I hope it’s okay to take a related but different turn on this. I have this happen sometimes, but I have a fun D.I.D. experience with it that I want to share.
I (Nico) write a lot of stories. It’s my primary coping mechanism for stress & trauma. That means a lot of OCs, a lot of AUs, a lot of outlines or plans for stories.
(acronyms here: Dissociative Identity Disorder (D.I.D.); Original Character (OC); Alternate Universe (AU))
However, we also have D.I.D., and because I find the most comfort in fictional stories & in characters I relate to, I often split my own OCs.
Sometimes they take over their story. I’m leaving Nightwalker’s Dream to Harley & Azure; it’s their (love) story. (Harley & Azure are fully taking over; it’s out of my hands now (/not upset).)
Sometimes people front to add something & then let me continue. Sometimes they add notes in my document/notebook of where they want the plot to go.
But sometimes, something even funnier happens. (Or something really sweet.)
I start writing a new piece, and they pop into co-con to make commentary on what I’m writing. They critique, they laugh (/supportive, positive), they smile at the sweet parts.
(co-con = co-conscious, AKA they’re awake/able to communicate but not in control of the body; co-front/front = taking over the body)
It would probably be startling to anyone without D.I.D. if your characters started talking to you / literally writing their own story. But it’s quickly becoming my favourite part of writing LucKai.
LucKai is a ship name, like in fanfic, but they’re both my OCs - Luciano (he/him) & Kairo (he/they).
Sometimes Luciano takes over. He usually adds a line or corrects phrasing (I automatically write in first person, & sometimes he’s like ‘I understand what you mean, but I’d say it like this’). Honestly that’s rather in character (he tends to be very logical, in part to hide from/avoid emotional vulnerability), so it makes sense.
But usually it’s Kai, and he’s a sap (/affectionate). He takes over to gush about his partner*. He’s a poet and his emotions spill all over the pages (/metaphor, positive). On occasion he’ll contribute something factual, especially something on trauma-informed psychology that he remembers researching for us**. But usually he’s here to brag about Luc. (That’s also in character.)
(* using partner because whether they’re mutually-crushing-in-denial, dating, or fiancés varies by story, & they’re married in our system 🤷‍♂️)
(** Kai & Spirit do most of that research so I forget the specifics 😅)
Their (Kai’s) rambles are my favourite part now. I got a whole paragraph out of him when I wrote a confession scene for one of my pieces (I can share if people wanna see). They’re the sweetest lover (/sincere, positive).
(And of course now LucKai are in the background grinning sheepishly (/amused, affectionate). They love to gush/brag about one another, but get shy if it’s acknowledged. (Not in a please-don’t way but in a yeah-I-do-that-but-now-I’m-extra-aware-of-it kind of way (/affectionate, supportive).)
But yeah, this is a thing. I get to witness my OCs write (or chime in to critique) their stories in real time. ☺💜
~Nico (he/they)
the best part of writing is when your characters start ignoring your outline and you realize they’re better at this than you.

The Queen of Romantasy and the Race Car Prince - Chapter 1
Pairing: Lando Norris x Elizabeth "Lizzie" Treshton (Original Character)
Summary:
Elizabeth Treshton—bestselling romantasy author, queen of fae heartbreak, and sworn devotee of a carefully structured routine—never expected her service dog to abandon protocol and diagnose a Formula 1 driver with something. But that’s exactly what happens when Mara the wonder-dog ditches Lizzie’s side to aggressively alert to none other than Lando Norris in the middle of a coffee shop.
Warnings and Notes:
Mention of epilepsy and service animals. I don't myself suffer from epilepsy, so I asked my IRL friend, who thankfully was nice enough to let me ask her all the questions I could come up with. The rest I asked Reddit. So everything that's wrong...that's totally my fault and not on purpose.
As always big thanks to @llirawolf , who listens to me ramble

The smell of freshly brewed coffee and warm pastries filled the cozy café, the kind of place that hummed with quiet conversations and the occasional clatter of ceramic cups. Lizzie sat in the corner, tucked into her usual spot by the window,  her mind was elsewhere.
The Laptop was open, her fingers hovering over the keyboard, but the words…the words refused to come.
Instead, she sipped at her now lukewarm tea, absentmindedly, running her fingers through Mara’s soft fur. Mara’s chocolate coloured head was resting on Lizzie’s knee, watching her, her tail rhythmically thumping against the floor.
They often came here..nearly every day, to be exact.
Elizabeth Treshton’s life was built around her routine after all.
She knew the exact number of steps from her apartment to the cozy coffee shop on the corner. She knew the best seat—by the window, tucked away, where Mara could curl up at her feet while she wrote. And she knew the barista always had her order memorized: earl grey tea with a dash of milk, one sugar, and a small bowl of water for Mara.
They knew them both. They knew not to bother Mara while working, even when it looked like the dog wasn’t working. She was.
Mara told Lizzie when her body once again decided that having seizures was something it should do and then stayed with her through the whole…shitty ordeal that were said epileptic seizures.
Still, they thrived on their usual routine. And they hadn’t been able to have that for weeks, because Lizzie had been busy with all the publicity surrounding An Autumn of Flames and Stone and the fact that her little book had reached No. 1 of the New York Times Bestselling list.
Which meant…that she now got to write the last book in the Seasons of Fate Series…Something that she never thought she would get to do.
This had been her dream since she was a child…and now…now she finally got to do this. This was her job! Her dream job!
And if this chapter was finally going to start going her way, then maybe Lizzie would be feeling like she actually knew what she was doing too.
Just at that moment, Mara suddenly lifted her head, ears alert and then stood. Lizzie’s pulse spiked. She waited with baited breath for Mara to tell her that another seizure was incoming, even when Lizzie couldn’t feel anything yet.
“Mara?” Lizzie murmured, feeling her stomach knot.
Her service dog didn’t react to her voice. Instead, Mara’s attention was locked on something—or someone—across the café.
Lizzie turned just in time to see Mara move.
Straight toward a guy at the counter.
“Mara, heel!” Lizzie called, already pushing back her chair, heart pounding.
But Mara wasn’t listening.
Mara always listened. Lizzie had not once been in this situation.
Mara was always well behaved. Mara had been trained so well that this was nothing Lizzie had ever needed to worry about…but apparently that day Mara had decided that her time as picture-perfect seizure dog was over and instead she would run across the cafe, straight to random guy…
The guy turned just as Mara reached him. He was tall, wearing a hoodie pulled up over messy brown curls, and he looked as confused as Lizzie felt when Mara pressed her nose against his hand.
“Oh,” he said, blinking down at her. “Uh. Hi?”
Lizzie practically skidded to a stop beside them. “I’m so sorry—she doesn’t normally—”
And then she got a proper look at him.
Her brain stuttered.
Because that wasn’t just any guy in a hoodie.
That was Lando Norris.
Formula 1 driver. Twitch streamer. Walking, talking social media chaos generator.
She knew who he was. Of course, she bloody knew who he was.
They were literally in Woking. A stone thrown away from the McLaren Technology Center.
And even if Lizzie hadn’t grown up seemingly right next to the headquarters of a Formula 1 racing team, she still would have grown up as the daughter of a man that believed that Formula 1 was just as important on Sundays as church services were.
Her dad was the original F1 fan and Lizzie had easily inherited his love for the sport.
So to say that she was…a little bit starstruck, because there was Lando freaking Norris standing in front of her, holding a  coffee cup in one hand, a half-eaten croissant in the other, looking between Lizzie and Mara with increasing confusion, was an understatement
“So, uh.” Lando tilted his head. “What’s happening?”
Lizzie swallowed hard, her mind racing. “She’s a service dog,” she managed, her voice tight. “She only does that when—”
Mara insistently pushed her nose against Lando’s hand again. When he didn’t react she started to headbutt his thigh aggressively.
The realization slammed into Lizzie with the force of a freight train. Mara had alerted to him.
Lando still looked baffled, shifting slightly like he wasn’t sure what to do. “Is—uh—is she okay?”
Lizzie swallowed hard. “I—I think she’s actually asking you that.”
His brow furrowed, then a flicker of something passed over his face. A split-second of realization. “Oh.”
Lizzie watched as Lando’s hand curled slightly, his fingers flexing like he was suddenly hyper-aware of his own body.
“Do you feel off?” she asked, voice softer now. “Lightheaded? Dizzy? Aura?”
His lips parted like he wanted to argue—but then he hesitated. “I mean… I was feeling a bit weird this morning.”
Mara let out another small whine, nosing at his wrist.
Lizzie exhaled sharply. “You need to sit down.”
“I’m fine—”
“Sit. Down. And drink some water, for god’s sake.”
He blinked at her in mild shock, but something in her tone must’ve struck him because he moved, letting her guide him to an empty table.
Lizzie crouched next to him, all business now. “Do you have any underlying medical issues? Mara was trained to alert to my Epilepsy. Have you ever had a seizure?!”
Lando shook his head. “No, nothing like that. But—” He ran a hand through his hair. “I do get migraines sometimes. And sometimes before I get one, things feel… off.”
Oh.
Lizzie sat back on her heels. “Then she probably picked up on that.”
Lando looked down at Mara, who had now settled next to him, still watching carefully.
“Is this—normal?” he asked.
“For her, yeah.” Lizzie scratched the back of her neck. “She’s trained to detect seizures, but she picks up on other stuff too. She’s never alerted to someone else before, though.”
Lando let out a short laugh, like he wasn’t sure whether to be impressed or concerned. “Huh. Well, I’m still here, so I think I’m good,” he finally said and Lizzie exhaled.
“Sorry, about that,” she apologised. “She has never done that before.”
Lando grinned, slow and teasing. “Guess I’m just special, huh?” he teased.
A pause. Then, hesitantly, Lando reached down, fingers brushing Mara’s head.
“Thanks, I guess,” he murmured. Mara’s tail gave a small, reassuring wag.
“So, like… I am not dying, right?” Lando asked her suddenly, and Lizzie let out a nervous laugh, shaking her head.
“No. But she’s never wrong about this kind of thing.” Lizzie sighed. “Drink some water. Eat something. Just—don’t ignore it.”
Lando hummed. “Noted.” Then he tilted his head, studying her. “And you are?”
She blinked. “What?”
His smile widened. “Your name. And her name too.”
Lizzie felt warmth creep up her neck.
She bit her lip.
“I am Lizzie. That’s Mara.”
Lando grinned, like he was committing both names to memory. “Lizzie and Mara. Got it.”
Lizzie wasn’t sure why her stomach flipped at the way he said her name, but she pushed the feeling aside. “And you’re Lando,” she said, more to ground herself than anything else.
His grin widened. “So you do know who I am.”
Lizzie scoffed. “I live in Woking. I’d have to be actively avoiding the internet to not know who you are.”
Lando let out a short laugh, shaking his head. “Fair point.” He glanced down at Mara, who had finally relaxed, still keeping a watchful eye on him. “So… does this mean I have, like, a cool dog guardian angel now?”
Lizzie rolled her eyes, though a smile tugged at the corners of her lips. “Only if you promise not to ignore your body when it’s telling you something’s wrong.”
He hummed, tapping his fingers against the table. “Noted.”
The café felt warmer than it had before as they looked at each other. Lizzie, still crouched next to Lando and Mara. The air between them felt charged, and Lizzie was suddenly reminded of a fact she had never forgotten: Lando Norris was unfairly attractive.
"So...are you here often or was today my lucky day?"
She blinked at him, caught slightly off guard by the question. “I—uh. Yeah. I’m here most days.”
Lando nodded like that was exactly the answer he was hoping for. “Cool. I might have to come by more often then.”
Lizzie raised an eyebrow. “Because of the coffee? Or because of the dog that just diagnosed you?”
He smirked. “Both. And maybe because the company’s not bad either.”
She stared at him for a moment, trying to figure out if he was actually flirting or just naturally charming. Either way, it was… a lot.
Lando hesitated, then scratched the back of his neck. “Look, this might be weird, but—can I give you my number?”
Lizzie’s brain stalled. “What?”
His grin turned a little sheepish. “I mean, you know, in case Mara ever wants to check in on me again. Or, uh, if you ever want to.”
Lizzie exhaled a laugh, shaking her head. “That was smooth.”
“I try,” he said, dimples on full display.
Lizzie couldn’t help the smile tugging at her lips, part amused and part baffled at the whole situation. She had gone from sitting in her usual spot, writing away in her notebook as Mara dozed by her feet to now crouching next to a Formula 1 driver giving her his number. What sort of alternate universe was this?
She hesitated, but then Mara nudged her hand, like she was making the decision for her. Lizzie huffed, pulled out her phone, and slid it across the table. “Fine. But if you start texting me memes at 2 AM, I’m blocking you.”
Lando chuckled, tapping in his number before handing it back. “No promises.”
Lizzie glanced down at the contact name he’d put in: Lando ‘Not Dying (Yet)’ Norris.
She sighed. “You’re impossible.”
Lando shot her a cheeky grin as he got to his feet. “It’s part of the charm.”
Lizzie rolled her eyes, the smile stubbornly clinging to her face. It only widened when Lando bent down to say a quick goodbye to Mara, who promptly licked his hand in response.
Lizzie shook her head, but she couldn’t quite fight back her smile. “Come on, Mara. Let’s go before you decide to start diagnosing other random strangers too.”
As she walked away, Lando called after her, voice warm with amusement. “See you around, Lizzie.”
She didn’t look back—but her stupid smile stayed all the way home.

The morning air was crisp, the kind of early autumn chill that made your breath curl in the air but wasn’t quite cold enough for a proper coat. The park was quiet, save for the occasional jogger or dog walker, the golden sunlight filtering through the trees.
Lando arrived a few minutes early—not that he was eager or anything. He just… didn’t want to be late. Which was not the same as being eager.
He shifted on his feet, hands shoved in the pockets of his hoodie. He wasn’t nervous. Not really. Okay, maybe a little.
It wasn’t a date. Not officially. Just a walk. With a girl. A very cute girl. Who had a dog that might have magical powers if yesterday was anything to go by.
He heard her before he saw her—the sound of Mara’s paws on the pavement, the soft jingle of her collar. Then—
“Morning,” Lizzie said, smiling as she approached. She had a bright red scarf wrapped around her neck, her dark hair pulled up into a messy bun, and Mara trotted happily at her side.
Lando tried not to notice how good she looked or how her smile lit up her face. He was cool. He was casual. He wasn’t a blushing teenager getting flustered over a girl.
He failed utterly.
Lando exhaled, grinning back. “Hey. You actually showed up.”
Lizzie rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of amusement in her expression. Mara padded over and sniffed at Lando’s hand, her tail wagging excitedly.
“As if you weren’t expecting me to,” she said, eyes glittering with humor. “Did you really think I’d ditch you?”
Yes. Yes, he had.
“I dunno. Maybe you’d wake up and realize agreeing to go on a walk with a random guy from a coffee shop was a terrible idea.”
Lizzie laughed, the sound surprisingly musical. “It probably was. But you’ve got Mara’s seal of approval, so you can’t be too dangerous, right?”
She glanced down at Mara, who panted happily up at Lando, as if in agreement.
"Can I touch her?" he asked carefully. "I should have asked yesterday, I am sorry." He may had spent too much time yesterday reading up on Service Dogs. And what exactly they did for their handlers, especially if they had handlers that had epilepsy like Lizzie had.
Lizzie smiled, her expression softening. “It’s okay. I know it’s not exactly common knowledge.” She nodded. “You can touch her. She’s off-duty right now, so you’re good.”
Lando crouched down, holding a hand out, allowing Mara to sniff him. When she didn’t shrink away, he cautiously patted her on the head. Her fur was silky-smooth to the touch.
"Hello Mara," he greeted her. "I even brought  Peanut Butter for my saviour.”
He probably shouldn't have said that. At the sound of these two words Mara suddenly perked up, immediately sat down before Lando’s feet.
“You shouldn’t say the magic words unless you plan to give some to her right at that exact moment,” Lizzie said drily.
Lando laughed in surprise, looking down at Mara as she sat there, looking up at him expectantly. “She is serious about peanut butter, huh?”
He pulled the jar out of his pocket, unscrewing the cap before holding it out for Mara to sniff. She stuck her nose in it, tail wagging furiously.
“I think she approves,” he said, watching as Mara licked at the peanut butter.
Only after she had been allowed to stick her snout in there for a full 5 seconds was Mara ready to continue their walk.
“So, how’s the head?” Lizzie asked, tilting her head toward him.
“Better. I took something last night before it got too bad and slept it off.” He glanced down at Mara. “Not sure I would’ve done that if someone hadn’t warned me.”
Lizzie hummed. “She’s good at her job. Even when she has never alerted to somebody else before.”
Lando tried not to let that go straight to his ego. Tried.
Lando tried to sound casual as he spoke, but couldn’t quite hold back a hint of satisfaction. "I guess that means I’m extra special, then?"
Lizzie raised an eyebrow at that, but there was a laugh in her eyes. “Don’t let it get to your head.”
He chuckled, shoving his hands back in his pockets. “Yeah, too late for that.”
They fell into a comfortable silence, just walking together, the sound of the leaves crunching under their feet and Mara’s paws filling the air.
“So, what do you do, exactly?” Lando asked, trying to shift the conversation somewhere less awkward. Though he was pretty sure that the abrupt topic change was not gonna help at all.
Lizzie smirked. “You mean besides walk dogs?” she joked.
“Yeah. You know, because you know what I do” He gestured at himself dramatically, trying to be playful. “It’s not fair that you are the big mystery.”
Lizzie laughed and shoook her head. “It’s not fair,” she agreed. “I write books.”
Lando blinked. “What kind of books?” he asked, his curiousity piqued.
“Romantasy,” Lizzie answered, watching him closely, waiting for a reaction.
What?
Lando frowned. “Like… romance and fantasy?” Was that a thing?
“Exactly.”
“Is that, like, dragons? Or is it—”
“Faes,” Lizzie supplied. “And magic, and epic love stories, and usually some kind of dramatic war.”
Lando’s eyes widened as she talked, the concept of 'romantasy' sinking in. “Wow. So, like… magic powers and romance and all that good stuff?”
Lizzie nodded, a faint smile playing at the corners of her mouth. “Pretty much. And there’s always a bit of adventure thrown in for good measure.”
Lando thought for a moment, picturing tales of epic battles and star-crossed lovers. It sounded…. Nice.
“You write those books that people fight over on the internet, don’t you?” he asked. Because he was pretty sure he had seen things about Morally grey love interests and a enemies-to-lovers arc and people fighting with other people about which fictional man was hotter.
Lizzie’s smile widened, her eyes glittering with humour. “Guilty as charged. I write the books that people have passionate debates over online. The ones where people are way too invested in the love triangle and have very strong opinions about which fictional man is hotter.”
His brows shot up. “Wait—are you, like, famous?”
She shrugged. “Depends on who you ask.”
Lando narrowed his eyes, then pulled out his phone and started typing.
Lizzie swatted at his arm. “Are you Googling me?”
“Uh, yeah?”
"What are you evening googling? Lizzie Romantasy?" she asked him with a snort. "You probably won't find me. Try Elizabeth Treshton."
The results for 'Elizabeth Treshton' appeared on the screen, and he scrolled through for a moment, articles and book covers, reviews and interviews popping up.
A moment later he got his answer.
"You sold millions of books."
Lando stared at Lizzie with a mixture of incredulity and awe. "I think that counts as famous."
Lizzie shrugged. “And yet, my dog still expects me to carry her up the stairs when she’s being lazy.”
Mara wagged her tail like she agreed.
Lando laughs, shaking his head. “I have a feeling Mara has you wrapped around her paw.”
She hummed in agreement, her hand going to the end of Mara's leash as the dog stopped to sniff at a tree.
“I swear, she knows exactly how cute she is and uses it to her advantage.”
Lando slipped his phone back into his pocket, shaking his head. “That’s actually really cool. How’d you get into it?”
Lizzie hesitated, then exhaled. “I have epilepsy. Had a lot of seizures when I was younger, which meant a lot of time in hospitals. You get really bored after a while.” She snorted. “So, I kept busy. Told myself stories, read, learned to crochet. But writing stuck. Studied English lit at uni, got a publishing deal right after. I was really lucky.”
Lando nodded. “That’s kinda sick, actually. You get to make stuff up for a living.”
Lizzie chuckled. “Yeah. I guess you could say that.” She glanced at him. “What about you? What’s it like, racing cars all day?”
He grinned. “Honestly? A lot more boring than you’d think.”
Lizzie raised an eyebrow. “You drive 300 kilometers an hour for a living.”
“Yeah, but I also stare at spreadsheets for hours. It’s not all fast cars and cheering crowds.”
“I mean, if you didn’t look at data, I think there would be bigger problems,” Lizzie said, teasing.
He rolled his eyes. “I do look at it, I promise.”
“So, how’d you end up doing that?”
“My mum tried to get me into horses—wasn’t into it. But I wanted to drive. Did quad biking, motorcycle riding… then my dad took me to a kart race, and that was it.”
“That’s sweet. My dad and I have watched F1 together since I was a kid," Lizzie said with a grin.
Lando glanced at her. “Really? That’s awesome. So, are you, like, one of those people who actually knows what’s going on during a race?”
Lizzie grinned. “You’re just mad because I probably know more than you.”
“Impossible,” Lando said, acting affronted. “I drive the car, I know what I’m doing.”
Lizzie raised an eyebrow. “Do you, though?”
He gaped at her. “I can’t believe you just questioned my driving skills.”
She just laughed. “I can’t drive at all, you know.”
“I can teach you,” he offered immediately.
She laughed. “I am legally not allowed to get behind the wheel,” Lizzie told him drily. “Epilepsy, you know. If I get a seizure while driving, I would accidentally murder people,”
“That sucks,” Lando said quietly.
“It’s just one of those things you get used to. You get used to not having control over that part of your life.”
Lando felt a pang of sympathy. “That must be tough.”
Lizzie shrugged. “It is, sometimes. But Mara’s a huge help. And I get by.”
“Yeah, I can see that,” Lando said, glancing down at the dog, who was happily leading the way once again.
Lizzie smiled. “She’s the best. And it’s not all bad. Gives me more time to write, at least.”
Lando grinned. “I’m definitely interested in reading some of your work now.”
She laughed. “You are aware that they are all like 500 pages, right?”
Lando groaned dramatically. “You’re telling me you’ve published multiple million-selling books, and they’re all doorstoppers?”
"I am a wordy person, you know," Lizzie shot back.
Lando groaned again, but he smiled, too. “You’re making me work for it here.”
Lizzie just shrugged, her mouth curving into a smirk. “You’re just going to have to deal with it.”
” Lando grinned, already planning his next move. “Alright, super important question,” he said, stuffing his hands into his hoodie pocket.
Lizzie raised a brow. “Oh?”
“Who’s your favorite F1 driver?”
She let out a soft laugh. “You really want to know?”
Lando nodded, deadly serious. “This is crucial information. Make or break.”
She laughed, a strand of dark chocolate brown hair escaping her bun.
“My dad is a die hard Ferrari fan,” she told him. “Seriously. Like you know that quote that there are only two religions in Italy, Catholicism and Ferrari? That’s pretty much my dad,” she said with a shake of her heard. “So for him it was always Schumacher…
As they strolled through the park, Mara trotting ahead with her nose to the ground, Lando shot Lizzie a sideways glance.
Lizzie hummed, drawing out the suspense. “When I was little, I loved Kimi Raikkonen.”
Lando groaned. “Kimi? Seriously?!?”
Lizzie rolled her eyes. “You asked! I was, like, ten. You weren’t even in F1 yet.”
“Still hurts,” Lando muttered. “Alright, fine. What about now? Who’s your current favorite?”
Lizzie smirked. “Are you asking because you want me to say you?”
He feigned innocence. “Noooo… but also, yes.”
She pretended to consider. “Well, I do appreciate drivers with great car control and a smooth racing style.”
Lando’s grin stretched wide. “That does sound familiar—”
“Which is why I love watching Lewis.”
Lando gasped, scandalized. “Lizzie, what the hell?”
She laughed. “What? He’s a seven-time world champion! You can’t be mad at me for that.”
“I can definitely be mad at you for that.” He shook his head in mock disappointment. “I thought we had something special.”
Lizzie smirked. “Would it make you feel better if I said you’re my favorite driver I’ve ever gone on a walk with?”
Lando narrowed his eyes at her, fighting a smile. “Barely.”

i apologize in advance if this is too long and rambling lol. i just need to make you aware of the moral quandary i’ve found swimming around in my head all day. firstly, your book is amazing. i don’t think ive seen a writer capture my attention and also rip my heart into pieces so throughly (although, I, the Forgotten One is maybe tied with yours in my mind).
so, trystan and syfyn.
IRL i consider anyone who sits by as atrocities happen to be completely complicit and (sometimes) as equally as guilty as the perpetrator. your story makes my head spin as this is a stance i take very strongly and i struggle with hating syfyn and trystan. on one hand, my MC does hate them for things they’ve done (breaking his arm, holding him down while people essentially experiment on him, and even not really doing anything after finding out what happened to MC and learning that the queen is working with the “enemy”). other times, my MC can’t hate them for being a victim of circumstance, just as MC himself was (and is). my MC sees them for who they used to be, how their circumstances have shaped them, and how they may be punished for defying the crown but also can’t help but feel a personal and… maybe political betrayal? my MC, and me by extension, have been grappling with a couple questions: at what point does being a victim of circumstance no longer absolve someone of guilt? how many horrible things must someone do before their allies see that something must change? at what point does someone become just as guilty as the perpetrator because they refused to lift a finger either way? is it wrong to hate someone as a whole because of circumstances that, up to a certain point, were beyond their control? is it wrong to hate someone that follows a tyrant because they fear for their safety? what if it’s all they’ve ever known and they have no clear path forward without their leader?
i hope all of that made sense and don’t seem like the ramblings of a lunatic lol. i’m not very intellectual but these are just some things i’ve been thinking about as i gave your story another read last night and i was bursting at the seams to share my thoughts. like i said before, your story is beautiful. tragically beautiful, perhaps? i’m wishing you the best of luck in your work and personal life! and thank you so much for sharing this story with us; we don’t deserve it, but we will try to.
(also sorry if i misspelled trystan lol)
Ah no don't apologize!! I love discussions like this re. the characters, especially because pretty much all of them are morally questionable to one degree or another. It always makes me happy to hear when the game has made people start to think and worry about bigger moral questions like this :)
I think both Syfyn and Trystan definitely are intended to make that question be asked. And the game won't push a particular agenda either way re. if the Commander forgives/doesn't forgive, blames them/finds them to be victims, etc.
Of course, something I do think is fun that plenty of characters are wondering this very same question about MC, and the role they used to fulfill for Plaithus vs. what they are now, post-exile... 👀
Thank you so much for the kind words :)

I know that we (Usopp Nation) love to discuss the multiple different ways the eventual meeting between Usopp and Yassop could go but today I wanted to discuss how I think the Strawhats would react to Usopp having/wanting/feeling like he needs to meet his father but hesitating for [Insert reason here].
Luffy: Likes Yassop obviously and would be excited to see him again! But our emotionally intelligent king would pick up on Usopp's vibes and just outright ask him what’s wrong. Would respect his decision to go or not go. If it’s a no though, he'd go and break the news but do it much too bluntly (“Yeah, Usopp didn’t want to come!”). Honestly the whole time there he’s unintentionally making Yassop feel like the biggest piece of shit.
Zoro: Pretends to not care/not have an opinion when he in fact has plenty of both. Zoro's just not the kind of person to care about blood connections, not his own anyway, so he'd probably veer on the side of not going but acts neutral. Regardless of Usopp's decision though Zoro is there to make sure he sticks to it, no wussing out! If he says he’s going he’s going, even if he’s got to hide behind Zoro the whole walk there.
Nami: Usopp's BFFL. She’s there to hype him up! No shitty absent father is allowed to make him feel like shit! She’s helping him get ready, picking a killer outfit and hairstyle for him, everyone knows looking good is the best social armour! If he decides not to go she’s still dressing up him but this time to go and paint the town red! If he does want to go she’s heading there right alongside him! Even if it looks like she’s engaged with something else best believe she’s keeping a hawk eye on Usopp.
Sanji: Guy who is so anti biological father. Is staunchly against Usopp going but tries to hide it behind neutrality and fails miserably. Ultimately though having had some emotional catharsis with facing his own father he’ll accept Usopp's decision no matter what. Absolutely tags along and brings a dish because he was raised a proper chef. (“Oh this? It’s Usopp’s favourite. Not that you had any way of knowing.” *faux polite customer service smile*)
Chopper: Little fella is CONFLICTED. On one hand he’s literally only heard good things about Yassop from both Usopp and Luffy so obviously this guy must be great! But if that was true why did Ussop look so..scared? He decides to approach this from a doctor perspective first by sitting Ussop for a checkup and letting him ramble all his thoughts out. If Usopp decides not to go Chopper's making an official announcement that Usopp's got ‘can’t-leave-the-boat-disease and has to stay for his own good.
Robin: Notices Usopp's discomfort immediately and whisks him away. Sits him down with a cup of her secret stash of soothing tea and lays down all the facts for him. Yes, he has no obligation to go see his father just cause he’s here. No it doesn’t make him a bad person if he doesn’t want to. Despite how wildly different they are, she’s the best at understanding his feelings right now and all that come with it. If he decides to not go, she’ll go in his stead to explain (and also to make sure Yassop doesn’t try to go himself).
Franky: He’s about as emotional as you’d expect. He’d probably be encouraging Usopp to go, not for his dad but for himself. His dreams of being a ‘proper man’ and ‘brave warrior of the sea’ means he shouldn’t live or die with regrets or what ifs. Regardless of Usopp's decision, Franky just wants to make he won’t regret for one reason or another. Will tag along and hype up Ussop to anyone and everyone.
Brook: Like Robin he’s taking Usopp somewhere else to calm down and think. He’s also playing him some soft violin to relax to. They don’t talk much, just let the music guide them for a bit. In a moment of violin driven vulnerability, Brook would tell Usopp that regardless of what does or does not happen, he has a place and a family right here, and that won’t ever change. Places neutral but would prefer if Usopp stayed and didn’t risk getting hurt.
Jinbei: Probably knows Yassop on a semi-causal level and therefore knew of Usopp long before FMI. Was really stunned upon hearing this would be Usopp's first proper meeting with his father. Jinbei's got plenty of sage of advice and can wash away Usopp's parental insecurities by reminding him of who he is and how any man worth a damn would be proud to call him his son. Stays behind if Usopp goes but only because he’s worried of overstepping if he does.
BONUS! (Argue with your mama, your daddy and your congressman Vivi will be the final Strawhat!!)
Vivi ft Karoo: They’re absolutely gobsmacked. Vivi's the one that brings out some latent anger Usopp doesn’t even realize he’s been holding in. I can definitely see Vivi wanting to go even if Usopp's not, she’s very confrontational after all but she defect to what Usopp wants ultimately. If he does want to go she’s right there with him and is totally throwing some shade Yassop's way. Karoo is there as a supportive friend and a quick exit strategy if Usopp needs it.

Please give me your headcanons/ideas on Ranger Marsh, and my life is yours🙏 (He's my favorite old man yeehaw squeeeeeee)
YEAH HE IS
Ranger marsh is THE FATHER OF ALL TIME to me because listen-
I live in Florida. Whenever they talk about manatees or red tide or the effects of a cold snap im like YOOO I KNOW ABOUT THAT!!!
I need yall to understand 🙏 hes part of the fcking ecosystem.
He understands the needs and behaviours and everything about the everglades and its creatures. He knows how to talk to them and they know him and love him. He chooses to go out and help right away with this " I gotcha dont worry about nothing!" attitude
Hes so connected with it and its beautiful-
Its just that sense of community hes got with all the creatures in the everglades that makes me 🥺 hes got such a kind heart and he seems like the person to choose to do something because someone has to yk?
Alot of people would be offput by all the bugs and heat and etc, but he just goes oh well and keeps going along and I think that is SO special
And im gonna be honest here. Alot of people ARENT. Like at all, and they do the dumbest sht
One time my dad and I were on a board walk near a river that had gators in it and there were signs about it too. We saw this??? Fcking guy in a whole business suit with his kid wanting to give a little gator fcking store bought chicken nuggets??? 💀🙏 we like kindly explain uhhh heyyy don't do that cuz u don't want gators to associate humans with food or (gestures broadly to all the many reasons u shouldn't feed wild animals)
And then we continued our walk, but when we turned back we fcking saw a mini crowd (with several small kids leaning THROUGH THE GAP in the railing) surrounding a guy with a kiddie fishing pole trying to??? Idk feed the gator the chicken nuggets.
There were signs about not disturbing the wildlife.
I didnt exaggerate a single aspect of this btw.
Like thank fck gators are ambush predators and not chasers cuz those guys can run and climb like nobody's business... and hide under cars
SIDE TANGEANT ASIDE alot of people just aren't in tune with and have like a totally unrealistic and detached from reality expectation of that kinda nature. But ranger marsh (i headcanon that his first name is Rover btw cuz not only is that a flooding guy name but cmon- RIVER MARSH?!!) Is always so patient about explaining that kind of stuff to the others in the show
Hes got an understanding and a system on how to handle things.
Also I do appreciate how he struggles with understanding technology and prefers old fashioned ways. Because while there are alot of folks like that, alot of people can be... very aggressive about it if u disagree with them :(
But ranger marsh, while he can't understand, he still does come around and appreciates it the best he can yk? Like sure he doesn't get WHY and he sucks at it, but he comes around and appreciates it, even if it isn't always for him
The awe he felt when the gup k went under water and he saw the world he loves from an entirely new angle? Oh my god my heart-
He would absolutely take in any stray creature that needs help, he feels like the kinda guy that would've tried to help a wild animal heal up in the garage when they were a kid and everyone else told him not to touch it 🥺
Also personal headcanon time:
I dont think this guy could keep a secret for the life of him. Like this guy doesn't even realize, he feels like the guy would would see something weird and then go " well ill be i never did see anythin as strange as that before" to a fcking bush or the sky
He sort just has this factual way of speaking that reminds me of people who go "well yeah well when ya go n talk her dont mention x and x cuz I'm pretty sure she's suspecting her boyfrens been cheatin on her and oh I wasn't supposed to share that was i."
Also I feel like maybe I'm just projecting and making him autistic but like??? Has a hard time dealing with change??? Likes being in the wild with a bunch of creatures??? Probably needs his "two hours of contemplating on the back porch" every day ????
Hes absolutely the type to want to dig in the mud for hours thank you, he absolutely went fck living a normal life in society I want to be friends with the animals under my porch
I desperately want him to basically go "hm ok ur staying here for tonight" to calico jack who is the equivalent of a (very kind and gentle) feral stray 🙏
I'm gonna make a post about their dynamic later lol
Cuz likes its an old funky pirate cat with isolation issues thats probably scared of gators and Caimens for I lost me leg reasons and hasn't had like a normal meal in probably over a decade at least
(Cj probably can't handle dairy but he's gonna try (and fail) ranger marsh probably makes delicious mac n cheese)
also cj literally uses a peg leg that can NOT be good for his back, like there's so much special care needed if u have a proper prosthetic but a peg leg is like 💀🙏 so bad
I feel like CJ is this very kind and gentle soul, but the second he meets someone his age (cuz they ARE around the same age) he just becomes a wet gremlin, ill yap more about it on their dynamic post tho
As for the question of "ayyo whats up with ranger marshes wife or rather tweaks mom what's up with that"
I dont think tweaks mom died or anything, I think they just divorced when she was in like middle school and then he got her legos to try to help her feel better 😭
probably just cuz of personal differences... but yk some people can get kinda :| during divorces and stuff
I feel like they were probably high school sweethearts that got married before they even grew as people
It seems to me like tweak was probably homeschooling and definitely was skipping grades and whatever
I liek to think she has lego models of all her gups and that she had an emo phase in middle school 🙏 she still has the spirit in her soul but let's be real she's probably too busy elbows deep in an engine to upkeep that stuff anymore lol
(Ik we saw a younger tweak before in the show but like who says it wasn't at a different point in her life lol)
I dont think she was necessarily into emo specifically as a way to rebel her own parents btw (at least not her dad) but just because she liked the culture lol and was probably on my space as a teen
She 100% tried to take her dad to a monster truck show at least once and he absolutely did not understand the hype 😭 but tweak was inspired to take inspiration from the mix of animal designs and unique shapes into something more eco friendly and versatile tho
Like the gup k is just a wetland monster truck 🙏
She absolutely had years of trial and error with all sorts of gizmos that exploded at least a few times before she got the hang of engineering
Probably tried to make all sorts of things to help the little critters her pa took care of
Might be part of the reason he doesn't understand tech that well because when ur a kid without alot of money u gotta work with what u have and sometimes that doesn't always work out XD but hey restriction of choices can lead to alot of unique and creative solutions!
idk the exact reason why ranger marsh and his wife would've divorced, maybe it was just a difference in how they envisioned their life styles and the fact ranger marsh seems a bit too "introverted and quiet" for a more social life and environment with a normal job tbh
(Cough autism cough they are both autistic in different ways cough)
but the everglades have always been tweaks home and I doubt she wanted to leave. I think she still talks to her mom and stuff but just... not that much
I dont really think ranger marsh would've tried again in that type of relationship, hes too busy being busy with life and enjoying the small moments
And hot cocoa from the machine that tweak gave him as a gift
He absolutely helped her keep her room organized and tidy as a kid tho, but look at her room into he octopod now XD
Also SOMEONE MAKE HIM SAY " BLESS THEIR HEART" PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE THATS THE NUMBER ONE SOUTHERN SAYING-
Like 🥺 idk if yall know but bless ur heart can mean alot of different stuff depending on the context- it can go from "oh my goodness thats awful I can empathize with that and I wish them the best" to "well.... that person has no FCKING idea what they're doing but.... bless that idiots heart hes trying😂 🙏"

Hello!
I hope your "something stupid" actually turns out to be very fulfilling - even fun.
As for a prompt . . . I immediately thought of what makes me anxious and wondered if you could do something with "supporting a loved one through dentist-visit-anxiety."
Or, perhaps more fun might be dealing with a post-dental-work-loopy loved one.
Hugs.
Biggest of hugs to you! I don't think the below quite matches what you were probably expecting but it's where the muse wanted to go... Thank you for the distraction!
Gordon’s foot hadn’t stopped tapping the whole drive across the city. He’d been restless since Virgil had gotten up that morning, up and down from the sofa in the apartment adamant that he didn’t need to nap.
Virgil knew he had probably spent the night clock watching, waiting for the moment that they could leave the apartment and head to the hospital. Moreover, he understood his younger brother’s anxiety.
He had been back to the hospital plenty of times since he had been released, and had eventually been comfortable enough to go to his rechecks without a brotherly escort. He’d had bloods, scans, and physio for months, and it had all very much finally paid off.
Until one of the screws in his leg had come loose and started causing discomfort.
It had been a concerning turn for all of them, each afraid that any form of regression would send Gordon further back from his return to duty. When they had been so close to having him back, it felt like another blow that they would be forced to struggle to stand from.
The doctors had assured Gordon that removal would solve the issue, that the procedure would be straightforward and his recovery prompt.
Then they had told him about the anaesthetic.
Gordon hadn’t been able to sit still all week, and with his leg aching his usual outlet of the pool had been a no go. Instead, his nervous energy had flooded the entire house setting both Scott and Alan on edge. Their eldest brother had tried to take control of the situation, only to tip Gordon over the edge and set them both off in a screaming match. Alan had tried to distract him with video games, only for Gordon to get further frustrated when he couldn’t bring himself to focus on the objective.
It had been John that had pulled him from the Island, taking him to the apartment on the mainland and keeping him company. Being the person he was, John had been able to let the nervous energy wash over him without picking up on any of it. He had been able to sit and listen to Gordon’s inane rambling about twenty different subjects and respond appropriately without losing patience.
“You’ll come right down to the theatre with me, right?”
Virgil looked over to his younger brother as he swung the car into an available space.
Gordon knew the answer. It had been the first night after he’d been told of the anaesthetic that they had all sat and planned what would happen that day. Grandma had been the one to pull the strings with the hospital staff, whilst Scott had arranged for a sizable donation to seal the deal. John was waiting for them at the apartment, on hand if extra support was needed.
“Right down to the theatre,” He assured with a certain nod, “and then I’ll be observing until you’re sent to recovery.”
Gordon nodded as he swallowed, his fist tapping lightly against the open palm of his opposite hand as he took a slow even breath.
Reaching across the centre console, he squeezed his brother’s shoulder, “I’ll be right with you the whole time.”
“This is stupid.”
“Not stupid.” He countered, shaking his head, “There’s nothing to feel stupid about here.”
Gordon swallowed again, “It’s gonna make me better.”
“Doesn’t make it less scary.”
“No, but means I’ve gotta do it.”
Virgil pressed his lips together, not really having an answer that would make things better.
“Thanks for being here.”
Virgil shrugged, “Wouldn’t be anywhere else.”
Gordon’s smile was small as he rested his hands on his legs, each breath controlled and steady as he started down at his feet. They all knew he’d get through it, as stubborn as any of the rest of them, and as determined to get himself back to where he had been. They’d all sworn to be there to support him through it all, through the big things and the little things. They’d do anything he asked of them if it made even the slightest of difference, not just to Gordon but to the rest of them.
Scott taking control, Alan’s distraction, John’s listening, it was all their own ways of coping too. Each of them had their own memories and nightmares from seeing a brother in a coma, the thought of him going back there, back to the hospital for any procedure had set them all reeling.
It was Gordon’s anxiety that had given Virgil the excuse to tag along for the day, but it was as much for the rest of the family as it was for their resident fish.
“I think we should go out at the weekend.” Gordon started as he reached for the door handle, “We could bring Two over and go to that steak place on the beach we like.”
Virgil smiled in agreement as Gordon stepped out of the car, following his little brother’s lead as he pulled the key from the ignition. Shutting the door, he followed Gordon towards the hospital entrance, falling into step with him as easily as normal.
“I’ll organise it whilst you’re snoozing,” He offered, knowing it would be a good distraction for everyone, “but I’m not liable if Scott picks the place you’re banned from for desert.”
Gordon laughed softly as he looked up to the hospital entrance, “Tell him it was my idea, I’m sure he’ll change his mind then.”
Slinging an arm across the broad swimmer’s shoulders, Virgil nodded, “You ready?”
Gordon rolled his shoulders under his arm before he nodded slowly, “Got my bro with me, I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.”
Together they walked into the building, both thinking of the weekend, steak, and their family.

I love the little AU of duchess reader running away 🥹 but I'm evil and I need to see the guys suffer, so how long does it take for them to realise she's gone/what happens when they find out? Because I'm imagining it takes them...some time, and then they think back to when they last saw her (which may or may not have been the same day she left, given how little they see her) and then get SUPER embarrassed because HOW could they lose a WHOLE PERSON?
(kinda low key want someone's reaction to be "how is this gonna LOOK?" so someone else can be like "dude wtf she's a PERSON not a POSSESSION")
Sorry for rambling in your inbox 😅
I like to think that reader let them see her the day she left- maybe as just a one last reaffirmation for herself that she isn’t wanted here and she doesn’t like it here. Very, very assured that leaving, even if it won’t be easy, is the right choice for her.
Also for that interaction- I can just imagine John being the one to say that, and maybe Kyle or Johnny, or maybe another servant or someone else hired to find her, answering him like that 🙂‍↕️ a rude, cold, wake-up all but one very deserved

“Didn’t expect you too.” She told him with an eye roll before shrugging when he said he’d stick around for a bit longer. “I don’t know. Probably some European country. I’ve just heard it over the years.” She commented. Reaching into the bowl to pull out another grape but all she could feel was stems. “Just because I was born lucky doesn’t mean anything. I mean did you forget the whole changeling thing or the criminal thing? Neither of those are really what I would consider lucky.” She explained to him before sighing heavily. “Oh shut up, you’re acting like you’re not kissing my sister at midnight. Leyla will find you.” She reassured him. It was when he asked who that she started to panic slightly and her cheeks flushed red. Resting her head in her hand and she tried to muffle her words. “Might maybe be Song.” Trying to play it off as if she’d just said the most mundane thing. “Ken— how can he not know? I’ve tried to kiss him twice now, I showed up to his bar in my night gown for Christ Sakes.” Letting out the annoyance that was overwhelming her, she angrily hit the bowl away from her. “I don’t know how else I can make it more clear besides out right saying it and I’ll be honest that’s the last thing I want to do. At least if he continues to reject me like he has then I can play it off and pretend it’s not a thing. My god if I actually say the loud part out loud then we have to acknowledge it.” She rambled on before covering her face with both hands. “I don’t want to do this if it’s just going to end up with me being rejected. It already hurt bad enough when I walked away last time from someone I liked.” Raking a hand through her hair as she made it messy. “You know what I should just shove it down and we can pretend this conversation never happened. Sound good?” Finally shutting up for a second and inhaling a deep breath.

Tossing a grape at Ken in the hopes to get him out of the grumpy mood he was in. “We still have hours. Give her time. I’m sure she’ll find you before midnight.” Reassuring him as she put a hand on his shoulder. “Can’t help with the people thing though that’s kinda a thing given it’s a party, but you can hang with me longer if you want. Also I do take full offense.” She teased. “They’re good. Plus, they might provide extra luck if you eat them under a table. I’m kinda hoping if I just eat them at the table the luck will find me.” She could certainly use it. “Well I don’t want too. Trust me I would also like to give away my kiss for once on New Years, but…” Trailing off as she slumped down into her seat. “ I kinda want it to mean something.” Which she knew was stupid, but she couldn’t help it. “But doesn’t matter anyways cause the person I want to kiss clearly doesn’t want to kiss me back so here I sit eating my grapes.”

we're all aware that the religion practiced in rain world by the ancients (iterators, and some of the slugcats by extension) is heavily inspired by buddism-- karma, reincarnation, ascension that leads to enlightenment where the need for the life/death cycle is past you now because you no longer feel suffering
five pebbles tells survivor and monk to go west.
west.
like in journey to the west? the great classical chinese novel, an allegorical journey about human perseverance?
in a game that is so incredibly difficult that beating it would require persistence?
was this intentional? did videocult know this? why haven't i seen anyone talk about this before?

“I thought I was supposed to be the old person in this relationship,” Toji’s voice rings out in the previously quiet atmosphere, makes your head whip up in surprise. your concentration is broken from your prior engagement, hands slowing as you can’t help the smile that grows on your face at his teasing.
“Crocheting is for any and all ages,” you snark back at him, taking in how he watches the way your hands still move rhythmically—yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over, pull through the last two, chain four, repeat. “You weren’t talking shit when I made you that sweater for your birthday.”
“Yeah I did, cause it itched like all hell.” He teases, makes you stick your tongue out at him playfully. he wore that sweater everywhere, to the point you damn near had to rip it off of him to put it in the wash. (the only times he didn’t wear it was when he knew he’d get it dirty while doing his…business ventures, which you didn’t mind. you’d rather he go a day without wearing it than googling how to wash blood out of a crocheted sweater that took you weeks to make.)
by the time you snap back to reality, Toji has already crossed the room, standing in front of where you sit cross legged in the comfy recliner he brought just for when you crocheted. it takes you aback by how quickly he moved, so silently, face suddenly warm as you look up at him from under your lashes. his eyes are dark, shadowed by his fringe, his hands in his pockets, his head cocked to the side. he looks devious.
“What are you cooking up in that pretty little head of yours?” you ask him, finally pausing your hands as you rest them in your lap. but Toji doesn’t let you, no. instead, he holds them back up in front of your face as he sinks to his knees in front of you, his smile wide and evil, pulling your legs from under you as he settles them on his shoulders.
“Don’t worry ‘bout it,” he croons to you, kissing the inner part of your knee, eyes still glued to your burning face. “Just keep doing your little old lady hobby while I busy myself.” without warning, he pulls your sleep shorts to the side, grinning when he’s met with the bare beauty that is your pussy. you shudder at the air that breezes past you, try to focus on chaining when he squeezes at your thighs with warm, veiny hands.
“But I can’t focus on counting my stitches when your face is between my legs.” you pout to him, hoping it’ll sway him to eat you out and then let you continue your project. but he doesn’t put his mouth on you until you start again, rewards you with a single wet, smacking kiss where you need it most.
“Guess you’re gonna have to learn how to multitask, sweetheart.” Toji grins before he licks a long stripe from taint to clit, your hands hiccuping in their movements. you can feel his smile more than see it, and come to the realization that he’s an evil, evil man. (you have to recount your stitches more than once, and even after you’re fucked out from euphoria and bliss, you still think you’re missing a few.)

Alright new Jason Todd headcanons in a dpxdc setting:
Danny is a "liminal" ghost, rather than a "half" ghost. He's alive and dead at the same time. (He's like Jesus Christ (in the church denomination I grew up in), fully ghost and fully human.) Danny, in human form, can go through a ghost shield, because he IS a living human.
Jason, however, is a reanimated corpse. He isn't a ghost, wouldn't have a ghost core, etc, he has a normal human system that runs ON ectoplasm. Jason CANNOT go through a ghost shield, because he is always an ectoplasmic entity. Danny can go through the Fenton Ghost Catcher and be split into a ghost and a human; if Jason went through the ghost catcher, he would straight up die.
(For my purposes I'm gonna say that Jason became an ectoplasmic entity upon his resurrection, but wasn't very stable. Dunking in the Lazarus pit stabilized his system but also poisoned his ectoplasm.)
I do think that Jason could learn certain ghost abilities if he learned to harness his ectoplasm, especially if they detoxed him off the Lazarus waters. He's probably already enhancing his stealth and strength in ways he hasn't really noticed. I think he's held back by the amount of physical matter he's lugging around, so maybe he couldn't fly, but I'm imagining temporary invisibility, or intagibility of like, a limb at a time. Maybe he can't walk through walls, but in a fight he can dodge by instinctively making the targeted part of his body intangible.
#i saw someone call jason a 'revenant' in a fanfic once and that is juicy as hell so I'm stealing that- that's what he is in this au#Jason's ectoplasm does react to other ectoplasmic entities so they can sense eachother#but for ghosts he's fucking weird because he doesn't have a core for them to resonate with or w/e#danny would probably think that he's another halfa/liminal at first but the more time they spend together the more that doesn't add up#so I know that I'm trying to give Jason ghost powers but honestly this whole thing is kind of a bum deal for him#he gets all of a ghost's weaknesses and barely any of the benefits#honestly I'm conceptualizing this as more of a disability than a superpower#discovering that youre less alive than you thought you were and you're technically just a walking talking corpse running on supernatural go#is fucked up and creepy and upsetting!#and it's something that he would have to come to terms with before he could start exploring what new opportunities it might give him#and i think that's really interesting#it's part of why I love messing with Jason in dpxdc stories so much#danny is fully ghost and fully human and he never feels like he fits in anywhere already#Jason is not quite human and not quite ghost so you can imagine how that would go for him#anyways i think they should be best friends and visit frostbite in the realms to make sure jason is healthy and also they should maybe kiss#and listen to the black parade together and talk about dying and stuff#danny fenton#jason todd#dp x dc#dpxdc#danny phantom#dc#batfam#my rambles#revenant jason todd

It's interesting to think about Master and Commander because it was clearly meant to work as a standalone book, which gives it a lot of curious little features when you compare it to later books, but none more than the fact that James Dillon was literally like a third main character there, and he brings out very specific dynamics with Jack and Stephen which none of the later books can ever quite get at. Like I genuinely believe that if there had not been a series, Dillon would have been a central character to all of our discussions, but as it is he's sort of faded into obscurity. Which is a shame, because he's really interesting, and one of the aspects of that book which is so fascinating is him and Stephen dealing with the fallout of the failed Irish Rebellion—the where-do-we-go-from-here, the fact that both of them are so completely politically incompatable in all other ways and now there's nothing to unite them, Stephen's idealism crashing into semi-ambivalence versus Dillon's fierce and continued belief (which is an interesting role reversal given their political stances otherwise), the weird camaraderie/animosity that exists between them, and so on—and I think that we never really get anyone who forces Stephen to be that politically nuanced again. Like I think Patrick O'Brian tries to nuance him but there's no character that ever really puts him through his paces in the same way, and honestly every time I think about that I get a bit sad.

One thing I think about a lot is that when Nargothrond falls, it is heavily implied that as good as everyone perished or, if not, got captured. Like, unlike with the Fall of Doriath, there is no mention at all of any refugees removing to the Mouth of Sirion - and yet, I assume that is very likely where Celebrimbor, at least, went? I definitely think he would have fought, but clearly he survived and neither Doriath nor Gondolin really were an option for him, and I doubt even more that he would have gone back to his family.
And there are a lot of implications to all that, but maybe the one that keeps me up most is that this means he would have likely been there when the refugees of Doriath arrived, when they told of what his family did. That his father is dead. What would he have been thinking? What would the survivors of Doriath been thinking? Like, I know there were technically several different camps to some extent, but I doubt they would have been wholly separate, especially upon arrival. What kind of horror to find someone who looks just like one of those guys who just slaughtered your friends and family. What kind of horror to look like someone who just committed such horrors.
He also would have been there when the third kinslaying occurred, or at least very close to it. What an experience, to end up on the other side of it. To see exactly what might have become of him had he not foresworn his father years ago, and also to see yet again what became of his family. Like yeah, everything before/during the Nargothrond Disaster would have already been formative for him and his future choices, but I do feel even being in the vicinity of all of that would have been such a dire reinforcement of all those convictions and reasons that made him disavow them in the first place. And especially in terms of the third kinslaying, it's also why I personally really doubt that there is a chance at any kind of reconciliation with any of the brothers, whether it's his father or I don't know, Maedhros or Maglor. Like, I just don't think there is any coming back fromt hat, really, if there ever was.
