It’s Been A Long Time - Nightwing x Reader

Requested by Anon -  Nightwing's old flame returns without warning after a long, unexplained absence from the team. She wishes to make amends start anew, but the old wounds make him hesitant.

“Okay, team. We have reports Parasite has been seen around Star City,” Dick stated, bringing up a security cam footage of Parasite breaking into a Queen Industries building. “He has been stealing tech from Queen Industries and it’s our mission to find out what he is doing.” 

“Shouldn’t Green Arrow be taking care of this?” Conner asked. The rest of the team mumbled in agreement. 

“Green Arrow is out of the area, and wants us to handle it,” Dick said sternly. “We’ll have two teams...” He stopped when the zeta tube activated suddenly.

“B-051,” the computer said as a figure appeared from the zeta tube. A rock formed in Dick’s throat when he recognized who it was. 

“(Y/N)!” M’gann gasped, flying over to hug you. You laughed, hugging her back. The rest of the team came over to either hug you or get introduced to you. Dick frowned, pouting slightly that you had completely interrupted the meeting. He bit his lip when he noted how good you looked, and he hated that he had noticed.

You glanced over M’gann to see Dick attempting not to look at you. Your stomach twisted at the sight. Guilt eating at your heart. You had to admit he was still so sexy, even though it killed you to notice.

“Are you coming on the mission with us? I’ve heard so much about you,” Cassie said, fangirling a little bit. 

“I would enjoy seeing if your rep holds up,” Lagoon Boy challenged you. You gave him a tight smile, making eye contact with Dick.

“I’d be happy to join you for the mission if you’ll have me? I was just coming back to ask if I could rejoin the team.” You bit your lip. “If you’ll have me, Nightwing?” 

Dick opened his mouth to speak, but M’gann answered for him. “Of course, you can join us. You never really left in the first place.” She gave you another hug before turning to Dick, sensing he might have had a different answer. “Right, Nightwing?”

You shivered at how cold Dick’s gaze was. “Sure, whatever,” he mumbled, turning back to the computer. His voice took a biting tone. “Can we finish the mission briefing please?” 

Weeks passed and you find yourself blending in with the team as if you never left. Well, there was one exception. Dick ignored you. It hurt more than you could ever say, but you knew you deserved this treatment.

M’gann took your hand, leading you to stand by her as Dick went back to giving the briefing. You shifted awkwardly. Dick did his best not to look at you.

Tension came to a head as it always did during the team’s weekly training session. Dick was testing everyone, which meant he would have to fight you. You could tell he was dreading it as he picked everyone before you, making you last. 

“Woo, kick his ass, (Y/N),” Garfield cheered. The other cheered you on as well. Dick grimaced at the sound.

M’gann patted your shoulder. “You used to beat him every time. I can feel you’re nervous about this,” she whispered in your ear. You were struggling to find the will to go into the training ring.

You woke to bright lights and a numbness in your arm. The memory of what happened came back slowly when you saw the splint on your arm. It took your eyes a moment to focus on the figure beside your bed.

“Hurry up,” Dick ordered coldly, refusing to look at you. You gave M’gann a tight smile before stepping into the ring. Suddenly, Dick attacked you. He wasn’t pulling his hits, clearly allowing his anger to affect his fighting. You did your best to dodge and counter, but Dick knocked you down and twisted your arm to put you into a hold. Something snapped in your arm. A scream escaped your lips while Dick froze in panic. The pain was so intense, you blacked out.

“Dick?” you whispered, finally able to focus on him.

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me,” Dick stated harshly. He ripped off his mask. You were taken back by his brilliant blue eyes. His eyes flash in anger. “You took off and left without a word. You didn’t even say goodbye to me.” He got to his feet. You got the impression he had been planning his words carefully while you were out. “And I have to find out now that you have been sick.” 

You sighed deeply. “How did you find out?” A gasp of pain escaped your lips when you attempted to move your fingers. 

Dick flinched at your gasp, his resolve breaking slightly. “Don’t move your arm. It still needs to be set.” He was about to lay a hand on your shoulder, but he pulled away. “It’s in your medical records for the league. You know they like to keep things up to date.”

Your jaw dropped open. “I didn’t give permission for that to be put in there!” Your hand flew to your neck to touch the scar from your chemo port. You found yourself doing that ever since it had been put in. It was a reminder that this is all real.

“Are you kidding me?!” Dick exploded, throwing his hands up in the air. You flinched, eyeing him warily. “Don’t you realized we care about you?! Damn it, (Y/N)! What if you died, and we wouldn’t have even known?!” Dick knocked over a medical cart that sat in the corner. He froze as it clattered on the floor. “Sorry,” he panted, trying to calm himself down. 

“It’s okay,” you whispered, blinking back tears. You knew he had a temper, but you never been on this end of it before. A sigh escaped your lips. “I didn’t want you all to see me like that. So weak, throwing up. I looked like a ghost, Dick.” Dick ran a hand through his hair as he looked at you. A flash of pity crossed his face. “See. I didn’t want that,” you said, pointing at his expression. “I didn’t want your pity.” 

“Pity?” Dick collapsed onto the chair by the bed. He ran his hand over his face, letting out a sigh of frustration. “(Y/N), I was in love with you. It killed me when you left, and it’s killing me now to know you were sick. You needed me, and you wouldn’t let me be there for you.” 

You bit your lip. “I’m sorry, Dick.” You winced when you accidentally moved your broken arm. “But you got back at me. You broke my arm.” A humorless laugh escaped your lips.

Dick let out a halfhearted chuckle. “I guess. I wouldn’t have been so rough with you if I knew.” He leaned forward to rest his elbows onto his knees. “They should be coming in soon to cast your arm.” 

You nodded, pursing your lips. An awkward silence falls between you. “Can we start over?” you asked after a long time. You looked up into his blue eyes. Dick frowned, shifting in his chair.

“I don’t know.” He ran a hand through his hair. “You hurt me a lot, (Y/N).” You looked down at your broken arm, trying to hold back tears. Your heart was breaking all over again. “But I think we can at least try being friends again.” 

“I missed you a lot, Dick,” you said, tears running down your cheeks. Dick gave you a sad smile, grabbing a tissue to wipe away your tears. 

“I missed you too,” Dick whispered, kissing your cheek quickly before pulling back. Your heart skipped a beat like it did during first time he kissed you. It would take time to rebuilt trust, but you and Dick were back on the path to something wonderful.

After meeting Bakugou at the family house that day, Shiroi realises that Todoroki had changed. Previously, Todoroki had shamelessly tried to woo him despite his countless rejections. However, after that day, Todoroki seemed to completely vanish from his sight. It is only months after, when he is finally promoted to being a manager of a project team, that he finally meets Todoroki again.

 “Hello, Mr Todoroki, it has been a while,” Shiroi says, voice gentle and fresh.

 “You are?” Todoroki asks, his eyes narrowing as he assessed the youth before him. The youth has a strong resemblance to Bakugou and Todoroki feels like he should know him. But at the same time, he did not care for anyone else but Bakugou.

 Shiroi’s eyes widen in surprise at Todoroki’s response, unable to believe that the man that had been chasing him like a wolf for months has suddenly forgotten all about him. “Are you upset that I cannot accept your feelings? I’m sorry, Mr Todoroki. But I have already told you that I have a boyfriend.”

 “Ha.” Todoroki scoffs. “Are you the only one delusional here or is your whole team delusional. We want people who are actually competent working on this project. Not daydreamers.”

 Shiroi’s face flushes red in embarrassment, head lowering as he softly apologises. One of the men in his team tries to come up to Shiroi’s defence, only to be held back by his senior colleague who understands just how powerful Todoroki is. This project is important to the Bakugou corporation, so they cannot offend Todoroki. However, this does not mean that everyone in Shiroi’s team did not instantly dislike that man.

 “What a bastard! How can he treat you like this!” Shiroi’s subordinates comfort him after the meeting, scolding Todoroki behind his back.

 “It’s nothing. I probably just misunderstood…” Shiroi says, eyes filled with tears. “I mean… When I was still working downstairs, he would often come by and ask me out for lunch so… I thought…”

 “Hmph! Sour grapes. Just because he failed to chase you, he chooses to humiliate you instead. What a jerk!”

 “No… I’m sure that is not his intention…” Shiroi denies.

 “You don’t have to defend him! It’s because you’re so nice that you always get bullied, Shiroi! Look at that disgusting conman who took over your place in the Bakugou family for the past two decades! Give an inch and he’ll want a mile! You let him stay in the Bakugou family and all he does is try to pour dirty water on you!”

 “He’s just not accustomed to the change,” Shiroi reasons.

 In the end, both are not able to convince the other.

 During their next meeting, Shiroi brings lunch for Todoroki as an apology.

 “Mr Todoroki… I would like to apologise for the misunderstanding that I had. I made this for you as an apology… I heard that you have gastric problems because you don’t eat properly. That isn’t healthy. From now on, I can make you lunch every day to compensate you for the misunderstanding. I hope we can put that behind us and work together effectively on this project.” Shiroi says earnestly, delivering a bento to Todoroki with both hands.

 “I’ve accepted your apology. As for that thing, I don’t need it.” Todoroki says, indicating his contempt at Shiroi’s bento.

 “I’m sorry but aren’t you being too harsh?” The senior member of Shiroi’s team cannot help but speak up.

 “From now on, Takahashi, you will be in charge of this project. I will take my leave now.” Todoroki ignores Shiroi’s team, giving the authority to the most promising employee in his team before leaving.

 Shiroi’s hand quickly wipes across his eyes. With an apology, he rushes out after Todoroki.

 “Mr Todoroki, please wait,” Shiroi shouts as he runs behind Todoroki.

 Considering that he cannot embarrass the so-called heir to the Bakugou corporation in front of all their employees, Todoroki brings Shiroi to the coffee shop opposite the company for a talk.

 “What?” Todoroki asks just as they sit down.

 “Cough. Let’s have a proper talk, Mr Todoroki. I’ll order coffee. What would you like?” Shiroi asks politely.

 “Talk,” Todoroki orders with displeasure, not at all wanting to talk to this overly “gentle” and “sweet” creature. The youth in front of him made him uncomfortable, which made Todoroki not want to bother even putting up pretences. Even being this cold, the other can already trail after him like a shadow. He cannot imagine how annoying the other can get if he shows even a little bit of warmth. Besides, Todoroki’s position and power allowed him to be this wilful.

 Todoroki’s attitude obviously affects Shiroi whose eyes begin to fill with tears that do not fall. “Mr Todoroki. I understand that we may have had some misunderstandings, but I have already apologised and you have already accepted it. So shouldn’t we both act like professionals and not children, holding on to a grudge? I know that you have a lot of power and probably feel superior to everyone else, but I think I deserve some basic respect.”

 “I don’t think I’m superior to everyone,” Todoroki’s starts, his words making Shiroi perk up. “For one, my lover, Katsuki, and I are equals. As for you… I don’t think you deserve any of my respect.”

 The words seem to shock Shiroi who freezes. He only gets back to himself when Todoroki has already left.

 As much as Todoroki wishes that this is the last time he ever has to meet Shiroi, it is not. The Bakugou corporation has been rising in position and power these few years. Although working with them is not essential, it is greatly beneficial to Todoroki’s own corporation. Todoroki does not know if Shiroi said something, but the president of Bakugou Corporation, Shiroi’s father, requests that Todoroki attended their meetings. According to Shiroi’s father, he sent his own son to manage the team that they sent out to show his sincerity. Hence, he hopes that Todoroki can show his sincerity by attending as well. Todoroki could not quite understand the logic. After all, even though he is the heir, Shiroi is not the president. He does not quite meet the standard to have Todoroki, who is the president of his own corporation, to meet him personally. However, considering the benefits of the project and the fact that there was no other non-personal reason for not meeting Shiroi, Todoroki concedes.

 And as if he cannot let go of trying to use food to gain Todoroki’s respect, Shiroi begins bringing food enough for everyone during their occasional meetings. As the saying goes, presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise and stops his mouth that he cannot reprove. As a result, Shiroi easily gains the fondness of everyone on the project, even those from Todoroki’s corporation. All except Todoroki himself, of course.

 In order to keep to his promise of eating at 12 pm sharp whenever possible, Todoroki often called for a lunch break just before noon. He would then go off on his own to eat the bento that he prepared with Bakugou in the morning while the rest stayed in the meeting room to share the food Shiroi brought just so he will not be disturbed by other people.

 This day, however, is an exception. As Todoroki does not stop the presenter midway of his presentation, Todoroki runs a little late. Hence, instead of wasting time going out to find a place to eat, Todoroki brings out his bento in the meeting room.

 Other than Todoroki’s personal bodyguards, everyone else in the room appears surprised to see Todoroki take out a bento and eat with them for once. But before anyone can try to chat with him, they see Todoroki take out his phone to take a picture of his bento with a gentle smile on his face. This seems to shock everyone even further.

 Satisfied with the few photos he took, Todoroki begins to video call Bakugou who picks up before the second ring.

 “Five minutes late,” Bakugou’s voice wafts from the phone.

 “Sorry, kitten. Couldn’t stop the meeting midway.” Todoroki earnestly apologises.

 “That’s fine. Now eat.” Bakugou says, the video call showing Bakugou opening his own bento.

 After truly getting together, there were some changes to their routine. Now, Bakugou and Todoroki will use the food they prepared to design the bento for the other. In an effort to tease Todoroki back, Bakugou put a lot of effort into making Todoroki’s bento as sickeningly lovey-dovey as possible. This included cutting egg rolls into heart-shapes and writing cheesy messages with seaweed on the rice. Of course, this does not embarrass Todoroki at all, the man always taking multiple photos before eating just so that he can always look at them again. Instead, it is Bakugou who gets embarrassed when Todoroki sends these photos to Bakugou.

 “Wah. Did your girlfriend make this bento?” One of the more courageous and friendly members of the project team asks as she looks at Todoroki’s bento. “It smells really good!”

 “My fiancé did,” Todoroki replies proudly with a smirk.

 “What fiancé!” Bakugou shouts, cheeks pink. “When did I agree to marry you?”

 “From the beginning, kitten. You agreed when I asked to date with the aim of marriage.” Todoroki replies, grinning so brightly it blinded everyone else in the room.

 “Pfft. Lousy. No proposal, no engagement ring, and you want to marry me?” Bakugou says with mock disgust.

 “Don’t worry, kitten. I’ll make preparations.” Todoroki replies.

 “I’m not going to agree,” Bakugou says stubbornly.

 “We’ll see about that,” Todoroki replies mysteriously.

 As Todoroki and Bakugou flirt over the phone while eating lunch, Shiroi feels humiliated. It felt as if he had been slapped in the face, his face burning hot.

 “I always thought that Mr Todoroki is a bastard,” some of the female workers begin to gossip. “But now I think he’s so dreamy. Fierce and cold to everyone else but soft and sweet only to you!”

 Hearing this, Shiroi’s fist clenches. He did not understand. That special softness was his. Todoroki was his. How did someone with nothing but bad rep like Bakugou manage to steal Todoroki from him? This could not be true, Shiroi denied. Todoroki is only playing hard to get, trying to make him jealous so that he will accept his feelings. Comforting himself with that thought, Shiroi swears to steal Todoroki back.

I think the best dressed were numerous this year. There was hardly a wrong choice except for J Lo, Thomasin Mckenzie, Ryan Seacrest and Beyonce. I loved Joey King, Michelle Pfeifer, Kaitlin Deaver, Rose Leslie, Cate Blanchett, Ellen and Portia, Phoebe Waller- Bridge, Cynthia Erivo, Eddie Murphy and Paige Butcher, Brad and Leo, Zoe Kravitz, Helen Mirren, Annabelle Wallis, Lisa Lu, Bill Hader, Kerry Washington, Lisa Bonet, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, Patricia Arquette and Nicole Ansari-Cox.

The SAG award also had some very well dressed which included Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams, Lupita Nyongo, Zoey Kravitz, Millie Bobbie Brown the Schitts Creek cast and Patricia Arquette. Christina Applegate was a bit too old school but she rocked it. The people on the SAG carpet were very chatty.  Parasite was named best cast. Other winners included Zellweger, Joaquin, Sam Rockwell, The Crown, Laura Dern and Dinklage. I have not seen The Morning Show but I was a bit shocked to see Jennifer Aniston win over Jody Comer, Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Coleman or Elizabeth Moss. This was an award from her fellow actors so I suppose they wanted to send her some love. Her ex Brad Pitt won as well and went on and on about himself.

The Grammys were pretty somber with a lot of ballads and the sadness of the death of Kobe Bryant that day. Aerosmith refused to let drummer Joey Kramer play with them and many found the performance a mess. A wonderful moment was Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile with their song that went on to win best country song. Tanya Tucker won best country album. Other winners included Billir Eilish, Lizzo, Elvis Costello and the imposters, Gary Clark Jr., Nipsey Hussle and John Legend, Willie Nelson, Michelle Obama and Dave Chappelle. I had no love for the fashion of Ariana Grande or Rosalia. My best dressed were Lizzo, Camila Cabello, Elle Mai, Jameela Jamill, Billy Porter, Bebe Rexha and Alessandria Ambrosia.

I can’t believe that in those same flashbacks we learned what a horrible Mother’s Day they had.  How could so much go wrong in 1 day? ** Hooray, More Tony and Anna!! ** The heartbreak of John and Marlena and the evil of the brainwashed really harkens back to the heyday of Days.** I wish that the baby mix up story would bring Tate and Theresa back to town! It is time for she and Brady to get back together!
