hey ! who's your fav character of soa and why? (other than jax)
Hi! It’s cool to get an SOA ask.
There’s a lot of great characters on the show, particularly in SAMCRO. I love Tig, and Chibs. Opie is a great tragic figure. Bobby is maybe the most relatable and likable of all of them. Juice has his moments.
But in the end, I like moral complexity, and (aside from Jax, the Hamlet of it all) I think the best characters on the show are actually the women. Clay is a great villain that you love to hate. I’ve always been a fan of Ron Perlman’s, but his time alive on the show kind of exceeded what it should’ve. It would’ve been more interesting to see him die sooner, such as after the revelation that he’d tried to have Tara killed. But Gemma (more Lady McBeth than Gertrude, imo) is the greatest villain of them all. I started out loving her for being such an unconventional leading lady, badass and virtually unshakeable, played pretty incredibly by Katey Sagal. She’s unique in the TV landscape to this day. By the end of the series (and I had a lot of problems with the final season of the show, and many with season 6, as well), I loathed Gemma and couldn’t wait to see her get what was coming to her. That was honestly what kept me watching, because the show devolved into a near-parody of itself by then. But I needed to see Gemma die, and I knew that Jax would be the one to kill her. It was a great death. Both extremely sad and extremely satisfying.
I also love Tara. It’s interesting to see a good person make all these compromises to be with the person they love, knowing deep down that it’s never going to have a happy ending. Jax sees her as this savior that’s going to make him a good person, and turn his life into something better than he deserves, but it doesn’t work like that, and it’s really shitty to try to put that all on someone else. Despite feeling that Tara is there to save him (he literally says that at the beginning of season 4), he continues to do what he wants at every turn, never really putting his family first, and there’s so many moments when Tara almost gets out, but we can all see her tragic destiny coming. Because Jax won’t let her go, and she also can’t give him up. It’s the extreme version of choosing to be with the bad boy, even though you’re extremely smart in all other aspects of your life. It’s s stupid choice, and you should be better than that, but you aren’t! Tara was the character we could relate to as regular people rooting for a gang of bad guys. Her death was the saddest moment on the show (Charlie Hunnam acted the hell out of that kitchen floor scene), along with what happened with Opie in prison, as the guys looked on in horror. (Honorable mention to Tig having to watch Dawn being burned alive).
FUCK, THIS SHOW IS HORRIFIC! Lol. Being on season 4, it hasn’t yet reached the dark years.
Is this a long enough answer for you? ;))
