The virus was genetically engineered by Zeus and Athena for population control

It was originally a fully contained and controlled virus only administered by Olympian officials who then took meticulous care to ensure it didn't spread

A small containment breach found that Zeus' children, Thalia and Jason, were immune to the virus, which urged him to run a few tests on the elder of the two to pinpoint which gene they carried that gave them the immunity, unsuccessfully

Meanwhile, Alabaster was subjected to countless tests from his father in order to engineer his own immunity/cure

This was believed unsuccessful until Olympian headquarters were breached and the public was exposed to the virus which spread like wildfire, leaving very few untouched

Without access to the true virus, his father was forced to run hypothetical tests until the breach when he got his hands on an infected, the experiments continued on until the infected got loose and killed him

The infected ended up biting Alabaster a few times, which led him to finding out that his fathers experiments were successful and he was immune
