|| I've said this before and I'll say it a hundred times because I just love what I did with this, but in Lia's TWST verse, she is based on Meg from Hercules...but she's mostly based on Eurydice from Greek mythology (and a LOT of inspiration from Hadestown).
Meg and Herc's relationship in the movie reminds me a lot about Orpheus and Eurydice (which is my favorite Greek story). Essentially, a girl who sees the way the world is meets a man (a musician) who sees how the world could be. They fall in love despite their differences, and Eurydice learns to trust love. However, Eurydice is soon killed by a snake, and in some retellings of the story she gives her soul to Hades in return for security, since her new husband (Orpheus) hasn't been protecting her like she thought he would.
In the versions where she makes a deal with Hades, she doesn't realize that this deal will take her life away. So she dies and is forced to be one of the departed souls within the Underworld.
Whenever Lia killed her father in an attempt to escape and find freedom, she essentially was forced to sell her soul to the Shroud family. In the Hercules movie and with Lia, the beginning and ending of Orpheus and Eurydice is swapped--the girl is already owned by Hades before she falls in love, and although she wants to follow her lover into the light, she can't.
So Lia has stopped trying.
