001. the professor provides every member of libertalia a unique codename that reflects their personality. each codename is derived from various forms of mythology, folklore, or literature. why do you think the professor chose that name for you? do you agree or disagree with his decision?

a smirk tugs at her lips, before she takes the screwdriver from where it’d been held between her teeth. “so van helsing, right? infamous vampire hunter, the character practically immortalized due to more recent works making him out to be this action hero. when in reality he was so much more, as written in bram stoker’s dracula. a philosopher, doctor, lawyer, professor, metaphysist…but most importantly, a scientist. i guess my background in science, philosophy and dabbling in metaphysics gave way to my codename. and honestly i enjoy it.”

002. gaining an invitation into libertalia isn’t an easy feat. what do you think made you special enough to get handpicked by the professor? and what qualities do you think allowed you to join your position?

"i feel like i'm going to sound like a right arse for answering this, talking all high and mighty of myself." she snorts, leaning forward in her chair. "but i digress. i'm fairly good at thinking on my feet, i was able to get my old crew out of some hairy situations with some on-the-spot concoctions. my engineering professor said i have a wild mechanical aptitude, which i figure helps me with a lot of what i do for the libertalia. whether that be reworking the weapons, coming up with a new way in or out, or just plain ole chemical engineering. my brain just has a way of working problems from multiple angles before landing on the best possible solutions."

003. the captain’s crew is the highest position at libertalia, they are the select few who are aware of the professor’s identity. do you desire to graduate to this level? if you’re already a member of the captain’s crew what motivated you to change your position?

“maybe one day, i think it would be fun to figure out the plans for the heists and such. that being said, i truly enjoy what i do. i wouldn't have gotten into, or stayed in this field of expertise if i didn't. so i suppose i'd miss making things go boom personally if i managed to move up the ladder to the captains."

004. although many members of libertalia don’t know each other’s personal lives, it’s rumored that many members came from suspicious backgrounds. who were you before joining and what was your life like prior?

"i feel like this is one of those questions you're not actually supposed to answer...or rather answer with 'i'm not at liberty to disclose that information." helsing smirks before waving her hand dismissively. "i'm kidding. i had my own crew i ran with, ever since i was 16 until i joined the libertalia. it was fun, they were essentially my second family. i flourished under them and i owe a lot of what i know about the criminal world to them. before that it was just a simple life in london with my parents and two older brothers, who i still keep in contact with. i mainly got into crime after a fire burned down the family bakery and we needed the money, ever since i've sent some back from whatever i make."

005. what was your primary motivation for joining libertalia? was it for the riches or for the thrill of adventure? or is there something else motivating you to continue working for the group? what do you hope to achieve?

"honestly? the thrill of adventure." she laughs. "i know! i know, it's cheesy. my old crew ran your run of the mill heists but the whole premise and mystery of libertalia really intrigued me. and so far i haven't been disappointed. riches are neither nor there, i love my job even more now than i did then. so if there's anything i hope to achieve out of all of this, it’s to continue to get better at what i do. and c'mon, finding henry avery's treasure? that'd be such an awesome thing to put on the hypothetical resume."

006. how would the other members describe you? would you consider yourself to be a team-player or do you prefer to work independently?

"100% a team player, even if i'm more of a 'tell me what you want done then let me do it in peace' type." helsing admits with a grin and shrug. "i'll do whatever i have to do to keep my team safe and make sure they get back in one piece, blow things up first and pay for the damages later. 9 times out of 10 you'll find cookies in my lab for when anyone swings by, i have an open door policy unless the 'do not disturb' sign is explicitly up."

007. libertalia is anonymous, therefore necessitates secrecy outside of the group. how do you balance your personal life outside of this, granted you have one? is there a clear separation between libertalia and your personal life?

"i feel like it's a bit of a cliché, but my family actually think i work for the british government." she rolls her eyes before laughing, holding her hands up in defense. "i'm serious! i have a friend who works at mi5 that i managed to convince into covering for me when i first got into my more shady work. they're in a lower level position, so if my parents call their office my friend will cover for me and let me know they called. we have a whole set up, real movie worthy. i have a few friends from outside of this business that i get together with. i'd say i keep my personal and libertalia life fairly separate, unless i get together with one of the crew outside of work."

008. henry avery’s treasure has been lost since 1695. even with the brightest minds on the case, all leads to find the treasure haven’t turned up. avery’s treasure is the professor’s white whale and after several years of searching, many believe the treasure ceases to exist. do you believe the treasure exists?

“sure, why not?” she mumbles, mouth quirking to the side. “we haven’t found any proof yet to suggest otherwise, so i feel it does exist. just because something’s been lost for such a long time, doesn’t mean that it changes it legitimacy. let’s just hope this white whale doesn’t kill us like ahab’s did him.”

009. do you trust the professor? do you trust the libertalia?

chewing on the end of a twizzler, helsing shrugs. “i trust everyone until they give me a reason not to. i find it’s almost easier that way. so far, neither the professor nor the libertalia have given me any reason to distrust them. so, until further notice, they have my full loyalty.”

part three: the biography;

jaya nadar grew up the daughter of two fairly basic london individuals — a history professor at oxford and a 4th generation bakery owner. two older brothers meant she had two protectors who also taught her how to take care of herself when they weren’t around. “you fight dirty,” rishi, the oldest, always told her “and never assume they’re going to fight fair.” she was a bit of a quirky scrapper growing up, and a nerdy one at that. meaning if the resident bully tried to take the lunch money off of one of her fellow nerds…she’d just take it right back, grinning as she’d hand it back, wiping the blood from her lips. her parents wanted her to make more friends, not that she lacked any...but the ones that she did probably weren't exactly the kind that they'd had in mind. after a science experiment unintentionally actually went right, jaya gained the attention of a crew looking for a new explosives expert. and she became it. she was 16 when she joined the crew, and they taught her everything else that she'd need to know to run with them; weapons proficiency, better tactics with explosives and chemical engineering, even mechanical skills that jaya took to easily. the crew stayed together up until 7 years ago, when the democratic way with which they ran started to fracture right in front of jaya's eyes. different ideas and point of views made them split, and jaya left broken hearted before it could (ironically) blow up in her face. that's when she got the call. she joined the libertalia in a heartbeat, not asking many questions because really, who wouldn't want to join a mysterious organization eh? she doesn't take herself too seriously, but she does everything in her power to be the best at what she does, for the sake of the rest of the group. she'll do whatever it takes to make sure they can get back in one piece, even if that means blowing things up first and paying for the damages later. 9/10 find her sitting upside down, with a screwdriver clutched between her teeth as she tinkers with a weapon or figures out an equation. she’s always experimenting and tinkering with the weapons, never wanting to fit the crew with any old equipment. she’s a good listener, witty, and a wicked shot. always been a plucky one, she'd prefer to go through a wall than jump over it and honestly does try to talk her way out of situations...but isn't afraid to resort to whatever tactics are necessary to help her coworkers or self out. also 10/10 will cook for you if you had a bad day okay.

Animated Typographic Poster Research 1 - 'Create'

Week 7 SDL

This animated typographic poster uses a simple stretching motion from one side of the poster to the other. I think that this motion adds depth to the composition by creating a back and forth motion which can represent the back and forth feelings when creating a new composition. I think that this works because although it is a simple poster with simple motions, it still communicates a clear idea.

Animated Typographic Poster Research 2 - 'Build Something'

This animated poster uses two simple yet effective motions. The first motion is the type being stacked on top of each other. This motion really takes the words literally and 'builds' them together. The second motion are the type collapsing downwards, almost as if a build was collapsing. I like how they took the words literally and just by using simple motions, created a composition that correlates well with the typography and motion.

Animated Typographic Poster Research 3 - 'Abstract Poster Concept'

This poster combines using shapes and type motions. The type moves in a stretching and rotating motion, while the shapes are moving in a stretching, up and down, rotating, and floating motion. Each shape/pattern is moving in one of these motions. I like how it looks together with the type and the abstract design it has.

“Three years from now, I don’t know how this is gonna be, but I’m glad... I’m glad I’ve got you here with me to pretend it’s gonna be forever,” Nate said. “To pretend that anything’s gonna be forever.”

Their whole lives, Nathaniel had instilled that every moment was running out. One passed and devoured the other, and there was no telling when the satiation would end and if they’d make it through to see it. They weren’t looking to live life to the fullest, though. His own fears of a ticking in the back of his head, some undisclosed expiration he shared with his mother, drove Nathaniel to chase impulse for a quick fix because there was no telling how long they’d have to survive. For better, Nate wasn’t alone in it–– and for worse, Abraham understood it and carried its weight.

“Everyone here... they’re not wrong. This is insane.” The cigarette he brought to his lips was more ash than anything else now, but he needed to convince himself that the world was still burning between his fingertips. He needed a promise that the chaos he used to pave every step, the flames of every bridge he burned, were still hot to the touch. This wasn’t settling. It couldn’t be. Stopping, stalling, and slowing down would be the death of him. “But that’s all the more reason to do it. We agreed that no one else is gonna understand it the way we do, no one’s gonna understand that this is the one normal we can have, Abe. Why the fuck won’t we try and make it ours before time runs out, just one thing that anyone else could have?”

There’d been little talk about why he went through with it, but there was more to it. Nathaniel had conducted the twisting of the knot between him and Heidi just as much as she had. Typical wasn’t in the books for either one of them, but this could be a chance to say they tried.

“Go deeper,” Taron told him, grinding his teeth as the tattoo gun crossed over the soft flesh of his palm. While his pain tolerance was high, there was no denying that this tattoo would have anyone asking for a break within minutes, but he had no intention of stopping. “It’s not gonna show up, otherwise- ah, okay, I deserved that.”

He shifted his weight into the shoulder of the hand he was working on, his other hand digging into his leg to redirect the pain so he would stay still. It had been a while since he had his palms touched up. Taron had liked how the faded ink made them look dirty and grimey, matching some comment he had been given by his wife when they first met. But now, they had faded so much that it looked like a few stray pen marks and with most of his appointments weeks away, he could afford some time to let them heal without affecting work.

Aww, you’re so sweet! I actually watched Banana Fish a few months ago, but I recently re-watched it with my sister (and ripped my heart out again in the process), so that’s why I’ve been posting more about it lately!. Anyway, thank you for sending me the ask! :) Here are my answers:

001 | Fandom: Banana Fish

Favorite character: Honestly, as much as I love Eiji, it’s gotta be Ash. I will never stop grieving for him, and I appreciate the complexity of his character.

Least Favorite character: Yikes, there’s so many assholes in this show. I’m gonna go with Abraham for creating Banana Fish and then being a weak little bitch about it when shit hits the fan, and for hurting Shorter. Eduardo is also SCUM.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): I’m not sure if I could come up with 5 ships for this show…Asheiji for sure. Also Max + Jessica.

Character I find most attractive: Ash

Character I would marry: Blanca (hahaha, he’s well-read, attractive, mature, and cares for Ash despite the circumstances they’re both in)

Character I would be best friends with: I wanna be friends with Cain!

A random thought: Cain is such an underrated character! At least, I don’t hear much about him within the fandom. Sing is also a precious bby.

An unpopular opinion: Ash’s full name sounds kinda ugly? Like I love the meaning behind it, but Aslan Jade Callenreese is a bit much.

My Canon OTP: Asheiji

My Non-canon OTP: Don’t really have any.

Most Badass Character: It’s pretty much a tie between Ash and Blanca, but I guess I’d have to pick Blanca since he taught Ash.

Most Epic Villain: Dino. I wouldn’t call him “epic,” but his evil is an evil that’s not so in-your-face, but that still permeates the entire series (Please read @softasheijis‘s analysis of this, it’s great! Pairing I am not a fan of: Hm. I don’t know of many pairings in the fandom, but Ash + anyone other than Eiji just isn’t right, hahaha. Also Blanca + Yut-Lung is gross b/c of the age thing.

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Some characters may be screwed up in the head, but other than that, no one.

Favourite Friendship: Shorter + Ash!

Character I most identify with: Ash. I have never experienced any kind of trauma to that comes anywhere near to what Ash had to endure, but I identify with the difficulty he had with believing he’s someone worthy to be loved. I’ve got low self-esteem and it can really get to me at times :/ I also don’t tend to trust people very easily.

Character I wish I could be: Hmm, well, I don’t think I’d want the tragic life that comes with being any of the characters…but if I had to choose I guess it would be Yut-Lung so I could have his wardrobe, lol.

002 | Ship: Asheiji

When I started shipping them: Honestly - the pole vaulting scene - I knew they were a ship from what I heard about the show before watching it, so my love of their connection was instantaneous. More realistically - that tender moment in Ep. 11 when Eiji promises Ash that he’ll stay by his side, even if the rest of the world turns on him. (God, I’m almost crying just writing this).

My thoughts: This is one of my all-time favorite ships because the dynamic between the characters and what could have been between them sticks out for me. They deserved better.

What makes me happy about them: Their trust. They would give their lives for each other, and even though this turns out to get them both in a lot of trouble, it comforts me to think that Ash found someone he could rely on after 17 years of hell. Also, the fact that they can both be themselves in the relationship; as Max said, Ash found someone he can finally act his age around, unguarded.

What makes me sad about them: Ash will never get to go to Japan with Eiji :’(

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Making them suffer any more than they already have.

Things I look for in fanfic: More fluff/hugs/domestic content

My wishlist: I don’t really understand this question? I wish for them to be happy. That is all.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: There’s just no other non-platonic pairing for either of them that I can think of.

My happily ever after for them: Ash goes to the library after being stabbed, but calls himself an ambulance, or Max, or anyone who could get him to the hospital, recovers, then meets up with Eiji in Japan where they live a happy, simple life together (as much as possible, ik Ash still has a ton of shit he needs to sort through.)

003 | Character: Eiji

How I feel about this character: His pureness always makes me smile, but he’s also got some spunk! Lol, as in, he teases Ash and isn’t afraid of him (the pumpkin thing, being able to wake Ash up when everyone else is terrified, throwing Ash in the shower, etc.) and he also becomes more able to defend himself as the show progresses; first he goes to Chinatown to find Shorter wearing that ridiculous outfit, then he holds Yut-lung hostage (kinda) and (tries) to shoot Dino. Bless him.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Ash

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: I love his interactions with Bones and Kong!

My unpopular opinion about this character: Not sure if this is “unpopular,” but I’ve heard some stuff about Eiji being more “edgy” (haha, see what I did there) in the manga, so I’d like to see more of that play out in the anime, to give him a little more nuanced character.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish we could’ve got more background info on him. Like we know that he’s a former pole-vaulter and that he has a little sister, but not much more than that. I think one of the side stories of the manga has this content though!

Favorite friendship for this character: Eiji & Shorter! Shorter was so protective of Eiji during their limited time together, and I would have loved to see more Ash - Eiji - Shorter friendship interactions.

My crossover ship: Hm, can’t think of any at the moment!
