the topic is a bit top of mind rn so it could be a bit of recency bias but im rereading the fifth season and the fantasy swearing really is jarring. i wonder how much of it is due to the translation as well
#different languages simply have different vibes to swear words idk#and its particularly noticeable how weird the sentence structure gets with the fuck stand-in#bc we just dont use it the same way#in particular we dont use fucking as an intensifier very often (if at all?)#if we use idk 'dez fodendo reais' (ten fucking reais) its specifically as a joke on a literal translation of english#so its not 'natural' or widespread. its just not a sentence structure that exists. and yet there it is on the book#i mean it might be too much to ask that the translator goes through all that fucking trouble (<- sentence that doesnt work in portuguese)#of reworking swears to that extent but i can still complain about it nevertheless !#(btw now that i think of it that sentence dos work as 'trabalho fodido' - so like. fucked as an adjective is a thing. but thats not used in#the book as far as i have seen (im at page ~100))#(but then again thats not an intensifier just a descriptor. you still cant say dez reais fodidos its nonsense)#(unless like its one of those bills thats been through countless bars and looks like shit. yknow describing the bill itself)#(and in any case its just a long word that gets used. enferrujado / ferrugento. idk how it is in the og but thats too many syllabes)#(god syllabes is a hideous word)
