“Tesni,” Ithadel repeated gratefully. His ashen complexion and the right arm still curled guardedly near his torso wouldn’t make Megan’s once-over particularly reassuring, despite his straightened posture, but he was now directing a worried frown of his own towards Tesni and didn’t notice her continued suspicion. “Y-yes. Of course. The fire will help. Thank you.”

Ithadel hadn’t seen much point in putting on the socks until he’d dried off at least a bit, but he carried them with him now as he finally moved to retrieve some of the towels. He hissed with quiet frustration as he dropped both them and a towel on his first attempt to pick anything up. His left hand was still clumsy with cold even as his skin began to prickle back to life in the heat of the room, and the right was very nearly unresponsive when he braved the pain of trying to use it. 

“I — I forgot as well. I… well, I suppose we did have, ah… other concerns,” Ithadel said in a thin, distracted voice, finally getting the towels draped over one shivering shoulder in a temporary carrying position. He retrieved the dropped socks and made his way to Tesni, his return smile apologetic and wan. “My name is Ithadel. I just moved here.”

The poor girl was shaking. Whether from cold, pain, or the aftermath of stress Ithadel didn’t know, but it was clear she was distressed and this situation was his fault. His voice softened. “I’m — truly very sorry about this, Tesni. I should have…” Ithadel faltered, shaking his head. 

He hardly knew where to begin; his regrets were an exhausted, wordless jumble. 

But ‘should’ wasn’t helpful just now and Tesni was leaning on the wall as if she needed its support. Ithadel hesitantly offered his good arm, nodding towards the hearth. “Regardless. Do... do you need any help?”

Swept up in the storm’s abrupt arrival and the need to bring the shivering man to safety, Tesni didn’t fully process the fact she’d gone inside as well until the door had shut behind them and Megan had given her a pair of socks. Ah. She hadn’t meant to stay. She had only meant to bring him to the doorstep.

A chill went through the selkie as she tried to pull on the socks. Meredith had knitted them herself, she knew, and charmed them to spread warmth through the body when worn. Her hands ached distantly. I’m not trapped, she reminded herself. This is a nice place, with good people. Her pulse thrummed in her ears, and Megan’s voice grew muffled beneath it. Tesni swallowed the lump in her throat and gazed through the narrow window in the door, toward the sliver of sea visible through the stormy gloom.

The sea. Home. She wanted to go home.

“Tesni. Her name’s Tesni.”

The sound of Megan saying her name reached Tesni. She shook her head, jostling the muddled haze from her mind, and blinked at Megan. “What?”

Megan’s brow furrowed with worry. She opened her mouth, closed it, then took a breath. “I’ll fetch the first aid,” she repeated at last. “Use the socks to apply pressure to your hands for now, to stop the bleeding.” Then, to both of them: “You’ll dry off faster by the hearth. Blankets are over there as well.”

With one last nod toward the hearth to emphasize her words — and one last uncertain glance at Ithadel, as though still searching him for wounds — Megan hurried up the spiral staircase and vanished onto the second floor. Muted footsteps thumped above them.

Tesni sighed and leaned back against the wall for support. Crimson slowly seeped through the socks balled in her shaky hands. She wasn’t trapped. This was fine. She gave Ithadel a tentative smile. “I’m sorry, I— I forgot to ask sooner… what’s your name?”

Or, the romantic comedy where Dean Winchester and Jo Harvelle are destined to get married, Castiel is given the task of playing matchmaker and fails terribly, the entire Heavenly Host becomes a sitcom audience, God warns against male pregnancy, and Jimmy Novak is incredibly unimpressed with angels in general.

somewhat of a fandom classic and the humor holds up wonderfully. a very silly fic completed with commentary from angel radio throughout the entire thing.

I think I’ve interacted w BNHA all this time cuz I’m so excited for the ending. It’s hilarious, I don’t even really have an attachment to any of the characters (except shigaraki and sum of the other villains) but I just really love how hori has set up the ending. I really really wanna see AFO and Yoichi backstory but I don’t think they’re gonna give AFO that much of a backstory since he’s supposed to die and be irredeemable. It’s just so fun to see what will happen and read everyone’s theories and see people talk abt the two characters I actually care abt. Regarding fight scenes, I will never forget when I first read MVA and got to see re destro vs shigaraki. I was like “WHAT?? HE TORE HIS HANDS OFF??? WHAT SHIGARAKI BACKSTORY?? OH MY GOD HES SMILING AND GIGGLING!?!?!?” That entire arc was so well put together and I was shigaraki starved for so long but my brain just imploded when I found out this arc existed (and then I waited two long years for it to get animated only for it to be treated like a side project). SPEAKING OF ART- oh my god the art. It’s gotten so much better over the existence of the manga like wow. I see old panels and I noticed the lines used to be so thin (and sort of rushed ig-?) and now you can tell how confident Hori is, the action scenes feel like they’re really moving the lineart is so bold and thick. This is getting long but in short I like BNHA because of the way the entire story has been set up to end and shigaraki. It was the first anime/manga I ever got into and I just know I’m gonna get all emotional once it ends, but that’s what I’m lookin forward to!!

Yes! Like I find it nice that even with people like yourself who don't have much of an attachment to the characters (aside from shiggy and the other character you like of course), there's still something that totally grabs you in because, like it or not, you want to know the ending! Even if it's bad or good or meh, there's still that question that hangs in the air about "How is this going to end?" and, if nothing else, that alone is what draws people in (It's The Mystery Of It All)

Personally, I think Hori has the capability to show us some really interesting AFO stuff. Judging by how Hori has outlined the whole thing about "you have done bad things and I will never forgive you for that but I still want to save you", that kind of complexity to the situation, I'm willing to bet that Hori has the potential to show AFO as fucked up as he already is but really round his character out, you know? Show his backstory (we still have a hanging question in the air of "was AFO always like this, even as a child, or did it all start when his quirk manifested?" so idk it'd be cool if we got the answer to that question) and such. I remain hopeful anyway

You can still have a character be irredeemable and die, but branch out their backstory as well, I believe, so uh. fingers crossed lol 🤞

And SAME for the MVA arc, it was just so amazing!! Just to learn more about the League but also the whole fight! And Shiggy laughing?? Ugh. Icing on the cake. That was probably the arc that got me to really like Shiggy, like full-on "this character has GRABBED my ATTENTION and now I want MORE"

I swear, one of the things Hori gets right with his slow burn is that Character Drought where you're wondering where tf your blorbo is and as soon as they get screen time or development, it's like you've been splashed with water and you come racing back for more (keep em waiting, keep em wanting - that's the writers rule lol)

I totally know what you mean about the art, like, to watch the style change over the years and see everything go from the rigid lines (idk how to put it either. like sharper and thinner?) to the bolder (bouncier) and sleeker ones is just very 👌👌👌

Yeah I think that nostalgia is gonna be very present. For everyone in the fandom, to some degree, but also for people like you who's first introduction to anime/manga was bnha! This Sudden-Need-for-Cohabitation Situation really drives home the point that Kota needs to attend the Adachi School of Dealing with Your Magically-Complicated Romance

No show has ever made me feel insane in this specific way before. It’s like I’m being gaslit about Kota being attracted to this guy. Every thirty seconds Kota internally monologues about how perfect Naoya is, and then pretends like he’s being forced by the universe to think gay thoughts 

I assume the motivation Naoya has for ignoring Kota so much is that he’s worried about moving too fast and scaring him 

Update from like 10 minutes later: “Or rather, I can’t hold myself back.” I KNEW it would be this comment exactly, Naoya is in every way, Discount Kurosawa. Also, this seems like a very common JDrama response 

“Laugh for me again.” “I can’t do it on command!” Okay, that’s cute, one (1) point to the writers

This scene has been quite A Lot and I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or say yikes but Naoya immediately waking up after being knocked unconscious and Kota screaming at Naoya’s nipples has really tipped the scales in favour of laughter 

“Are my muscles too much?” Oh yeah, Naoya, it’s your muscles that are the problem here 

“I bet he’s mad, for sure.” Nah Kota, I’m sure he gets punched and then nipple-screamed all the time

Yashiro is actually incredibly refreshing; it’s about time Kota has a friend, and maybe if Kota talks out his feelings about bad luck and boyfriends he’ll stop being so exhausting to listen to

It’s also interesting to me how sometimes being blond in shows is shorthand for “Existing Outside of Japanese Society’s Norms.” What would these shows do if someone had dyed their hair blue? They’d be losing their minds

I took advantage of such a kind, honest, guy.” This epiphany would have a lot more impact if he hadn’t had this exact same epiphany two episodes ago!!!! It doesn’t matter if you notice a behaviour is shitty if you continue to do it. The writing goes in circles. I feel like whoever submitted this script was high as hell:

“He is generous enough to share his luck with others. That’s why people love him. It’s not something anyone can do.” I love this about Naoya also 

Well, finally their classmates witnessed Kota acting like his regular unhinged self. The Bad Personality’s out of the bag. I’m glad! Plot progression, at least

Honestly, they haven’t even DEMONSTRATED any bad luck for the last two episodes. It makes the whole scheme seem even more unnecessary 

“I was lying and taking advantage of you, too.” FINALLLLLLLLLLLLLY KOTA

Wow, he really took accountability for all of the lying and scheming in one fell swoop. That was a pretty good apology. Also the fact it took so much circular writing to get here convinces me this should’ve been a movie instead of a 8-ep series. Take a note from S. Korea, boys, they throw together a series of 10 minute webisodes and compile it into a movie. Wish You did very well in that format

Somehow, also, the acting in this one scene has been better than any of the acting so far

This show has gotten like, 10x cuter since Kota started being honest with Naoya. Why couldn’t he have been like this the whole time? What was the point of him making him unbearably mean-spirited and up to his ears in internalized homophobia for four and a half episodes? What purpose did that serve? COULD’VE BEEN A MOVIE

“I’m glad it went well.” “What?” “It’s written all over your face.” Naoya’s friends are one of my favourite parts of this show

I assume now that the Kota finally is in an emotionally good place and ready to date Naoya, his bad luck will return and he’s gonna get hit by a bus or something

“Thank you.” “What for?” “You came over despite your bad luck.” Awwww I’m glad they can laugh about it now

“Mugi is in his own world and Saku lives by his own rules. I feel comfortable whenever I’m with them, because they don’t rely on others.” I love them laying the foundations of this friend group. Also putting Naoya in a suit really makes him seem more like an office worker than a student, he really has a face of indeterminate age

“Yes, [his] smile was exactly like Pome-chan, the Pomeranian I used to have.” I’m glad Naoya’s narration is furthering the point that he is also romantically insane, by comparing the people he’s attracted to to his dead dog. Equality:

Kota is trying very hard not to impose now that his apartment’s fixed, but Naoya is clearly hoping to build a ‘Would you like to stay for dinner?’ to ‘Would you like to stay forever?’ Pipeline 

Naoya is sooooooo earnest it kills me. I’m with Kota on this one:

“Hold on, what exactly are we doing tonight? I’m sure nothing will happen. A part of me is wishing for something... Wait, what?” How is Kota still surprised by his own gay thoughts

If I haven’t said so, Minato and Itsuki are very fun little background characters, they’re Kota’s friends too but Kota hasn’t quite learned how to be honest with his feelings around them 

Incredible how every one of these psychology lectures is mysteriously related to exactly whatever is going on Kota’s life

“Is there anyone you want to meet no matter how tired you are?” Kota looking at Naoya, and Naoya noticing and laughing is very cute

“I have one [person I want to meet].” “Who?” “Anna.” 👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 ARE ANNA AND MIKI GONNA BE IN LESBIANS TOGETHER? I HOPE SO. I’M SORRY I SPOKE ILL OF U EARLIER MIKI. KISS UR FRIEND, IT WOULD BE NICE <3

Kota raises a fair point, why DID Naoya kiss him when they first met?

“People I’ve dated loved it when I did that, so I thought you’d like it too.” LOL Naoya has just been sweeping all his partners into a big first kiss when they get together, and it’s always gone well!

Naoya is genuinely the only character in a JDrama I’ve ever seen explicitly talk about consent. Like sometimes they do play around with that issue but never has anyone stated it so clearly as he has, “I will kiss your lips when you consent.” I appreciate it 

“Shut up and give me your mouth!” I change my mind. They’ve immediately made it weird with Kota’s actions. Good lord 

Naoya’s response to Kota being weird about kissing him saying ‘no worries, I can wait,’ and then strength-training him so he’ll be less clumsy. Get you a boyfriend like Naoya

Also their couple’s at-home exercise montage was very fun 

This show was getting too normal and cute so they had to have someone hold Kota at gunpoint in his own home. Of course. 

“Come on, isn’t this too crazy?” Yeah, Kota, it really is

“I wanted to live longer, together with Naoya.” I appreciate the love in this sentiment and in all of Kota’s happy memories. However, this situation is still too much 

I would ask how Naoya slipped past so many cops and reporters, but he ain’t Good Luck Boy for nothing

“Take me as your hostage instead.” Does that really seem like a solution to you, Naoya?

Apparently, it was the solution. Colour me stupid:

This water gun-hostage situation is the exact reason most water guns on the market look so cartoonish. It’s just safer for everyone! 

“But ever since I met you, I realized I can enjoy my life for the first time.” Awww, Kota said regardless of his luck, that he likes his life because Naoya is in it

Naoya’s new strategy for keeping Kota safe is by asking him to live with him. Boy said I will be your Good Luck Shield 

“I’m really happy you’re caring for me. But I’m not with you to get rid of my bad luck.” You know what that is? Growth

“It’s thanks to my bad luck that I got to meet you. I’m truly grateful for that.” Kota is all about verbalizing his feelings now. I think it’s good for Naoya to hear this!

Naoya would like to clear the air about his own long-term interest in Kota and awareness of his personality, even if it’s not a bad sort of secret

“After seeing you, I realized that I avoided deep relationships with people, too. You and I are the same,” said Naoya, not realizing that was less of a reason for a relationship and more of a reason they should both be in therapy 

[Aggressively] “I’m with you because I really like you. So just stay with me and be my boyfriend like you wanted [softer] Oh... I, um,” [Naoya bursts into laughter] This is perhaps my favourite conversation they’ve had

Ahhhh I think it’s sweet that Naoya doesn’t care about his luck anymore. Maybe being with Kota is actually freeing in a way

“But I want to move in only when we really want to live together one day.” Good for Kota!!!!! He’s been so clear and direct about how much he cares for Naoya ever since his confession

(One last: It could’ve been a movie!!! For the road)

What an adorable ending to a tonally bizarre show. 6/10 stars:

I feel like this show needs a pro and con list, so here it is:

Pros

I like a quirky little supernatural premise, and I enjoyed how they subverted expectations by making Kota a rude little man 

Likeable side characters, I especially enjoy Mugi the fashion student who, I have found out after watching, is apparently played by someone who is trans and ace!! I don’t think I have ever seen an openly trans actor in Japanese media, so that makes my heart happy

Also I enjoyed how people showed how were able to get through their walls (Mugi and Saku to Naoya because they do not rely on other people, and Yashiro to Kota because he notices when something bothers him and doesn’t believe in luck, but what you do with it)

The last few episodes are SO good about communication. Even things that aren’t necessarily pressing issues in their relationship (like Naoya having noticed Kota before) they take the time to address so they can both be on the same page

Their apologies are so wholehearted, and they make sure you understand that even if Naoya knew about Kota’s façade or didn’t care about his motives, Kota cared about how Naoya was treated, by himself and others

They include a conversation about consent!! A clear, reiterated sentiment that consent is mandatory, without coded language

I really enjoyed the conversation about “someone you want to see no matter how tired you are” because it did feel like it was touching on a deeper form of intimacy. Favourite scene!

It becomes clear that they are actually both a compatible kind of bananas, so the lunacy feels balanced

I like how much they laugh together, especially how it leads to Kota being able to laugh at himself

I loved what they had to say about luck, and how you treat other people, regardless of your luck. It seems like they were able to pull out some good themes there

Cons

The beginning of the show feels so mean-spirited. Why does Kota constantly monologue about hard he has it emotionally is and how he only needs Naoya for personal gain, and eventually it just seems like his main regret is the fact he is having gay thoughts?

The writing feels so circular. Kota has an crisis of conscience and then it isn’t relevant again for two more episodes. He’ll say a bunch of stuff implying his strong attraction to Naoya, and then immediately we’ll regress two seconds later. It doesn’t make sense and it seems they didn’t have enough material for the length of the show so they just keep repeating things

I get that maybe this was to show Kota is struggling with his emotions, but it didn’t read like that! It read as a lack of consistency, because there wasn’t any emotional impact behind his revelations

Also like. Because there wasn’t any emotional impact to most of what happened in the first five episodes, the acting suffered for it. The actor chemistry is SO much better later on when their feelings MATTER and have an impact on the progression of the story 

Kota’s luck thing isn’t even that consistent, they straight up abandon it whenever it doesn’t serve them  

The consent thing is also used as a gag for Kota running away

I wish Yashiro had been a bigger part of the show! Given how he both allows Kota emotional honesty and helps him gain a new perspective on luck, I feel like having him in two scenes was underutilizing him. He could’ve been a part of the show from the beginning and it would’ve been stronger for it

No resolution for the Miki + Anna subplot - why bother to introduce it at all if it wasn’t going anywhere 

I saw post that was like ‘this show isn’t nearly good enough to lesbian bait me’ and I resonate with that (Found it!!)

While I think you can write a very good romance without any kissing, Kota’s fear of intimacy more reads as ‘we can be gay but not TOO gay’ rather than anything that serves the story. It is, for the most part, played for laughs in a way that also feels mean-spirited. Like in Cherry Magic, or Kieta Hatsukoi, we also never see them kiss, but they are allowed to feel attraction towards each other, you know? Aoki and Adachi explicitly desire physical intimacy with their partners, and the things that hold them back are unpacking internalized biphobia/first love nerves and Magical Power Problems, respectively, and that works!! If you had to go this very common route, you could’ve done better with it and the kiss in the beginning doesn’t make up for the clunky handling. If anything, the earlier kiss seems like it’s a gimmick or for shock value. Do better!!!

However, the cheek kiss at the end is cute, I’ll give you that! 

OH MY GOD. For a while I sincerely forgot that “kiss” is in the title. Of course it’s a gimmick. Geez. It’s THE gimmick. Which is worse, I think! 

All in all, it’s an adequate show that became a lot better as it went, but I think u could build a better show with a lot of the same ingredients. I want to make this show into soup

idk if you want to talk abt this so just delet if you don't lmao, but. i am new to the jjba fandom (not new to jjba) and i'm wanting to do some stuff for josuhan, but i didn't know there was so much hate? this isn't a question or anything i just. idk i just didn't know people were so violently opposed?

nah, i don’t mind talking about it! just be warned, it’s like 1am here for me so i might not make much sense ^^;;

the reason why josuhan is so violently opposed is mostly because of “anti-shippers”. since you’re talking to me abt it, you must have seen it around before – people telling us josuhan shippers we need to die or suffer severe bodily harm just because of what we ship. it’s fairly common and it really sucks.

antis, i believe, started out with good intentions. at least, that’s what they wanted to believe. they want to protect people from abusive relationships involving rape, incest, underage characters, etc. and i get that! it can make people really uncomfortable!

but the problem is, antis seem to believe that if you ship something that involves any of those concepts, it means you tolerate it in real life. and that is simply not true.

when you see hate directed towards you for shipping something, keep in mind that they’re not really hating on you – they don’t know you. they are hating on their perceived notion of you, the evil person who ships an underage character with an adult. they believe you not only condone it in real life, but that you would actively participate in relationships like that.

it’s really, really frustrating. to say the least.

the best advice i can offer you, as someone who has been in the jojo fandom for about two years (and the josuhan fandom for just as long) – it’s best to not engage with the people who hate you for your ships. they will never change their minds, they just want a hill to die on. they’ve found their hill in harassing strangers on the internet. i get it, i’ve been there, i grew out of it.

the best thing we can do is not listen to them. get rid of their platform. block them, mute their posts, ignore when they talk to you, etc. don’t engage. i know it’s a lot harder than it seems, and god knows i still have problems ignoring it too (especially when i get anon asks specifically about how people wish i would get mauled to death by wild animals because i ship josuhan, throwback), but the best thing for our own happiness is honestly just ignoring them. the antis will tire themselves out eventually if we just ignore ‘em.

i’m really sorry that your introduction to the fandom was in such a bad way ;; i know how much it sucks to see so much hate for something that you really like.

cons first

my biggest issue w/this movie was finn and poes plots. while they do get abt the same amount of screentime as rey smth just feels... very empty. poes plot is esp ooc and finns just... idk how to describe it other than empty? it left a lot to be desired 

the humor was weird??? like? sw is humorous yes but... it was very different. not in a good way. like yeah i snorted with the whole “i’m holding for hux” thing from poe bc i hate hux and that was a big mood but it felt very off for the film/universe. as did luke throwing the lightsaber. and some other moments i dont rlly remember

kylo ren shirtless scene was literally awful and as a lesbian i wanted to kms

holdo was??? so fuckin pointless oh my fuck literally every time she was on screen i just literally did not care

kylo being a fucking dumbass and not wondering how luke got a lightsaber when he literally just broke the thing in half but ig it’s p in character for kylo ren to not think for once in his life

shockingly bc i think im the first person to say this, luke’s characterization. the main complaints have been: a) regretted not killing vader b) considered/tried to kill kylo c) too cynical. now as someone whos a certified Luke Stan im gonna debunk these bc every one of those is down to misinterpretation or misquoting of scenes. a) he never said he regretted saving his father. in fact, he still has his kyber crystal from his saber hanging on a necklace in his hut. the conversation went like this. “the jedi have done awful things etc etc they created vader” “and you saved him” luke is not the one listing saving him as a mistake of the jedi. it’s rey countering that luke saving him was smth good the jedi did. and luke DOESN’T disagree. his only argument is that he regrets that it made him a “legend” which in turn lead to him being blinded to how dark kylo had gotten. which is honestly perfectly in character for luke. only he would feel bad for smth like that and beat himself up over it bc as usual hes a sunshine boy b) also didnt happen. when we see the scene from kylos pov, he mistells rey the story to make it seem like luke was some evil vengeful master. nope. he literally ignited his lightsaber for like 2 seconds bc he saw how many ppl kylo was going to kill before he realized what he was doing and went to turn off his saber but kylo had already seen. it’s also made clear later that while hes sorry abt what happened (which, cmon, this is luke. him feeling bad abt shit isnt an indication that its villainized. he apologized to an alien that didnt like him in anh) that he knows he was right and that kylo doesnt have good in him anymore. kylo was still the one who destroyed the order. rey was never mad at luke for trying to kill kylo simply for the sake that she felt “bad” for kylo. she was pissed that, from the distorted version kylo showed her, it seemed as if he’d “created” kylo who’d killed so many ppl.  c) okay yes hes cynical. but he doesnt stay that way. look. what have we seen from luke in the ot? we’ve seen him feel guilty over goddamn everything always and try and be a self sacrificing dumbass every second bc of that (i mean this in a very fond way i love my son). so when he blames himself for this shit, he tries to hide himself away so he doesnt fuck things up. we cant forget that while luke was a softhearted, emotional hero, he also had a lot of moments where he was cynical or annoyed (all of anh, dagobah, points in rotj). still, he overcomes that and realizes that he CAN still help and that the jedi are still needed. he talks about hope and is his same sweet self to leia and everyone else in the resistance. he also does have his sweet moments with rey.

moving on tho. holy shit the blatant parallels they drew with luke & leia and rey & kylo more than ever convinced me that they’re either siblings or cousins. him leading her into an answer of her parents being nobodies when shes already told him thats her biggest fear definitely isnt a concrete answer. like. they literally create the same scenes between rey & kylo and luke & leia. the weird ass hand scene thats been floating around also happens between luke and leia via the force. luke and leia communicate via the force more than once in the same way rey and kylo do. rey leaves in nearly the exact same manner to go to kylo as luke did when leaving dagobah to save leia. rey and leia also feel luke die via the force and they both see him in the same way rey & kylo and luke & leia have been seeing each other. if this were just a bond by snoke, that bond wouldnt exist between rey & luke & leia as well. i’m just saying y’all. luke was told his entire life growing up that his parents were nobodies and it’s stated outright in anh and yet look @ where we are now lads

rose was such a sweetie?? i didn’t love her introduction for reasons i’m sure youve all read by now but the rest of the movie she was a rlly good character and that hope sw is always about.

finn is called a hero who knows right from wrong and fights for whats right. finn is also given so many hero moments in the movie that got everyone in the theater cheering. he kills phasma. also, although dj does try and sell the whole “the rebels are just as bad as the first order” bullshit, finn calls him on it and fully proves just how bullshit that is. it’s definitely not the message of the movie.

finn and reys reunion oh gm yg od. that was so SWEET. she buried her face in his neck and he nuzzled her hair and they were both smiling and clinging to each other it was real blessed. rey also keeps asking abt finn and finn keeps asking abt her and honestly i feel god in this chilis tonight

the only good thing kyle did in this movie was force throw hux against a wall and knock him out bc hes annoying and i might hate kyle but god what a big goddamn mood

Dean is an Abuser - Analysis

(tw: abuse, parental abuse, father abuse)

Note: Before anyone is like “Jenna u hav no idea wht ur talking abt” I am victim of parental, in this case fatherly, abuse. I just don’t want people to think I don’t know what I’m talking about and think I’m flinging the word “abuse” all around willy nilly. So LETS GO

I love! Long Exposure! So much! Mars is AMAZING at storytelling, pacing, and her characters are so easy to love? I love them? She’s amazing, please go tell her that!!

And now while all of us Love Mitch, Jonas, Sid, etc there is the Other spectrum with characters like Dean and Neil that we’re SUPPOSED to hate! And Mars is doing a spectacular job showing how the audience is Not supposed to side with them.

But, from an outsider perspective that doesn’t know subtle signs of abuse, I can understand why it doesn’t click right away that Dean is supposed to be an abuser. While there are those who dislike him, I sense some hesitancy calling Dean a downright abuser, and well STRAP IN because he is.

ALSO DIDN’T PROOF READ IT CAUSE I’M LAZY

Warning for some spoilers too if you haven’t caught up to the comic.

I’m aware that people may have “expectations” when hearing the word abuse. Furthermore, parental abuse, and usually, it’s associated with Physical Abuse. Which yes! It is a type of abuse that some children, unfortunately, go through. But there is more than just one type of abuse which branches off into Dean’s abuse, which is emotional, psychological, and verbal.

I’m gonna state this right now- Abuse isn’t a competition. Just because there are “much more worse cases” of abuse, that doesn’t mean anything. No victim should be seen as less just because someone else “had it worse.” The fact that abuse happens at all is terrible and it shouldn’t turn into a game of “but my experience was worse than this.”

So with that in mind, let’s talk about Dean, his need to be in control, and his verbal/emotional/psychological abuse. Lets go to when we first are introduced to him

Our first real appearance of Dean takes place in the morning, after. Dean repeatedly calls for Jonas but gets no answer in return, in that way, Jonas is not complying and answering to Dean.

He is not being compliant and then we get this scene. Dean shoves Jonas to get his attention, then continuously berates him. I think it’s a scene a lot of us forget about because it’s one of the first few pages.

“Did you hear me calling you? Or were you just too lazy to answer?” - the significance of this line shows a lot of Dean’s personality already. He wants to be answered to, he doesn’t like when people aren’t obedient around him. He doesn’t outright say Jonas is lazy but he plants the idea in his head that he is. He’s angry that Jonas didn’t answer him, which means Dean lost control for a moment but he regains it by verbally berating Jonas. Basically stating “you listen to me.” WHICH, IS NOT GOOD PARENTING.

“After all I’ve done for you and your sister? You think it’s easy?” - ohh man here comes to guilt trip. Dean is being manipulative with this line. He’s playing the “I’ve done so much for you and this is how you treat me?” card. He is making Jonas feel guilty, talking down at him, silently calling him ungrateful while also putting himself on a higher pedestal. It’s not rash to translate his words to “I’ve done everything for you and your sister and you’re being a selfish ungrateful brat. It’s so hard doing this but I do it anyways so you give me respect.” Manipulative, guilt tripping, and berating, all signs of abuse.

“Answer me when I’m talking to you.” - while outside perspectives may not see this as a threat, people that have a grasp of abuse signs do see it as one. It’s a demand, and it has an underlying tone of being threatening.

There’s also the body language and artistic choice of clearly making Dean seem taller, bigger, a powerful presence that disturbs the atmosphere, while Jonas is weak, doesn’t look Dean in the eye, overall submissive and it’s a very unhealthy dynamic between father and son.

So our first page with Dean we already know; he’s a dick. Lets look further.

At the end of Chapter 1, Jonas receives a text message from Dean which makes him leave hastily.

Why is this so important?

Maybe I’m reading too much into it but this really resonated with me. The artistic choice of the panels spoke louder than words.

The beginning panel displays a message that Jonas is getting, but it’s very close up, it shows significance. Something abrupt, a disturbance.

Then the second panel, honestly, it could have done without it but the fact that it’s there is another big shot in the chest. We get Jonas’s expression, worried when before he was angry, so the shift in mood is prevalent and important. But it also arises a question, what made Jonas go from angry to instantly worried, and upset.

The third panel displays the message. “home. NOW.” And as someone with an abusive parent, those messages are Terrifying. It is a demand, no other questions asking of your well being or where you are, it is a demand to make you come home. It inflicts fear on the victim, telling them to immediately get out of there before it gets worse.

And the obliviousness of Mitch is particular painful because usually, outsiders don’t know what kind of fear your abusive parent has flooded you with in less than three words. But it’s equally gorgeous storytelling, and very beautiful showing how Dean is clearly in control and superior to Jonas.

While brief, I still like this panel a lot because it shows another element to Dean. Sure, sometimes kids go out and are in places where they shouldn’t be without their parents knowledge.

And yes, this does allow room for some kind of punishment I don’t like how unsettling this is. Jonas was off with Mitch, yes, they were breaking into a research facility HOWEVER, no one else knew that. It was supposed to be a “gathering information for a science project” kinda deal.

He wasn’t at some wild party, or doing stupid shit (besides trespassing and hopping a fence but no one knew that) But still, if you don’t tell Dean where you are, even if it’s to do a project, he’ll inflict fear and most likely punish you for not doing so.

AKA a huge dick.

So we already have signs of him verbally abusing Jonas by manipulating him, subtly calling him lazy, and giving him commands like “answer me if i’m talking to you” and “home. NOW.”

But lets be real.

We really wanna get into Chapter 3, where the abuse is so clear it’s painful. And I’m not talking about the dinner just yet.

RING THE ALARMS!!!

This!! IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Jonas is actually talking about Dean in a negative light, he acknowledges that he isn’t the best dad but I love how he talks about him. He downplays Dean’s actions.

He starts off strong, “I know what it’s like to have a crappy dad” but quickly redacts it with uncertainty. He’s not taking back the statement but he’s also unsure about this opinion, undecided that Dean is a crappy dad, or if he’s normal and just so happens to be “pretty harsh.”

And this line, “He adopted me when nobody else wanted me though, so maybe I owe him.” THAT FOLKS, IS THE CAUSE OF DEAN’S MANIPULATION, PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE, AND GOAL AT IT’S FINEST.

We’ve seen from the beginning pages how Dean plays the “I’ve done so much for you” card and makes Jonas out to be the bad guy. Dean always compliments HIMSELF,  making him out to be such a great person who was there to father Jonas, and Jonas is the one being ungrateful. He’s psychologically conditioning Jonas to think Dean is superior and he is inferior and should respect him. 

Jonas believes he Owes Dean and WOOP, THAT’S NOT HOW PARENTING WORKS!! The child never owes the parent for BEING a parent, but Dean has conditioned him to believe that he should!

Moving on,

YYYYIIKKEESSS

What I adore here the most is how BRILLIANT mars executed Mitch meeting Dean for the very first time!!

The atmosphere changes DRASTICALLY. The page before was a bit more lighthearted, lighter shades of grey, and a background, but upon Dean entering, everything changes.

The children that were all mulling about having fun stop and look at Dean. Jonas and Mitch doing the same. They’re all turning to the one who is Superior. Dean is showing dominance, he is the control freak that changes the mood wherever he goes because he demands it.

And in the second panel it displays that even MORE with the dark colors, lack of background, and the intense gaze Dean shows. He is big, unapproachable, and clearly evil. Maybe a stretch but still, it’s an amazing introduction to a bad guy.

This part breaks my heart a lot because Dean doesn’t have to say Anything to make Jonas start talking.

Victims of abuse tend to try to explain themselves, A Lot. They try to explain their actions, why somethings the way it is, who they’re with, they ramble off immediately with their abuser not even having to say a word, instead just give them a look that has them panicked.

Jonas is starting to panic, he’s fearful of Dean, he doesn’t want to upset him and he wants to make sure if He’s okay with it.

What Dean is saying doesn’t sound... Threatening if you got it out of context.

It could be a genuine question from a curious parent but the way Dean is saying it, showing it, and expresses it, is very negative. But still, it’s a very causal question that Jonas feels the need to ramble about it Again.

Victims of abuse feel the need to explain themselves always, I can’t stress this enough.

It’s never “Oh yeah, we’re doing a project on the flood.” or “Yup, we were assigned as partners, that’s how the teacher does it.” Jonas has to go into detail, explaining what the project is, where he was, and why he was there, it can’t ever be a simple answer because Dean won’t condone that;.

Not only that, but Jonas feels the need to Apologize for his behavior that didn’t need an apology! He’s so quick to believe Dean, thinking that what he’s saying is right and what he’s doing is wrong! It’s conditioning caused by psychological abuse!!!

You start to believe someone when they say it repeatedly to you because it becomes ingrained!!!

- HOMOPHOBIC!!!!!!!!!!! SHAMING JONAS!!!!! SHAMING BOTH JONAS AND MITCH AT THE IDEA THEY MIGHT BE MISTAKEN AS A COUPLE!!!!!!!!!!

I love how this is ALSO disguised as a “I know better than you” shtick because it’s something abusive parents use all the time.

“I just want you to be safe! People are gonna think something’s up!” Making Jonas believe that Dean wants what’s best for him but that’s not the case. He’s being abusive, taking control, and trying to make Jonas who he wants to be.

Dean says it himself, hiding his insults, demands, and being a TOTAL DICK behind this idea of “looking out for Jonas”

Again, he’s trying to make it seem like his word is superior, it should be followed, respected. He makes himself out to be Good which is some of the most Scariest abusers out there.

They seem so... Nice. So normal, and regular, they seem like true genuine parents that are looking out for their kids. You don’t notice his need for control and wanting to make others inferior because he hides it behind this message of being a good father.

Thankfully, Mitch doesn’t buy into it cause he’s seen this all before with his own abusive stepdad!!

When Mitch calls Dean out he has just disrupted the equilibrium of an abuser.

Dean who everyone’s looked up, respected out of fear of judgement, followed his every word, and was silent when he was talking has just been talked back to and he doesn’t know how to handle it.

Everyone looks at Mitch in shock because NO ONE has ever had the guts to talk back to Dean, the one who is in power. He is in control, and it’s painfully obvious so Mitch disrupting this balance is unsettling.

Jonas immediately tries to change subjects then goes so far as the grab Mitch and take him to his room. Sue tries to calm down Dean by calling him “dear.” Why? In this case, Mitch... Even though said very harshly, is in the right.

But the Victims are terrified of the abuser when he gets angry. They try to diffuse the situation because they don’t want outsiders getting to see the man that is Dean.

Either believing they “won’t understand’ are so conditioned and psychologically abused to believe they must not let anyone see their abuser being abusive, making apologies and excuses for them and trying to leave the scene.

I’VE BEEN WANTING TO TALK ABOUT THIS FOR 5 YEARS OKAY!!!

After Dean walks in on Mitch and Jonas, Dean doesn’t say Anything. He looks at them with a shocked face and then slams the door shut.

Let’s think of this scene in a different light. A parent walks in on their kid and their “friend” in a compromising position. In a fit of embarrassment for all parties, the parent slams the door shut because OH MY GOSH I JUST DID THAT!!!

Well, that doesn’t fit the bill for this because Jonas reacts with Fear.

Jonas very quickly is thrown in a panic. Dean didn’t even have to say ANYTHING but Jonas knows hes in trouble and he’s gonna suffer the consequences. He wants Mitch to leave as soon as possible not because he’s angry with Mitch but because he’s Scared of what Dean might do to him.

This may seem weird but often times.... Victims of abuse don’t really... Want outside help in the heat of a moment.

They don’t want to make anyone experience the wrath of their abusive parent. It’s a need to protect others for not witnessing what the victim goes through every day and a lot of the times, a victim feels Embarrassed by their parents actions and want to hide them away, deal with it themselves. He makes Mitch leave because of this.

sunwoo was born in san francisco !! he grew up alongside his older brother -- they’re three years apart. his parents were relatively conservative, but for the most part they let sunwoo do his own thing ! they actually put more ‘ effort ’ into raising his older brother, and with his success, anything sunwoo did kind of went unnoticed. sunwoo realized this rather early on, n he decided life was too short to try living up to all that his brother was doing, u know ? it wasn’t like his grades were terrible n he was a bad kid -- his grades were average n he snuck out only a few times ! he was a ‘ typical kid™ ’

when he was seven, sunwoo had his first asthma attack ; it scared him bc before then, he wasn’t even aware he had asthma ?? he just thought he was a healthy kid. he remembers his chest feeling really tight nd coughing a lot n looking v pale -- he was trembling when his friend took him to the school nurse, but that’s about all he can recall. he was taken to the doctor’s and was diagnosed with asthma and due to his forgetful nature,, sunwoo didn’t often take his medication, n his condition worsened :// he uses an inhaler now, n goes out of his way 2 avoid things that trigger his asthma bc he’s smartened up a bit 

sunwoo had trouble holding down jobs tbh,, n one night when he was scrolling through random websites,, he stumbled across a cam site ( don’t ask him how ! ) nd he ended up becoming really fixated on the idea of performing in front of a camera,, pleasuring not only himself but giving pleasure 2 others -- just through a screen. he managed 2 set up his laptop in a way that he only filmed his body, nd before he knew it, sunwoo was performing his own show 4 a small audience ?? ( he was eighteen at the time ! ) he made sure 2 keep his face hidden -- tho as he grew more comfortable,, he switched from hiding his face entirely, to wearing a mask that concealed the lower half of his face !! that allowed 4 a more personal experience in his opinion ?? soon enough his audience grew, nd he’d be lying if he said the praise didn’t please him ! that nd the money’s wonDERFUL ? 

his family moved 2 south korea when he was nineteen ( v close to twenty ! ) basically bc his mother’s sister fell gravely ill, nd they wanted 2 be around her nd spend time with her while the could. sunwoo didn’t mind, he wasn’t in school at the time n he skypes his friends all the time anyway, so he adjusted fairly quickly. he just struggles with the language a lot,, but he’s learning !! he did start attending school when he moved to korea tho, nd is currently majoring in astrology ! his brother was the only one who didn’t move to korea btw,, he’s still attending uni in the us -- he’s training 2 be a doctor bc he wants to save people !
