i think the poughkeepsie tapes is one of the biggest missed opportunities in horror. the idea of creating a faux true crime documentary to document a serial killer’s actions, especially given the glut of true crime docs that streaming has produced, is so so so good and the film actually manages to nail the verisimilitude in some cases. but the rest is just so fucking half baked. the serial killer is the smartest, most brilliant criminal on earth who has no character other than being smart and evil. the crimes documented just feel like a list of shocking atrocities that someone came up with in a violence dick measuring contest. some of the content is cool and the masked kill sequence is great but if there was ever a great idea ruined by a single minded obsession with producing edgy shock set pieces…….
#syd squeaks#i also just think faux documentaries should be made for every genre all the time always#they’re one of my favorite formats a film can have and the obvious step of evolution from ‘found footage’ as a broader genre#anyway. poughkeepsie tapes be like ‘what if the serial killer had an iq of 40000 and never got caught 🧐’

Main Three + Craig with morbid/odd reader
“I want love to change my friends to enemies and tell me how it’s all my fault.”
Stan:
He lets you draw on him but instead of doodling you take a black marker and start to meticulously draw dotted lines and arrows like you’re a surgeon prepping him for cosmetic surgery.
While helping him with farm chores you go into detail about how you can compost and break down a corpse in soil, he just kinda nods along.
You give him tarot readings every week. He thought they were fake and just did it to entertain you until his week played out exactly like you said it would. When he realized he just froze up and went non verbal.
Stan- “Hey, do you have any spells to curse my dad?”
Met him when he was in his goth era.
The two of you were having a moment in the rain when you told him that he should’ve worn shoes with rubber soles in case he gets struck by lightning.
You started writing his eulogy when you were laying in bed together, bro was trying not to freak out. Just spam texted Kyle.
You’re date idea is taking him to an abandoned house.
You guys bonded over music. Now you help him write songs since you’re so used to writing poetry.
Reader- “You’re into music?”
Stan- “Yeah, I guess so.”
Reader- “Have you heard Carnival of the Animals, R. 125: Aquarium composed by Camille Saint-Saëns and performed by Philippe Entremont, Gaby Casadesus, and Yo-Yo Ma?”
Stan- “Can’t say I have.”
Kyle:
Has veiny arms so when the two of you are just chilling you’ll put your finger on one of the veins and start talking about what would happen if you severed it. He’s lowkey interested from a scientific standpoint.
You’ll straddle his hips and pull his lips back to look at his teeth, poking around in his mouth like a dentist. You’re inches apart.
Reader- “Wow, you have beautiful teeth.”
Kyle- “Thank you?”
He’s kinda fascinated by you but also repulsed by some of the things you do/say.
He came to your house and you were butchering your own meat, left right away.
You listen to The Cure together.
When you climb trees to look for birds and squirrels he’ll climb too to help you.
Will get mad annoyed after listening to you say incredibly out of pocket things while he’s trying to focus on something.
He’ll buy you little knickknacks that remind him of you.
Before he got to know you, he talked mad shit.
Sometimes gets super freaked out by your behaviour, you straight up give him the heebie-jeebies.
Reader- “So this is my collection of human teeth.”
Kyle- “All of those are yours, right?”
Reader- “Actually, none of them are mine.” 😁
Kyle- 😨
Kenny:
Sits through horror movies and weird foreign films with you. He didn’t like it at first but he came around and started sourcing out movies he’d think you like.
You took him to a Wicca ceremony and he had the time of his life.
You taught him how to make flower crowns and now he makes them all the time. He likes to give them to Karen.
When he sees something off-putting or creepy he will immediately take a picture and send it to you.
Reader- “Hey, it’s raining. Do you want to go look for earth worms and build a worm colosseum?”
Kenny- “Hell yeah.”
He likes to go for walks in the forest with you, you guys will look for bugs and pick them up or make them houses of leaves and twigs.
He’ll help you wash the skulls/bones you find.
Never really minded that you were weird, he approached you first because he thought you were hot.
He loves when you play with his hair and tie little braids into it.
You guys tried to recreate The Blair Witch Project but failed miserably when you actually got lost in the woods.
You’ll meet up at the graveyard and just sit in the grass while you talk about ghosts and ghouls. Sometimes you’ll walk around and stop at a specific grave and guess how they died.
Reader- “Would you rather be in Cannibal Holocaust or The Poughkeepsie Tapes?”
Kenny- “Erm, I gotta pick The Poughkeepsie Tapes.”
Craig:
Generally goes along with whatever you want to do.
Reader- “Can we go down to the riverbank to pickup fish heads and then eat out their eyes?”
Craig- “Yeah, sure.”
He’ll just watch you roll around in the mud or set little twig piles on fire, he won’t join in but he also won’t interfere.
You’ll talk to Stripe, not in the baby voice that people usually use to talk to animals but your tone will be dead serious like you’re talking to a grown adult.
The two of you will watch true crime documentaries together.
He’ll fuck up anyone who calls you weird or a freak.
When you’re out in public, you’ll point someone out and predict how they’re going to die.
There’s nothing you can do that’ll shock him, he’s unfazed by everything that you say.
Sometimes gets concerned with you around Stripe.
You’ll disappear for hours at a time and he’ll get worried, sending you a million texts then you’ll randomly show up at his door soaking wet or covered in dirt with no warning.
Craig- “Where have you been? You weren’t answering my texts.”
Reader- “I was meeting with a friend of mine who is alive.”
Craig- “Oh, that’s cool.”
Requests are open! I’m working through a couple right now. Thanks to the anon who requested this.

What is the line between found footage and mockumentary?
So mockumentary is kind of a split off from found footage. So you’ve got your three types of found footage:
Traditional found footage. First person, shakey cam, all recorded footage. Blair Witch, Cannibal Holocaust, Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield, As Above So Below.
Mockumentary. Fake documentary or news footage, etc. Ghostwatch, Lake Mungo, Poughkeepsie Tapes, WNUF Halloween Special, Late Night With the Devil.
Screen life. Recordings of a computer screen. Host, Unfriended, The Den, Searching, Missing

since you lovely people gave me horror movie recommendations, ill give some of my own!!
Autopsy of Jane Doe (a recent favorite, suspenseful and has supernatural elements but a lot of the scary stuff is done through implication)
Videodrome (for the freaks out there)
The Fly (im a sucker for anything by David Cronenberg)
Phantom of the Paradise (my favorite horror musical, the music and costume design are amazing)
Ginger Snaps (really compelling story about 2 sisters, once inseparable, growing apart. also werewolves)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (really spooky, its a classic)
Frankenhooker (batshit. absolute nonsense. its so fun)
Re-animator (Re-animator)
Altered States (local man takes so many drugs in a sensory deprivation tank that he devolves into a caveman)
Terrifier and Terrifier 2 (not so much a narrative film as it is a showing of the sickest and nastiest practical effects)
Vampire Clay (BONKERS)
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (real good fun with awesome practical effects)
Audition (Takashi Miike is a fucking menace, great film)
The Lost Boys (punk vampires in the 80s, what else do i have to say)
House of 1000 Corpses (i love you Rob Zombie)
The Love Witch (gorgeous, looks right out of the 60s but with a modern twist)
Suspiria (the original and the remake are great but are basically 2 completely different movies)
Teeth (its teeth)
Vamp (Grace Jones is a cool vampire lady)
The Stuff (BONKERS FUCKING YONKERS)
Mandy (Nic Cage goes crazy with it)
Perfect Blue (rest in peace Satoshi Kon you were a genius)

He's lucky we love him unconditionally 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤣🤣😂 In all seriousness, I think some viewers are too quickly dismissing the show as repetitive and not deep enough. I mean, I could watch Mark do this on a 24 hr basis with very little variation, 😂 but even so, there are many layers going on with this last bit at the end of ep 3 (my favorite of 1-3 and the least liked by most viewers). There's a wildly insane, narcissistic, cruel and sadistic, yet weirdly earnest and almost innocent aspect of the killer's humor that I just love. Plus, and this is maybe the secret ingredient if you pay close attention: at his core, he's so fucking hurt (earnest) and bitter/resentful/vengeful (asshole) about being rejected by people he tries to befriend. So, he has turned the cycle of rejection into one he actively controls from start to finish. On the other hand, he can appear flatly emotionless and sociopathic in certain moments. But I'm not sure that's at the root of his evil or his personality. The point is, we may never fully know. He's not just a 1-2 repetition of "the quirky weirdo" turns into the "evil psycho," he's never ever just one or the other. "Josef," real name who-the-fuck-knows, is all of it, and he's addressing his delighted entertainment at his own killing at us. Who else is he bragging to? Obviously, himself as he watches the tapes again to relive his supposed glory/accomplishments, etc. But the tapes are also a documentation of his "work" which is his legacy. In a way, it's a much less over-the-top rendition of the themes seen in The Poughkeepsie Tapes (which I also like) and even Barbarian (a great movie). The twisted documentarian. He makes us complicit in a sense, but is understanding what he really wants? I think he'd want us to be impressed. He wants us to know he's not that nervous, babbling dork that he actually is, he's the big bad nightmare. What is fascinating to me about "Josef" / the killer is how he's simultaneously sincere and deceptive, despicable and yet relatable in his loneliness and awkwardness, hilarious and terrifying.

u have like .. really good taste in media , so do u have any movie recommendations ?
my top favorites right now (in order)
1. I Saw The TV Glow (heartwrenching "coming-of-age"/psychological horror/wait.. he's "coming-of-age" so quickly--? Time wasn't right. It was moving too fast. I was 19, then I was 20, then I was 21. Like chapters skipped over on a DVD. I told myself, this isn't normal. This isn't normal. This isn't how life is supposed to feel. I thought about r-- really good movie if you haven't seen it already)
2. Possessor (trippy, violent sci-fi psychological horror. i wrote a song about this one. ive seen it around 5 times now and not a day goes by where i don't think of it.)
3. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (50% satirical mockumentary commentating on how america glorifies its serial killers, 50% found-footage horror, you'll need to look up warnings for this one [or just ask me, ive seen it 4 times, i can give you in-depth CW's without spoilers].)
4. Horse Girl (a girl's spiraling descent into conspiracy. trippy, mystery thriller)
other favorites in no specific order
• Antiviral (another Brandon Cronenberg film, sci-fi thriller, taking parasocial relationships to a whole new level)
• The PowerPuff Girls Movie (underrated and one of my favorite PPG-related things ever next to the now-banned rock opera episode, See Me Feel Me Gnomey)
• Longlegs (paranormal mystery horror film, an FBI agent gets more than she bargained for when delving into a new case. ASK ME ABOUT OZ PERKINS AND NICHOLAS CAGE'S PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THIS FILM AND HOW IT SAVED THE FILM ITSELF FOR ME AND MADE IT GO FROM "A WEE BIT DISAPPOINTING BUT STILL GOOD" TO "TOP FAVORITE" BECAUSE OF HOW IT IMPACTED THE WAY I VIEW IT... IF YOU DARE..)
• Catsoup (silent japanese cartoon, short film, you can find it on youtube! two cats go on a magical, somewhat dark, adventure. visually stunning)
• The Brave Little Toaster (the only disney film that will ever grace my favorites list. incredible. the anthropomorphization of objects is stellar, the characters i could go on and on about-- and the songs are fucking great. shoutout to mass car suicide [Worthless]. also this movie inspired one of my OC stories [Curtain Call].)
• I'm Thinking Of Ending Things (adaptation of my favorite book, very different from the book but i think it brings some excellent things to the table and tells it in a very cool way. psychological thriller, mystery. Jesse Plemons is in it, they grabbed him off the set of Breaking Bad and forgot to tell him he wasn't still playing Todd. [< compliment])
• Baby Driver (anyone who hates this movie doesn't know how to have fun. action-comedy, incredible soundtrack that is SYNCED TO THE HAPPENINGS IN THE FILM, main character is an autistic CODA who i love very much, i have a deep personal connection with this movie because of the person i watched it with and the impact it had on us.)
• I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore (action-comedy, crime, awkward girl and her awkward neighbor [who just met her but would kill and die for her] get in over their heads trying to retrieve a stolen laptop.)
• Poltergeist (1982, my ma's favorite horror film and one of mine too. paranormal, visually stunning, the practical effects are so fucking cool. also im decently sure it was inspired by Little Girl Lost, an episode of The Twilight Zone, because it's like a more fleshed-out version of that concept.)
• Home Movie (2008, it's on youtube, i can't remember if it's like overall good but it's the only instance thus far in which i think the "evil child" trope is done well so it makes my favorites list)
• Whiplash (ARE YOU RUSHING OR ARE YOU DRAGGING?!)
• Nightcrawler (crime thriller, guy's spiraling descent into abandoning all morals for the sake of his obsessive new project, and the gripping horrific ways that this choice affects those around him)
• Dread (2009, violent horror, guy's spiraling descent into abandoning all morals for the sake of his obsessive new project, and the gripping horrific ways that this choice affects those around him)
• Raggedy Ann And Andy : A Musical Adventure (on youtube, an animated childhood favorite that still holds up. shoutout to the blue camel)
aaaand some others im prooobably forgettinggg..? tried to include a bit of as many genres i could think of, since most of my favorites are horror :)

Hello again! This isn't really an ask for headcanons or something but I'd like your opinion on something:)
I've been thinking that Habit from emh would like those old black and white horror movies, I don't know why, but it just came into my mind a few seconds ago. And I wanna see if you agree or not. I love yooouu!
Hellooo!! I actually have lots of opinions on this.
I don’t think habit would enjoy older horror films (nothing wrong with your headcanon of it though!) I feel like he would be too critical of the gore and horror aspects, claiming he “can do it better”.
I think he’d be interested in found footage types of horror movies or even snuff films since he films it himself. Movies like As Above So Below, Blair Witch Project and even The Poughkeepsie Tapes are perfect.
Psychological horror is another thing I see him enjoying, like Vivarium (do you get why) , Silence Of The Lambs, Jacob’s Ladder and The House That Jack Built.

I love this local opera company that do thee most avant garde adaptations of the OG libretto.
Like … do you want some noh theater in Orphee and Eurydice? Do you want a retelling of Alcestis that has Handel and Euripides and Ted Hughes all thrown together in a get along shirt feat. the most charismatic Hercules you’ll ever see? Do you want the Odyssey via the Vietnam war and there are erinyes with heads made out of balloons and they’re crawling around on the ground like the killer in the Poughkeepsie tapes and the Olympian gods have eight limbs and writhe around on the floor in a way that seems to be detached from gravity and also ocean Vuong’s poetry is here too?
Because BOY does this company have you covered lol
