pregnancy, she’s been VERY jealous lately!! small things can trigger her jealousy, and sometimes she finds it difficult to be her usual, rational self when those feelings arise. luckily, it’s very easy to talk her out of this state, so she gets over these fits of jealous relatively quickly ;-;

 tarek - a) driving out into the forest, setting up tents in the middle of nowhere, and snuggling tight beside the crackling fire while watching the night settle. then waking early the next morning to go for a small hike towards the natural lakes scattered about. if carlile is too tired to walk, tarek simply carries him. :’)) b) level-headed as he is, jealousy doesn’t come to him often. it would take a lot to provoke him, and his relationship with carlile is so secure that he doesn’t really feel there’s a need to be jealous

abigail - a) midday trips to the mall with nikolai’s credit card in hand as he shamelessly lets her pick out anything she wants from any store she can possibly enter. she’s always sure to pick out a few outfits she’s certain he’ll love :’)). then going to get smoothies, yes nikolai’s paying for the smoothies too <3 b) abigail is extremely jealous, though she’s desperately trying to ease this habit. especially with nikolai moved to britechester, living with a female roommate, her jealousy often gets the best of her, and believe me when i say it isn’t pretty. she’s prone to dramatic outbursts, and she’ll even feel the urge to enact revenge (aka, cheat on you) if she feels you’ve truly cheated on her. she has to see and speak to nikolai often to have peace of mind, but even then, she often has her moments of insecurity. :((

caspian - a) watching some indie art film at a drive-in movie theater, binging on over-buttered popcorn and gas station hot dogs. if the weather allows for it, then he’ll lay a blanket out on the bed of his truck and lie back with his date, gazing at the stars, rambling about nothing. b) he’s a jealous type, but he doesn’t like admitting it. the truth is, though, it kills him to see someone he cares about with someone else. its just that he doesnt know how to express those feelings, so he often just shoves them away as if they dont exist at all. ;n;

vaughn - a) listen to him perform at one of his concerts, then let him fuck you in one of the bathroom stalls. a true romantic, i know. b) most of vaughn’s relationships are no-strings-attached anyways, so its rare for him to get jealous over a relationship thats already open to begin with. even when he did have partners in the past, he was never the type to be overly protective of his significant other
