what is paper girl? and why do u like it so much?
OOH OK. so paper girls is like, two things- in like... 2022??? idk, amazon released a paper girls tv show that got cancelled after one season, which i have watched 5/8 episodes of, but before it was a tv show it was a comic series.
a really, really good comic series in my opinion.
the first issue was released in 2015, and the last was in 2019, with the entire series spanning 30 issues exactly. the way i initially read it was split into 6 volumes, and i now have a heavy ass complete collection of all the comics (my most prized possesion)
obviously, im a bigger fan of the comics than the show. i think the show generally has a bigger fandom, but the comics hold a special place in my heart, and by that i mean its the only thing left in my chest cavity.
plot wise its hard to explain without spoiling a bunch. a lot of people don't like paper girls bc its confusing or weird, or whatever. i remember when i first read through them all i did it in one night, at like 2 am, and by the end my brain felt like it was melting out of my ears, and it was the best feeling ever. i've been chasing the magic ever since.
the basic premise is that its a story about time travel initially set in 1988, following 4 girls, kj, mac, erin, and tiffany. all of them are 12 years old and work on delivering for their local newspaper, hence the name paper girls. on one morning (november 1st, dubbed 'hell morning' because its right after halloween and everyone is fucking crazy) they get caught up in some... really weird shit, and Plot happens.
i've read through the whole series like, 7 times now, so i am no longer confounded by the story, and it's prolly my favourite book/comic/piece of media, like, ever, because personally, i love weird and confusing sci-fi that i genuinely don't understand. it hits me in a certain part of my brain.
also, all of the characters are so likeable. their interactions and dynamics are hilarious to me, and i adore all of them so much. i think even for people who don't really like the main story, the characters can be a real high point of the comics.
also, art wise, it's fucking gorgeous. Matt Wilson and Cliff Chiang did such an incredible job with it, the colours and the linework are incredible. i recently took my physical copy of the comic to my art teacher just to gush about how pretty it is, and even a lot of the bad reviews for the series i've found say something along the lines of "i have no idea what happened, but it was really cool to look at,"
it can definitely be rough around the edges at times, with some homophobic, anti semitic and abelist slurs thrown in the mix (although these are always framed as being like, not good things to fucking say) but even with it's flaws, it will still forever have a hold on my brain.
ouaghhhh it makes me crazy. i am insane. paper girls made me crazy. i need to be sedated. fuck.
to round out my ramblings here's some of my favourite panels from the first few issues of the comics- enjoy

for me - given aziraphale's rather lackluster reaction to being given it, and the promotion, in the first place - aziraphale just kept the medal on display for appearances' sake. especially if check-ins from gabriel and sandalphon were relatively frequent between 1800 and 2019. and after s1, there was just no reason to have it out anymore - that it now just gathers dust in the far back corner of a drawer in aziraphale's desk, happily forgotten about in the wake of no longer needing to pretend that he's heaven's man (so to speak).

For those who wonder where Aziraphale’s medal from the bookshop opening scene ended up :).
Edit - S2 update: The statue no longer has the medal in S2 :)

by the way irt boycotting sanrio the fact that they had stores open in "Israel" in 2011 is no longer particularly relevant (theyre closed), the important thing is that their products (specifically the plushies) are made by jazwares which has a wildly zionist ceo
so rather than a sanrio boycott it's a jazwares boycott which applies to a lot of popular plushes: sanrio, pokemon, squishmallows, etc.

Making Incorrect H:SR Quotes Until I Run Out of (hopefully) Original Ideas - Pt. 4 - Nuthin' but Boothill Edition

Argenti mentioning him was Interesting but i need More. I love how you draw Grim the size of a small cat. It genuinely blows my mind that according to the game he's actually approximately 70 cm tall... Like, Ortho is 148 cm. That's only two Grims! If Grim stands on Ortho's head, they'd be just a bit taller than Malleus (who is 202 cm and I'm not sure that's counting the horns)! The proportions are just so wild to try to imagine realistically... (and I do like the small cat Grim take more, it's very endearing)
every time I remember Grim is actually supposed to be the size of, like, a medium-to-largeish dog, and then I just...draw him cat-sized anyway. I also think it's cuter that way! 🤷 (let's just say he's not allowed to ride the servant unless he takes the shrinking potion first.)
ultimately I figure we all get a little artistic license in our fanart, and mine are:

Would the Hazel puppet we see in a few of the shows episodes be a kind of very basic changeling? Its obviously made out of way less unwishes than Chimmy but the similarities are too striking to be ignored.
Tumblr media
YES! YES IT ISS.
Hazel's puppet is a very basic changeling. So basic, that it's only purpose is to complete one specific set of actions. When those actions are done, it disappears! It's quite literally and physically a sock puppet.
The differences between Hazel's changeling and Timmy's changeling is that their lifespans and construction is different. They serve different purposes.
Bitties Series: [Start] > [Previous] > [Next]
More information about changelings that's ultimately just world building ramblings. Lotsa paragraphs.
Hazel's changeling is short lived, low on unwishes, and more specific to the job.
Her changeling is a one-and-done tool. It only has to do one thing. "Distract the Teacher." "Distract the Mother." So it doesn't need a lot of unwishes, it just needs enough to do its job! As a result, it is made of low quality cloth, it can't verbalize, and it doesn't make its own actions.
Hazel's changeling favors Perceptional Magic. This is why Mr. Guzman doesn't recognize that Hazel's changeling isn't Hazel. He can't see that it's made of felt and sticks. It's constantly pooling out perception magic to warp how its being viewed.
For this reason, the changeling doesn't actually need as much connections as Timmy's does. It can exist by itself, or with Hazel, so long as it has just enough Unwishes to keep it alive. Maybe not stable, but, alive.
By contrast, Timmy' changeling is on the opposite end of this spectrum.
Timmy's changeling is a continuous tool. It must persist and adapt and grow. "Go to school" "Get a job" "Find a partner". It needs many unwishes to face many situations and scenarios. So the changeling has a more difficult build.
The magic it favors is different. Timmy's changeling requires Environmental Magic. People see it for how it looks. It has human skin and can speak the human tongue. But what it requires is a suitable environment. Otherwise, people will know it for what it is. Wooden and hollow.
The more developed and high-tech the Changeling is, the less it's recommended for it to see it's real counterpart. The bigger the amount of Unwishes, the more you want it to be stable and calm. Especially when that changeling's job is "Be Human".

yoooo!!!!! omg thats so fun thanks for telling me about that!!!
Tumblr media
i believe they lose it with the line "the doctor, vanquisher and sworn enemy of the sontarans, former president of gallifrey, is in the crimea" which as i heard it was: "le conquérant docteur, ennemi juré des sontariens, ancien président de gallifrey" (if theres a mistake in that sorry my french is not fluent still getting there) because, well i think because they already pick a side with ancien président but maybe thats used for female presidents too i dont know that. but they definitely pick a side when they end the line "il est ici en crimée"
unless the end of the line is "y est ici en crimée" but my french isnt good enough to know if thats a grammatically correct sentence; le conquérant docteur, ennemi juré des sontariens, y est ici en crimée. it seems to me like that doesnt make sense since youve got the en crimée so whats the y doing there. but you tell me!

hey in ur peri animatic: (https://youtu.be/OCqlRuDaXYU?si=K52WDu_vw9rg7chz) that I have been permanently obsessed over since today and have watched about 20 times by now so much that I have drawn & posted stuff based on it what was that partial bug form peri had?
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched either of the show btw so if it’s explained in the show please tell me plsssss
OK, SO the bug thing is not technically canon to the series. It's based on my own headcanons for fairy biology, but i do have justifications for it!! Fairies have very strong shape-shifting abilities, so it would make sense that the form they show to humans isn't necessarily their true form(not to mention extreme that mimicry is very common in insects). And you want to know the visible traits almost every fairy has in common? Being very small with Insect-like wings.
The fact that their humanoid form isn't their true form in actually confirmed in the show! Cosmo and Wanda are revealed to look like biblically accurate pseudo-angels in the museum episode. (I say pseudo angels because the Flaming Sword of Eden is only debatably sentient and I don't think is considered an angel. Ophanim are also debatably not angels because they don't have wings (sorry for the angel tangent I like angels))
Tumblr media
So wouldn't their true forms be angelic then? Well, yes. But I like bugs so. Also I have more headcanons to justify myself. I like to think that they have both a true-true form (incomprehensible to the human brain, probably exists mostly in a dimension invisible to us, that looks how we imagine biblically accurate angels), and a fairy form (which is visible to humans but is naturally very insect like and tends to scare people). So, in order to interact with humans, they have to learn to shapeshift into a humanoid form but will occasionally slip if they get too relaxed/aren't careful, hence the mandibles coming out when he yawns!
The reason they struggle so much more with human forms than the animals or objects they typically turn into is that, well, they aren't trying to convince those animals or objects. The more human they try to look, the harder it is to keep up convincingly. If you turn into a really uncanny squirrel, only other squirrels will notice. If you turn into a really uncanny human, they form a lynch mob and burn you at the stake.

In my Zeus bag today so I'm just gonna put it out there that exactly none of the great Ancient Greek warrior-heroes stayed loyal and faithful and completely monogamous and yet none of them have their greatness questioned nor do we question why they had the cultural prominence that they did and still do.
Jason, the brilliant leader of the Argo, got cold feet when it came to Medea - already put off by some of her magic and then exiled from his birthland because of her political ploys, he took Creusa to bed and fully intended on marrying her despite not properly dissolving things with Medea.
Theseus was a fierce warrior and an incredibly talented king but he had a horrible temper and was almost fatally weak to women. This is the man who got imprisoned in the Underworld for trying to get a friend laid, the man who started the whole Attic War because he couldn't keep his legs closed.
And we cannot at all forget Heracles for whom a not inconsiderable amount of his joy in life was loving people then losing the people around him that he loved. Wives, children, serving boys, mentors, Heracles had a list of lovers - male and female - long enough to rival some gods and even after completing his labours and coming down to the end of his life, he did not have one wife but three.
And y'know what, just because he's a cultural darling, I'll put Achilles up here too because that man was a Theseus type where he was fantastic at the thing he was born to do (that is, fight whereas Theseus' was to rule) but that was not enough to eclipse his horrid temper and his weakness to young pretty things. This is the man that killed two of Apollo's sons because they wouldn't let him hit - Tenes because he refused to let Achilles have his sister and Troilus who refused Achilles so vehemently that he ran into Apollo's temple to avoid him and still couldn't escape.
All four of these men are still celebrated as great heroes and men. All four of these men are given the dignity of nuance, of having their flaws treated as just that, flaws which enrich their character and can be used to discuss the wider cultural point of what truly makes a hero heroic. All four of these men still have their legacies respected.
Why can that same mindset not be applied to Zeus? Zeus, who was a warrior-king raised in seclusion apart from his family. Zeus who must have learned to embrace the violence of thunder for every time he cried as a babe, the Corybantes would bang their shields to hide the sound. Zeus learned to be great because being good would not see the universe's affairs in its order.
The wonderful thing about sympathy is that we never run out of it. There's no rule stopping us from being sympathetic to multiple plights at once, there's no law that necessitate things always exist on the good-evil binary. Yes, Zeus sentenced Prometheus to sufferation in Tartarus for what (to us) seems like a cruel reason. Prometheus only wanted to help humans! But when you think about Prometheus' actions from a king's perspective, the narrative is completely different: Prometheus stole divine knowledge and gifted it to humans after Zeus explicitly told him not to. And this was after Prometheus cheated all the gods out of a huge portion of wealth by having humans keep the best part of a sacrifice's meat while the gods must delight themselves with bones, fat and skin. Yes, Zeus gave Persephone away to Hades without consulting Demeter but what king consults a woman who is not his wife about the arrangement of his daughter's marriage to another king? Yes, Zeus breaks the marriage vows he set with Hera despite his love of her but what is the Master of Fate if not its staunchest slave?
The nuance is there. Even in his most bizarre actions, the nuance and logic and reason is there. The Ancient Greeks weren't a daft people, they worshipped Zeus as their primary god for a reason and they did not associate him with half the vices modern audiences take issue with. Zeus was a father, a visitor, a protector, a fair judge of character, a guide for the lost, the arbiter of revenge for those that had been wronged, a pillar of strength for those who needed it and a shield to protect those who made their home among the biting snakes. His children were reflections of him, extensions of his will who acted both as his mercy and as his retribution, his brothers and sisters deferred to him because he was wise as well as powerful. Zeus didn't become king by accident and it is a damn shame he does not get more respect.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#It's Zeus Apologist day actually#For the record Jason is my personal favourite of these guys#The argonauts are extremely underrated for literally no reason#And Jason's wit and sheer ability to adapt along with his piousness are traits that are so far away from what usually gets highlighted#with the typical Greek warrior-hero that I've just never stopped being captivated by him#Conversely I still do not understand what people see in Achilles#I respect him and his legacy I respect the importance of his tale and his cultural importance I promise I do#However I personally can't stand the guy LMAO#How do you get warned twice TWICE both by your mother and by Athena herself that going after Apollo's children is a bad idea#And still have the audacity to be mad and surprised when Apollo is gunning for Specifically You during the war you're bringing to His City#That You Specifically and Exclusively had a choice in avoiding#ACHILLES COULD'VE JUST SAID NO#I know that's not the point however so many other members of the Greek camp were simply casualties of Fate in every conceivable way man#Achilles looked at every terrible choice he could possibly make said “Well I'm gonna die anyway 🤷🏽” and proceeded to make the choice#so hard that he angered god#That's y'all's man right there#I left out Perseus because truthfully I don't actually know much about him#I haven't studied him even a fraction as much as I've studied some of the other big culture heroes and none of this is cited so i don't wan#to talk about stuff I don't know 100%#Anyway justice for Zeus fr#Gimme something give me literally anything other than the nonsense we usually get for him#This goes for Hera too btw#Both the king and queen of the skies are done TERRIBLY by wider greek myth audiences and it's genuinely disheartening to see#If y'all could make excuses for Achilles to forgive his flaws y'all can do it for them#They have a lot more to sympathise with I'll tell you that#(that is a completely biased statement; you are completely free and encouraged to enjoy whichever figures spark joy)#zeus

I get the criticism of the Hunters of Artemis from a narrative perspective—it sucks that it essentially boots interesting female characters out of the story—but it always baffles me when people viciously hate Artemis for *checks notes* doing damage control.
Like. Thalia explicitly goes with Artemis to avoid the prophecy, and I definitely think that’s the reason Artemis tried so hard to get her to join—hell, you can view the hunters trying to recruit Annabeth as a way to get Thalia to join. And Bianca? You can’t convince me that Artemis didn’t guess there was something up there and react accordingly.
If Percy or Nico were even a little bit girl-adjacent you bet your ass she would be all over them to join. No one actually wants to risk the Great Prophecy happening, and Artemis is doing a hell of a lot more to stop it than anyone else.
