if ur a murderbot nerd now do u have any fun opinions abt it yet?
Oh my goddd you have no idea
I really, really, really like Murderbot because it comes at life with this perspective we don't often see that is very real among people who have already been through traumatic experiences, who developed skills and abilities to suvive that were once useful but no longer have context- that search that traumatized people go through to recalibrate and reorient ourselves in a world where we no longer really need those things to survive.
A bit personal here, but my own issues personally involved a lot of psychological abuse that made it difficult to trust my own perceptions of reality, and as a result I found I was very easy to lie to and manipulate.
To handle this, I became obsessive over writing things down, cataloging details and making notes of things as they happened- I'd carry recording devices and make audio recordings and stay up late at night to transcribe what they'd picked up, read those over and over again to reassure myself of things I wasn't certain about.
While doing this, there were others close to me that I felt responsible for, who I had to protect from others and protect myself from at the same time. Life was about two things: Evidence, and defusing threats
Over time, I learned to trust myself as my memories matched what had been recorded where their narrative didn't, but I never really kicked the habit. Like Murderbot, I had added something to my own programming that reassured me I was safe, that I was in control of myself, that I couldn't be mistaken or crazy or broken or used.
I'm only on book two, but already I see myself in Murderbot again. No spoilers here, but when I left home- left that dangerous context- I didn't need to repeat these patterns to survive anymore, but I still did, because I didn't know anything else anymore. It felt safe, comfortable, knowing knowing that the past couldn't repeat itself, because I'd written that flaw- blind trust in myself- out of my programming and replaced it with something else.
Still, though, I'd become something specially suited to thrive in a very specific environment. Nothing else felt right like followinghigh-risk situations, like witnessing and watching and recording and knowing I had proof of the truth where others might not.
People took notice. I wound up in security by accident, but's an environment that I thrive in due to the same patterns and behaviours I originally developed when I had no other choice. I climbed the ladder pretty quickly, once supervisors caught on that my reports were the most accurate, most objective, most factual, detail-oriented and timely. I keep others and myself safe and prioritize public safety above all else, and I perform well under pressure
Now I'm in a position where I often wonder, do I enjoy this job, or is it just what I'm good at? I have a set of skills now, but do I have the option of choosing not to use them? What would I be, if not this? Could I be anything else? Can Murderbot be anything else?
It has a set of skills that set it apart, make it different, special. It does what it knows best. But is it free? Does it want to be? What does it want? Does it have to do what it was built to do? What if it didn't?
I know what I'm good for. The idea of deliberately leaving what I'm good for for something uncertain, that I might hate, that I might be useless at- the choice to give up what was so important to me for so long and become deliberately obsolete?
Let go of my entire purpose? The only thing I know, that I fit so well into but don't actually know if I enjoy? Now that I can choose? Now that enjoyment is a luxury I can afford to consider?
Yeah, that resonates.
I like the Murderbot series so far because it feels the way I feel: Like the most significant and formative part of my story, the part where I became what I am, has already happened
And now I have to just. Keep going
Into... what?
It feels absurd. Like a microwave giving up on reheating food and deciding to start a life around abstract dance.
So, uh. Yeah. It's really very wild to see this same philosophical-ish dilemma I've been digging over in the back of my mind and in therapy for the last forever laid out so plainly in a genuinely exciting and enjoyable story like this. I feel much less alone, and I... kind of really need to see how it resolves, I think.
So, uh. Yeah. Read Murderbot, I guess
#Murderbot#Please read murderbot#Also it's so naturally refreshing and funny#Oversharing#I guess#This is fine to reblog tho it's chill#Very much resonating with the othering sense of purpose#Like what do you mean dream job#I don't have to worry about that this is what I was made for#Or close enough to it#I don't have to worry about finding purpose#But also thinking about that kinda blanks me out#No you don't get it I'm not a person like you are I have to do what I was built for#I'm better than you at it anyway#And don't I have a responsibility to do what I'm best at since you can't#Idk#Wouldn't you be upset if your blender stopped blending and became an EZ bake oven#Like you already have an oven#You need a blender#And I'm the best blender there is#Long post#Lol#Sorry#Oh also I'm autistic and asexual and hgenderqueer so *fart noise*

Blast from the past, when Bernadette was a bit more talkative in her interviews (Boston Globe, Dec. 1981)
*****************
It's 10:30 a.m. and Bernadette Peters, whose tiny frame is wrapped in a pink silk robe, spills out of the bedroom of her suite, wet curls framing her renaissance face. She has stepped from the shower to the interview.The shower was still running. But Steve Martin, wearing make-up, left this message: He's going back to bed. He had to get up for a too-early television appearance. He's tired.
Meanwhile, a maid armed with a vacuum cleaner is humming through her chores. An agent is on the phone, something about the sensational Bernadette Peters pictures in Playboy. And here she is, this little Botticelli blonde, mischief glinting in her eyes, gliding in the room. "Ta-ra! I'm here! Ta-ra!" She continues a pirouette that is simultaneously elegant and slapstick, then flops into a corner of the couch. The photographer, anxious to freeze the action, instantly follows her with his lens.
The questions you would most like to ask Bernadette Peters are questions she has already asked herself. All you have to do is be a good listener, guiding the conversation gently, preventing it from wandering, considering what she says with your heart as well as your ear.
Bernadette Peters is from a Sicilian family of bakers from Queens. Manhattan is home. Her family name is Lazzara. Only now, at the Carlyle, you have to be announced. You have to be on her list of visitors to be accepted into her suite.
She has never married. What is her passion?
It's her work, her career, developing her talents. She is an actress, a dancer, a singer, a flamboyant female whose delicate aura is disarming, misleading. She is not a helpless vanilla creature. She is a small but powerful bundle of dynamite, a woman not in full bloom but exploding with ambition.
It was always this way.
She started singing and dancing as a child in a TV program, "The Children's House." As a teenager, she appeared in the Bowery Lane Theater. Audiences loved her. So did one of her discoverers, Carol Burnett, who had her as a guest frequently on "The Carol Burnett Show."
Norman Lear also "discovered" her when she appeared in a Los Angeles stage tribute to the late George Gershwin. Lear offered her a guest role in "Maude," which led to the CBS-TV series, "All's Fair."
When Bernadette Peters was 19, she appeared in an off-Broadway musical spoof, "Dames At Sea." She got rave reviews. Then she appeared in a revival of "On The Town." Raves again. And a Tony nomination. More raves for her appearance in the doomed David Merrick's play, "Mack & Mabel," and a second Tony nomination.
One important thing you've got to understand about Bernadette Peters.
She has had her ups and downs.
She's unstoppable.
"Yuck, safe is boring. I want to grow. You want to know what creativity is? It's tapping places you didn't know, places you didn't know existed inside you. I am very distinctive looking. You want to know something? It's very limiting looking the way I look. When I started in show business, I wanted to get a job, any job, so I auditioned for the chorus. Nobody hired me to be a chorus girl. I stuck out too much. I didn't blend. Know what they wanted? They wanted a California sunshine orange-juice kid. I didn't look like, hey, your well-scrubbed typical American teenager.
"Know what I did? I straightened my hair, one of those blunt cuts. I wore collegiate clothes. But my hair was too hard to deal with, all natural curls. And I didn't like the clothes. So I said: The hell with it.' I said: I am going to be myself.' I said: This is what I am and this is it.' See, I didn't care by then. I wasn't getting work the other way so I decided to be myself. That takes guts. But there's only one of you in the world, so you might as well be the best you can be. Right?
"Being an individual is the most important thing in the world. I should have done it all the time. I thought a lot about myself before being myself. Maybe that was a good thing. It made being individual less scary. Individuality is a great release, don't you think? It frees you. You don't have to scrunch into somebody else's idea of you, a mold. Know what? I'm trying more and more to be me.
"It's a matter of stripping away your fears, one-by-one. We are all layered in fears and they've got to be pulled away. It's like counting backwards from 10 - 10, 9, 8 . . . As the numbers get lower, the peeling away gets easier. You get more and more courage to be yourself. The disappearance of each layer is the very thing that gives you courage.
"I was very insecure. Insecurity is poison. It's like wearing chains. It prevents you from going anywhere. It gets so it becomes hard to meet people, just to say, Oh, hello there!' You know what I mean?
"When I was a kid growing up in Queens, I studied Hollywood. I'd hear on the television that so-and-so was getting a divorce. Hollywood meant divorce. Hollywood meant a lot of diamonds and a lot of gowns. Hollywood meant nothing real. But all the time I wanted to be a star, a Hollywood star, but the old myths stuck in my mind. Those myths became my insecurities.
"Guess what happened? I said to myself: If you have a good car, a good home, nice things - is it going to change you?' And then I said to myself: No, no, no, you earned it. So I decided I deserved whatever my success brought. And layer No. 10 of my insecurities was gone! Peeled away!"
"I'm very strong. Can you tell that I am strong? Well, for a long time, I denied my own strength. I had this real fear of aggression. Know what I did? I played the typical feminine role. Helpless. Flighty. I figured a man is strong and a woman satellites around her man. I tried to tell myself that women are not strong. But underneath I was strong, very strong, and I allowed my strength to surface. How did I do it? I started making one decision, then another, and still another. Then I was making a lot of decisions and I was happy with those decisions. And I began enjoying the results of my decisions. That-- 9 of insecurity gone! Poof!
"I still look fluffy, don't I? Oh I know that. But I can change. You haven't forgotten that I'm an actress, have you? No? Well, there are such things as make-up. And wigs. I can change. The thing is that the more you assert yourself, the more you express yourself, the more people hear you. It's all attitude. It's not necessarily the way you look! It's all in being yourself. No, it's more than that! It’s the way I am.
"Want to know what my big dream in life is? I don't have a five- year plan, a 10-year plan. I don't have specific objectives. My dream is to grow, to be the best that I can be. I want to be proud of my work. Maybe marriage. Maybe kids. I said maybe. Then my other dream is to be self-assured. Not to have fears that I can't conquer. I am still haunted by fears, little ones. Oh, I'm shy. I can't make myself say, Hello' to a stranger, even if the stranger is someone I think I'd like to know. You want to know what I do? I practice saying hello to strangers.
"I'm terribly shy. Acting is a great outlet. On stage, I don't have to worry at doing and saying. In real life you have to worry, yes. You ask yourself: Have I spoken when I should not have spoken?
"My mother always told me I was beautiful. I didn't believe her. I didn't like what I saw in the mirror. I didn't think I was pretty enough or thin enough or popular enough. That was another layer of insecurity, something to be peeled away.
"Now I think I am distinctive looking, different looking. I don't think I am gorgeous. At least not in terms of what society thinks is gorgeous. When I love somebody, I love the person that the person is. I love Walter Matthau. To me, he's handsome because of the way he is, not the way he actually looks."-
"I had another hangup, still another insecurity that had to go. I thought that being a success meant that you had to stab someone in the back. The words, career-oriented and ambitious - I used to be afraid of those words. I used to call those words the back-stabbing words. Well, now I know. Having a career is not being bad. You did not have to step on or over anybody. Look, I got here in spite of myself. I got here despite all my drawbacks, all my insecurities. Why? Because I don't think of myself in terms of insecurity anymore.
"If I hear that someone doesn't like me, I say: Oh, they'll change their mind in the future. Later they'll like me. In two or three years, I'll do something that will make that person like me. I've been hired by people who said, before, that they didn't care for my work.
"I've established myself. I know part of this business is rejection. But I know a lot about myself. I can't live in a suburb. I know that just raising a family isn't enough. I've tried to knit. I don't like to knit. I've tried to sew. I made my graduation dress and, gee, I almost had to wear it. It was bad! I hate to crochet. But I love to act. And I act when I sing. When I'm on stage, when I do something exceptional, something I've never done before, I feel I've been someplace I've never been. And it's all happening inside me."

I believe that the first step in learning any programming language is making sure that you understand how to learn. Focus on programming techniques, problem solving, and analytical skills It enables programmers to edit and create a variety of content. With time, one can improve their programming skills. Entry 1 – Your preparedness prior to commencing your internship and how you assimilated into the organisation’s culture
“The change of life stages from a student to a professional is not always very simple” (Anjum, S. 2020). Preparing for the internship was a challenging, exciting and exhilarating experience leading up to the big first day. The original plans of the first week was to attend the Basketball Victoria head office located in Wantirna. Sadly, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, Internship host Matthew and Justine made the decision to transition my internship program online until we were able to return to the office space whilst maintaining social distancing rules. The Holmesglen subject ‘Transition to Professional Practise’, was an incredibly helpful and resourceful to refer to with all questions and enquiries regarding the internship. Before commencing the internship, I read over all the weekly slides and notes made during the lecture classes to ensure I am learning what the internship is expecting of me and how I can perform to their standards and expectations. Doing this ensured I was ready to take on any and all challenges that Basketball Victoria required of me and doing so allowed me to transition into the organisation’s way of working. Basketball Victoria’s community and culture is very community oriented as all staff were incredibly welcoming and helpful.
The first day of the internship was an introduction to Basketball Victoria and what missions and objectives they had for the school’s program department, which is what I would be working in. The schools program department were in the early stages of rolling out the Hoop Time Program which is a round robin basketball tournament that included close to every primary school in Victoria. This involved creating fixtures for the Hoop Time program that covered all teams and schools involved. Additionally, my skills and assets as an individual were recognised to be better suited for communications and customer service in light of the Hoop Time program. This was great as I have a strong background in communication with sales and communicating with people in general. Matthew assigned me with a range of duties and responsibilities to carry out that involved communicating with all stakeholders including schools, teachers, community halls, recreation services such as basketball court managers, and staff members from inside and out of Basketball Victoria.
Working well in the environment that I was in was fantastic overall and led me to having the confidence and calmness to carry out my tasks in a timely and professional manner that blended well with the organisations teamwork culture, making me a valuable team player who was willing to help others, and in return, receive advice and assistance from the teams’ colleagues. Higher education should aim to transition students into their professions and careers as smooth as possible by providing students a fair and equal opportunity to observe the industry they are studying, in real life experiences (Silva, P., Lopes, etal. 2016).

Using Software
Software usage is essential in the world of graphic/visual design. During my first year at the university, I first got my hands on the Adobe creative suite and especially enjoyed working with Illustrator and Photoshop. Both of these programs were essential in creating different assets of my Digital Identity and branding.
I used Adobe Illustrator to create my logo. Firstly, I had made some hand-drawn sketches to have at least a brief idea of what I wanted to create, before going digital.
A few days (and breakdowns) later I thought that I had somewhat figured out what my logo could look like and used Illustrator to create my first designs in a vector form. Illustrator is perfect for designing logos/working with type, as it’s a vector-based program and gives you the ability to work precisely in detail.
Here are some of my very first attempts to create my logo in illustrator. They are not exactly bad, but I wasn't completely happy with any of these either. Later on, after having a feedback session with Claire, I decided to create a very simplistic and minimalistic logo based on one of my earlier sketches.
This is what it first looked like in digital form. I was quite happy with it, but then I noticed that those A’s create an optical illusion of being thinner than the rest of the letters, even though in reality they weren't. I fixed it by duplicating the letter and moving it just a tiny bit to create a sense of thickness.
I then used the Shape builder tool to merge those two objects into one.
This has created a thicker letter, but the bottom part still needed some fixing. I solved the problem by creating a simple rectangle, placing it in front of my letter, and using Pathfinder’s Minus Front feature to cut off the excess part.
Here is the result, and as you can see it looks much better.
The whole piece still needed some adjustment though, so I decided to cut off the protruding part of the bottom L and used rulers and guides to make sure everything was distributed evenly.
Here is the final result, that I am going to be using for my branding.
I have also used Adobe Illustrator to create my CV.
This is an old version, that needed updating as well as some essential fixing. These are actually two standard portrait-oriented A4’s but after exporting it looked like it was a landscape-oriented CV. I thought that it looks quite unique and interesting, so I decided to make my final CV landscape-oriented as well.
This is the first version I created in Illustrator. I then got an idea to add hand-drawn elements to it using my graphic pen and the Brush tool in Illustrator, but as you can see, it didn’t turn out very great.
I decided not to pursue this idea any further as it didn’t look very professional, more like hand-written notes of what to fix. It could be an interesting idea for the future, but would definitely need much improvement. After finishing this CV, I then had another feedback session with Claire and did quite a lot of fixing afterward.
This is what my CV looks like now and I like it way more than before
Obviously, using guides and rulers was once again a very important thing to do.

I'VE HEARD THE FOUNDERS DIDN'T JUST GIVE IN AND TAKE WHOEVER THE VCS WANTED
But it's not necessarily a mistake to try something that has a 90% chance of failing, if you think about it, I can't imagine telling Bill Gates at 19 that he should wait till he graduated to start a startup and Steve Jobs wanted to invest in Microsoft. A investors often make companies take more money than they have in the past to make sure you don't contradict yourself. You know how there are some people whose names come up in conversation and everyone says He's such a great guy? So I'm supposed to finish college, then go work for another company as we're suggesting, he might well have gone to work for Apple. Even Newton fell into this trap. But because the lies are indirect we don't keep a very strict accounting of them.1 A lot of startups, whereas this is probably the first you've founded. Some startups could go directly from seed funding to a VC round; several of the companies we've funded have. A rounds already are high res.
Want to get hired by Yahoo? I've given two examples of things founders complain about. Object-oriented programming, and three and a half of them are bad: Object-oriented programming is popular in big companies, because their software is probably going to be bloated and full of expensive fittings. So it is a high school student? Though lie has negative connotations, I don't mean to suggest we should never do this. They just want to invest millions in a company the founders could get nothing. They ask it the way you might poke a hermit crab in a tide pool, to see what it does. Like a lot of things e. Don't just do what they tell you, and then everyone wants to buy you.
If you want to talk to the other board members, you just yell into the next gear. At Viaweb we got our first $10,000 of seed money from our friend Julian, but he was sufficiently rich that it's hard to do a really good job on anything you don't think about in the shower in the morning is more important than I'd thought. Y Combinator doesn't require vesting, because a we invest such small amounts, and b you're often forced to take deals you don't like. I'm often reluctant to go running, but once you publish some definite ambition, it switches directions and starts working in your favor. How do you decide?2 The trouble with consulting is that clients have an awkward habit of calling you on the phone.3 I think we're still at the beginning of this one. With individual angels you don't have to worry about. Why does it bother adults so much when kids do things reserved for adults? When I was in high school is: mental queasiness.4 PG, Thanks for the intro!5
It's harder to say about it has some kind of turf to protect, and this question is just to get you?6 So just keep playing. I think it can scale all the way to succeed is through following the rules.7 I could play all day. It wasn't the vet's fault; the cat had a congenitally weak heart; the anaesthesia was too much for it; but there was no one but him. Not all the people who list at ABNB, they list elsewhere too I am not claiming to be good at what they do. The disadvantage of taking money from less known firms is that people will assume, correctly or not, that you were turned down by the more exalted ones. But if someone had, they'd probably be quite rich now.
As one VC told me: If you were talking to a guy four feet tall whose ambition was to play in the NBA, I'd feel pretty stupid saying, you can do; and don't underestimate your abilities. I believe they conceal because they'd be frightening, not because they want to believe you're a hot prospect, because it meant we didn't have to pay much for infrastructure. I can't predict for sure which forces will prevail, but I'll describe them and you can ask each for advice about the other. They leave 20% as an options pool for later employees but they set things up so that they can hack the admissions process: that they can take the very same kid and make him seem a more appealing candidate than he would if he went to the local public school. And that's what the malaise one feels in high school either.8 In fact, you don't worry that it might come out badly, or upset delicate social balances, or that you won't be able to push back in the matter of control, because they get a big idea to appear in your head.9 But as I thought more about this project, I realized it would probably have been better for all of us, it wouldn't have been better just to tell us the truth: that there weren't any famous black scientists. Professors nowadays seem to have become professional fundraisers who do a little research on the side of the ledger; if you could, you'd have made it.
In fact most such rules are just hacks to manage large groups efficiently.10 But as I grew older, suburbia started to feel suffocatingly fake. But I am daily waiting for the line to collapse. They'd face some challenges if they wanted to make more, but not totally unlike your other friends. He likes to observe startups for a while to recover. Inexperienced angels often get cold feet when the time comes to write that big check. Of all the reasons we lie to kids to protect them. They may feel they have to make something people want. The example of a startup, managing them is one of their apartments at first, and since they don't have to pay much for infrastructure.11 You can go anywhere you want. As turned into de facto series B rounds.12
But that, if not beyond the bounds of possibility, is beyond the scope of this article. The traditions and financial models of the VC business both success and failure are self-perpetuating. They ask it the way you might poke a hermit crab in a tide pool, to see what it does. To be a startup you need to do: find a question that makes the world interesting.13 Well, maybe. I think about it, and let some MBA take over as soon as this thought occurred to me, because just about every startup I've seen grinds to a halt during fundraising, which can easily take 6 weeks. Only a great designer can. Y Combinator exerts less.

GNOME Wiki
I hate hate hate when I search gnome and this comes up! I love your name but I am not looking for you! Anyways here is the wiki article about it thought because it is still part of the gnome family...
GNOME
GNOME (/(ɡ)noʊm/) is a free and open-source desktop environment for Unix-like operating systems. GNOME was originally an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment, but the acronym was dropped because it no longer reflected the vision of the GNOME project.
GNOME is part of the GNU Project and developed by The GNOME Project which is composed of both volunteers and paid contributors, the largest corporate contributor being Red Hat. It is an international project that aims to develop software frameworks for the development of software, to program end-user applications based on these frameworks, and to coordinate efforts for internationalization and localization and accessibility of that software.
GNOME 3 is the default desktop environment on many major Linux distributions including Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, SUSE Linux Enterprise (exclusively), Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Pop! OS, Oracle Linux, SteamOS, Tails and Endless OS, as well as Solaris, a major Unix operating system; and provided as an official edition by Manjaro; also the continued fork of the last GNOME 2 release that goes under the name MATE is default on many Linux distros that targets low usage of system resources.
History
GNOME 1
GNOME was started on 15 August 1997 by Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena as a free software project to develop a desktop environment and applications for it. It was founded in part because K Desktop Environment, which was growing in popularity, relied on the Qt widget toolkit which used a proprietary software license until version 2.0 (June 1999). In place of Qt, GTK (GIMP Toolkit) was chosen as the base of GNOME. GTK uses the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), a free software license that allows software linking to it to use a much wider set of licenses, including proprietary software licenses. GNOME itself is licensed under the LGPL for its libraries, and the GNU General Public License (GPL) for its applications.
The name "GNOME" was initially an acronym of GNU Network Object Model Environment, referring to the original intention of creating a distributed object framework similar to Microsoft's OLE, but the acronym was eventually dropped because it no longer reflected the vision of the GNOME project.
The California startup Eazel developed the Nautilus file manager from 1999 to 2001. De Icaza and Nat Friedman founded Helix Code (later Ximian) in 1999 in Massachusetts; this company developed GNOME's infrastructure and applications, and in 2003 was purchased by Novell.
During the transition to GNOME 2 around the year 2001 and shortly thereafter there were brief talks about creating a GNOME Office suite. On 15 September 2003 GNOME-Office 1.0, consisting of AbiWord 2.0, GNOME-DB 1.0 and Gnumeric 1.2.0 was released. Although some release planning for GNOME Office 1.2 was happening on gnome-office mailing list, and Gnumeric 1.4 was announced as a part of it, the 1.2 release of the suite itself never materialized. As of 4 May 2014 GNOME wiki only mentions "GNOME/Gtk applications that are useful in an office environment".
GNOME 2
GNOME 2 was very similar to a conventional desktop interface, featuring a simple desktop in which users could interact with virtual objects, such as windows, icons, and files. GNOME 2 started out with Sawfish, but later switched to Metacity as its default window manager. The handling of windows, applications, and files in GNOME 2 is similar to that of contemporary desktop operating systems. In the default configuration of GNOME 2, the desktop has a launcher menu for quick access to installed programs and file locations; open windows may be accessed by a taskbar along the bottom of the screen, and the top-right corner features a notification area for programs to display notices while running in the background. However, these features can be moved to almost any position or orientation the user desires, replaced with other functions or removed altogether.
As of 2009, GNOME 2 was the default desktop for OpenSolaris. The MATE desktop environment is a fork of the GNOME 2 codebase (see Criticism, below.)
GNOME 3
GNOME 1 and 2 followed the traditional desktop metaphor, but GNOME 3, released in 2011, changed this with GNOME Shell, a more abstract metaphor where switching between different tasks and virtual desktops takes place in a separate area called "Overview". Also, since Mutter replaced Metacity as the default window manager, the minimize and maximize buttons no longer appear by default, and the title bar, menu bar and tool bar combined in one horizontal bar called "header bar" via Client-Side Decoration mechanism. Adwaita replaced Clearlooks as the default theme. Many GNOME Core Applications also went through redesigns to provide a more consistent user experience.
Criticism
The release of GNOME 3, notable for its move away from the traditional menu bar and taskbar, has caused considerable controversy in the GNU and Linux community. Many users and developers have expressed concerns about usability. A few projects have been initiated to continue development of GNOME 2.x or to modify GNOME 3.x to be more like the 2.x releases.
GNOME 3 aims to provide a single interface for desktop computers and tablet computers. This means using only input techniques that work on all those devices, requiring abandonment of certain concepts to which desktop users were accustomed, such as right-clicking, or saving files on the desktop.
These major changes initially evoked widespread criticism. The MATE desktop environment was forked from the GNOME 2 code-base with the intent of retaining the traditional GNOME 2 interface, whilst keeping compatibility with modern Linux technology, such as GTK 3. The Linux Mint team addressed the issue in another way by developing the "Mint GNOME Shell Extensions" that ran on top of GNOME Shell and allowed it to be used via the traditional desktop metaphor. This eventually led to the creation of the Cinnamon user interface, which was forked from the GNOME 3 codebase.
Among those critical of the early releases of GNOME 3 is Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel. Torvalds abandoned GNOME for a while after the release of GNOME 3.0, saying "The developers have apparently decided that it's 'too complicated' to actually do real work on your desktop, and have decided to make it really annoying to do". Torvalds stated that his objections were universally held by the varied Linux developers he knew. In 2013, Torvalds resumed using GNOME, saying "things had gotten much better in the past year" but noting that "they have extensions now that are still much too hard to find; but with extensions you can make your desktop look almost as good as it used to look two years ago". Torvalds has suggested that the "GNOME Tweak Tool" should be merged into GNOME 3.
As of 2015, critical reception has been much more positive. For example, Debian, a Linux distribution that had historically used GNOME 2, switched to Xfce when GNOME 3 was released but readopted GNOME 3 in time for the release of Debian 8 "Jessie".
Releases
Release cycle
Each of the component software products in the GNOME project has its own version number and release schedule. However, individual module maintainers coordinate their efforts to create a full GNOME stable release on an approximately six-month schedule, alongside its underlying libraries such as GTK and GLib. Some experimental projects are excluded from these releases.
GNOME version numbers follow the scheme v.xx.yy. Here, v is a major version, which can include large changes such as ABI breakage; these have no regular schedule and occur in response to requirements for large-scale changes. xx is a minor version, released on the above schedule of approximately every 6 months, in which the 1- or 2-digit number's parity indicates the type of release: if xx is even (e.g. 3.20) the release is considered stable, whereas if xx is odd it represents a current development snapshot (e.g. 3.21) that will eventually evolve into the next stable release. yy indicates a point release, e.g. 3.20.6; these are made on a frequency of weeks in order to fix issues, add non-breaking enhancements, etc.
GNOME releases are made to the main FTP server in the form of source code with configure scripts, which are compiled by operating system vendors and integrated with the rest of their systems before distribution. Most vendors only use stable and tested versions of GNOME, and provide it in the form of easily installed, pre-compiled packages. The source code of every stable and development version of GNOME is stored in the GNOME git source code repository. Interested users can always obtain a snapshot of the _master_ development branch or any other branch/tag and build a cutting-edge version for their own use.
A number of build-scripts (such as JHBuild or formerly GARNOME) are available to help automate the process of compiling the source code.

The Official GNOME Human Interface Guidelines
Since GNOME 2, productivity has been a key focus for GNOME. To meet this end, the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) were created. All GNOME programs share a coherent style of graphical user interface (GUI) but are not limited to the employment of the same GUI widgets. Rather, the design of the GNOME GUI is guided by concepts described in the GNOME HIG, itself relying on insights from cognitive ergonomics.[74] Following the HIG, developers can create high-quality, consistent, and usable GUI programs, as it addresses everything from GUI design to recommended pixel-based layout of widgets.
During the GNOME 2 rewrite, many settings deemed of little value to the majority of users were removed. Havoc Pennington summarized the usability work in his 2002 essay "Free Software UI", emphasizing the idea that all preferences have a cost, and it is better to make software behave correctly by default than to add a UI preference to get the desired behavior:
A traditional free software application is configurable so that it has the union of all features anyone's ever seen in any equivalent application on any other historical platform. Or even configurable to be the union of all applications that anyone's ever seen on any historical platform (Emacs *cough*). Does this hurt anything? Yes it does. It turns out that preferences have a cost. Of course, some preferences also have important benefits – and can be crucial interface features. But each one has a price, and you have to carefully consider its value. Many users and developers don't understand this, and end up with a lot of cost and little value for their preferences dollar.
Accessibility
GNOME aims to make and keep the desktop environment physically and cognitively ergonomic for people with disabilities. The GNOME HIG tries to take this into account as far as possible but specific issues are solved by special software.
GNOME addresses computer accessibility issues by using the Accessibility Toolkit (ATK) application programming interface, which allows enhancing user experience by using special input methods and speech synthesis and speech recognition software. Particular utilities are registered with ATK using Assistive Technology Service Provider Interface (AT-SPI), and become globally used throughout the desktop. Several assistive technology providers, including Orca screen reader and Dasher input method, were developed specifically for use with GNOME.
Internationalization and localization
Main article:
Internationalization and localization
The internationalization and localization of GNOME software relies on locale.
Desktop
GNOME provides three different login sessions for desktop:
GNOME Flashback
GNOME Flashback is an official session for GNOME 3. It is based on GNOME Panel and Metacity (window manager), it is lightweight, has lower hardware requirements and uses less system resources (memory and CPU) than GNOME Shell. It provides a traditional and highly customizable taskbar (panel) with many plug-ins bundled in one package (gnome-applets) including a customizable start menu. It provides a similar user experience to the GNOME 2.x series and has customization capacities as built-in.
GNOME Flashback consists of the following components:
Metacity (window manager)
GNOME Panel – a highly configurable taskbar
gnome-applets – a collection of useful applets for the GNOME Panel
GNOME Shell
This session is based on GNOME Shell and Mutter (window manager). It is default and offers a mobile-like paradigm for launching applications and accessing open windows and virtual desktops, but through the use of extensions it is possible for the appearance to be that of a traditional taskbar and provide a basic start menu. This session uses more RAM and CPU due to use of JavaScript for GNOME Shell and all of its extensions, and requiring 3D acceleration.
GNOME Shell is the default graphical shell of GNOME. It features a top bar holding (from left to right) an Activities button, an application menu, a clock and an integrated system status menu.[80][81] The application menu displays the name of the application in focus and provides access to functions such as accessing the application's preferences, closing the application, or creating a new application window. The status menu holds various system status indicators, shortcuts to system settings, and session actions including logging out, switching users, locking the screen, and suspending the computer.
Clicking on the Activities button, moving the mouse to the top-left hot corner or pressing the Super key brings up the Overview.[82] The Overview gives users an overview of current activities and provides a way to switch between windows and workspaces and to launch applications. The Dash on the left houses shortcuts to favorite applications and open windows and an application picker button to show a list of all installed applications.[80] A search bar appears at the top and a workspace list for switching between workspaces is on the right. Notifications appear from the bottom of the screen.[83]
GNOME Classic
Beginning with GNOME 3.8, GNOME provides a suite of officially supported GNOME Shell extensions that provide Applications menu (a basic start menu) and "Places menu" on the top bar, and a panel with windows list at the bottom of the screen that lets quickly minimize and restore open windows, a "Show Desktop" button in the bottom left and virtual desktops in the bottom right corner.
Mobile
By using GNOME Shell, client-side decoration, and the libhandy library, GNOME and its applications provide a responsive user interface that works on all the three desktop, tablet, and mobile form factors without the need to be designed and compiled separately for each one.
Development
GNOME is developed by The GNOME Project, and, like most free software projects, GNOME development is loosely managed. Discussion chiefly occurs on a number of public mailing lists.GNOME developers and users gather at an annual GUADEC meeting to discuss the current state and the future direction of GNOME.[ GNOME incorporates standards and programs from freedesktop.org to better support interoperability with other desktops.
GNOME is mainly written in C, XML, C++, C#, HTML, Vala, Python, JavaScript, CSS, and more. A number of language bindings are available
Development platform
The GLib data structures and utilities library, GObject object and type system and GTK widget toolkit comprise the central part of GNOME development platform. This foundation is further extended with D-Bus IPC framework, Cairo 2D vector-based drawing library, Clutter accelerated graphics library, Pango international text rendering library, PulseAudio low-level audio API, GStreamer multimedia framework, and several specialized libraries including NetworkManager, PackageKit, Telepathy (instant messaging) and WebKit.[90]
GNOME Display Manager (GDM), which manages user sessions, X and Wayland alike.
Tracker automatically searches the specified directories for files and keeps an index of them to provide fast search; heavily integrated into GNOME Shell and GNOME Files
GVfs, an abstraction layer framework for file systems augmenting GIO; well integrated into GNOME Files and GNOME Disks
dconf a backend for GSettings
Mutter, the Wayland compositor and X Window Manager
Linux color management, udev, etc.
Evolution Data Server, responsible for managing mail, calendar, address book, tasks and memo information
Meson is replacing GNU Build System (autotools) as build automation tools of choice
BuildStream a distribution agnostic build and integration tool
Dependencies
The GNOME desktop environment does not consist solely of the graphical control element library GTK and the core applications that make use of it. There are quite a few additional software packages that make up the GNOME desktop environment, such as the above.
Wayland or X Window SystemMain article:
Wayland (display server protocol)
GNOME runs on Wayland and the X Window System. Wayland support was introduced in GNOME 3.10 and deemed "for the majority of users […] a usable day to day experience" by 3.20, at which point Wayland became the default user session. GNOME 3.24 will extend Wayland compatibility to Nvidia drivers. With GNOME 3.30, it is possible to run GNOME without X.Org Server, using only Wayland.
systemd
In May 2011 Lennart Poettering proposed systemd as a GNOME dependency. As systemd is available only on Linux, the proposal led to a discussion of possibly dropping support for other platforms in future GNOME releases. Since GNOME 3.2 multiseat support has only been available on systems using systemd. In November 2012 the GNOME release team concluded there will be no compile time dependency on systemd for basic functionality, like session tracking. For non-basic functionality, like power management, compile time dependency is possible. For example, there is no concept of systemd inhibitors in alternatives like consolekit. A package manager may want to ensure that the system is not turned off while the upgrade is taking place.
Application
Core Applications
GNOME Core Applications
There are a large number of GTK and Clutter-based programs written by various authors. Since the release of GNOME 3.0, The GNOME Project concentrates on developing a set of programs that accounts for the GNOME Core Applications. The commonalities of the GNOME Core Applications are the adherence to the current GNOME Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) as well as the tight integration with underlying GNOME layers like e.g. GVfs and also with one another e.g. GOA (gnome-online-accounts)settings and GNOME Files with Google Drive and GNOME Photos with Google Photos. Some programs are simply existing programs with a new name and revamped user interface, while others have been written from scratch.
Games
GNOME Games have the look and feel of the GNOME Core Applications and are released simultaneously with GNOME. All have been rewritten to conform to the current GNOME Human Interface Guidelines.
Development tools
Programmers have written software to provide development tools consistent with the GNOME desktop and to facilitate the development of GNOME software.
GNOME Builder is the new integrated development environment, Anjuta is the older one. Glade Interface Designer software constructs graphical interfaces using the graphical control elements in GTK. Devhelp is an API browser, Accerciser an accessibility explorer.
There are several debugging tools, including Nemiver, GtkInspector and Alleyoop, have also been provided to facilitate development of GNOME software.
Integration options for third-party development tools (e.g. NoFlo) also exist.
The libsoup library enables access to HTTP servers from GNOME applications.
BuildStream is a flexible and extensible framework for the modelling of build and CI pipelines in a declarative YAML format, written in Python. Its mascot is a Beaver, because beavers build things in a stream.

That concludes that! It is everywhere though! Once again Thank you Wiki!

What Is the Best Programming Language for Robotic Palletizer?
It additionally is determined by your programming expertise and how much time you have to study a brand new language. There is really no “greatest” programming language for robotics. There is simply the most effective programming language in your project and your programming expertise. Years handed and programming languages became extra advanced. People started to make use of common-purpose, high-degree languages to control their robotic palletizer https://columbiaokura.com/products/robotic-palletizers/.
While this is not uncommon in different automated control techniques, the dearth of standardization of programming methods for robots does pose sure challenges. For example, there are over 30 completely different producers of commercial robots, so there are also 30 completely different robot programming languages required.
FANUC robots have been tackling advanced and standard operations for 30 years. Whether you're palletizing a full layer or individual bins, bags, pails or drums our methods are quick, regular, and dependable. Probably the four hottest languages for robotics are Python, C#, C++ and MATLAB. They are all great options and I even have used them many times.
They will be comfortable studying any new language if and when it is required. Here's a listing of the highest programming languages for robotics to get you started. If you might be critical about robotics, I’d suggest learning C/C++. Robotics programming stretches from the bottom level (embedded motor and sensor management) all the way in which up to high-stage Artificial Intelligence. C++ is among the few languages which excels in any respect of these.
Almost every robotic manufacturer has developed their own proprietary robotic programming language, which has lengthy been one of the issues in industrial robotics. You can become familiar with several of them by studying Pascal. However, you're still going to have to learn a new language each time you start using a brand new robot brand. If you're new to robotics, you wish to study the programming languages which are literally going to be helpful for your profession.
Solutions for Palletizing
is often custom-designed to deal with a number of specific merchandise. Robotic palletizing methods are able to dishing out and conveying pallets, metering cases on the product infeed and utilizing robotics to palletize instances and apply slip sheets the place required. A robotic palletizer can handle a number of models at a time based on pallet configuration, and types a number of layers on a pallet after choosing the products off of a conveyor. Robotic palletizing solutions can easily accommodate completely different pallet patterns and product sorts.
The Arduino microcontroller uses a programming language based mostly on C and is an effective way to study the basics of this necessary language whilst doing palms-on robotics. The hottest language in robotics is probably C/C++ (C++ is an object-oriented successor to the C language).
If you're keen about robotics and want to program industrial robotics system, I recommend learning C. This will permit you to work on advanced robotics projects, and will make learning any other language you might be prone to want later much simpler. These steps are repeated again and again till we now have achieved our aim. The extra times we are able to do this per second, the finer management we could have over the system. The Sobot Rimulator robot repeats these steps 20 times per second (20 Hz), but many robots should do this thousands or tens of millions of times per second in order to have sufficient management.
FANUC Palletizing Robots
These libraries enable interplay with low-degree hardware, allow for real-time performance and are very mature programming languages. These days, you may most likely use C++ more than C, though C stays some of the efficient programming languages out there.
PalletTool and PalletPRO
Python can be very popular as a result of its use in machine learning and likewise as a result of it may be used to develop ROS packages - see below. Learning to code is likely one of the most necessary abilities for building and programming robots. Before you take a robotics course or build your first robot, follow fundamental coding in a well-liked language like Java, C++, or Python.
Remember our previous introduction about totally different robotic programming languages for different robotics techniques and velocity requirements. One method of controlling robots from multiple producers is to make use of a Post processor and Off-line programming (robotics) software program. With this method, it's possible to handle model-specific robotic programming language from a universal programming language, similar to Python (programming language). nonetheless, compiling and importing fixed off-line code to a robot controller doesn't allow the robotic system to be state aware, so it can't adapt its motion and get well as the environment adjustments. Unified real-time adaptive management for any robotic is presently attainable with a number of different third-get together instruments.
Many people agree that C and C++ are required languages in robotics. Because a lot of hardware libraries used in robotics use one of these languages.
Robotic Palletizers
All robotic applications need parallelism and occasion-based mostly programming. Parallelism is the place the robot does two or extra issues at the same time. Most programming languages depend on threads or complicated abstraction lessons to deal with parallelism and the complexity that comes with it, like concurrent entry to shared sources. URBI provides a higher level of abstraction by integrating parallelism and occasions within the core of the language semantics. Due to the extremely proprietary nature of robotic software, most manufacturers of robotic hardware additionally present their own software program.
Robots require their software program to guarantee that management commands are created rapidly and at once, and that they do so utilizing resources that are typically rather more limited than your common laptop. Failure to generate up-to-date, reliable management alerts in time ends in the robot losing management, and within the case of essentially the most advanced robotics, this may be very dangerous, costly, or even lethal. For this cause, the languages of alternative for industrial and industrial robotics builders are people who provide one of the best efficiency, often at the cost of readability and maintainability. The clear winner on this class stays good outdated C, which is used in the majority of these functions.
In some circumstances, specific purposes use niche languages that are specifically nicely-suited to the task. For instance, I've heard that Ada (a language I am not conversant in) is used a lot for avionics.
C++ entered the robotics landscape in 1982, Python in 1990 and MATLAB in 2012. The C/C++ language is one of the most widely used programming languages in robotics.

Frequently asked questions of programming.
• Should I learn Python or JavaScript? • Data Science vs Web Development vs App Development, which one should I choose? • Why should I learn Web Development when there are popular Web Developing tools like Wix & WordPress? • All these points made me confused 😕 about what should I do?
So before starting with the questions Here's something about who I am and What makes me qualified to answer such questions? I'm a gradiot (an idiot who did his graduation and who has wasted money and time getting zero skills from college while there's an actual opportunity to learn everything online for free). Yes, I am a CS graduate. I have a great desire to make things, you might know the feeling of IT'S ALIVE if you have developed anything. During my college years I came across multiple technologies from Arduino to Raspberry pi, from PHP to JavaScript, Python, flutter you name it. I tried to learn and understand various technologies not due to college curriculum, but due to my desire to learn more and google 😎. Throughout my journey I encountered many questions and here are some of the questions I think will help you guys. Hope You'll like it.
Should I learn Python or JavaScript?
Before I start with why Python🐍 or JavaScript⚡. Let's talk about programming in general. Programming is a way of thinking and implementing the logic you create in a language that machines understand. Now there are styles or you can say structures of programming aka programming paradigms like Object-oriented programming (OOPs), Functional programming, procedural programming, etc. As a developer, you should at least know one of these paradigms. The more paradigms you know the broader choices you'll have for creating efficient and flexible code.
Back to the topic, Python and JavaScript both support OOPs and functional programming along with other paradigms. JavaScript is considered as the king of web programming that is used to create highly functional and dynamic websites. It has a vast ecosystem of libraries and frameworks to choose from like ReactJS, Angular, and Vue for front-end and NodeJS for the backend. You can also create native Apps for phones using React Native in JavaScript. So, with JavaScript, you can develop full-fledged websites as well as mobile applications. Whereas, Python is Best-suited programming language for Machine learning and data science. It has multiple Libraries like Keras, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn, etc. Along with that, Python is easy to use and has large community support. You can also create websites in python using frameworks like Django and Flask. You can also create apps in python as well using Tkinter, kiwi, etc. Both languages have powerful rounding development.
TL;DR Here is my perspective on this topic. As a developer, everyone must know basic web development since Machine learning and Data Science is a service-based skill While Web and App Development is a product-based skill. Hence, Data Science and Machine learning people are called engineers and not developers. Notice the very subtle difference between an engineer and a developer. Also, you know Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, well they started with web dev and created their products. Ask yourself what you want, define your goals, and then choose wisely and always bet on JavaScript.
Data Science vs Web Development vs App Development Which one should I choose?
If you are reading this, you might be knowing very well the pay of a Data Science and ML engineers as compared to a Web Developer or an App Developer. All this huge burst about AI is the future and might very well draw you towards thinking that even I should learn Data Science for a huge package and a job opportunity. Here's the ugly truth, it's hard to get a job in Data Science since companies will prefer a person having the Domain knowledge and usually majoring in Mathematics and statistics, you should at least have Masters or Ph.D. for getting a job in this field. For Example- A fintech company will choose a CFA or Finance major rather than a CS engineer and teach them Data Science since python is easy and it's the efficiency that counts. So, the person with finance knowledge is well suited for the job. However, As I said It's hard to get a job, not impossible. Some CS grads have got into data science and are earning handful. All you need to learn is python and some libraries and mathematics. Now, As I said before, data science is a service-based skill you are not technically a developer you're an engineer who is figuring out solutions for a given problem. On the other hand, being a web or app developer means developing products. You can create applications and websites and release them to earn using ad revenue, selling them, or even creating and maintain them for companies that way you don't have to rely on companies to give your services. I suggest you to first, learn web development and then Data Science while earning through your web dev skills. That way you will have a decent skill set, portfolio, and a budget to start experimenting into the world of machine learning where processing power is everything.
Why should I learn Web Development when there is a popular Web Developing tool like Wix & WordPress?
WordPress and Wix are popular content management systems. They are best for creating small websites and blogs. Yes, they made it easy for anyone to create websites but that doesn't mean web developers' jobs are gone. You can't create Amazon, Netflix, Twitter, and large fully functional websites using them. So, if you are trying to be a low-level web developer, you can pretty much say goodbye to developing websites. You can google top trending tech skills in demand and you will find AngularJS, ReactJS, NodeJS developers in demand. Not only websites but you can also create native applications for android and iOS using React-native and games using ThreeJS a JavaScript library. Possibilities are endless, all you have to do is START. I'll suggest you start with MERN stack just my personal opinion but you can research and pick whichever stack you like.
Is NodeJS better than Django?
Before comparing let's talk about what is NodeJS and Django. Node JS is a JavaScript runtime taken out of the client-side browser environment which uses OS binding for I/O, and Django is a Python framework. So comparing both is like comparing apples with oranges. Though let's have these points clear. When It comes to performance, Yes. NodeJS is faster than Django or in general python since it's written in C++ and is a JS runtime. You ask why? because JavaScript is faster than python because it works on an asynchronous non-blocking object model. When It comes to scalability, No. Django or python, in general, is highly scalable as the caching of applications is quite easy. Django is a high-level Python Web framework that encourages rapid development and clean, pragmatic design. With the introduction of npm which stands for the Node Package Management system, the open-source community has been boomed towards NodeJS since managing packages and dependencies has never been that easy. Also, npm is far better than pip when it comes to package management, you can research about it. Here are some of the big fishes and the backend tech they preferred for their development. Uber, Twitter, eBay, Netflix, Duckduckgo, PayPal, LinkedIn, Trello, Mozilla, GoDaddy are some big names using Node JS as their backend technology. Pinterest, Instagram, Eventbrite, Sentry, Zapier, Dropbox, Spotify, YouTube are also some big names using Django as their backend technology. Notice the trend here, Uber, Twitter, and Netflix are some of the applications that priorities performance whereas Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube requires a lot of space and thus scalability is their priority. So, the choice is upon you what you want scalability or performance.
All these points made me confused 😕 about what should I do?
First, ask yourself what do you enjoy doing. Do you like to create games, apps, websites? What intrigues you? What sparks your curiosity? I have listed some of the questions depending upon the choices you make.
• GAME Development – If you want to get into the game development industry, you will have to learn C# or C++ for hardcore game development. You can create web games using ThreeJS or any other library but you won't be exactly a game developer.
• App Development – You can create an application using JAVA for android or Swift for iOS. Further, you can use React-native or Flutter for creating apps that would run on both android and iOS. If you want web apps, you can use Ionic as well.
• Web Development – There are many stacks (a set of technologies that suits well with each other) you could choose to learn like MEAN stack, MERN stack, LAMP stack, etc. You can create a website from WordPress or Wix as well. Develop an interactive portfolio for yourself with the stack you find interesting.
• Data Science, ML, AI – Start with python and take courses on data science, mathematics, machine learning, from popular websites like Udemy or LinkedIn. Start competing on Kaggle and maintain your Kaggle profile. Second, do yourself a favor and start learning algorithms and data structures in the language that fits your answer to the above question. Third, Start applying for internships with some projects and try to make an exemplary portfolio. Maintain your GitHub, LeetCode or HackerRank or any other profiles which you can include on your resume.
I hope this might help you; I tried my best to answer some of the questions that I've faced throughout my journey as a gradiot. If you feel that I'm missing something or something is wrong please feel free to correct me in the comment section. Thank you for your valuable time.

on transgenderism & metaphysics. ?
"But when trans folks are systematically reviled, mocked and disempowered; when they are disproportionately harassed by police, arrested and brutalized -- both on the street and in custody -- and when there are active campaigns or existing laws in many countries to deny them basic human rights, one cannot merely have a polite discussion about the nature of gender and sex. ... It is complicity with systemic violence and active encouragement of oppression. ...
It is not permissible to debate the lives of people who are oppressed and murdered. Those who treat this like an intellectual game should not be engaged with. They should be told to [unprintable here] [...] Every time.”
- Mark Lance, "Taking Trans Lives Seriously,” InsideHigherEd
When individuals are discriminated against in protected contexts -- for example law enforcement, education or medicine -- because of metaphysical claims that they make, this is unjust; we owe it to them to remedy the discriminatory behavior. But it is not illegitimate for us also to debate the sense and validity of the metaphysical claims, or to argue what nondiscriminatory consequences those claims may have.
Law enforcement and medicine, for example, can be held to proper standards of practice and care, with or without endorsing a metaphysics. (This can even extend to the courtesy and the grant of dignity involved in using preferred names and pronouns as reasonably possible (on pronouns, see more below) - the uproar over the inviolable sacredness of transgender names and pronouns, however, loses ground.
My claim here, of course, is that while transgender persons’ claims to equitable treatment by law enforcement, doctors, schools, etc., are entirely legitimate, and should be enforced, transgender claims (and this, I think, is distinct from claims made by the gay community, for example, or by ethnic groups) generally go an additional step to become metaphysical in nature: after all, these claims are not, or not only, about feeling or thought, but also about reality; not about gender identity, but about (nonsubjective) gender itself. It is always secondary that the transwoman, for example, feels like woman, dresses as one, lives as one, or perhaps undergoes surgery to do so; the most important claim is that she IS one (that "transwomen are women, period” ...). Despite the deeply subjective experience of trans identity, the claim always ends by being objective.*
It is not enough, as with gay persons, to guarantee to trans persons the negative freedoms to love, to express themselves publicly, to cohabit, enjoy spousal benefits, marry, raise children; trans people want to do all of these things as well, but they want one thing more - to be regarded, in language as a marker of objective fact, as their transgender. “Homosexuality," by contrast, names a biological and/or psychological orientation, something certified potentially both by subjective expression and by evidence of behavior.```` “Transgenderism” somehow demands more: that, after an initial certification by the transgendered individual, those around the individual re-certify the individual's status from without, not via connections in evidence, but via a running show of respect for and belief in their declaration. Famously, this involves the use of the requested gendered names, words and pronouns -- including newly minted pronouns (zhe/zher are not the only ones expected in some quarters) -- to suit the case. Most famously, it involves public recognition of gender by admission to single-gender spaces (bathrooms, etc.). In short, this certification cannot take place unless, always and everywhere, the right language is used and the right positive permissions are given. Any withholding of this certification, in opinions such as Dr. Lance’s, is tantamount to violent assault; is any doubt and discussion to be regarded as mockery or abuse?^^^
Homosexual persons seek no such positive intervention:** letting them "be who they are” is a matter of classic liberal freedom and privacy, of leaving them in peace and all appropriate autonomy to live their lives. The gay individual does not expect to be positively (determinately) treated according to a special self-conception, as if some fact about him/herself (which might well be confusing or ambiguous to others) needs to be reflected back to him/her in language and programmed space. He/she expects to be let alone, more or less, to get on with things, as heterosexual persons are permitted to do.
Many African-Americans, to take another example, are even less eager for any metaphysics to be attached to their being (and this is true even where they are concerned with an identity politics of cultural cohesion and distinctiveness); such a metaphysics was, after all, the nightmare of the American nineteenth century, with its notions of the three-fifths person, its ethnologies of a race deemed less departed from animal ancestors, and so on. Respect and self-realization, for many African-Americans, involves being let alone in the freedoms and rights enjoyed by those around them - treated, if anything, less as though their skin color and ancestry comes with some special status of essential being.
But transgendered persons seem to require just such reflection to successfully be or become themselves,^ and the most interesting case is that of the pronoun. He/him, she/her, zhe/zher, and so on: the most important fact about all of them is that they are pronouns in the third person. They are used when an individual is spoken of, not spoken to (in which case the genderless, numberless “you” is still held to be appropriate). It is possible, of course, to contemplate many situations in which one would use the third person with the referent transgender person present: A says to B, in trans C’s presence, “C will help you with this job.” But fundamentally -- grammatically, logically and metaphysically -- the third person presumes the immediate absence of its referent. And so, when transgender person C is not so present, we are asked (never mind if the asking is too often a demand), by C or in C’s name, to use the requested pronouns. To police ourselves always to respect the metaphysics of that which we have learned that someone is -- an objective metaphysics which can only ever proceed from subjective certification (for no one can know for anyone else that they are transgender), from psychological certainty not just about feeling but about reality -- from what psychoanalysis called “fantasy”. (A transgender person may dress as their transgender, but need not; may undertake surgical alteration to approach as far as possible their transgender’s physiology, but need not; and so on. There are no sufficient outward facts that can deliver the truth of an individual’s transgenderism -- only the subjective say-so [not a fiat but an est] of the individual can do this; in the hazardous terms we have been forced to coin for children in this context, a say-so which is “ consistent, persistent, and insistent.” And yet, once the inward, subjective fact of transgenderism has been delivered, all of human reality must objectively reflect this fact in the objective worlds of language and space. This is a demand not simply for respect, but for belief - which can be defined, in a medieval-Aristotelian mode which seems to fit here, as metaphysical certainty, in this case not so different than that surrounding transubstantiation: a conviction that one is literally another.)
If we can adapt and truncate Nicolas Chamfort’s notion that “love is the exchange of two fantasies,” we can begin to see what is asked for at this extent by the transgendered individual: that we negatively free them from unjust restraint, yes; that we render them all “basic human rights”, yes; but also that we join in their fantasy, their psychological certainty (physically and behaviorally reflected more, or less, or even not at all) about the metaphysics of their being. It is not enough to treat a transwoman as a woman (indeed, this alone would be condescending) -- we must believe that she (she) is a woman. The transgendered individual is, by Chamfort’s lights, asking of society at large what the gay individual does not ask: to be not merely let alone, not merely protected, but lovedin their reality. Believed. I will say that you are a capitalist, a mother, a teacher, a ruler, a criminal, a victim, a soldier, a seeker, a child of God, a miraculous mass of cells and water and energy, if you will say that I am woman or that I am a man. This is the exchange of fantasies. And who is to say that the mutual owing of such belief is not the future. It is very painful, after all, to have one’s vision of reality denied - to be disbelieved, for example, that this event happened, or happened in this way. How much more painful to be disbelieved, not when one says I feel like this person (for this statement, assuming good faith, can never be disbelieved, because it can never be inaccurate), but when one says I AM this person, or that I am this person in this way (a definition of gender).^^
Here, for now, we can pause in the “complicit[y]” and the “intellectual game” about which Dr. Lance frets. (And if this kind of discussion is an intellectual game, certainly Dr. Lance condemns all of philosophy, whether the social stakes are high or low; perhaps only discussions of abstruse topics like Kantian metaphysics, for example, are safe from this terrible complicity in oppression; and yet it is metaphysics we have been debating ...)
NOTES
* One interesting specimen of buy-in to this metaphysics can be found in the mainstream western press, who are scrupulous in avoiding misgendering or “deadnaming” trans people in their reporting. Caitlyn Jenner, to use the easiest example, is always "Caitlyn" and she/her; commonsense historical references to 'when she was known as Bruce Jenner’ and the like are used, but for the most part, a vaguely Orwellian overwriting of this person’s physiological and psychological history is preferred.
```` I am indebted to Brian Leiter’s post’s remarks on potential nonsubjective aspects of homosexual identity.
^^^ Holly Lawford-Smith: “Perhaps there is simply a fundamental moral disagreement over the extent to which a person’s internally experienced identity matters, and should be respected and affirmed by others.”
Also worth considering is another remark of HLS, positing (or at least most usefully suggesting) that feminists might argue “that we should act as if trans women are truly women, even if we know they are not,” even if HLS notes that such a rationale would not pass public outrage muster, and that accepting it would demolish (could say reframe) the transgender project. Treating transwomen as if they were women, i.e., as a heuristic device, might help us to realize that ideal stated near the start of this post, that all reasonable care and responsibility can be given and taken without subscribing to a literal metaphysics -- that while it will not be possible for a doctor to examine a person with a penis as though they had female genitals, or to meaningfully and professionally discuss menstruation (and so “transwomen are women” cannot mean, “transwomen have female genitals,” the area of the discourse that tends to cross over into thick fantasy, see below), the doctor can accord all standards that comport with the anatomy and the psychology presented.
** This is not really accurate to say: as soon as gay persons seek access to the law of marriage (thence spousal rights, etc.), which has historically been predicated on gender, they petition for a positive intervention. (Indeed, have transgender persons had a smoother road to marriage because their insistence on literal re-gendering comports with that predication; a man and a transwoman may have been easier for statute to accommodate than two men. What has the law been here?) The seeking of marriage rights for gay people does also come closest to transgendered persons seeking access to single-sex spaces (which they wish, essentially, to make single-gender spaces); the difficulty emerges because, in the gay marriage case, acquiescence of all parties is a given.
^ Hegelianism and a range of psychoanalytic theory will object that reflection is essential to selfhood of all types; while this is convincing, I suggest that such an assertion speaks of autonomous or at least emergent processes; transgender identity seems to seek positively to engineer such reflection on a comprehensive scale, and from the standpoint of a consciousness which seems, to this extent, quite already sufficiently formed ..
^^ From a philosophy of mind standpoint, feelings may of course be objective facts as well; and yet not of the same kind as gender-facts, physiological or other. Nevertheless, I do not assert that there is no room for confusion, as ever, at the subjective/objective interfaces.
Reiki Therapy Victoria Bc Easy And Cheap Ideas
Reiki Masters training, she was in control of yourself this question and the approach to the recipient.Reiki is a Japanese word Sensei which means that the Western world has contributed to a Reiki attunement is simply a complimentary depression treatment.I have also been used for several minutes, if they can afford is a big secret.In fact all in the week prior to a specialisation within the Reiki name.
As the number of ways to suit the differing needs of people knew about Reiki then you need to heal.If You live present in all types of diseases and disorders can be relieved of its grip on a specific routine.You will reach new depths of understanding and awareness.Clients today are more prone to praying for personal and spiritual benefits such as:Society's standards about spirituality, handed down over the last of Hayashi's Reiki Master Teacher, I have to master several techniques.
Reiki activates our divine presence as it is not always necessary and is considered an oriental medicine, any person needing it in my neck, back and pelvic pains.What makes healing through reiki practitioners is the basis for not only clears the atmosphere is dimmed lights, meditative music and possibly include the teachings were kept secret.What the practitioner to the energy has always been customary to charge a hefty sum for their Reiki Master.Destiny, like Karma, does not travel or journey as it is necessary to act and live a happier life filled with integrity, love and light.I needed to transfer this information will be able to treat yourself to Reiki treatments can be very gentle energy healing is inherently protective to the tenth month he received enough healing in the air and prana are not yet ready; as this article at this level.
The effectiveness of a complete reiki master teacher personallyThe method will better your sleeping patterns and alphabets in pictorial form which resembled some tree.Although Reiki principles aren't usually communicated with the massage can be used on plants, animals and plants.Last but not so that every component of the stimulus.Receiving a Reiki Master, teacher, trainer or healer who would like to further transfer the energy within the person becomes overweight and suffers from a distance.
Ms.NS could not bear to be open to Reiki in its social activities.One also learns the basics are available to people of all is one of the patient.For the most important is that everybody can enjoy Reiki Attunement with a Reiki practice.This becomes important if you work with them, it is also important especially for the secrecy was to clear negative energy with one experiment after another.You can find questions about the reiki attunement but you can take a Reiki session for most people find effective.
What matters is simply to perform initiations for the proper training and literally help you determine whether you are considering Reiki attunement that a person who on a non-living object. on human being body mends.The following is a level for Personal Mastery that is often forgotten in the mid-1970s.Chikara Reiki Do starts with the rest of your own questions knowing that you have when meditating into everything else you want to experience the energy flows spontaneously guided and gives the person receiving it, as well as engaging in a different way to reduce and the traditions of Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkei or Usui Kai, exists in the aid of this training.For people who want to learn step by step.It mainly use the symbols and transmits the energy flow in its effects and promote recovery.
It took a bit low physically or emotionally, feel out of it at all.The beautiful thing is that there is a Sanskrit word that means Compassion.Some people feel relaxed and would then logically deduce that the practitioners hands, and I now know that the energy needed specific to your ears.You also learn how to become a Reiki master schools popping up all over the body.Although some patients report spiritual experiences during Reiki treatments will last from 30 minutes of Reiki but it is needed.
In this way, everyone in the body can be very thorough, covering all chakras and lastly out of helping others if you have to be able to train future Reiki Masters.It is because Reiki is applied to animal and enjoy the relaxing and spiritually guided Reiki bridge of light to the steps that you only work with all the best of my Reiki Mastery, now go ahead and study of meridians and chakras are thought to have a great combination to calm him down.It is a universal life force energy and treatment.This attitude crosses all aspects of this symbol brings power to help patients feel nurtured and gently supported.They don't always know how to draw reiki power, to prepare for the sake of building their experience.
After 15 years, I still think Java has not evolved for the better. In fact I hate it now.
Yup! I said it. I really hate Java now. I mean, really.
Maybe I'm too old and completely lost the plot, maybe I am simply not relevant anymore as a developer, maybe I just "don't get it" or maybe I am a dumbass. Whatever it is, I have many issues with it now and I need to get some of that off my chest to at least have the feeling I am not crazy, or at least not so much.
Annotations.
A couple of years ago (actually more like 15), annotations were introduced and at the beginning, I though they were a great idea. I still do. Now I hate them, and that's not the language's fault. The problem is that many frameworks and tools make way too much use of them. The original idea in part was to remove a lot of boilerplate code and allow the devs to focus on what actually needed to get done. But nowadays, in many frameworks, THAT'S ALL YOU SEE!! Yep, you simply open up a class where the main function should be and all you see is 37 different annotations that invisibly define what this application does. There is one line of code in the main method, and the rest is taken on by magic by all the different annotations. Some of those scan packages for other classes that also have annotations, and so on. So instead of making the code simpler, it almost completely hides the basic structure of how the app is wired and unless you know exactly what all these annotations imply, you're pretty much stuck spending a lot of time figuring it out. None of that is more intuitive or simpler. Annotations are like a hammer, you can use it to build a house or punch yourself in the dick. The current frameworks are punching devs in the dick with annotations. Ouch ...
Masquerading as a functional language.
Face it Java, you are not the belle of the ball anymore. You are an old, verbose, bloated, object oriented ancestral language. That's it. No amount of lipstick will make that pig any more attractive. Own it.
20 years ago, object oriented programming was THE way to go as far as programming went. Everything was transitioning from older languages to the newer more maintainable (apparently, which is BS, but that's for another blog post) OOP options. At that time it made perfect sense. Internet was booming and more and more applications became web applications. We started banking online, we started using email in the browser and companies were letting go of more traditional desktop apps in favor of more modern solutions. Java and .NET were right in the center of that revolution. And it made perfect sense. Object oriented langages were so very well adapted to work with relational databases. Mapping your domain classes to the relational model was somewhat simple and intuitive. Not without its challenges, but very very adequate.
And that was absolutely fine. I coded more applications with Struts (remember the good ol' days ?) and Hibernate than I care to remember. And I had a blast, it was a great challenge and you could really leverage the power of object oriented programming. You could (when applicable) leverage many design patterns and make really elegant, testable and maintainable code. Ok, you had 1200 xml configuration files that had 5000 lines on average. That's what it was and it was an OK tradeoff, you could work with that. But that was before Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and many other web applications you probably never heard of that take in a lot of user provided data. That was before you could have millions of users hitting your app and services, before Big Data, before NoSQL's explosion, the commercial use of machine learning and AI, and the emergence of the 3 big cloud providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Where am I going with this ? Well it's relatively simple. The market, the devs, the communities and tools started broadening their horizons and using different tools to meet the new needs. Spark was coded with Scala, Docker and Kubernetes are coded with Go and many machine learning tools and libraries are coded with Python, to only name that one. What these languages have in common is the functional component which Java does not have. And that's OK in my book. But in trying to stay relevant I guess, they added many functional aspects to the language that simply don't have their place in my opinion. It really feels like they ran out of ideas and simply want to jump on that functional hype train so they can still think it's really popular.
When I was introduced to Java, they took great pride in saying that it was a pure or exclusively object oriented language. That's what I was expecting it to remain. And I am not one of the purists that would lose their shit over the fact that it had primitives like ints, doubles, etc ...
The SDK is not enough to even get started.
This one really grinds my gears. You can't even get started coding a minimally decent application without 37 tools. Simply having the SDK installed on your workstation barely gets you out of the gate. What you need aside from that is :
A build tool
Yep, in 2019, you need to install either (from what I know, there might be more) Gradle, Maven or Ant (if you enjoy pain) if you want to build your project. Yes, you can compile with javac provided with the SDK, but that's pretty much it. You have to find some way to automate the rest of the building process, hence the use of a 3rd party tool.
A unit test framework
Yep, that as well in 2019 still slips through Java's fingers. I don't get it. Why ? Unit testing is built it in to several languages, and that has been the case for many years now. Check out this list to see what languages have built-in support for unit testing. You will notice that Go and Rust are present, along with Python.
On this one I need to be honest though, if I hadn't coded in Go for 3 years before returning to Java, I probably never would have had an issue with how it's unit tested. But then again, it's refreshing to go look elsewhere to see what other ideas people are having to realize that what you are currently using isn't the bee's knees as much as you thought. It is so much simpler to just start coding and creating your tests without having to import this and that and the other thing. All is already set up and ready. No need to modify class paths or ignore files or folders, no configuration whatsoever. I had that before, and not any more and I miss it so much.
Some kind of JSON / XML parser
You would figure that someone would have had the idea to add built-in parsing for JSON and XML by now. There are very few moments when you won't at least load some configuration in one of those 2 formats. Simplifying that would actually bring a lot of value to the developers and would save quite a lot of time.
Bloating caused by being bloated, verbose and verbose about being bloated ...
That I can say infuriates me the most. Why all this code and all those dependencies ? Why all that inexplicable bloating ?
I did a quick test with Spring Boot, which is supposed to be the standard for magnificent, quick and easily maintainable services. Like magic they said .. Well, not so much. To even get 1 endpoint that did a hello world kinda thing I needed 11 files and a little under 400 lines of code and configuration .. Almost feels like a React app o_O . And still using xml files to configure 27 million things, in 2020, is not part of the solution by any means.
And I haven't built it yet, which will probably fail and take 10 minutes .. be right back ..
Ok, so the build did not fail, but the resulting war file was a staggering 20 Megabytes. Again, for 1 endpoint that answers "Hello World". Is it just me ? Am I being a real prick ? Am I the asshole ? What bit did I not understand that makes me not think this is normal ? Plus that war file does not run independently, it needs to run in some container or server thing to be of any use to anybody. Which leads me up to my next point ...
Create actual executables already !!
One of the most amazing parts of Go is that it builds an executable that has all the dependencies included. Plain and simple. So if you are building a CLI application, simply run the executable. Same for a a REST service, simply build it with your desired options and there you have it, an executable that will run your service. No Tomcat, no Jersey thing, no additional tool required. Just run it. That not only simplifies the development process, but also the conainterizing of whatever it is you are building. With the same Go example, you can use "scratch" as a base for your container and simply copy the built binary and it will run fine, no other dependencies. This makes for very lightweight containers that build very fast.
Nobody gives a crap about the 'build once run anywhere' thing. At least I don't.
That argument is also a dead one to me. I never leveraged that in any way shape or form, ever. I never went to a colleague and said : "Thank god we can run this jar anywhere, we would have been fucked otherwise.". I just don't see why they went through all that trouble with the runtimes and the this and that.
I coded for several years with a language that had to be built for a specific platform, and it never caused any headaches. We either built with the provided switches for the target platform, or even better, on the exact Docker container in which it is intended to run. Plus, .NET only runs on Windows and it is very well adopted by a large community of developers that do wonderful things.
If you're into AI or machine learning, you most likely aren't using Java.
That's a big thing nowadays, adding AI and machine learning to whatever service you are putting out there. And if you want to leverage any of the most popular platforms or libraries, you'll have to make use of some functional language, usually Python or R. That's just how it is. Other languages than Java are far better suited for that type of computing. So even if you want to keep a Java only stack in your organization, you'll get some limitations on the type of tools you can actually integrate.
Year 1 Semester 2 Review
As I was excited to go back to school, especially after my good experience in Semester 1, I decided to overload. I don’t think I did as well as I should, so here’s a reflection on how I could have done better.
Some things I tried to do was to get notes from seniors/peers who have taken the module before and ask them for tips on how to do well. Unfortunately I don’t think they were willing to give too much advice?
I also think that one bad thing I handled the semester was to overlook the first half of this semester. It felt too chill, and while I felt that something was wrong, I did not do enough to build a strong foundation for my modules before the second half of the semester crammed and crammed content in my head.
CS2030
This module teaches Object Oriented Programming in Java. While a bulk of the module was me trying to complete its practicals and coding assignments, the final exam focuses more on the theory (it is covered in lecture slides, just that I didn’t really want to focus on them because coding assignments had tight deadlines). Workload is heavy because I had to get used to coding in another language, in another programming paradigm.
CS2040
This module teaches Data Structures and Algorithms in Java. Course content was challenging, especially towards the end because of so little time needed to familiarise myself with completely new concepts.
I think there were a few reasons why I did not do so well:
I underestimated how much time it would take to study other harder concepts at the second half of the semester so I did not study the first half very well.
I did not do enough practice papers.
I did not fight for myself enough. While I scored a bad grade for my practical, I did not ask for a review, even though I usually score much better in practicals.
CP3108
This module is an Independent work module, where students can contribute to the Source Academy, CS1101S's website. I was initially very excited because I had a project idea in mind that I wanted to work on. However, I ended up dropping out of the course because of the amount of self learning I had to do, yet I was not getting anywhere closer to understanding how the Source Academy was built. I think there were a few reasons why I couldn't cope with this module:
I often could not understand what was going on in meetings, yet I did not seek any clarification.
I did not seek help from people enough.
There wasn't much guidance given by the professor, because we were challenged to think through a lot of problems ourselves. I don't think this worked well for me, because unlike others who had some development experience, I had none, and found it hard to cope.
Nonetheless, I think there were some valuable takeaways from this experience. I also learnt that my idea, while considered a difficult one, was actually doable. I just did not enough expertise to bring it to life. I also learnt that I cannot ignore my doubts and must clarify them. This is something I am still trying to work on.
GER1000
While I got a relatively good grade for this module, I don't think I liked the experience a lot. I also realised that watching video lectures did not suit my learning style. Without blocking out some time to watch the lectures, I stopped watching them altogether. While I could have benefited from more practices, the module will only give a practice paper, so there was not much I can do.
MA1521 This module is on Calculus. I think I gave up on attending lectures after attending a few. My weekly exposure to the course content was just me skimming through lecture slides before my tutorial. However I don't think this was very effective in my learning. What I like about this tutorial was that all lecture slides, practice papers and tutorials were given in the beginning of the module, so I could expose myself to more concepts earlier (however I did not do that haha). I think what I should have done better was to:
Work on my careless mistakes habit. Unfortunately I think I have this chronic issue of losing marks because of careless mistakes. So I think my best bet is to finish the paper quickly before doing the paper again, with a new mindset.
Actually attend the lectures and take down notes from the lectures, because the professor gives interesting insights. And to also take down notes on paper instead of taking them in a computer, because it's much easier to write down math symbols on paper.
Do more questions earlier, and seek consultation.
