#listen from that one weird commercial with the claymation Gollums feeding each other with giant spoons#to watching Okja#to the post I just saw where white dudes critiqued an aspect of Black Panther#all I wanna do is watch The East again#it was my third favorite movie of 2013 and I never talk about it because the other two favorites of 2013 overshadowed it so much#but it had by far the most nuance with the whole 'the antagonists are right but they went too hard and they're villains now' thing#and the protagonist accomplishing their goals using her own resources and connections without harming anyone? I cried#it was also... the least fanciful Marling-Batmanglij joint#and the one that least presents her character as a messiah figure#(she still plays a messiah figure but they were sliiiightly more restrained about it)#(actually in hindsight that lace-edged hoodie was highkey Marian imagery hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm)#anyway Ellen Page has done a couple anarcho crust-punk type movies and I'm not saying they're accurate#but they both critique the cult of personality and abuse that can develop in that isolation
