welcome to a redacted soul eater au post! here, i try and discover what it'd be like if you merged the soul eater world and mechanics within the redactedverse. this is the ninth post in the series of posts i'll make regarding the individual characters and their listeners! we've got elliott & sunshine on the menu. enjoy!

because dreamwalkers have abilities that don't really effect the waking world, their soul isn't impacted by their empowerment in such a realm. even so, some dreamwalkers may be seen in their weaponform a lot more in dreams than non-dreamwalker weapons, which might be due to the fact that their weapon form and human form are technically one.

in some cases, dreamwalkers may wield their own weapon form in dreams, and practice with themselves. in other cases, dreamwalkers may use their abilities to train with their meister within dreams as to not disturb the outside world. elliott doesn't take heed of either of these ideas, but they're interesting to note. maybe not for this dreamwalker, but for another?

i'm not sure when i'll write for aaron/smartass, but i want to mention that i intended for them to both be axe-adjacent weapons. elliott is a poleaxe, whilst aaron is a pickaxe. this is also kind of funny because i made david a fireman axe, which i suppose in some way connects the three, but that wasn't really intended.

sunshine —  soul type: meister strongest meister ability: wavelength control - an ability all meisters hold, but skilled meisters are able to use their wavelength on the offensive resulting in it's own attack. compatible with: elliott

considering sunshine's unempowered status, there isn't much going on with their meister soul. they're quite skilled in the art of wavelength control, however, which is something not a lot of meisters can say- especially when it's related to attack-based control of their soul.

even so, it seems there's remnants of something within sunshine's soul. it's dark, but not in a scary way. it's big, and daunting, but welcoming nonetheless. could this be related to their connection with the river of death, or is it something we haven't seen before?

i'll be honest- i haven't decided what i want brachium to be like in this au. i actually contemplated not including him at all. if or when i do figure out his place, he'll get his own bonus episode, but for now, who knows what he's like in this universe?

lite backstory: for every post i make for the characters, i'll add some au backstory to really fill in some details you may be curious about!

after the unexpected survival that became sunshine's near-death-experience, their soul has felt a lot more at ease- but, also, tense. there's something lingering within it that they can't seem to shake, but because other meisters have told them that there isn't anything they can see, sunshine doesn't worry too much of it. maybe it'll pass, they think- maybe it's simply a shift of the tide?

whatever it is, elliott has tried his best to soothe their mind about it. once the two established their relationship, they agreed that they weren't fond of the strict weapon/meister lifestyle, and so they decided only to use elliott's weapon form when in dire need. even so, that didn't seem to prove well against a certain meister and his plans to save a lover, even in this universe.

just stumbled across your art for the first time & im very curious as to what exactly your starting point for creating soul variants was? by that i mean, what made you begin creating them in the first place, what served as the inspiration for all of this? id also like to add i scrolled your entire archive and i love how expressive your art is! apologies if youve already answered something like this as well. thank you, have a nice day!

Hey, thank you very much! I'm always so glad when people enjoy my varianting, and honestly that's really heartwarming that you went through my archive (especially since I still remember how long it took me to get all of my art up at the time onto here haha)

I've been asked similar questions to this before, but I don't mind it at all, it's always fun to answer even if the history on variants is actually a bit messy haha (to the point I had to kinda just pick a day for keeping track of the Variantverse's anniversary, which I actually use this drawing for reference since it's the first real time there were multiple AU Souls in one art haha).

I'm not joking about the history being messy by the way, you better strap in because this is not a question I'm usually able to answer in just a few neat sentences (for your time there will be art at the end though haha)

So basically, aside from the really old (I'm talking middle school old) AUs I had of Soul (which... don't really have updated art aside from being retroactively really important to Variantverse lore hah), variants initially started as me just finally joining the Soul Eater fandom and just doodling canon Soul in different ways. After that it basically went like I want to draw him in a different outfit, to I want to draw him as Pokemon (context like this involved Discord but that's another story hah), to okay, I want to draw him weird and no one can stop me, and then came one morning where I did a doodle session of drawing him in a lot of non-human designs for the fun of it.

This is the shortened version of it, because there were doodles in between including an entire comic saga and an entire AU that didn't end up on the Variant List (*until much later anyway) because the list hadn't been established yet. Have I mentioned the "List of Soul Variants," by the way? Some know way back when I used to keep a list of all the Soul variants I was making and even gave them all numbers (it was kind've a big deal to the point it was actual in-Variantverse lore), however shortly after it reached 1,000 variants the list went defunct (also a big deal) and I no longer keep track of how many there are. The numbers don't matter anymore, but it contextualizes some things haha.

Now to actually answer the question, where does "variants" start: #019. After the previously mentioned doodle session, I got a Thought™ after waking up to start a [secret project], however I needed a handful more variants for it, and ended up doodling some more. I honestly have no idea if I should still be calling it a secret considering it's been four years now and I never ended up drawing it up despite- Anyway, this is also exactly the point in time I started to call them all variants (theorized by me to be in reference to "regional variant" Pokemon, ones that take a new appearance when adapting to a new region).

So what inspired me? Simply because I just kept going. I started thinking of a reason the variants I'd made so far were all together during the events of [secret project??], I started thinking of a couple Souls watching over the event (that ended up becoming the main characters of the overarching story) and new unrelated variants that were goofing off in the background, I started thinking of an antagonist, not just tied to the events of this, but to the multiverse at large, and I started thinking up what happened afterwards. I ended up giving the first 25 variants lore when I wanted to flesh out their designs, I added new variants to interact with the overarching story, and I just kept doodling new variants for the hell of it, all because it was fun and even if I never really revealed what [secret project] was (at least to only more than a handful of people hah) people in the circles I was in really enjoyed seeing them. Need I remind you that I stopped keeping track of how many there were after about 1090 variants. So yeah, it just kept going.

I guess in a way this is more answering where does the Variantverse start, but it's such an integral core concept that I think is heavily responsible for this madness snowballing to begin with haha, and things like the "Soul Variant Emporium" (an entirely different inside joke) and different Souls interacting out in the multiverse still resurfaces from time-to-time in the little blurbs I give art. I'm just particularly fond of capturing variants from an angle as if writing Pokedex entries, which I think kinda loops back to that idea of where the word variant comes from.

Honestly I just really love character design, and Soul genuinely is my favourite character of all time, so it's very fun to combine the two (especially when integrating concepts I find I like, such as the mass amount of werewolves hah) and I couldn't be happier that people also get a kick out of it even if I feel just a little guilty I don't really draw non-Soul designs much anymore haha (and I will say the madness brought upon my ask box as been an absolute hoot). So yeah, to sum it up: It started because I just had doodle ideas, and I got inspired by never stopping having ideas and everyone unfortunate enough to be caught in my ramble radius happened to enjoy said ideas.

As promised (thank you for enduring, I hope this was at least interesting haha), here's the most notable early variants that got me rolling the snow around:

Awakened Soul is the one I mentioned starting off the later doodles with the idea of "variants" first in mind, but Trickster (giving Soul a new outfit), the Pokemon variants, and other Souls of other doodlings are also notable to the entire messy history as to where this all started. I'm still planning to continue trying to draw all of the 1000 variants of the old list eventually and I look forward to sharing all these silly Souls as always.

I swear I'll give the first AU Soul I'd ever drawn real art one day.

And I found the "hope eater(im so sorry if i spelled it wrong)" disease in the Prison au really creative and interesting, so I wanted to learn more: How do you get it? Is there a cure to it? Sorry if those are too specific, I just really love this concept!!

OMG HI HI HI, sorry I’m new to the hole answering questions but you’re the first one I have ever answered. So I’m super nervous and excited. So, hello! So again, this au is from Prison Au from @llamagoddessofficial. For this ask I’m going to be providing my takes on it, as well as made medical pages for both. Just to be clear my words are much truer then the pages. The pages are to show the different perspectives. Hopefully it’s not too much info at once. If its too much to read, there’s something in MS word That will read it to you. Its in review tab.  but again sorry for it being long.

 And yes, the disease.

It’s on paper name is “Mangeur d'espoir,” however it translates into “hope eater”. The story I have for the name is that Asgore when he came to the surface, he was given the job to name everything. And as we know from the game Asgore struggles with naming things. So, when he learned different languages was a thing, he started using google translate to make the simple names sound cool.

However, the sickness came about when humans and monsters meet. Just as a little history fact when the British came to Canada for the first time, they accidently brought there’s body’s sickness with them.  This spared to the natives who had not built an immunity that they had. Without the knowledge and tech, we had today hundreds of natives died. This also happened with the surfacing. Humans and monsters alike were getting sick and human Docters were desperate to find cures for things like Monster pox/Rainbow Spots, Monster flu/Sludge, and even some of the more worrying was Magic fever.  Little did everyone know that sum of the sickness was more dormant and deadly. These were more in the vein of mental health. This vein of sickness would latch themselves onto people with ptsd, mpd, or bpd. Upon discovery they were given 3 classes, Cancer, Parasite, Virus. More is still to be learned but onto the one at hand.

Before I start how it effects Monsters and humans is vary different. So, in the book of “Monstros,” A book of Monsters sickness, that has been updated to include modem knowledge on how these sicknesses affect humans.  

Let’s starts with Monsters. Its appearance is a dark spot in the soul, where this be many spots, or a mass lump always depends. The texture feels oil; however, it absorbs all light. When and if removed, (Not advised) it will leave a void/ chunk out of the soul leaving it weak. The symptoms are people going from active to being sluggish, lack of energy. The problem with identifying is that its slow. Like cancer it starts small and grows. However, this can take years to develop, so constant soul checks are important to soul heath. It also depends on the kind of Monster we are dealing with.

Plant Based, leaves will wilt. Slimes will have a hard time keeping form and feel as if there falling apart. Animal based can find fur, feather, or scale loss. Elemental based will find that they slowly losing their temp. Hot will be cold and cold will melt.   Some other base effects may be loss of weight, or yellowing of horns, teeth, and nails.  Also, it can’t spread, like at all. All these perobloms are caused by the lack of access to the soul. Light, food, and love, can’t get in or out. Thus, trapping there Hp, at what ever it was. And slowly over time eating away at it until there’s nothing left. Until the Hp is 0.

Now this can be cause by many things, however, to sum it up anything that can cause depression can cause this to grow. But like I said before it can’t spread, so a parent can’t give it to a child. As for a cure, there have been many attempts to cure it. Cutting it out is viable when its little but not when its big. As said before it will leave the soul weak. When it is big there are 3 things that can be done, 1 cut it out, again not the best, 2 love method, this involves you to live in a highly loving environment (IE family, friends), 3 and this is very dangerous, is burn it out and not with fire, Eco shrooms extract mixed with aloe vare and acid. Yes acid, citric. So, lemons or oranges. And that might not sound so bad but put onto a soul is a different thing. The prosses is extremely painful and the monster needs to be knocked out or strapped down.  

Now for humans, this takes on a host of new perobloms, you see the lights that happen in a human’s brain are closer to magic this cancer is used to. So instead of effecting the soul it affects the brain feeding on the electricity between nerves. Effectively becoming a new strain of the cancer. It was this strain that caused the name change from “Soul eater,” to “Hope eater.” (Yes, this wasn’t an accident it was on purpose that’s just to show old that page is.) Its appearance looks like a brain lesion, or black spots on a CT. Limbic brain is where it will constrain most of the times.  To human doctors it looks like common depression, however Monsters know different. This being the smell, and radiation. This leads into the symptoms.  This is lack of sleep, depression, or inconsistent apatite.  The human body has never experienced this kind of sickness before, but the human body is smart and will try and expel this sickness anyway it can. This being leaking from breasts, fainting, puke, and if left for too long, seizures. However, your body will also start to try and sweat it out. Again, the cause could be anything that causes depression, however unlike the monster strain this one can be spread by genetics because of its location. It has full access to the important cells, like blood cells. This gives it access to the circulatory system. However, it can only live in the brain and can’t spread to the rest of the body. With, if a woman was to conceive a child, unfortunately there is a large chance of the child not making it.  The cancer would smother the brain and, in its attempts, to try and grow.  

Now humans being the physical creatures that we are, means that the cancer has no choice but to do the same. So just removing it is a viable option. Nonetheless this doesn't mean that it's a walk in the park. We are dealing with a vary delicate human brain. One wrong move and its no more walking for you.  So that is an option. However, if you were to ingest the monster concoction called assassino di-ombre (it means shadow killer, again Asgore sucks at naming.) you could start to experience the same benefits but vary slowly. However, the love method is also viable, but Human and Monster family run differently. So, a loving environment depends on the person.

But misinformation is rampant among human doctors about Monster health. Some chose to ignore it all together, some listen to Monster health facts made by humans, and more commonly the doctor’s medical knowledge is too old. So, this leads to people miss understanding and just make it as nothing. This is why mc has it as bad as she dose.

Main OCs

Tiffany - originally a D&D NPC in my first homebrew campaign (Heart of Atlantis my beloved), then I grew to love her too much to leave her be.

Tiffany Mereign, ie Tiff, ie Theophania Athaliah Wilhelmina Fen’U-darah Mereign the Third, Queen of Atlantis, formerly Empress of the Atlantean Empire (now dissolved). Sea elf royalty, born on December 27th 1049ce, took the throne with her father as Regent in 1087ce after the assassination of her mother Larethire II. She fully took the crown and throne in 1139-1140ce after killing her father Elias for his numerous crimes including the discovery that he was responsible for her mother's death.

The D&D campaign Tiff first appeared in took place in 1139-40ce where the player character party helped Tiff revive a dead goddess and use her power to kill the usurper king Elias and end a war that threatened their people. Said goddess cursed Tiff to die a thousand deaths (not by her own hand) before she can finally rest, all because Tiff rejected the offer of ascension to godhood.

Tiff handled her immortality curse... badly, to say the least. At least she met and married her loving supportive wives Cassie and Anya who help her with her chronic pain and substance addictions.

Rana - Ranarox La'Rouge, originally started as a Haunted One Bard/Rogue in a Curse of Strahd campaign, then got repurposed and fleshed out as my Dark Urge/Durge OC for Baldur's Gate 3. Raised in a circus and wooed by every pretty face they see, Rana does everything in their power to fend off the Red that swirls around their vision that brings the Urge to kill. If their eyes turn red and you are within melee range, it is already too late for you to run away.

Rana's 'canon' storyline has them falling in love with Shadowheart and Lae'Zel, finding a way to spare Minthara despite being tortured by her, rediscovering their past as the leader of the Bhaalist cult, and saving their daughter Mala from being sacrificed by Orin the Red. They found Mala (instead of Yenna) wandering around Rivington. Jaheira recognized her first as she had been acting as Mala's foster mother, since Rana had smuggled Mala away years prior to protect her from the cult (Rana was a victim of familial abuse and SA and Mala is a result of said abuse whom Rana vowed to protect from repeating the cycle of abuse). Rediscovering their progeny put them both in danger as Orin stalked the party and stole that which Rana only just got back.

Rana resorted to killing Orin to protect their child, and renounced Bhaal within the heart of his temple. Bhaal stole back their very blood and life force, disowning them. Rana only lives on because Jergal claimed them as his champion, and while the Red is never fully gone, they finally see clearly for the first time. Before disowning their murder god father, Rana's blood was black deathly ichor of the unholy god, but after Jergal claimed them, their blood became red full of life and vigor.

Ina - (Belongs to my friend Poe, I just happen to be obsessed with her and am the leader of Ina's fanclub) Ina the Kobold is a chaos entity, a zealous oath of glory paladin devoted to a deified Hatsune Miku. She came into existence after my friend rolled up a completely randomized character for a D&D game, and quickly speared her way into my heart with her wacky antics and hilarious zeal for murder.

A little known tidbit about Ina is that she's a sleeper agent, Ina is not her full name. Her true name is Ignition, which is the trigger word to temporarily switch her from chaotic stupid kobold to calculated smart dragonborn. Her Ignition alter ego is scarily competent compared to Ina. She was created in a secret magical experiment and hatched from a magically irradiated dragonborn egg. Ignition voluntarily switches back into Ina the minute whatever mission or danger she was dealing with is complete, as Ina takes far less mental energy to exist.

She is made as a contingency plan for Tiffany, so that in the case she as the queen ever goes off the rails and goes against her own morals, Ina will be there to kill her and bring her back to her senses.

Erinyes - My demonsona as it were, a self insert that morphed kind of into their own entity. They're a cheese-loving fury demon called Erin-yes. I often use them as a chaotic mini-me, and a personification of my silliness and rage. Sometimes I'll shove them into things with varied success. In D&D they'd be a tiefling or cambion as a player character, but as an NPC they've appeared as a literal erinyes devil that tried to sell cheese to the players and tormented them at various points.

Claire - My rage-filled mixed-drow religiously traumatized death cleric. She was raised in a cult to a goddess that stole the name of other gods - Adrestia Andraste, the Lady in White, a homebrew drow goddess of death and war and motherly retribution. Claire's drow mother was the high priestess of the Lady, and in order to become the next high priestess, Claire had to kill her mother in a ritual battle.

Claire walked over enchanted coals, was baptized in holy fire, and slayed a dragon to become the next high priestess of the cult; doing so made her fireproof to everything but her own goddess's flames. On her back they etched an intricate tattoo that brands her as her goddess's chosen, which also allows her goddess to cause her searing pain when she does something she doesn't like. A proverbial shock collar.

Claire is bitter and jaded and tries to escape the cult many times, and eventually discovers the truth of her goddess's identity theft and devotes herself to the goddess's sister Lotte (the victim of the identity theft) instead. Lotte is a drow goddess of fate, death, craftsmanship, and magic, and gives Claire the power to mend and tear the weave of magic itself. Claire is a chosen of both goddesses, one willingly, one unwillingly, and her mission is to break her ties to the Lady in White for good.

Frownless - Ah my favorite eldritch edgelord. Frownless, also called The Frownless or Freddie the Frownless or even Thotarella/Thot by my dnd group (an inside joke), is a shapeshifter known as a shadowless - he doesn't cast a shadow on the ground. Shadowless are akin to eldritch changelings that are descendants of fey celestials exiled to a demiplane. They appear as orange-tinged red haired elven people with four yellow eyes.

Frownless in particular is a notable specimen as he got exiled for killing his cousin in a fit of rage, then made a name for himself as an assassin and overall nuisance. He was hired by Tiff's father to kill her but failed miserably and ended up working for her in a weird toxic relationship instead. He tried dropping a chandelier on her and missed. He loves catfishing people since he's a shapeshifter. I love using him as a punching bag. He ends up Tiff's drug dealer at various points and brings out the worst in her.

OT - My old self insert that morphed into their own entity. This one in particular is tied to their dragon age dalish elf iteration as my main Inquisitor Lavellan. OT is a dalish mage Inquisitor and lover of Josephine Montilyet. Originally named Overtaker as a funny play on Undertaker, and then shortened it to OT for brevity, and even made it stand for different names involving the initials O and T. I even used them the first time I ever played D&D in a oneshot where they ended up dying via magic item enchanted to cast power word kill!

I have a lot of OCs but only a few I routinely use, which as of making this post consist of the above. Other OCs include Lyn, Vrei'Dara, Billie, Domi, Inanna, Dela, Johanna, Jorster, Francis, Lotte, Minaeve, Jamboree, Riff, Kestrel, Grimshaw, Veronica, Atlantea, Styx, Judith, and many others.

45. What’s something unimportant / frivolous that they hate passionately?

Dark mode. Hero HATES any tech application in dark mode. If someone shows her a phone with an application in dark mode she will automatically set to changing it to light mode before even looking at anything else.

49. Would they eat something they find gross to be polite?

It depends! Hero is a bit of a food snob, so she’s pretty critical of meals that she thinks could be better. At the same time, though, she grew up with Southern Hospitality and not eating someone’s food is a Slight there so it kind of depends on how much she respects that person and if it was homemade or not (and how homemade it is—“from the box” is very different to “from scratch” to her). If someone, like, store bought something she thought was gross, she’d easily skip. However, if someone put their Heart and Soul into the food, she will try to politely eat it…with the most backhanded compliments possible.

She’s not an exotic eater though; if someone rolled up with escargot she’s skipping out no matter what lol

56. If they’re scared, who do they want comfort from? Does this answer change depending on the type of fear?

Her parents, though she already knows she’s not going to get that. :p In terms of who she Does get comfort from, the answer would be her dog in most circumstances. But now that she’s away from home…I don’t know if she has an answer! (She’s suffering.)

Wrote “SEE ME AFTER CLASS” on a student’s assignment (she’s a TA) and when they came she just tried to recruit them into the astronomy club that she’s the president of.

40. How do they respond to a loose handshake? What goes through their head?

She probably wouldn’t even notice LOL she seems like the type to have an over enthusiastic, very firm handshake while speaking over a mile a minute about whatever may be enthusing her at the time. If she did notice, she’d probably just make a little comment like “weak grip, huh?” And immediately move on.

43. What do they commonly misinterpret because of their own upbringing / environment / biases? How do they respond when realizing the misunderstanding?

This is a really good question lol I need to do some research to answer this tbh bc I recently decided that Xeno is an international student from Namibia, Africa (very inspired by a coworker from the same place)

The easiest one off the cuff though is just like. General language. It’s much more likely that others misunderstand her because of her accent, but there’s also times where she’s like “what. What are you trying to refer to right now.” She always believes that her own pronunciation is correct and will 100% make fun of American pronunciations that she thinks is dumb.

11. If someone was impersonating them, what would friends / family ask or do to tell the difference?

Ask about her crush of the week. Nobody could ever keep up with that other than her. (Including the friends and family asking…let’s hope they’d pick right)

35. What is the smallest, morally questionable choice they’ve made?

She keeps several things in her purse solely to drop in front of guys so that they pick it up for her and she can talk to them. The different choices are based on what she thinks will impress guys.

58. How many hobbies have they attempted to have over their lifetime? Is there a common theme?

A LOT. She’s the type of person that buys a bunch of things to get really into a hobby, loses interest in a few days, and never return. They’re primarily things that would be aesthetically pleasing, like letter writing, art, and journal keeping. I think she also likes hobbies primarily based on identifying things, such as birdwatching or looking into local flora.

I think one thing that anime reboot people miss is that the original bones run had a certain vibe that is hard to quantify, that even if a reboot would be good it wouldnt recapture same soul(ironic) that it had and people would dislike it just for that. For example reading all the manga, seeing all the fanworks, fanfics even comics and animations - still I haven seen anything recapture the vibe that "Death City Theme" had. Other things are good in their own way ofcourse but still

There is that period of time, from 2003 to 2009, where Studio BONES had so many excellent series that could have been long-running franchises because there was that serendipitous intersection of animation talent, trademark humor, and gaps to be filled in the entertainment market. It’s how you can have such a variety of genres of tones in Soul Eater, Ouran High School Host Club, and Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 that just clicked with an audience. (It probably helps that all three of these happen to be animated by the same branch of BONES, that being Studio C.) 

You point out that there is a vibe; I agree. I think the sense of humor, including the pregnant pauses, helped. I think the visual style taken with their worlds, props, and characters stood out. The music was catchy. The animation was fluid. 

But some of this may not be only a vibe, but also the time. When more and more studios, including ones outside of Japan, start taking the same approach, it makes the vibe less special. 

But also, just look at the difference between Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 and Brotherhood: beyond sticking closer to the source material, the colors are more digital and somehow less vibrant while still bright, the gags are more cartoonish and exaggerated, a lot of pathos is lost or delayed (Greed’s death in 2003 seems so much harder to sit through emotionally than the admittedly more bittersweet ending for him in Brotherhood). 

I think that led to a turning point in BONES. It meant that the choices to get something to connect with the audience meant not sticking to what made Soul Eater et al work, but to be more experimental: it’s how we get Space Dandy, which, while a completely different vibe, was more ambitious and maybe even more successful artistically for experimenting with genre, storytelling, continuity, character complexity, character designs, and completely different art direction and animation from episode to episode for a disconnected visual and genre experience that basically made it 26 different films rather than one uniform anime. 

And after Space Dandy, and after everything else in animation, it’s not the same field. We have My Hero Academia with animation that is more fluid and action-y than even what we got in Soul Eater, we have stories that hurt even more and are more bloody than Fullmetal Alchemist in Jujutsu Kaisen, we have slapstick in Pop Team Epic that overshadows the farce of Ouran. It’s not that the new works take away from the old, but right now, the newer stuff is on the mind of a lot of viewers, making stuff like Soul Eater et al nostalgia viewing, a way to see how we got to this point and to enjoy what came before--but not necessarily a style we want to see replicated in newer works, at least not totally replicated. 

I think industry practices, the use of computers in coloring and animation, would make it so obvious how a reboot of Soul Eater is not like the original. I think there would be an insistence on more closely replicating Ohkubo’s current style, which is absolutely different from what BONES did in the first anime. I don’t know that the music, animation, and acting would seem like a continuation of what worked in the first anime and instead would be a wholly different beast. 

And yeah, there isn’t a remake (which fan art and fan fics and fan comics all are) that quite matches what was in the first Soul Eater anime. I think there can be great works that go even further with the Death City aesthetic than the original series did--and maybe I would enjoy that in fan works, but I’m not sure I would in the anime or a manga continuation (seeing as we kind of got that in the finale of Fire Force, and, ugh, making the whole world look like Death City was a mistake--even if, yes, that is technically canon, given how the three Prologue chapters made just about all of the rest of the world also have the Death City aesthetic).

I have completed Star Ocean!!!!

So I only have one negative thing to say about First Departure R and its minor. To get it out of the way, this game has the same disease many RPGs have which is "bad final area and last boss" syndrome. I made the strongest sword I could possibly get for Roddick and half the enemies at the end, including the final boss, are healed if you hit them with it, I assume because they absorb dark element. I will be maining the Soul Eater next time

But there is currently a next time because I really liked the game! Its old and arcane and items are super important even though you'll never need even a fraction of whats available, and all of that PSP jank is so good, I love it. As a remake/remaster/port thing I really love the way the devs stayed true to the SNES game and the PSP game at the same time somehow. Its like the most respectful remaster ever

Besides just liking the game I've started a second playthrough because there are a lot of characters and I want to play with some of the ones I couldn't get before. Unfortunately it would take 3 playthroughs to use all of them and idk if I would go that far so soon after my first clear but the other reason I'm playing again is I understand the skill system now and I wasted so many points and so much EXP before that i basically just wanna see how broken overpowered I can get lol. I feel like theres an upper limit for sure cuz damage caps at 9999, but I wanna max out all skills for everyone and smith some fucked up armor and buy all the expensive items and stuff. Its got all the components of the kind of RPG I'm always looking for, even though just like with FF8 I wish it was just normal turn based combat. The spritework is really good though and it helps the fights be fun

I started the demo for second story and so far I really like the characters and the art and stuff but it kinda encapsulates a problem I have with sequels and modernizing things. The stagger system and all the battle stuff is fuckin awesome, I love it and its what drew me to the game in the first place, but the 3D environments look kinda crusty and the menus are all just blue and samey looking. The SO:FD menus let you change the background color and all the different tabs have colored icons next to them. And its nice cuz theres a lot of menus in that game. With Second Story its like you trade the PSP swag for convenience and sick battle systems. But I reallyyy like the PSP swag is the problem
