Neil Gaiman: There Is No Safeword (via Vulture/New York Magazine)
This new article about NG from Vulture/New York Magazine is so much more damning and humanizing, and so much more impartial and well written, than anything I'd seen last year. I hate that it's necessary but I'm glad we have it now.
[ get over the paywall with archive.is or 12ft.io ]
TW for a more damning retelling of many of the allegations we heard about via various podcasts during summer 2024, plus likely abuse of a child (Neil) and alleged sexual activity in the presence of a child (Neil's). (NG's representatives still deny all allegations.)
Also a more fair discussion of what healthy BDSM actually is (including enthusiastic consent, advance negotiation, respect, communication, and the use of safe words or signals).
Take care of yourself and mind how you go if/when you decide to read it.
Or read this shorter but still official press release/summary from NY Magazine - it's much less explicit/triggery:
My biggest initial takeaway from this - as someone who was already familiar with the previous allegations - is how deeply important it is to address trauma in healthy ways that will help you move towards resolving it. When trauma lingers, it affects you in ways you may not expect or be able to control. This is NOT an excuse for anyone's behavior, and NOT a reason anyone should be victimized; it's just a reminder that we all have a duty as adults to do the work to move towards the best versions of ourselves, and unresolved trauma is lurking, waiting to hurt you or the people who love you. Find a therapist you click with or another healthy outlet and start working through it. Talk to loved ones. Journal. Exercise. Read. Whatever nourishes you and helps you move through the trauma. Please. If not for yourself, then for the people who love you ❤️
And please, everyone, be radically fucking kind to everyone as they process this in their own ways.
Edit: NG posted a response on his website the day after the Vulture article was released:

This is a really good comment.
I can't get over how respectful, sensitive, thoughtful, well-researched, and well-presented this article was.
Deeply grateful for Lila Shapiro's excellent journalism, and in awe of the courage, bravery, strength, and conviction of the survivors.

Happy 50th Birthday, SNL!
It wasn't until I went down the Bill Hader rabbit hole in 2019 that I realized how much Saturday Night Live shaped the comedy I grew up with, comedy today, and pop culture in general. It's been on for 50 years but the first time I remember hearing about it was in university, through the Lonely Island song "Jizz In My Pants".
I didn't know Wayne's World, Coneheads, and Superstar were movie spin-offs to popular sketches on the show; that it catapulted Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, and Bill Murray to fame; that it's provided us Late Night hosts, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Fallon, and Seth Meyers; or that I have it to thank for Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig who would go on to create and star in some of my favorite female comedies: Mean Girls, 30 Rock, and Bridesmaids.
I don't know how well those 90s spin-offs have aged (probably not well—even Superstar I couldn't get behind with then), but I feel the need to give tribute to the institution that has paved the way for some of the most original and fascinating comedies in recent years: Bill's Barry; Will Forte's MacGruber and The Last Man on Earth; Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph's Forever; John Mulaney's stand-up specials; Bill, Fred, and Seth's Documentary Now!; Jason Sudeikis' Ted Lasso, and The Lonely Island's Michael Bolton's Big, Sexy Valentine's Day Special — along with all the cool shit they're producing like Palm Springs and I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson.
📸 David LaChapelle for New York Magazine (2024)
p.s. so excited for the 50th anniversary show in February!

Ok.
I feel the need to say something in response to some of the comments I’ve seen popping up on various platforms since the Vulture article and Gaiman journal post came out.
Child abuse does not lead to the victim becoming an abuser.
It is not an excuse or an explanation for future behaviour.
A shitty childhood does not allow you to treat others like shit when you’re an adult.
Abusing someone is a choice. It is not an inevitable, unavoidable outcome of your childhood. Abusing multiple people over years is…fuck, I can’t even find the words beyond saying it’s sickening.
Never forget that Gaiman is a master wordsmith. Language is what he knows. Words are his tools.
Don’t be fooled.
Disclaimer: I was a victim of CSA.
