Ushi’s Retaliation Against the Twins

After Ikkaku was rescued from the woods as a child, Gramps demanded full custody of not only her, but the twins Fukuro and Nausagi. However, their mother refused, saying that Tomasu could take Ikkaku because he clearly cared more about her than he ever did his own daughter, but she wouldn’t give up any of her sons, refusing to admit it was her own negligence and pride that had nearly gotten her youngest killed and that her oldest wasn’t the perfect child everyone believed him to be.

Unfortunately, this resulted in the twins having no refuge from Ushi’s revenge against them for ruining his plan to kill their baby sister. He beat up both boys, but badly broke Fukuro’s right arm.

For two days the twins tried to hide their injuries, with Nausagi splinting Fukuro’s arm as best he could despite being only 11 and sneaking down from their room to fetch food and water, but they were eventually forced to go to their parents to get the break treated by a doctor. Neither were willing to say how the break happened, fearing more retaliation and knowing that no one would stop Ushi - after all, it had taken their parents three days to realize Ikkaku had gone missing, so why would their own potential disappearance be any different?

However, because of the time it took to get the arm treated and the fact that the family could only afford one of the cheaper Dunwich doctors instead of one from Arkham, Fukuro’s arm never fully healed. It’s functional, but slightly misshapen with a noticeable bump when his sleeve is rolled up. It also made Nausagi significantly more protective of him, even as adults, often insisting on doing the manual labor while Fukuro took over the bookkeeping when they started their carpentry business. The people of Dunwich found it easy to ignore as Shiokaze insisted long sleeves be worn at all times, and by the time they were considered adults everyone believed it was a childhood prank gone wrong.

Eventually, long after Ushi left Joras to become a Marine, the two did start to mentally heal from the event, to the point where Nausagi even named his daughter after Ikkaku, whom Fukuro utterly dotes on, as their personal reminder that despite the long-term consequence, they did the right thing getting help for their sister and they held no resentment towards her. They also reconciled with Gramps, building their own houses close to the lighthouse and helping him with maintenance as he got older, preparing to possibly take over if needed some day.
