Closed starter for @ubiquitarian Verse: Varia!Au
Haru stared at the young teen in front of her skeptically. Narrowing her eyes, she looked him up and down before she realized what she was looking at. “I’m not the shortest anymore.” Mammon, never counted as an outlier, so she’s always been the shortest of the bunch. She had her priorities straight.
"Anyways, so they said your name is Fran? You’re replacing Mammon?” She looks at the young teen again. So another young genius in the mix, hm? “Well, it’s nice to meet you. The name’s Haru. I work alongside the intelligence officers on reconnaissance missions.” In essence, she makes sure that they stay alive and if things start getting dicey, that’s when you get rid of everyone on your tail.
Obviously, that wasn’t very ideal, but sometimes you had to make a flashy or explosive exist.

dyingresolve:
He looks slightly dumbfounded when Haru mentions that Belphegor is indeed an actual prince ( he still doesn’t quite believe it, why’d anyone give up such a life of doing nothing and join the Varia? ), but recovers from the momentary revelation quickly. “Eh, shouldn’t there be a rule or something that you’re not supposed to skewer a fellow Varia officer?” Even within the mafia, there should be some sort of rule enforcement, right? Though he supposes it’s not uncommon, if his past experiences are worth anything.
“Actually she was pretty annoying and nagging all the time.”, the younger retorts at the statement, but the truth is, that he does appreciate his grandmother – she was the one who took care of him and raised him after all, even if she was already old and couldn’t really understand what he liked and disliked, or what he wanted to do… “But… I suppose I’m lucky.” His parents were never around and as such, Fran didn’t feel any connection to them at all and thus, his grandmother is the closest to family he’d consider.
Another sigh escapes him, why did they even start talking about their height in the first place? He doesn’t even mind as much, but somehow got more worked up as the conversation went. “Ah, I did actually forget those existed. They look like a real pain to walk on after all. Won’t you just trip and die or something?” Dying is a bit extreme, but if you’re unlucky and unfortunate, who knew where a trip could end up in? You could trip and fall down a cliff, for example. Not that that has happened to him before of course.
Haru could understand how Fran felt. She too sometimes questions whether or not Belphegor really is royalty or not given how he acts most of the time. Where was the calm and suave Prince you often see in novels or in movies? Yeah, no. What the Varia had was a murder gremlin. Well, they loved him either way. He may be a murder gremlin, but he was the best they got and that had to count for something. “Given how we choose our leader, I don’t think such a rule exists. It’s mostly every officer for themselves here. Of course, indiscriminate killing of fellow officers isn’t allowed, but…” wasn’t there a thing where Belphegor didn’t have a squad under his command because he killed a few out of boredom? “It’s a good thing you’re a mist kid.” She could only shake her head at the thought.
It was good that he understood that he was lucky to have someone who cared for him, though her nagging could be annoying. Haru herself didn’t have any of that, so she envied those who had family- or at least the memories of having one. To be fair, it was a few years back when she learned about her history, but she didn’t do anything with the information. What was the point after coming this far? Randomly show up like, ‘hello, even though you’ve thought your child and grandchild died many years ago, I’ve actually been alive, and some random kid was taken in as me?’ That wasn’t the conversation she was comfortable with having. “Well, we’re all sorts of messed up here, but you could say some of us are like family. It’s like having annoying brothers and uncles.”
“You could if the heels are tall enough. Many women have tripped while wearing platform heels and it caused their ankles to snap. If you fall just right, you’ll die.” She nods her head sagely. She wouldn’t ever find herself in such a situation since it wasn’t like she needed to be the tallest person in the Varia or anything. If she did, the platform heels would have to be ridiculous considering Leviathan was over 190cm? A tall monstrosity of a man. “You’ll be fine if the heels aren’t too tall and you’re careful about it. They also double as a nice weapon, sometimes.” Ever gotten a stiletto heel lodged into your cranium? It’s a doozy, let her tell you.
