The aim of Sound & Vision was to create a festival, be it music, food, film… or just about anything that was worth celebrating! During the brief, I needed to create an identity for the festival, brand guideline, 3 touchpoints and a promotional moving image.

Firstly, I started off by deciding what type of festival I wanted to do and what theme it was going to be. I did in fact decide to do about music, as I felt it was something I could easily talk about, as music is a glorious thing and is thankfully always around us. I did however struggle on what theme to do it as, as around me I saw all these great ideas from peers and thought how am I going to make this festival different? Therefore, I took a step back and thought what do I already know? I find myself on Spotify an awful lot and thought this would be ideal to use as a theme. A lot of the music I listen too are artists or bands who aren’t really well known and have something called ‘low monthly listeners’ this is a term that Spotify use to show the listener if the artist is verified/how popular they are!

That’s what gave me the idea to create my festival in collaboration with Spotify, to promote their low monthly listened too artists, as a celebration to them. Then I went onto branding the actual festival, I thought branding was something I find quite easy, however with this brief which was left quite open I found it quite hard. The name, Emblazon, was quite easy to come up with as I searched for synonyms of celebration and Emblazon came up as it means ‘to celebrate or extol publicity’, “Their success was emblazoned”. I knew with the branding I needed to incorporate it slightly with Spotify, as after all it’s a collaboration so the identities need to correspond. Therefore, I did stick to a very minimalistic/monochrome approach, as I felt this gave the logo the life it needed and communicated the sense of style/genre I was trying to put across. For the final touchpoints, I created a poster, ticket, t-shirt and an app. The app for me was the main touchpoint, as I felt this was one of the main things that made my festival different to all the others. The app consisted of a few sections, an about, set list, map and ‘the gallery’. The idea of keeping it very app based was because Spotify is obviously a web/app service. After researching the audience, 15-34 year olds are the key Spotify listeners therefore I needed to make it appropriate towards them. I thought the map of the festival would be wise to put on there, as maps are very easily lost and this way it can track your location via GPS and tell you exactly where you are rather trying to read a map. ‘The Gallery’ is a section which connects with Instagram but straight to the # of the festival, so the festival attenders can post what they wish of their time at the festival and the idea was to have the sponsors (which is B&O) to hold a give-away, to the best photo or video. The promotional 10 second video was a challenge for me. I wanted to use a software which I wasn’t particularly familiar with as I always try and push myself every project… I decided to use After Effects. I find this quite confusing, I know the basics however for this video I did find myself struggling quite a bit. That’s when I intrusted the help of my sister who is a working Graphic Designer, I needed some guidance on the video on how I should direct it, she advised to keep it short and sweet, however to include as much/the right amount of information possible.

For artist research, I looked at Universal Everything to begin with. This was because I love their design ethic and knew I could get some sort of direction/inspiration from them as I’ve tried during this brief to stay away from my usual designers/agencies such as Hugo & Marie and Hvass & Hannibal. When looking on Universal Everything’s website, there was a video 2-part series which was called Ambient which struck out to me. What caught my attention was the colours of the animation as they were the same colours as Spotify (green and white) there were 30-second-long videos which had spheres circulating in a repetitive motion. This gave me the idea to use spheres within my designs, as it corresponded with the minimalistic theme I was going for.

I think the challenges I faced in this project was 100% the branding and 10 second video. The branding did take me a good 3-4 weeks to fully complete as I kept creating logos repeatedly as I was either never fully satisfied nor did I think it fit the bill. The same as the 10 second video, I think this was a definite challenge as I haven’t created film in a very long time. If I was to do it again I would have planned and started the promotional video a lot earlier, giving me the time to learn the software so I could’ve made something which was a lot more effective, giving me the skills to use later. However, I am pleased with the other final products, I like that I’ve shown them in real ‘positions’ so we can see what they would look like if there were used properly.

I did enjoy this brief overall as it’s so different to anything I’ve done before. However, I do wish I would’ve given myself more time on certain areas and done some more artist research, usually I do so much research however I think I took the last briefs criticism on board to literally and now I’ve not done as much as I would usually do.
