Briefly (haha, nope) about my attitude to Netflixvania: I’m neither a fan of the original animated series, nor its hater (I like S1 and S2, but S3 and S4 are absolutely not for me. Apart from the franchise, it remains one of the strongest animated works). I'm always open to new things as long as the creators try to keep at least some connection between characters and their prototypes (and I have some concerns about it).

As a fan of Maria Renard (especially the grown-up version), I'm glad she's not forgotten. The gaming community is largely divided between those who see Maria as a funny child added into the universe as a joke, and those who hate the adult version for being implied to be Alucard's love interest (I don’t agree with some fans' interpretation of their relationship, but more on that another time. glorfys_glorioushair's vision is the closest to me).

I'M TIRED, I just want to meet new people, even if we have different canon sources. I will take care of them, warm them up, presenting the games xD

In more detail (not criticism, just verbiage): Let's start from the obvious part — this is a product of inspiration, not an adaptation in the literal sense. To get some pleasure watching the animated series, you need to distance yourself from games. This is a quite standard method nowadays, I think.

I'm still forming an opinion about Nocturne, because the story is not finished yet. But I'm also slowly plunging into melancholy, because Alumaria ship and Maria are the cornerstones of my love to Castlevania per se.

How changed is the huntress' image? Well, I feel like Netflix missed some potential that games contained (or will implement it later?) and done a hideous damage with Maria's swearing, but there's still a chance to patch up such flaws with her growing up.

I always imagined her as a battle Lady. Dangerous and daring, but elegant and well-mannered (if I correctly understood Renard family's position). If I were the adaptation's author, I would tend to the archetype of a young noble lady breaking stereotypes. (Without extremes, of course — she is engaged in a tough business). This would have provided interesting dynamics with other characters (and an interesting detail for Richette), since the nobility side would be represented not only by vampires, but also the dissident protagonists.

This doesn’t mean I think Netflix’s biography of Maria is bad — it’s just different and takes us away from Konami again. Whether this is good or bad — we still have to find out. Perhaps it's just a matter of habit?

However, I'm hopeful about the family arc. Such plot has controversial nuances, but it's much better than the off-screen death of nameless parents. I want to witness the girl's experiences and life lessons! I'm also absolutely thrilled with how Tera's character was reworked!

I thank and at the same time judge the creators for the way they managed characters' age. Now the gifted summoner better fits the gloomy setting, but, unfortunately, she meets Alucard too early — this fact obviously sets the audience against the romance. Because of S4*, I already had to bury my dream about "one true love" story (its symbolism is expressed in the wolf form), and then they added fuel to the fire**.

(*A dude can't experience "first and/or only love" more than once (not being reincarnated, of course), so my favorite trope just won't be adapted. It's not about Greta, she's a good (one of the best in S4, actually) character. You can substitute Sonia in her place or swap Maria and Greta, and my message will not change. It’s just that Konami — many years ago — hooked me with a story about naive and inexperienced lovers. Given Alucard's nature, this made an interesting topic to explore. But, since I am still here, it means I accept new rules.) (**In my culture, only the moment (age) when a romance begins is important. Not the moment of first meeting. But it's hard to miss the public outcry — people haven't seen the characters' relations yet, but already hate their dynamics).

I'm also upset that in battle scenes Maria is a pale shadow of herself. In the opening fight, she couldn't handle just one vampire, but I hope that the writers intentionally left room for her skills development. Drawing a little minus for this. But a plus for the sword and the underrated DXC design!

Well, if the plot disappoints me, at least a lot of visual content will remain, which is a real treasure for a fan of unpopular Maria. I'll always admire the work of all involved artists.

P.S. Yes, I deliberately omit the analysis of general history, setting, etc. (After all, this is not a review of the entire Nocturne, just a character's superficial analysis). There is a huge room for discussion, but I will leave it to more historically savvy people. One thing I understand for sure: this is one of the most visually and historically rich basis, which wasn't used properly. On the other hand, it's mainly a matter of budget. Corporations are unfair to creative studios. In my perfect world, Powerhouse and Konami join their forces.

Hey Konami, don't you have an animation studio? Your followers are dreaming about a canonical adaptation or a remake of an iconic game with significantly deeper plot.

I never seriously criticize and certainly never post angry manifests, especially dedicated to someone’s creative expression. I'm always looking for the positive aspects, but if my patience runs out, I usually just retire.

Anyway, since the release of S1 I've been immersed in the Nocturne fandom and even prepared something unique for you!

originally born in hulbury, the family moved to postwick when leon was ~10 and hop ~5 to be with Sana's parents after pa passed away suddenly (rapid decline after a cancer diagnosis :( ) leon is trans; hop is he/they nonbinary (but doesnt crack his egg til partway thru his gym challenge)

they had it quite rough for a while after farhad's passing. sana was struggling to find a job due to her lingering grief, and while her parents did everything they could to keep food on the table, it was incredibly tough.

one day, while staying out far past his curfew, leon met sonia & her grandma magnolia gifted him his charmander! he calls her charlene because he's very creative <3

he gets in trouble with his ma for staying out late, but she's very quickly enamoured with the charmander so he's not in that much trouble...

leon quickly develops a talent for pokemon battles, wiping the floor with even adult trainers when he enters a for-fun battling tournament in a local park, intended for casual trainers.

(un)fortunately for him, one certain chairman rose happened to be watching. and seeing how leon's talent was not only incredible, but also just in its infancy, he instantly recognised someone who he could have as a star. his star.

he becomes a mentor figure to leon, rose is an accomplished battler after all, and even sponsors him to join the league! leon... honestly would much rather keep his battling and pokemon training to just be a hobby, but... well, his family need money. and he loves his family. so of course he accepts, and battles his way to the top, all the way above the poverty line and into upper-middle-class life. all by the time he's twelve. he hasn't even properly started secondary school; he's missed basically his entire first year to the league and promotional events, acting as Galar's newest rising star.

he's upset. he's lonely. his friendships feel forced and strained. he misses his family, he misses his hobbies. he's camera shy and doesnt like all the questions people ask him, as if he's a prop, as if he's an actor, as if he's not even a kid anymore.

but it's worth it, right? his family are doing better financially- great, even! they've moved out of that crummy, damp filled (cozy. it sucks, but he misses it. misses what it represented. family. being close.) little cottage, and moved into a huge, three storey house in the nicest part of postwick! he can afford to get his family extravagant gifts whenever he wants- even though technically rose manages his finances, but rose lets him do whatever he wants with it. it's his money, after all.

it's fine. his family are happy. they're comfortable. his ma or grandparents no longer have to skip on meals for him and hop to eat. they could afford to have a three course meal for every mealtime if they wanted. it's fine. he's fine. he can do this. he loves his family.

he loves them. he wishes he could tell them, but it's so hard to find time to go home anymore. every magazine, every tabloid, every news program and newspaper and website and every single person wants an interview and a thousand photographs. he's signing autographs for hours, replying to letters by hand so much his wrist aches. he wants to go home, but he needs to stay where the work is, where the money is. he's thirteen, he loves his family. he's fine. he's eighteen and he loves his family. and he's fine. he's twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two... he loves his family. he's still not processed his father's death properly; busywork drowns him and his whole body aches, and he hates battling these days, everything's all so fake, so scripted, he's always advertising something or other, something he doesn't care for, but he's fine. he's getting paid. his family is comfortable. they're fine, so he is, too.

hop doesn't really remember much from before leon became champion. he remembers a bit of hulbury, of course- that's where he met vic, after all- but... not much else. grief and poverty wound together for those couple of years, and thesedays, it's almost completely repressed. almost.

he misses his brother, but loves when he comes to visit- or when hop can go and visit him, down in wyndon. he can tell something's not quite right with leon, his smiles are always a little too wide, his eyes always so tired, he drops thoughts mid-sentence and stares off into nothingness too much... but lee never tells him what's wrong. eventually, hop stops asking, frustrated, feeling like leon doesn't trust him, or thinks he's too little, but he still tries to cheer him up.

hop's first pokemon is his wooloo, whistle. whistle is a little knowitall. he and charlene have a faux-rivalry, since charlene also loves to dote on hop, and whistle is like "Umm Ex-Cuuuse me, lady, this is My boy. fuck off." and charlene is like "dude ur a tiny sheep. u dont even have hands to ruffle his hair. pathetic." they're friends, really, when it comes down to it, but most of the time they are having beef over completely inconsequential things. hop thinks its incredibly funny. hop caught him on accident one day. vic- who already had a pokemon- had come by for a sleepover, and was showing hop how pokeballs work. hop was looking at one, and dropped it. it rolled down the hill, got boosted off a small rock, and hit whistle, who had been snoozing. insane.

hop loves his family just as fiercely as leon does. but because hes the youngest, because they're all adults, and he's not... he feels like they never take him seriously.

it's difficult. it's weird. they miss each other, but there's a rift there. battles, grief, naivete, fears said and silent... they'll cross it someday, but it's clear that something needs to change.

maybe one day, it will. and things will start to get better.

charlene | charizard, f, she/her | leon's ace. can mega evolve, but they choose to gigantamax her bc of Branding. tough-love kinda gal, rough and tumble, loves to train herself, often wrestles lee's other pokemon for funsies. teases hop's pokemon affectionately. uchi villager kinda girl

holly | haxorus, f, she/her | first pokemon leon caught after setting out on his gym challenge. holly is camera shy, like leon, but loves to battle. she doesnt really like her role as a champion's pokemon, but leon is her best friend, so she sticks it out for him. she's very kind.

link | aegislash, m, he/it | yes named after link from LOZ. nobody tell shinon. gluttonous beast, please stop eating the automatic doors of rose tower. tough and reliable, but can easily be persuaded with snacks. sometimes, anyway. won't take anything from rose. rose's number 1 hater.

oceana | rhyperior, f, she/her | named after her favourite sweet treat- rock-stick candy from the beach :) . she's another shy one, and very much looks up to charlene. despite being shy, she can be quite argumentative, and butts heads with link a lot.

cinnamon | dragapult, m, he/him | weirdo who comes and goes as he pleases. he's a freak he's a weirdo what the hell is he doing here (on this mortal plane) he doesnt belong here (hes a ghost of a dragon that lived millions of years ago) . anyway. cinnamon is an edgelord loner who literally will steal leon's phone to listen to emo music. what a legend.

tango | rillaboom, f, she/her | super upbeat and happy-go-lucky. tango is the baby of the team, quite literally only having become a part of it in the last couple of years, after leon's previous 6th team member (a rapidash named Prince) had to retire from professional battling due to an injury. tango is very sweet and genuine, but her high energy does sometimes irritate the quieter members of the team. her bestie is cinnamon though. they listen to linkin park together :)

and for hop! darling hopscotch <3

whistle | dubwool, m, he/him | hop's ace. knowitall little man. this wooloo is a hater and he loves to be a hater <3 . he will chat shit about anyone who even looks at hop funny. watch out bede. def hop's number one, his best friend forever. so his confidence is knocked when hop's is, and when hop boxes him after the bede confrontation. is angry with hop for a long while after that, doesnt listen to him in battle, even when hop returns him to his team. it's not until the eternatus incident that whistle forgives him.

severn | inteleon, m, he/they | chatty and fun. severn likes to make sure everyone is included in things :) . he's very sweet and reliable, the unofficial leader of hop's team. very well respected and level-headed, even if he's not the best battler.

citrus | pincurchin, f, she/her | mysterious. quiet. oddly powerful. very chill, good listener. offers her teammates insanely good advice. why is this spiky blob so wise? who knows.

bex | cramorant, f, she/her | unlike most cramorant, who rarely have a thought in their heads, bex is ridiculously intelligent. like. scarily intelligent. this bird can do calculus. she's a little bit stuck up, which is funny, and sometimes her teammates (just whistle. who is jealous) find her to be annoying. but she is also patient and good at explaining things. she and severn like to come up with battling strategies together

teacup | snorlax, m, he/him | sleeby.... very reliable and gentle. likes to tuck his teammates in at night, hop included. makes sure they all rest well.

lingcod | corviknight, m, he/him | yes, named after the fish. this is the mon hop has had the most trouble with. lingcod was a rescue from a trainer who sucked BAD. lingcod was raised with a need to be unnecessarily aggressive, and to be strong above all else. he lashes out a lot at first, and is generally disliked by a lot of the team. he doesnt trust any of them, but hop slowly earns his trust by simply not giving up on him. eventually, lingcod learns to relax and settles in with the team. he likes teacup the best. they're snoozing buddies. hes still anxious and bitey, and doesnt like new people, but he's slowly doing a lot better, bit by bit :)

I know you said they were self-explanatory. But...do you think you could explain the appeal for you in the ships and friendships listed in the "Still Really Like" tier?

Sure, no problem!

Generally, the vibe is that these are the ships that I most like for him, within the constraints that the other person has to be an Ultimate. (Since Makoto and Hajime, the non-Ultimates, are already in the highest tier.) For the most part, I like him with characters who will go against the grain of his more unsavory convictions, because the part of me that is really bothered by his thing with Ultimates wants to see him recover from it. (It's the burnt out former gifted kid in me, I think. And that hyperlink is to a song of the same name. It's a good song.) But to break it down more specifically:

Komanami: I like their interactions in the game, and since I mentioned that I'm kind of unenthusiastic to ship Nagito with any Ultimates, Chiaki is up there because, of the Ultimates, she at least would really push back against a lot of his stuff regarding talent. They both like games, they both have surface-level mellow vibes, and I love the height difference. The fact that she's willing and able to politely ask him to stop doing what he's doing is nice. And I think he's someone who would gladly just let her sleep on him.

Komazumi: Similar to Chiaki, of all the Ultimates, Mahiru is (and sees herself as) pretty normal, and she has/had a reserve course best friend. There's enough in place for her to refute some of Nagito's stuff, and she's often assertive and considerate. She thought to bring him food when he was tied up. Her comment that he would make a good stay at home dad (or whatever it was) in SDR2 also helps. And I think the fact that Mahiru is someone who will readily admit to not being okay is good for him. Also, luck and photography can be an interesting combination.

Kamukoma: This is opposite vibes from Komanami and Komazumi, but Izuru and Nagito's very similar baggage can work well in a scenario where they're both trying to heal. Or be an absolute powder keg, in a scenario where they're not. I ship them both with Makoto more, but I do still ship them with each other. Partially because there's too much good fanart of them not to. And partially because, as I've mentioned in the past, I have a personal fondness for equilateral triangles.

Nagito x Chihiro: Okay, so here the ship answers the question of "If I saw Nagito do an out-of-the-box extreme gesture of devotion for someone, which character(s) would I be cool with having on the receiving end?" and also "Which character(s) could use a slightly over-enthusiastic pep talk?" (I think Nagito would really flourish if he gave someone a pep talk and they actually brightened up and got inspired. He dreams of that kind of win.)

Like Mahiru, Chihiro will just openly not be okay. Chihiro will openly cry. Chihiro will openly ask for advice. I think those things would be good for Nagito. But also, Chihiro wants to "become stronger", and I think having someone willing to go to misguided lengths to cheer them on and help them out would be a positive thing. Nagito would love an Ultimate with a specialized intellectual talent who wants to push themself past their current limits. Would they potentially be a bad influence on each other? Yes, but in a way I'd be interested to explore.

And now for the platonic:

Sonagito: This one is mainly because Sonia is one of the characters who doesn't seem to hate him, in SDR2. Her reactions to him are very focused on what behavior of his she dislikes, not disliking him as a person. And Nagito tries to stop Teruteru from harassing her and makes fun of Kazuichi when she rejects him. They have a cute thing going on, is what I'm saying.

I think there would be more here if she were only born a princess and not also hypercompetent at being a princess, speaking a bunch of languages, etc. If it was just "She was born with her station and that's enough to call her an Ultimate," then that could begin to pull a thread, but she's just genuinely excellent, which would only reinforce his belief in the concept of Ultimates, so that's one for the minus column, lol. Don't get me wrong, I love Sonia's skills for her character; just in the context of her being friends with Nagito, it doesn't advance what I would want it to. And that's fine.

Nagito & Taka: Their diametrically opposed ideologies provide exactly what I want out of any Nagito relationship. And Nagito's very particular vibe of "regular rule breaker who is highly respectful toward authority" would be cool with Taka's very particular vibe of "wants to be friends with everyone but also no running in the halls". They both have trouble coming across how they want to, with their peers, and they both have a kind of callous way of expressing themselves sometimes, and they're both highly principled in very different ways. It'd be fun to explore a friendship between them.

Nagito & Kyoko: They're both so smart, and they have such different vibes. (This isn't an actual part of the character analysis, but I'm thinking of the Danganronpa Abridged joke/moment where Kyoko goes "No. Shut up," when Leon tries to say something during the first trial of THH, and comparing it to the canon moment where Nagito just says a knowing "I see," when Gundham says something in the fourth trial of SDR2. Does that make sense?)

They just know stuff, and they're both sitting on it, Nagito with a smile and Kyoko with a stoic expression. They could both just silently absorb and process information and both know that the other has picked up on what they have picked up on without saying a word. And then, if they're working together, both use it to corner someone verbally. And if they're no working together, then they try to work around each other mentally and that's also very fun!

Honestly, I love the idea of Nagito smiling sunnily at Kyoko and Kyoko staring stone-faced back and they are best friends, and I also love the idea of Nagito smiling sunnily at Kyoko and Kyoko staring stone-faced back and they are enemies. But it's also cool if they're not quite either one but they just have an understanding of each other that most don't have. Or if they're both dating Makoto and they just get each other in an almost kind of tense way, maybe accepting, maybe even hostile, just any angle for those two could be so cool.

He chuckles, currently heading back to the front of the local park where they initially met up at. He took her around the shopping district, thinking that'd make for a fun time. Whatever shop may have caught her interest, he'd happily go along with it and go inside with her. And any cafe or bookstore they surely popped into, he treated her to whatever she liked. Once they reached the park, Shuichi gestured to a nearby bench for them to sit at. "Now, to finally give you your gifts... I really hope you'll like them! Here you go... " From inside his bag, he pulls out a gift bag. One of the first things inside, were a small container of homemade red velvet chocolate chip cookies. Along with that, was a Halloween themed gift set containing black and red colored bottles of perfume, hand lotion, and a candle. A picture of a rose were depicted on them, with the scents of them all being called 'Vampire Blood.' With the kind of scent it is, being a mix of floral and fruity.

"I-I made the cookies, myself! And as for the gift set... I had saw it when looking through a store, to see what I could get for you. And naturally, I just had to get this the moment I saw it, since I thought you would absolutely love it. And the scent actually does smell nice... ! I hope you'll like it, too, Sonia-senpai: all of it." (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SONIAAA!!! ❤️ 🌹 🩸)

Sonia's Birthday Asks 2023 - Accepting until Monday, October 16!

It was true that both of them led busy lives: as the Ultimate Detective, Sonia only imagined the sorts of cases he was asked to solve (unfortunately, nothing as fascinating as mass murders or serial killers. Otherwise, she would've adored chiming in with all of her amassed knowledge from the likes of documentaries, non-fiction books, and published case studies that she indulged in for fun). But October was the best month of the year, if just for all of the horror and dark mystery titles aired and published in accordance to the spooky season. It felt odd, in her opinion, to take Shuichi from clothing store to clothing store, especially if there were no styles that suited his fashion taste as well. So instead they perused all manner of festive decor: new pens and stamps in a stationery shop to pair with letter-writing supplies in a gothic style, a supermarket's display of carved pumpkins (and specials on kobocha and various chocolate treats), a discount store full of Halloween costumes and cosplay items (she couldn't resist in putting Shuichi in a Sherlock Holmes-style hat, cape, and magnifying glass, though she'd balked at the rhinestone crowns and scepters for herself). Bookstores were a given, of course, and it was the place where they were both guaranteed to find some treasures.

But now they walked back from a themed, seasonal spooky cafe. The Vampire Cafe, a favorite haunt of hers, had been fully booked out for the month but one of the video game cafes was themed to a horror murder mystery game, complete with additional Halloween decor and macabre takes on cafe meals. Her hot chocolate, dripping down the sides with raspberry syrup to resemble blood, had been proof enough of the commitment to the theme. She hoped his mood was just as lighthearted and content as hers, Sonia smiling as she sat on the bench he'd indicated. "You arranged gifts for me, Saihara-san?" She asked, surprised. "But this day was such a fun gift already! I am truly blessed!"

She opened the first container's lid carefully, first perplexed by the cookies within before beaming. "These are very red cookies! Very spooky indeed. Are they...a berry flavor, of some sort? Perhaps with some sort of jam?" Red velvet, more of an American invention, had not gained popularity in Novoselic. Yet. Shuichi would likely need to inform her about the cocoa in the cookies, alongside with their red color.

The other gift was far simpler for Sonia to understand. She gasped in surprise, in awe, her fingers tracing over the black lace and antique gold packaging before uncovering the contents inside in their black and red bottles and containers. "Oh! A vampire's blood themed beauty set, it is so beautiful!" She exclaimed, examining the bottles before popping the small candle out of its plastic packaging. "Vampires are the most romantic theme for Halloween, you know. Well, vampires and ghosts and The Addams Family, really. But look, Saihara-san! When you light the black flame candle, it bleeds red with hot wax. How truly dark and terrifying! At least nothing shall befall me upon lighting this black flame candle: I am in no danger of rousing the Sanderson sisters!"

She chuckled at her joke: it was likely Shuichi didn't grow up on the likes of Western Halloween-themed movies and might not catch her reference, but the prospect amused her at least. "Thank you so much, Saihara-san. From your gifts to our wonderful day out, I have had such fun!"

In one wrapped with a bow, it had a brand logo of a fancy dessert café. Inside would contain several different flavors of macaroons, with two of each kind; such as red velvet, raspberry rose, green tea matcha, and chocolate ganache. In another were two books of a gothic-horror genre that he remembered her saying she would be excited to check out the one time... and then in the last gift box: was a bat-shaped necklace with a red gem in the center of it. 

 As she's looking at the gifts, he explains: "I thought you might enjoy some macarons, and... I wanted to appeal to your love for horror-related things with the books and necklace, hehe... I-I hope you love them! And Happy Birthday once more, Sonia-senpai... " And gives her a shy, but bright smile, hoping he could help make today even better for her...

Celebrate Sonia’s birthday with her! - Accepting from mutuals through Friday

Shuichi had been half-right: Sonia had been in the middle of something important, but she was in dire need of a break. Not being home for the annual ball, much less the rest of the week’s festivities, was taking a toll on everyone’s nerves, family and staff alike. But no one more than Sonia, who, despite not even being home, hadn’t slept for most of the week so far. The change in time zones had ensured her that there was time for her studies and time to address the Novoselic people through video stream, but little time for much else. Sleep was a luxury, right alongside food that she could actually chew, that the Ultimate Princess couldn’t currently afford.

So when she’d hastily explained to her personal secretary, her family’s head of Personal Relations, and her mother that no, she could not complete a question and answer session with Novosonian military veterans because a friend wished to meet her to quietly, and quickly, celebrate her birthday, Sonia had felt a sense of relief wash over her. It wasn’t a nap or a plate of chicken karaage or frites, but it was very welcome all the same. “Saihara-san,” Sonia smiled, giving him a small wave as she approached. Someone who smiled, someone who was pleased to see her and not listing off the many ways she was disappointing for wanting this life, this normal life, just for a little while made all the difference. “Thank you so much for your birthday wishes and for this suggestion! You’re right: the gardens are lovely this time of year. I like the changing colors of leaves as much as I like the cherry blossoms in full bloom. It would be a shame to let this opportunity go amiss.”

She accepted the gifts gently as she took a seat beside him. Ordinarily, it was considered bad form to open up a gift immediately after reception but she doubted Shuichi cared. In fact, that seemed to be precisely what he wanted for her to do, and so she nodded and began to carefully unbox and unwrap, trying not to rip the pretty paper. “Oh, I haven’t had macarons in ages!” She gushed. If ‘ages’ meant two months, then she was right: all part of the yearly fall duties to look her best, according to her family.

The other two gifts were less edible but in no way less desirable. Sonia grinned at the dark-hued covers, full of wrought-iron gates and castles that never saw sunlight. It was one thing to live in a castle, but it was quite another to live in a creepy one: one without light, without life, without love, save for the heroine destined to uncover the structure and its owner’s dark secrets. But it was the necklace she gingerly took out of the packaging and held up to the autumn afternoon sun, letting the red gem catch the thin rays of sunlight. “These are all so lovely, thank you so very much! I’ve seen jewelry like this but I’ve never been able to add such pieces to my collection. This is so beautifully macabre! I cannot wait to wear it!”

She’d actually seen something like it as part of Celeste’s collection and had coveted it ever since, a fact she’d both told Celeste and something the Ultimate Gambler had held over her for weeks now. She didn’t mean it maliciously, Sonia knew she couldn’t: deep down, she was a wonderful person. But she did enjoy watching a princess turn green with envy, as if it were a life’s mission fulfilled.

“I’m so very blessed to have you as a friend, Saihara-san. You’ve made my day so bright,” She nodded, not hesitating for a moment to add the necklace to her brown Main Course uniform. It didn’t quite lay correctly over the red neck ribbon but she didn’t care. As much as she liked to fit in, it was the only visible piece of her uniform that allowed her to express who she really was. “I shall read and eat and wear these and always think of you!”

He has a bit of an issue feeling as if he deserves to be in certain situations and relationships, and these double positive from you and your snake makes him a lot safer.

“I’ve never met a snake so receptive to affection.” He runs his finger up and down its scaly body.

“You’re very well-liked in this house.”

“Yes.”

He offers you a quick smirk before returning his attention back to the snake. “I wonder if it’s ever watched us makeout... Ne-heehee...”

You close your eyes, tilting your head away from him quickly before covering your mouth. Oh my goodness probably.

She puts her hand up to it, carefully sticking its tail through the hand-knitted snake sweater.

“Toujou-san made it,” she says. “Look, it's so comfortable!”

It’s head protrudes from the loose yarn - the snake doesn’t move outside of flicking its tongue and moving its head to look at you. It quickly and suddenly settled itself within the sleeve.

“Huh, you’re right.” Is all you can say. You pet its head with one finger before letting it settle in peace.

❤ The little thing never actually scared her but it did make her continuously unsettled if she didn’t keep her eye on it whenever it was around.

❤ Once she realizes that it’s not going to attack her at all (and that it actually likes her) then she lets herself like it, too.

❤ Kaede is extremely level-headed and wouldn’t do anything to harm or villainize an innocent animal, even if originally she thought it was a really strange choice of pet.

❤ She has never asked you to put it away or to not let it out - the snake has always been a part of your house. It’s not a situation that she was trying to prevent, rather a situation that she’s just dealing with.

❤ Will always try and look it in the eyes when she pets it.

She may not have the best knowledge, but she can at least try her best to help you find happiness.

Kirumi is slightly more accommodating, since she can understand a bit better.

After all, she's had many clients with the same issue.

For that, she makes a very simple suggestion.

"Why not increase the size of the things around you to trick your mind into feeling as though you are smaller?"

Surprisingly enough, Gundham was rather quiet. He wasn’t usually one to actively seek out physical affection, so this situation was already strange enough as it is. He rubbed his forearm rhythmically, multicolored eyes taking up a striking interest in the wrinkled bed sheets beneath them, and his typically pale skin almost looked like it had been airbrushed with a baby pink hue. “U-um,” he muttered under his breath, already quiet words muffled even further by the large scarf covering his mouth.

Sonia’s previously cheerful expression melted into one of careful concern, and she scooted her body closer to the other’s after a moment’s hesitation. “Gundham? Is something the matter?” she inquired softly before resting a palm atop his bandaged hand. “If there’s something bothering you, you can always tell me…”

“N-no!” Gundham exclaimed with a sudden ferocity as he snatched his hand away. Immediately realizing that he had raised his voice a little too much, he recoiled back into himself like a wounded puppy. “It’s nothing like that,” he elaborated in a much gentler tone than before. “It’s just...I...I just…”

Sonia found herself at a loss for words for a moment as well - she had never seen the ordinarily prideful man in such a state. She knew that it was impolite to pry, but she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving the other like this. “Just what?” she echoed softly, raising a hand to cup one of those flushed cheeks.

Gundham flinched ever so slightly at the unannounced physical contact, but he made no move to stop his lover’s advancements. “W-would you…” It wasn’t that he had wanted to pause - rather, it was as if his very voice had been abruptly ripped away from him. Damn it...he was feared by countless beings, both mortal and supernatural alike! He shouldn’t be so easily overcome by such a harmless request! “...Would you perform that mortal ac-activity with me again?” he finally managed to choke out.

Sonia blinked obliviously, taking a minute to recall the events the two had participated in during the past week. “Do...do you mean tickling…?”

Judging by how red the other’s face grew at the mere mention of the word, it appeared that her shot in the dark had landed. “If...if that’s what you call it, yes,” Gundham murmured, seemingly trying to bury his head in the protective cocoon his scarf provided.

It was safe to say that Sonia’s heart melted at this downright adorable reaction, and a tender grin spread across her mouth. “Aw, of course I can!” she gushed without truly meaning to - seeing her boyfriend like this was just too cute for her to handle. “There’s no need for you to be so embarrassed over something like that.”

“F-foolish girl! An Overlord such as myself does not fall prey to such trivial enchantments!” Gundham insisted in an attempt to recover some of his lost ego, but it wasn’t very convincing when he still couldn’t bring himself to make eye contact with the other.

Clearly, Sonia didn’t buy the act (if her bubbly giggle was anything to go off of, that is). “Alright then! Lie down so we can do this properly!” she instructed merrily as she gave his chest a delicate prod.

Gundham did as he was told, face practically turning into a radiator with how much heat was pouring off it, laying on his back with his arms crossed like a little beetle stuck on its shell. His legs began fidgeting ever so slightly, feet toying with the top sheet beneath them anxiously. It was clear he was nervous, but not in the typical manner one might expect; this was a giddy sort of nervousness, one a child might experience when playing tag with their friends.

Sonia definitely wasn’t going to take this opportunity for granted, and she took some time to relish in the sight presented before her. The Forbidden One was as red as a tomato, his gaze focusing anywhere but on her own, and his normally carefully guarded body was being offered to her like the greatest gift she ever could have imagined. It made a sense of immense humility blossom within her heart; she felt absolutely honored to be trusted by the other to this extent. Finally, figuring she had kept him waiting long enough, she slipped her hands underneath his shirt and began skittering her well kept nails along the seldom touched flesh.

It didn’t take long at all for Gundham to burst into a flurry of tiny titters, his hands instinctively lowering themselves to push at those of his lover. “Nnnnnh! G-guhuhuhahahaaa!” His smile was much softer than his ordinary sneer, closed eyelids wrinkling at the corners with forced mirth, and his laugh sounded much lighter as well.

“You have such a wonderful laugh, Gundham,” Sonia gushed without really realizing it. “I’m so happy you’ll let me see you like this...all giggly and flustered!” A few giggles of her own mingled with those of her lover’s as she watched his plethora of reactions, her fingers continuing their devious dance along the expanse of quivering flesh.

Gundham didn’t think it was possible for his face to grow any redder than it already was, but this line of complimenting proved him sorely mistaken. He turned to bury his head into one of the many pillows beneath him, hoping that this would succeed in hiding his atypical demeanor, but all this did was result in the earlier scratches turning to gentle kneading. He barked out a laugh as he instinctually brought his knees to his chest, or, rather, into his beloved’s lower back.

Sonia clicked her tongue in mock chastise at this, shaking her head solemnly as if the other was nothing more than a particularly naughty pet. “Trying to hide yourself away from my claws?” she hummed as her formerly adoring smile morphed into one of a much more devious nature. She couldn’t help herself - she took a great fondness in teasing her brooding boyfriend to smithereens. “Silly dear...you know they’ll just find a way to keep on tickling~”

Gundham couldn’t hold back his yelp of surprise when he felt one of those dangerously long nails twirl inside his navel, and he fell into a bundle of chest shaking chortles. Words certainly seemed to hold an immense amount of power over him, what with his frantic clambering to hide his face behind his forearms, so it was no wonder that these sultry laden quips were making him feel weak in the knees. Still, he had to keep his composure. He wouldn’t dare surrender to something so light hearted!

“That’s right, love. Giggle all day!” Sonia cooed as she gradually let up on the area, her fingers idly tapping against the still quaking abdomen. “My goodness, you’re all aflush! I suppose not even the Supreme Overlord of Ice is a match for the Tickle Monster…”

...On second thought, he was surely going to die here. Swallowing down the antsy lump in his throat, Gundham affixed the best glare he could manage given the circumstances against those icy blue eyes. “You...you truly are a wicked enchantress…”

An unusually dark titter slipped from Sonia’s lips as she batted her lashes down at her captive innocently. “But of course~! And now that I’ve got you in my clutches, I have to wonder just what I’ll do with you…” She raised her hands so they were now at her sides, fingers wiggling in anticipation, looking the other up and down like he was the tastiest meal she’d ever laid eyes upon. “I could keep playing with this ticklish tummy for a while…”

More deep chuckles escaped from Gundham as the scribbling on his stomach resumed.

“Maybe I could play piano on your ribs…”

Delicate tapping soon followed, earning the princess a trifle of squirming.

“Maybe I could burrow under your arms…”

Said action won an outright snort.

“I could even play This Little Piggy with your toes~!”

Though she made no actual followthrough to these words, Gundham couldn’t help but bury his feet into the mattress protectively.

“Or maybe…”

The Dark Lord’s heart skipped a beat at the sudden silence that overpowered the room, his gaze trained on the surely rising claws of his demise. He felt so utterly meek in this position, so inconsequential and powerless, and it made an unfamiliar feeling brew in the pit of his stomach. Perhaps this was what humans meant when they referred to another as being bashful…?

“I’ll get at that cute little neck of yours!”

Gundham was rudely tugged away from his inner thoughts by the horrid sensation of...well, he didn’t quite know exactly what it was, but it was enough to make him explode with powerful belly laughter. “AHAHAHAHAHAAAA!” His lower half thrashed to and fro violently as if his very existence itself was determined to escape this predicament. “WH-WHAHAT IS THAHAHAHAHAT?!”

“What, you’ve never had a raspberry before?” Sonia asked dumbfoundedly, momentarily dropping her sadistic creature act. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at things), she recovered just as quickly. “Well then, I’ll guess we’ll just have to make up for it now~!” Preparing herself with a dramatically loud inhalation of breath, she blew against the other’s typically concealed neck once again.

To say that Gundham was hysterical would’ve been a major understatement; his throaty cackles were reverberating off the walls with the intensity of a clap of thunder. “NOHOHOHOHOHOOO!” he wailed desperately as yet another raspberry was delivered, creeping up to the edge of his sanity, clutching the other’s long strands of hair weakly. “IHI YIEHEHEHEHELD!” he cried out at last. “M-MEHEERCEEEHEHEHEE!”

With this dire call for reprieve, Sonia ceased her consensual torment immediately. Her smile melted back into the warm one others were more accustomed to seeing, and she delicately rubbed her thumb underneath the edge of his jawline. “Oh, love...I’m sorry, I got a bit carried away,” she mumbled sheepishly. “I do hope I didn’t go too far...did I?”

Taking some time to steady his breathing to a level he was satisfied with, Gundham gently shook his head. “I...I found that to be quite...entertaining,” he admitted in a hushed whisper, as though he was uttering a forgotten secret, his eyes shifting around the room awkwardly. “Th-thank you, my bunny…”

Sonia felt her own face grow hot at the sound of the beloved nickname, not hesitating to plant a kiss of appreciation on the tip of the other’s nose. “Of course!”

Gundham sighed as he wrapped his arms around her slender frame. She was a devious little minx, that much was for certain, and he’d managed to get tightly coiled around her little finger...

She hates when ‘normal’ people are accepted by ultimates.

Makoto Naegi- Photographer (Mostly wildlife and nature photography, with Sayaka helping him for some animal photography (: trans and bi <3 One of sayaka’s birds nests in his hair like all the time)

Kiyotaka Ishimaru- Ultimate Swordsman (AUTISTIC ICON, has trained in kendo since he was a kid, then was essentially given away to the Fujisaki clan by his very stressed dad. Semiverbal, rarely speaks.)

Chihiro Fujisaki- Ultimate Yakuza (Taka is her bodyguard! His family is in debt to hers, the Fujisaki clan is the most powerful in Japan. trans icon, of course, dates Sayaka! Very direct, though she’s far more delicate and polite when talking to taka, her best friend)

Sakura Oogami- Ultimate Nurse (Works as an EMT- her clan still is in martial arts, so she’s still very buff, she assists in injuries at the family dojo. Autistic Icon)

Asahina Aoi- Ultimate Gamer (ULTIMATE ADHD. streams and has a ton of fun, will ramble while breaking records, demigirl who loves her girlfriend sakura :)

Mukuro Ikusaba- Ultimate Chef (Works best with ‘cheap’ food, and making them taste good. a byproduct of growing up on the streets with junko, and junko being bored of the same old food they dug out of the trash. now works closely with junko for her teams’ nutritional needs! autistic and sapphic.)

Junko Enoshima- Ultimate Team Manager (there are SO many sports she can never get bored, and the professional scene is always changing! prefers coaching womens’ teams, because being an ultimate brings them more publicity and usually higher pay :)

Mondo Oowada- Ultimate Prince (OH MY BOY. trans adhd icon. now the crown prince of Novoselic, with a reagent in his place until he comes of age. His service dog Chuck is a maltese and an absolute sweetheart. Chihiro takes him under her wing to teach leadership. also dates taka later OF COURSE, though they’re poly and I may add more ppl to their relationship later.)

Celestia Ludenburg- Ultimate Musician (specializes in violin, most strings, though she can play any instrument. grew up poor, dedicated herself to an instrument and persona to cope)

Byakuya Togami- Ultimate Musician (Yep. two musicians. two catty trans gay icons about to throw down. they HATE each other and grew up as rivals. specialize in classical, they literally tore a professional orchestra full of grown adults apart trying to make them side with who was the best musician. they’re so good that they’re matched, and Hope’s Peak accepts them as one student and combined ultimate. they room together. they fight. Literally if one of them gets expelled, the other does too, so they’re STUCK. eventually they become literally inseparable and insufferable together like the WORST siblings. I love them.)

Sayaka Maizono- Breeder (animal handler) (Specializes in birds!!!!!! has songbirds on her shoulders all the time. will give unsettling animal facts without realizing they’re unsettling. sends her songbirds to serenade chihiro when they start dating <3)

Yasuhiro Hagakure- Gymnast (you see this tall goof who acts like an older brother to everyone and wonder HOW he’s a gymnast. he’s completely different in competitions, though still lighthearted. becomes a big brother figure to mukuro and junko especially <3 also trans bc i say so.)

Leon Kuwata- Traditional Dancer (he just. kinda hates it. it takes SO much work and effort but he takes to it naturally. his cousin kanon is NOT like in canon, instead she’s helpful. he’d literally rather be doing anything else. doesn’t know how to do anything like... basic either. can’t cook. cant do his own laundry. everything was dedicated to traditional japanese dancing before he attended HPA.)

Toko Fukawa- Engineer (writes schematics and is very good at it. gets VERY upset when her plans go wrong. her notes are orderly and perfect. host for their system!)

Syo- Mechanic (a factive of genocider syo, NOT an actual killer. she’s a protector mainly, and also is more adept at hands on skills when it comes to fixing things, her hands are less shaky. Her notes are a disaster and she does it to spite Toko.)

Hifumi Yamada- (???) (reserve course) Protagonist! My BOY. HIFUMI IS GOOD OKAY. He’s autistic and loves anime and gaming! he’s not particularly ultimate-leveled at them, or anything else! Attending Hope’s Peak as a reserve course student! At one point he joins the student council as a reserve course representative even if he’s only a freshman :) He’s also a moderator in Hina’s livestream chat, under the username of JusticeHammer, fastest ban hammer this side of the internet. He's internet friends with hina and sakura, and doesn’t realize Oh We Go To the same SCHOOL until he bumps into them. and realizes hina doesnt know what he looks like. but sakura does. its hilarious. he’s aroace, and during the year they’re locked in HPA, is in a queer platonic partnership with Hina and Sakura, while they’re dating each other. it’s great.)

Goodbye Despair! (second game)

Peko Pekoyama- Lucky student (ohohoh. her luck relies on her conviction. if she has doubts her bad luck strikes HARD. trans!, was taken in by Fuyuhiko’s family when she was a baby, grew up as just another kid in the family. They all expected Fuyu to go off to HPA on his own and then BOOM acceptance letter)

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu- Programmer (He. gets so angry while coding. He has an array of rubber ducks to talk to and work through his coding issues with. trans of course. Very protective of Peko when people say she doesn’t have a ‘real’ ultimate. ADHD and Autistic)

Sonia Nevermind- Writer (Literary Girl) (Her family immigrated to Japan when she was young! She writes a lot of serial killer novels, murder mysteries and horror and all that! Trans and bi :)

Gundham Tanaka- Detective (YEAH my guy is a detective. still talks Like That. Trans and bi and he and Sonia were kinda-dating (t4t autistic power couple in the making) when things started happening. He spends some time with his cool older sister who he looks up to a LOT. He and Sonia talk through things together a lot, they both have those red string walls, one for murder cases, another for a fictional plot lmao.)

Mahiru Koizumi- Moral Compass (my GIRL. autistic. Her morals rely a lot on people taking responsibility and being reliable, and she ends up having to work through some biases she didn’t realize she had when she arrived at HPA. Is still protective of Hiyoko, though that protectiveness is spread a bit thinner to extend to the rest of the class.)

Hiyoko Saionji- Clairvoyant!!! (HI YES I COULD TALK ABOUT HER FOR DAYS. Has actual visions in dreams and when she suddenly faints, but doesn’t really realize they’re uhh Real Visions for a WHILE. uses her status as an ultimate clairvoyant to trick and bully kids when in school for a LONG time, though her homelife wasn’t great with her grandmother trying to find ways to make her visions more consistent. SHES ALSO 12 WHEN SHE JOINS THE 77TH CLASS. she’s just so advanced in academics and her ultimate is so interesting hope’s peak cant HELP but scout her early. she has SO many issues guys no one appreciates hiyoko enough, autistic gifted kid hiyoko my beloved.)

Akane Owari- Gambler (started gambling to help out her family and Got Good at it. is very very conscious of money and food like all the time. Runs the hope’s peak betting pools once she arrives. these ultimates bet on a lot of things. she ALWAYS wins. until she doesnt!!!)

Mikan Tsumiki- Martial Artist (ohhhh Mikan. Still anxious and clumsy (though not like THAT in canon) and literally no one looks at her and thinks Oh The ULTIMATE martial artist?? it isn’t until you see her in the ring that you understand. She started learning self defense as a kid because her (bad) parents essentially said she had to rely on and protect herself and no one else would help.)

Kazuichi Souda- Pop Idol (OH TRANS ICON? he’s nervous and paranoid about Everything still, though now it’s like. oh the entire world is always watching my every move this is Okay (: has the brightest neon album eras. he literally keeps up a like. weird chad persona when interacting with people because he’s masking how hard he’s constantly just internally screaming.)

Nagito Komaeda- Soldier (AHAHAH my mans got issues problems disorder he’s a messssss, this trans guy, this absolute gay. this boy leveled a city of thousands of people with his own hands and some bombs. Still has medical issues, but most of his like. treatments and medicine is hold hostage as long as he stays in line. believes the ends justify the means and anyone who dies to him is obviously weak, because look at him! he’s weak, but that doesn’t matter because he doesn’t have to be the strongest, he just has to be stronger than the weakest scum.)

Chiaki Nanami- Heir (OOF. Agender, uses any pronouns. Doesn’t really. enjoy being the heir. grew up with Byakuya in the same circles. she treats the economy and stock market and stuff like games. enjoys gaming but isn’t good at them. collects so many things. has halls full of collections. Her parents stopped controlling her once she was able to prove she had more money than them and could literally bankrupt them if she wanted.)

Hajime Hinata- Baseball Star (Chiaki’s best friend, his family was upper middle class until he hit it BIG as a baseball star. wants to do BIG things and wants to attend hope’s peak more than anything!! Doesn’t really think of baseball as his THING, just a means to an end! trans :)

Teruteru Hanamura- Biker Gang Leader (started with shaking down some jerks who didn’t pay their food and drink tabs at his mama’s restaurant. now he RUNS their tiny town. His siblings are essentially gang mascots, he works hard to keep them out of trouble (while bringing them to like. meetings where he ends up beating a dude almost to death. its fine). most of what he does it to get more money to keep the restaurant afloat and care for his mama with her health conditions.)

Nekomaru Nidai- Fashionista (the drama. the CHAOS. most people are like ohhh we can never understand this artistic genius when he’s literally just. vibing and has ADHD and a love for coffee. Works a lot on accessible clothing lines for disabled people! Also he and Kazuichi work together sometimes, Nekomaru is good at calming Kaz down and seeing like, the root of whatever problem and making it better. ALSO A TRANS ICON and just flaunts it.)

Imposter- In the hope’s peak days they are impersonating Ryota Mitarai, as a part of the 77th class. In the Killing Game they impersonate Mondo Oowada as the Ultimate Prince. They’re doin’ their best.

Ibuki Mioda- (???) (Izuru Kamakura) Protagonist! Gundham Tanaka’s older sister (though they’re in the same school year). Nonbinary and using just. an array of pronouns alongside she/her, and jokingly fights with gundham for neopronouns like MOM said it’s MY TURN on the rawrself pronouns. She attends the reserve course to stay at her brother’s side. She dresses loudly and acts even louder because !!! she wants to stand out!! in the middle of this drab reserve course hell!!  but when things go down, she wants to be someone, to be worthy of being her amazing brother’s big sister. so she accepts some offers.

NON-KILLING GAME:

Ryota Mitarai- Ultimate Analyst (stays in his room. He’s terrified of the outside world but fascinated by it. watches hope’s peak academy through security feeds, picking up on little details. he just wants to understand things but never looks at the big picture.)

Chisa Yukizome- Ultimate Boxer (Homeroom teacher!! She’s working really hard and believes in everyone! Some are intimidated by talent, but she’s never hurt anyone outside of the ring! Dating Kyosuke)

Juzo Sakakura- Ultimate Student Council President (Has anger issues, though his work at reigning them in assisted in becoming an Ultimate. Was responsible for security and the Hope’s Peak student council. Dating Kyosuke)

Kyosuke Munakata- Ultimate Housekeeper (Meticulous, works himself to the BONE even if he’s good enough to not have to do that. Is working on establishing another Hope’s Peak! Dating Chisa and Jozu!!!)

Seiko Kimura- Ultimate Blacksmith (GIVE MY GIRL KNIVES!! She’s an anxious gal, always wearing a facemask that filters the air in her forge because she has some respiratory problems. she prefers making more decorative pieces like an artist, but sometimes can create utilitarian pieces or tools to fit specific needs. Still a doormat)

Ruruka Ando- Ultimate Pharmacist (She constantly asks Seiko for new tools for her developments in medicine, saying its all for the advancement of humanity, so Seiko denying any request is SELFISH, though she never thinks to make anything for seiko’s health issues. Dating Izayoi. Specializes in medicine for mental health. Not Doing Great :)

Sonosuke Izayoi- Ultimate Confectioner (He loves sweets. LOVES them. Creates things that look plain, ordinary. but taste so GOOD you CRY and maybe ascend for a little bit. sometimes Ando makes cool new drugs to put in the sweets, who knows! It’s a mystery! He always has like. a huge refrigerated case of fresh cakes, and constantly has a lollipop in his own specialty recipe in his mouth.)

So happily, and excitedly you raced around, a bright beaming smile on your face that nothing could take away. “Ah, Teru! Did you-” You cut yourself off seeing he had indeed gotten the eggs. “Wow, you’re a lot faster than I thought.” “Y/N, I know this place like the back of my own hand. I know where everything is!” Though tempted to make a lude joke he couldn’t bring himself to do so, not wanting to accidently sour your mood. Placing the carton in the basket you perused the wall filled to bursting with of bags of flour, needing to find the right one.

“I must ask though, will there be anything special to go along with this cake? A confession perhaps?” He lightly nudged your ribcage with his elbow wanting to make sure you had caught his words and they had not fallen on deaf ears with you daydreaming. A light blush dusted your cheeks as you playfully slapped his arm away. “I could have just asked you to help me get ingredients, what in the world made me think it was a good idea to tell you it was for my crush?” “Y/N, that hurts!” Placing a hand over his heart he took a step back, smiling. “I thought we were best friends!?” Then he smirked. “There’d be no point in hiding it anyway. Miss Princess Nevermind’s birthday is coming up. Of course it’d be for her… And you’re awful at hiding your feelings. Truthfully you had actually tried confessing to Sonia before, but it never worked out. You’d always get caught up in other things mostly due to your lack of time management. The only time you could keep time was when baking. You tried bringing it up in every day conversation but it seemed some dilemma broke out between your classmates and like the amazing, dutiful princesses she was, Sonia would leap into the chaos trying to take control of it all alongside your class president Chiaki and honorary classmate Hajime Hinata. The closest you had come to confessing to Sonia was when you had baked a Baumkuchen and placed it alongside a note in a box. A note confessing your feelings, of how you had tried telling her before but it never worked out, how she didn’t have to like you back you just wanted her to know since you had been trying to for so long. You wanted to tell her before she left for a short trip back home but due to poor timing on your part you missed her, you tried mailing your gift but she got back before the pastry could get to her. You thought about attempting a similar plan again, but your timing would just get in the away again knowing how bad it was.

Maybe you could get it out this time? When you give her the cake you were determined to tell her! Surely there would be minimal chaos for Sonia’s birthday, and surely, she’d show up to class, so it just had to work out! With a renewed sense of perseverance, you marched onto campus, bags of ingredients in hand to your lab, a kitchen perfect for baking anything and everything you could ever want. You would do this! “Ah, Y/N! Excuse me, Tanaka!” From the corner of your eye you spotted Sonia trotting towards you, leaving behind Gundham and Kazuichi who she seemed to not even acknowledge. Immediately the two started bickering, Kazuichi asserting Gundham scared Sonia off while Gundham… was being Gundham and coated his words in such flowery language you had not an idea of what he was saying. “Hey Nevermind!” “You’re back! I love it!” Seeing the stars in her eyes, you felt as if your heart was gently melting chocolate, so warm and sweet. “May I watch? I’d like to know why there’s a hole in the middle!” “Why don’t you bake with me then? It’ll be fun!” “Certainly! Let’s be on our way then!” She took one of the bags and held your now free hand in her own as she led you your bakery.

“Alright! First to measure the ingredients!” You felt so giddy seeing Sonia place an apron on, this was the first time you’d be baking together! “First we’ll start with the eggs!” You showed Sonia step by step how to separate the egg whites from the yoke using only the shells. You knew she knew nothing given how she’d ask you so much about your craft. It was then you recalled one of your past conversations, how she exclaimed how she never cooked or baked given her servants always did that, and how she now taken interest because of you. That was one of the many things you so admired about her. How she had an insatiable appetite for learning, not only for her people but for herself as well. You tried holding back a giggle, hearing her squeak, accidently breaking the egg. “Here, like this.” You stood behind her, placing your hands atop her own, taking her through the motions, pointing out how much pressure you applied to the egg. You set about measuring other ingredients, showing her how to use the measuring cups and the like.

In several mixing bowls you separated most of the ingredients into each and turned on the mixers. “And now while it’s mixing we’ll add the yoke and sugar mixture to the butter mixture slowly. Then when all this is done mixing we’ll add the egg whites. We do this part by hand because the mixer even on the slowest speed can’t mix it properly. I’ll be using a technique called folding. It’s where you use the spatula or spoon or whatever and-” Sonia so tenderly smiled as you explained, even showing her the technique. You always got so excited when speaking of baking and you were so confident! She dreamily sighed and nodded showing she was still paying attention. “- that way we lose some of the volume so we can get those thin layers Baumkuchen is so famous for!” “Baking truly is a science, it’s no wonder you pick up so quickly! I’m impressed!” “Huh?” You confusedly looked to her as you removed the kettles from the machines. “You’re so smart, baking truly is a science in of itself! When I tutor you, you always learn so quickly, now I know why!” “A-ah, well… thank you.” She smiled even brighter seeing how your ever-present blush darkened and how you became a little sheepish while still being so confident in what you were doing.

“Now for this part, I’ll need your help. See the paper we placed the ground up almonds and flour on? I need you to slowly pour that in while I mix.” “Yes! Most certainly!” “I appreciate the enthusiasm, but remember, very slowly.” Suddenly in the next moment, your vision was clouded, and you couldn’t see. “Ah! I’m so sorry!” “You alright?” You waved at the air with one hand, the other holding up your shirt to cover your face. The white soon settled and your found both of you absolutely covered in powder. “I am, but not the almonds and flour…” She seemed upset, but still smiled so naturally. “It’s alright.” You patted yourself down trying to get some of the powder off. “That’s why I always have extra ingredients, we’ll just have to measure more. Another technique in baking is flouring. You dust flour on the rolling pin, so the dough doesn’t stick to it. You’ll be an ace baker!” She simply stared at you for a moment before that beautiful laughter bubbled up. Her eyes were closed, and she held up one of her hands, partly covering her mouth. She just… looked so gorgeous. Neither of you noticed how you had stopped walking. Your kindness was certainly one of your best traits. You could get upset when needed but you were always so cool headed and patient. Even if you weren’t sure how, you’d try fixing situations, like trying to cheer up a person feeling down. She knew she messed up, but seeing you try to make the best of this was simply astonishing and adorable.

“Now that you poured in the almond and flour mixture, want to try folding and mixing?” “Yes! And I won’t mess up this time! I’ve studied how you do it and I think I know how.” You took a step back and let her. And there was something else you love so much. Her tenacity and determination. No matter how many times she was knocked down, Sonia always got back up and she was better than ever, always willing to tackle any situation. Though, you couldn’t help your chuckle that seeped out. “Harder than it looks, huh.” “Y-yes. It very much is.” Placing one hand on the heavy bowl, you placed the other on one of her hands and helped her mix. “You do this so effortlessly with only one hand!? Is that why you’re so toned!?” “Toned? I well-” You didn’t get the chance to finish, being cut off, surprised by Sonia pointing at your arm. “You are very toned, Y/N. Strong. And I promise not to tell anyone.” “Thank you!” You dropped to your knees letting go of the breath you didn’t even realize you were holding. “You really scared me for a moment there, Nevermind.” “You need not worry Y/N. You shall always be safe with me!” She placed a hand on your cheek, her thumb gently caressing you. “… BAKING! We-we were baking, RIGHT!” You covered both your hands over your face you swiftly marched back to the bowl and began mixing again. “Now, for the part that makes Baumkuchen special, how to bake it, aka…” You gently tapped your pointer fingers against the large bowl as a makeshift drum roll. Then you threw your arms out in the direction of a machine in a corner of the room. “Why there’s a hole in the middle of the cake and how we get the rings that make it look like the inside of a tree!” Sonia raced to the machine, excitedly looking it over. “First we pour the batter in the half cylinder.” She eagerly watched as you continued. “And see the window on the door?” Pressing a button an orange light emanated from the back. “That is the roller and behind THAT is the flames.” You then opened the door. “And while this is open the flames are covered. The roller itself can be pulled up and down like a lever, forward… goes into the batter, then back up into the oven, so we can close the door and let it bake. And just watch, the batter’ll turn into this bright orange color. Then when it’s like that I’ll open the door, place it back in the batter, bake again, and we repeat the process till we have our tree ring cakes!” “Amazing!” “And best part is, because of how big this machine is, we get twelve cakes for you!” Though Sonia was elated at the though of eating so many cakes you had made together, she was even more glad seeing how you talked through the process so happily.

“Now with the last layer baked, we can cut and let them cool.” You held a knife against the long cake letting the roller spin and do the work as you just held the knife. You didn’t even need to measure to get twelve evenly sized cakes. You slid the cakes off the roller placing them on wire racks to cool. With your hands on your hips you took a step back. “Say, care for some chocolate? We can have the cakes plain, but chocolate is commonly placed on top. Oh! I can show you how to get a mirror like shine! Ah, and we can use candy molds to make chocolate pieces to place on top and we could drizzle some white chocolate for designs.” “Yes! Let’s keep baking! I want to do more with you!” “Awesome! In fact, I have Novoselic chocolate if you’re interested.” “That’d be lovely. Thank you, Y/N.” “I, heh heh, you don’t have to thank me. It’s only natural that I want to use only the best ingredients.” “Truly!? That’s fantastic news! Ah, perhaps once you become a famous baker, you could endorse Novoselic chocolate and wine! With the chocolate melted you set about pouring it into molds and glazing it over a few of the cakes before placing it all into the refrigerator. Now all that was left was clean up. And there was an awful lot to clean, but it was all a part of baking. You rather enjoy this actually. After the excitement of running around and baking, it was calm and relaxing to clean, a sort of cool down period after the heat of the kitchen. “Hmm, hey, Nevermind, you got some chocolate on your cheek. Let me get it, since your hands are all wet from washing dishes. With your thumb you wiped off the chocolate before licking it, not wanting to dirty the supplies you were collecting

Perhaps… perhaps you got too relaxed. You felt your hands gently being pulled away from your face only to see Sonia. You fell silent, your mind going blank. You chastised yourself for reacting so much when you should have just played it cool.  You froze as she leaned in, and… she kissed you on the cheek. “You had some chocolate on your cheek too.” She giggled, lifting you to your feet as your face flushed such a bright red. “My heart can’t take this.” You rested your face in your hand, still just wanting to momentarily disappear from how fast your heart raced.

“Evening already?” “Yeah, guess I forgot to warn you. Baking can take a while.” “Well then, let’s go get dinner and catch a movie.” “I know this traditional restaurant downtown, and I think a new drama came out recently.” “I know of it! That sounds lovely.” Taking her hand, you lead the way. As you exited the campus you spotted Teru chatting with Nagito before abruptly stopping, winking, and giving you a thumbs up.

It was a nice evening much like all other times you had hung out. Mostly some chatting, learning about your respective home countries and traditions.

The next day you had woken up excitedly, finally, it was Sonia’s birthday, and you were going to confess this time! You took the best cake to class only to find, as usual, chaos had ensued, several actually. Mostly the usual rivalries. So much for the others being calm and giving Sonia, Chiaki and Hajime a day off. You placed the cake on Sonia’s desk while you sat on the one next to her’s. Then something caught your ear. “Miss Nevermind! Who do you love!?” Quite bold- Wait. At first you assumed Kazuichi meant between him and Gundham, but instead both looked shellshocked. Sonia simply walked away, standing beside you. She gestured to you. “I just told you, my partner.” A long quiet squeak like nose escaped you, like air seeping out of a balloon as she kissed you on the cheek. “Y/N. Not only do I love them, they’re already growing into a model ruler for Novoselic.” Teruteru devilishly smiled, taking a seat at the desk you sat on, enjoying the show. “I- Wait, WE’RE DATING!? WE’RE PARTNERS!?” Gundham took a step forward. “How can one begin a mating ritual without knowing you’re doing so?” Kazuichi then jumped up out of his seat. “HOW CAN YOU DATE SOMEONE LIKE MISS NEVERMIND AND NOT KNOW!?” Both you and Soina looked to one another, baffled. “Y/N, you asked me out. Do you not remember?” “I… I’ve tried? Like? Thousands of times? But? It all failed?” “I know.” “… Please explain, I’m so confused right now!” Taking your hands into hers, she looked to you with sparkles in her eyes. “You had sent a Baumkuchen home, proving your worth by it not being poisoned, gifting it to my family and servants. They were also impressed by how persistent you were in confessing despite all other times ending in failure and with all the difficulties and trouble you’d have to go to, to mail something to such an unknown country! They sent me your note back, and now I finally get the tree cake I never got before!” “oh… so that actually worked.” Your blush darkened with each moment. “well… at least I made a good first impression.” “Yes, yes you did!” It was then you noticed how Teru was so desperately attempting to protect your cake from Akane. “Uh, we better eat it then before Akane gets to it.” “Akane?” Sonia flipped around, pointing to the woman. “Halt right there! Only I and my partner shall eat my cake!”

As you watched the chaos ensue you realized that actually was a while ago… And after that Sonia started talking to you more and started tutoring you and you started hanging out more. Maybe… maybe you should have noticed Sonia’s feelings for you sooner. At least you knew you were together now. And now that you knew, you were determined to dive into your studies so you could be a worthy partner for both Sonia and her people.
