Hey so I saw that you rb that post about odaat and on the tags you talked about the translation saying "feminine" instead of other word and I was wondering, how would you translate that scene?
Hey anon. That’s the thing, I have no idea! I would venture to say the pun is completely untranslateable, so the next best thing would be to find a funny equivalent that more or less relates to the idea of Elena being gay and abuelita not knowing. I would have to think about this more, but I would definitely try to avoid anything that could make the audience in the target language think about lesbians in a certain way, particularly since it is aimed at Latin America, where there is still a lot of ignorance in this regard.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful, but your question caught me off-guard, lol.
Edit: I just thought another option would be to translate only one layer of the pun, so using something like a literal translation of “straight”. It would lose the joke, but I can’t count the number of subtitles I’ve seen where there’s just no way to translate a pun and they leave it literally, and it would definitely be a safer alternative than trying to meddle with ways to associate that with heterosexuality.
#I'm drawing a complete blank so I guess I can kind of understand if the subber was pressed for time and left it at that#(especially from what I heard about how much netflix pays its subbers)#because yeah it's hard!#whoever subbed gilmore girls and pride deserves a bonus and a raise tbh#anyway as I said I have a lot of feelings about the translation of gay-related terminology in subtitles for popular shows#if that's not the nerdiest thing I don't know what is#¯\_(ツ)_/¯#like that time in the dubbing for em família where 'sapata' was translated as 'lesbian'#along with all the negative connotations of that word in the source language#nope!!!!#Anonymous
