ok thank you for explaining! i think im still a little confused bc i thought clicking the "dont show mature content" toggle or however its phrased is how you curate your dash just in case someone reblogs someone they dont usually reblog? like for example if a blog that normally posts cute stuff reblogs something horror themed you can make sure not to see it instead of having to unfollow the cute blog? and thats different from blocking tags because the cute blog might not tag that post as violence or death or w/e even if the original posting person did? but i think maybe i just dont understand smthing about the site and ill figure it out by using it more. it took me a while just to figure out that reposting and reblogging were referring to different things so i spent a long time thinking that reblogging someone's art was bad here lol. thank you again!

If you mark a post as mature it hides it from everyone who has that setting enabled. If someone marks my post as mature it essentially black lists it. So if you think “I don’t like this I’m going to mark it mature” you have marked it mature for every single user on this platform. You have taken someone’s content and added a “Do Not Go Here” sign to every single user on this platform, not just you. If you don’t like a topic (we’ll use horror as an example) block the tag instead and then on your dash any horror that comes up will not be visible for YOU and only YOU. Adding a community label makes it the poster’s problem and blocks it for EVERYONE, not just you.

I love the little interactions we have in comments and tags sometimes. It's kind of like a casual greeting. If I like/reblog your post it's like I'm waving at you across the street and if I add something in the tags I'm complementing your outfit! (this is different for every mutual btw, everyone else don't get confused!!) Also I'm still not over that BakuDeku fic you recommended to me btw, it literally destroyed me!

I like being on tumblr because I get to interact with people and exchange ideas about my favorite shows and characters. It's very fun and I get to see and learn new things too and I enjoy my time here.

ok so we have seen over and over again people's assumptions about how gg main characters's instagrams would look like but how do you think their secret tumblr blogs would be? 👀

hmm! i just went over tumblr in general, because i don’t think all of them would have ‘secret’ tumblrs per say? everyone’s thing under the cut, cause it got SO long. i did not mention chuck because i don’t rlly see chuck as having a tumblr in any universe tbh - i feel like he would think it takes away from his businessy vibe or something.

dan's main would be something with a ts eliot url, like, a snippet from one of his poems, or it would be a whitman url, a snippet from a poem again (i see him with a whitman url of some kind & maybe his blog title is an eliot reference.) dan would 100% have the whole dark academia thing going in some ways, i think his blog would be organised as a grid, and he would reblog pictures of libraries, museums, occasionally of art, and also, quotes. so many quotes. so much literature. if you've been on tumblr long enough you know exactly the kind of blog i'm talking about.

dan's tumblr sideblog, on the contrary, would have nothing to link it to him. it'd probably be the tumblr default theme, pastel colours or something... i feel like dan is the specific genre of trans kid who uses a different set of pronouns online for anonymity purposes and then goes "wait a minute i like these pronouns BETTER". his url would be something extremely mundane and random like coffeeaddict779 or something, and it would be all #vent and #dont reblog. nobody who's following his sideblog knows what his main is, and vice versa.

serena would i think have one of those "be kind, do no harm :)" kind of hipster tumblr blogs, except she's incredibly sincere. she wouldn't have a sideblog, i don't think? and i don't think she'd attach her name to it in any way, probably just pronouns in bio and maybe a 'call me S'. she and dan would be mutuals on dan's main! her blog will be very, uh. aesthetic pictures, reblogs of dolphin videos and music and WIP art videos and anything else that'll catch her eye. she'll tag blair in fashion vids, nate in sailing posts, dan in literary stuff, and vanessa in film related/photography related things. she's having fun! every now and then she'll post a vent post but it's extremely vague and it's either something everyone who knows her irl already knows about her ('i hate my mom so much') or something that says practically nothing ('i am so worried about my brother and wish i could do more to help him.')

jenny's fashion inspo blog!!!! what more do you want me to say. she'd make it big in the fashion community and get anons all the time and she'd probably also have an etsy where she sells things she's sewn and made. everyone sort of knows she's an up and coming designer and she'd find a good community online hopefully!!! her blog would be something simple, with a url like jennydesigns or something (i bet that's taken rn, i havent checked) and her theme would be one of those themes that allows for u to have big images. she would probably post vents in the same way serena does, tag them #personal or #rambles, and have that neat code that allows for the tag to be filtered out whenever anyone views her page on desktop, you know?

i think eric would not have anything specific that he posts. he would just reblog random things - memes, things he finds interesting, jenny's original posts, stuff serena tags him in, cat videos, lgbtq+ positivity, etc. he'd try and stay out of drama (i think he'd turn anon off eventually.) he’d also post a lot of music reblogs or links, i feel?

vanessa's main blog would be one where she posts her own photos and films. because she's professional about it, it'd probably just be @ vanessaabrams. she'd have a sideblog specifically for reblogging other people’s work because she wants to support other artists, and it would be vanessareblogs or something like that, and her bio would mention “main tumblr @ vanessaabrams”. she’d be much adored in the photo/film community and just in general, because she’s one of the few people who hypes up other creators all the time and leaves nice comments in tags and all that. every now and then serena reblogs vanessa’s photography onto her blog and it almost always blows up, but vanessa doesn’t mind. i don’t think vanessa would have a vent blog or even a personal tag, she gives me big ‘i wanna keep my business totally off the net’ kind of vibes.

nate’s blog would be a lot like serena’s except, uh, more openly wanderlusty i think. a LOT of ocean reblogs. every now and then he reblogs keroauc quotes from dan which the girls find extremely hilarious. he talks a lot about sailing and gets a lot of sailing anons. he’d reblog a lot of positivity (mostly because he knows his friends are following him and he wants to brighten up their dash.) dan and vanessa jokingly dm him weed aesthetic posts all the time, but every time they do he reblogs and tags it ‘sent to me’ or somehting like that, and they cant decide whether to be flattered or embarrased. i think nate would also attract a lot of anons who ask for advice and it is something he never expected people coming to him for, but he definitely listens and shares whatever he’s got to say all the same. he’s this blog who should be weirdly niche but everyone sort of knows him and likes him.

saving the best for the last, lol. i have SO many thoughts about blair’s tumblrs. 

i think she’d have a main tumblr that’s solely for classic film stuff (audrey! and more) and that’d be @ blairwaldorf, because, well, duh. i think she’d pay for a tumblr theme and get one of those really fancy and cute ones, like a floralcodes ms paint theme. i think she’d also have a sideblog that’s less serious, where she’d reblog things from tv shows, reblog things serena or nate have tagged her in, write her own meta for fandoms she’s in, just generally be a multifandom mess with a #personal tag but nothing too personal. it would still be classy, because she’s blair, but on this blog, she’s just a girl having fun.

and then she’d have a THIRD blog, a sideblog that doubles up as a vent blog. and this one isn’t linked to her other two in an obvious way, nobody knows it’s her, etc. on here she’d probably post a lot about her ed (but i think in a  ‘i am struggling and i want to bitch’ way, not in a thinspo way - that’s a whole conversation i have no spoons for, so let’s not go there), she’d post about her insecurities and worries but it would be extremely untraceable. she’d have a fancy theme on this one too, despite it being a vent blog. 

hm. now im thinking of the potential of like. dan and blair interacting super frequently on their vent blogs and neither of them knowing it’s the other person!

@jessahmewren - ok, as far as really delicious steamy smut goes, the queen fandom absolutely does NOT deserve this author. each fic (which can be found on ao3 here) drive me absolutely crazy with how well they’re written, and in the case of smut, with how hot they are. every fic is the perfect blend of sexy sexy smut and tender fluff!

@word-babble - what can i say about babbs that hasn’t been said by me to her in the strictest confidence of our tender love letters to each other? besides being a perfect darling and dear friend, her writing is tender, tender, tender. her masterlist holds some of my very favorite fics in the queen fandom, particularly her maylor works. she writes angst so well and it always ends up in such sweet (and sometimes ~sexy~) resolutions that leave you soft and wanting more.

@brian-maybe-not - the queen fandom is utterly undeserving of the cute, funny, really sexy fics by this beauty. winter’s roger and ben fics are my favorite, because i’m a sucker for the way they’re written with such sassy, teasing, incredibly hot personalities. fics that get you right into the story and create a believable setting while also delivering in the fluff and smut departments? we stan this whole masterlist!

@supersonicfreddie - the range of cat’s fics in her masterlist leave me dizzy with how much good smut and soft tender fluff they include. her professor!gwil fics were the first thing that made me realize that maybe i have a thing for the professor au, and her series “a new place to begin” is absolutely perfect.

@punkgeekchic​ - sammy’s fics all have one thing in common: they’re sweeter than apple pie and twice as nice! she writes angst with the sweetest fluffy resolutions, and it’s like the boys themselves are giving you bear hugs. her dad!joe fics are so cute and fluffy, and her penchant for including puppies in her fics for the boys to cuddle is an absolute delight. go read through her masterlist!

A year of being a writblr

The end of the year is usually a time to reminiscence about the year itself. So I can say it was a crazy year. I have this blog since August 2016 even if I have no memory of making it such a long time ago. I actually really started to use a year later and since this January I am part of writblr. I became a better writer because of the feedback I got. I learned to code to beat this side and have something fancy for my WIPs. I made you accustomed to my many WIPs. I rose from 15 followers to 590 followers minus the many pron bots, nazis, terfs and “pray the gay away” bullshit blogs that I blocked from following me. I made new friends on here and IRL. I participated in NaNoWriMo the first time and strangely succeeded. With all this I wanted to say this: @nanaschreibt : If I remember correctly you were one of the first who followed me after I stepped into writblr. I consider you a friend and your input helped me so many times to get the writing done or develop new ideas. I loved your book and I am looking forward to your next one. You know you have to tell me when it is about to publish, right? @eternalwritingstudent : You were also one of the first I got into contact within writblr. I love your writing and enjoyed our conversations a lot. I am curious what else is up with Freedom, Bernie and all your other MC’s. I hope we will read more on here or you need a Wattpad, sweets. @lady-redshield-writes : I have no idea how long we are following each other and I feel really bad I never really got into your WIPS because they all sound so rad. But I love about you, that you always take your time to reblog other writer’s stuff with your thoughts. I always look forward to your reblogs because I want to know what your thoughts are about the piece of writing. And without you, Nesryn probably wouldn’t have come to life so fast. @kainablue : We aren’t following each other for a long time as far as I remember but you are always curious about other writers WIPs and that’s something I love about you. You are way better in keeping in touch with other writers than I am. And yeah, you will get more about Rogel next year. I promise. The same counts for @elaynab-writing you have this curious energy and are willing to read through lots of tags once something sparked your interest. Never loose this, ok? @wildwestiewrites and @fukusigma : I honestly have no idea if a piece of your writing crossed my dash but you two always make sure to send in an ask when I post these OC asks and stuff and show me people actually see my posts. @djmunden : You are awesome. Don’t stop writing. @jaimistoryteller  : I have no freaking how you are so productive with all the issues in your life but I highly respect you for that. I hope you get your cute puppy soon and your shop will be a success. And thanks for all the reblogs that got me out there. And all the others who regularly interact with my original post I forgot now: You folks keep me running.  Your WIPs and art are important. Never stop doing what you do. actually the most annoying thing about mobile is the camera. it sometimes glitches especially during battle and i find myself stuck facing a mountain bc the camera. so i see why people might complain. also sadly NO :( i wish!! i have an old laptop i thought of using but idk if it can handle it. i think i wanna try it out though. do you use a laptop or pc?

i actually didn’t know much about voltron when i first started watching. i only knew about shiro because an acquaintance had posted about his gay announcement but i never checked it out. i actually got into it in a funny way... i was on yt one day and i saw a video titled ‘are keith and lance gay?’ and i was like who the fuck are keith and lance? then because i’m such a gay person myself i decided to check it out and i saw keith and was like... wow that’s a cute boy... then i saw their dynamic and said WOAH. and well... i just started watching and got hooked and i thought everything was neat and fun so i watched up until season 3 without engaging in any fan activities so i had no idea what people were saying...,, then i did and i was greeted with the shit storm. and the rest is history. but i can imagine it must’ve been so fun... the excitement of not knowing where the story will go and getting new content and being in the fandom while it was alive despite everything.... ahhh how did you find out about the show?

The first character you loved:

YOI: Yuuri K. When he started crying bc he lost and thought he was a disappointment, I knew I would love him. So relatable and sad, I just wanted to ug and cry with him right there in the men’s bathroom.

MHA: I actually did not like MHA the first time I watched it (hard 2 believe since it has taken over my life now), but I remember the first time I watched it I thought All Might was funny. He’s my absolute favorite character by far now, so I’ll go with him.

Voltron: Either Pidge or Hunk, can’t quite remember. I thought their antics in the first episode were really cute.

The character you never expected to love so much:

YOI: Yurio. Thought he was an insufferable prick, then I realized he’s just an edgy dork.

MHA: Kirishima, I thought he was plain, now he’s my best boy and I can’t believe I ever doubted the guy. Mina as well bc I just thought she was a weird pink creature thing but now I realize what an energetic, fun-loving talented gal she is. If only studying was one of her strong suites!

Voltron: Lance, you guys have no idea how hard I SIGHED every time he spoke in the first couple episodes, now I stan for him. Send help.

YOI: Georgi needs to get a grip on reality. Luckily he’s shown to be dating someone new at the end of the series. Proud of the guy, even though he’s a hetero disaster

MHA: Bakugou (Iove him but he need a slap), Endeavor (I’m scared he’d hurt me though). I’d punt the grapist into the sun. Seriously he is so out of pace in my hero. I understand how he got into the school, I’m not saying he doesn’t belong in UA, he just seems so out of place in the universe itself. Like the show isn’t really super pervy and it’s a fun show and interesting shonen, yet this weird, and frankly, dated stereotypical gross character pops up and acts like a predator. Not funny. I only ever laughed at two or so things he had ever said, he’s not even a funny perv.

Voltron: Ok, I know I have been reblogging Lotura pics, they are cute but I also don’t 100% trust Lotor. I still feel like every one should be keeping a closer eye on him. While I genuinely believe he doesn’t mean harm, I also think they began to trust him a wee bit soon and that he does not totally have a peaceful mindset. So I wanna maybe lightly bonk Allura’s and maybe some of the other’s heads for not being a bit more suspicious.

Three OTPs:

MHA: Tododeku, and also Bakushima. MHA is such a perfect show for shipping. I have had a total of 8-9 OTPS all my life (while I have tons of ships I have certain standards for a ship to be OTP status in my mind), and 2 are from My Hero.

YOI: Podium family dynamic, and Victor and Chris’ friendship, with that dash of one-sided competition vibe.

MHA: I can’t pick. I love everyone’s relationships. Deku and All Might and their mentor/student dynamic. Aizawa the hobo and his 20 children. Bakusquad, Dekusquad. Mirio and Tamaki, the bestest buds ever. Mina and Ochako’s friendship as well (they are always together in official art and seems to be very close friends, I’m 👌close to shipping them but I do like tsuchako).

Voltron: Space Dad and his adopted chidren, the original three (Lance, Hunk and Pidge), but also Hunk and Pidge as the team geniuses and repairman/repairwoman. And Allura and her wacky “uncle” Coran, who now is  wacky uncle to all.

So I just reached my next thousand and I am.... speechless. This is CRAZY. I made this blog in 2012 and all I wanted to do was express my love for this show through my gifsets and posts. It was definitely much smaller than any other fandom I had ever been in at the time but I think that’s also what made me feel so welcome.

There were some people I ended up talking to and becoming friends with but some that I never talked to and just simply admired. A lot of these blogs are inactive now but every single one of them has made me what I am today. I figured I should show my appreciation for a majority of these people. I will DEFINITELY miss out on a few people because the list is, believe it or not, quite long despite the size of the fandom. Anyway, here I go! (this is in no particular order btw)

I’m gonna start with @kinneysexual. Oh my goodness. Where do I even begin with Cami? When I joined the fandom, I think you were probably the most popular qaf blog/giffer (well you were to me, anyway). I was SO inspired by all your wonderful and unique gifsets and I’m pretty sure I would just stare and stare at them for hours when I could. I’m not kidding, I was so so so impressed and in awe of your talent and ideas. I don’t think we ever talked privately but anytime you reblogged one of my sets or mentioned me in a post, I would just DIE of happiness because you were honestly my QUEEN hahahaha. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have gone on a massive giffing spree when I made this blog. Thank you.

That stands for Frequently Unasked Questions because people rarely ask me any of these so FAQ would be a lie.

Q: Sempai, how do I get you to notice me?! A: Send me a message or ask! I don’t have to be following you to do so! Also, don’t be shy to tell me about some content you think I might enjoy. I basically only follow people who tag descriptively. Generally this means, at minimum, fandom, pairings, and marking explic!t content. I don’t have any triggers, but I do have some strong squicks, and I look to be able to filter those out as well. 

Q: You used to follow me and now you don’t, did I do something wrong? A: Almost certainly not. If you don’t usually tag your Tumblr, that’s probably the reason why I unfollowed, so don’t brood any more than that. I follow a lot of blogs and I rely on people tagging well to help my blacklist keep up by filtering out shows I don’t watch and content I don’t want to see. I’m not angry at you for not tagging--it’s your blog--but if I can’t figure out a filter to keep stuff I don’t want on my dash, I unfollow.

Tumblr also glitches a lot. I have been on both sides of a Tumblr-induced unfollow. If I used to follow you, now I’m not, and you tag well, message me to check in! It’s totally possible I don’t realize that Tumblr made me unfollow you. Fuckin’ Tumblr, man. I’m also always willing to explain an unfollow if you want to know why.

Q: Why did you block me? A: Almost everyone I’ve blocked is because they blocked me first, so uh, check that first of all. If you’re a fairly block-happy person, maybe you don’t even remember doing it. I block anyone who I discover has blocked me. If you no longer wish to block me, you can reach out through another person or perhaps an anon ask to tell me that you want to be cool now and we’ll be cool. Simple as that.

I’ve also preemptively blocked people who expressed an explicit desire not to interact with people who ship my ships or have my opinions. Eg, making or reblogging a post that says “kaka//saku do not interact”. These blocks are my attempt to make YOU comfortable. I respect people’s desires to curate their Tumblr experience. If you think this may be the reason I blocked you and you are ok with me interacting with you, reach out to me through a third party and I’ll unblock.

Another possibility is that you’re a troll who has left me or one of my friends a personal attack, uses slurs, etc. Have you done that? Don’t be like that.

Third possibility is a mistake--I’ve mistaken you for a spam bot, or Tumblr has done something wonky, etc.

Q: I ship your NOTP. Do you hate me? A: Why would I hate you just because you have an incorrect opinion of whether two fictional characters should rub their genitals together? No. I don’t hate you just because you ship my NOTP, and you are completely welcome to follow me, message me, etc.

Q: So Sasu//Saku is fine then right and it’s just a matter of taste? A: Haha no canon ending SS is garbage, let’s not get carried away here, I’m just saying I think you can ship it and still be a good/nice person. Just because I don’t shipper bash doesn’t mean I can’t and won’t point out everything that’s wrong with SS as written in canon. This is called “literary criticism” and “critical engagement with mass media” and is something I won’t apologize for enjoying.

Q: LMAO why do you care so much about a cartoon for teenage boys? A: Two possible answers here. One is that you can ridicule basically any hobby or special interest this way--”why do you care so much about some overpaid men kicking around a ball”, “why do you care so much about two needles and some yarn”, “why do you care so much about a tiny plastic train going around a track”. It’s called entertainment, bitch.

Second answer is, my God! If there’s any segment of society that I don’t want uncritically reading stories that reinforce sexist ideas and give abusers carte blanche, it’s teenage goddamn boys. If my little drop in the ocean makes the slightest difference against that, I don’t consider it wasted time.

Q: I do assholish things like tell people to die for shipping the wrong thing but I ship one of your OTPs. We cool right? A: 🎶 don’t stand, don’t stand so, don’t stand so close to me 🎶

Q: I have a squick or trigger, will you tag it for me? A: I will do my best! Send me a message or ask. You don’t have to explain why you don’t like it.

Q: You have a lot of weird tags, do you have a tagging system? A: I do! It’s a bit complex, but in addition to commentary tags (stuff like “too cute” or “i’m crying in the club rn”), I try to tag descriptively for blacklists.

For original content, I usually post character names in several different forms for the benefit of tag search, eg both “Kakashi” and “Kakashi Hatake” and “Hatake Kakashi”. I also tag with the original artist’s name (if it’s a repost or translation), and “creative commons” or “with permission” depending on whether I was following a usage policy or explicitly got permission from the artist.

For reblogs, I only tag character’s first names, generally.

My meta tag is “naruto analysis”. My typesets tag is “my typesets”. My fanfic tag is “my fanfic”.

I try to tag triggers like “alcohol /” and “blood /” with the slash at the end.

If a piece of art could be interpreted as romantic or platonic, I usually tag with both the character names and the ship name. If it is unmistakably romantic, I only tag the ship name.

Q: You post a lot of stuff and I don’t always come back to Tumblr that often, but I’m really interested in [this character/pairing]. Could you message me when you post original content for that character/pairing? A: I can try! I do this for some people already. Obviously if tons of people want me to do this it won’t work, but right now I’m doing it for less than ten and it works ok. Message me!

Q: Is this a sideblog? Do you run any other blogs? A: It’s Naruto on main here, baby. I have a few other sideblogs. @fineilikefmab is a blog for Fullmetal Alchemist content. @domesticaphrodite is for food, beauty, lifestyle etc and is more of a personal blog. @fineilikesmut (which I can’t tag) is my blog for reblogs that are not SFW.

Q: I found some Chinese art that I want translated! Will you do that? A: Send me the link! I will definitely consider it. Any pairing will be considered except post-699 canon-compliant SS. Right now, I only do typesets for artists who give me permission to modify their work. (I have complex feelings about fair use and abandoned works, but as a matter of priorities, when there are artists who have given me permission whose works haven’t been translated fully, it only makes sense to prioritize them.)

You can also request a character or pairing and I’ll go hunting for content on my own. Some pairings that are very popular among English speakers are not popular among Chinese speakers and vice versa, so obviously my ability to find content depends on that content existing.

Q: I’ve noticed you repost work from Chinese artists. Sometimes you say “with permission” and sometimes you mention something about CC-BY or similar. What is this CC thing? A: Creative Commons is a copyleft movement dedicated to make it easier for people to share their work while retaining aspects of control that are important to them. As opposed to copyright, a CC license makes a work freely sharable and may or may not permit changing the work and using the work for profit. The website LOFTER, by default, does not apply any CC license to artists’ work, but they can opt in to using one, and there are a variety to choose from. Therefore, you can be confident that the artist chose to let people share (with credit) or remix their work.

Partly it’s fandoms (usually weebs and yaoi fangirls), too much bad art work/fanfic, or people refusing to realise the flaws in their possible relationship (Sasuke’s issues, Karma making Nagisa cross dress etc) so even if I liked the ship, the fanon version becomes this weird version that I can’t handle. I still read and reblog stuff, but that’s usually because it’s the first 99999999 results you find whenever you type a character’s name :|Honestly tho, from my beyblade days (y’all shush now), Rei and Kai. Never understood it, never will. D - A pairing you wish you liked but just can’t.None? There’s plenty of ships I’m meh about but I don’t really care if I like them or not. I don’t really get MaeIso (again, I’ll read and reblog, but I see them pretty much just as friends) so it’d be nice if I cared more about it since it’s the second (?) most popular ship, but other than that I don’t care much.(Maybe Tai and Sora from Digimon. W - A trope which you are virtually certain to hate in any fandom.DK if its a trope or not, but any time a female is ignored/killed/bashed simply for ‘being in the way’ of a m/m ship. In the same vein, no matter the ship make up (f/f, m/m, f/m, whatever), when the ‘weaker’ one is made to be girly and the ‘strong’ one is manly. Especially when it makes literally no sense for the characters to be changed in that sense. ’Love triangles’ which aren’t actually triangles. (A likes B who likes C who likes A is a triangle. A having to choose between B and C isn’t.) Actually pretty much most romance tropes since they’re often used in combination with bad writing and a extreme version of characters (see next point). Also, when characters are pretty drastically changed and people are like ‘it’s AU so it’s ok!’. Like, yeah some change is necessary since it’s a different universe with different rules, standards etc, but they still need to be similar to the original character otherwise you might as well have made an OC.It’s more a trend than a trope, but writers refusing to research cultures. I started reading fic back in the early 2000′s. There wasn’t the internet resources to research cultures as in depth as you can now (sure, there were some, but they weren’t as vast or easy to find as they are today). Some shows and manga simple weren’t translated, or trying to find subs and other fan translations/summaries was only possible if you sacrificed your first born. Theres no excuse for it today. (There wasn’t then, either) (It seemed to have got better for a while, but I’ve seen this a lot in the Ass Class fandom, and a few things from the Yugioh and Digimon fandoms too recently)Stop white washing everything by going ‘I don’t understand the culture so I’ll make all my fics set in America’. This IS white washing. It’s also lazy as fuck. Sure, your head canon or fic more than likely isn’t hurting anyone from the cultures those characters are from. But you’re also slowly erasing chances people have to learn in more depth about those cultures, or by saying ‘this is set in Japan’ but not involving Japanese culture, you’re erasing that and saying ‘everything is the same as my culture’. You’re also creating expectations within fandoms (’oh, these people are pretty similar to me!’) but then if they end up visiting, their expectations are dashed. (You aren’t responsible for them not doing research, sure, but you are responsible for your own interpretations and ideas) It creates new stereotypes and when people have been exposed to them instead of the ‘real’ version of that country/religion/race/whatever, some can be stubborn and try to go ‘well, no, I’ve seen all this which contradicts you’ and not see reality. I’m not sure this last point is making sense, but basically, do your research. It’ll help you be a better writer and a more educated human. It ain’t that hard folks.
