When Jim was five, his father was killed. Most everyone believes it was a driveby shooting, but Jim knows the truth. His father was a Changeling who betrayed the Gumm-gumms, a Halfling. The murder was perpetrated by Bular, when Jim's father sacrificed his life to protect Troll Market beneath Arcadia Oaks.

The Trollhunter at the time, Kanjigar, swore an oath to repay Jameson's sacrifice by defending Jim and his mother. The boy spent much of his free time after that in Troll Market, learning to fight and studying the history of the war.

On his fifteenth birthday, in the presence of the Heartstone, his half-troll blood revealed the Changeling's ability to change forms. Able to change at will between Human and Half-troll states.

As he was raised in part by trolls, Jim was ready to accept the burden of the Amulet when it fell to him after Kanjigar's death.
