the wider scope of worlddoms motivations are always worth thinking about, because ozs solo reasoning does not betray the whole story surrounding.

we have the twins, who grew up alone and together, only having each other, to the point that their priorities ARE each other, themselves as a unit over themselves as individuals. at a certain point, age, stage - and surely a very old one - they became hosts and guardians of a village of humans, but they stay disconnected emotionally from those humans by their priorities being each other- and that they are so old that any human business is well and truly beyond putting much emotional stock in. they care about the humans under their wing as we care about butterflies- lovable, pitiful raindrops,. eternal children to watch over.

figaro grew up directly among and within the fold of humanity. the given reason for her life was as a god to the humans she served and who served her, which means her relationship to humanity is of an outsider enclosed within while still being beyond the border - her duty is to take care of humans and others, and while her age does make her see the folly of age and eternal youth like the twins might, and she claims and sometimes even behaves like she experiences it similarly, her emotional attachment to them is not the same. while she may claim that humans are dewdrops that fade with the warmth of the sun, she also holds her babies tight while going Oh they're just babies. theyre not just babies. 🫵 I saw you. and running when you think theyre being taken from you doesnt make it any better I SAW YOU

ozs relationship with the twins is that of a disciple with masters who care about them but also are terrible, who look out for them but also push them to their furthest limits and seem to have an innate distance and sort of cruelty to them- and they might! but they do care. oz knows how the twins interface with the world, humans, younger wizards, and especially each other. and then figaros problems manifest significantly less visibly - how are you supposed to worry about your shijie when shes busy critiquing YOUR problems. figaro helps oz learn and looks after them fondly, scolds and guides, and she acts like its because its her job to do but its not. it is really, really not. so oz understands how figaro reacts to the world as a whole, and often themself - distance full of love.

so oz takes this experience with these situations, takes the bonds they form unwillingly by being as strong as they are, the expectations placed upon them by humans and weaker wizards and anyone outside kitashitei, and goes no, i dont want this. if i took over the world, if i forcefully pushed everything away, i could clip those bonds, expectations, burdens, in the bud, and i would be left alone at the top. but its pretty obvious that thats not how it works! having more power than others is what brought people to oz to begin with. and butting into everyones situation, even (especially) with violence causes everything you touch to be tied to you irreversibly, even after your direct influence is taken from the situation. they knew the twins allowed themselves to be relied on despite caring only about each other (and their stupid idiot disciples, kind of), and they surely know, on some level, about the burden of responsibility placed on figaro (and how it may have influenced their own relationship), and i think that makes their idea of forcibly shutting out the world even more interesting. those are burdens you cannot run from, and by doing so, you tripped on them and made them pull even tighter around you. and thats not even mentioning the fact they were not even truly alone while trying to become alone. figaro was ALSO THERE.

kitashitei is one of my favorite examples of the common mahoyaku theme that how you grew up influences how you are now, which is also tied into the idea of the spirits influencing anyone who lives in what country. its obvious in abstract- yes, people who live in a certain place may act similarly and have similar values to people who live in the same place. people who experienced x may do y. not a shocking concept. but this is also the theming of the fated pairs, and how they force each other to reckon with not only their past but their futures, both shared and individually. we must face both of these things to move forward properly.

i could give a mental illness answer but that's predictable....i have a stuffed pink and white dog that i've had since i was a child - took it to college with me and now it lives in my apartment <3 it's my only unnamed stuffed animal!

oh boy. i'm a big "laying awake at night and replaying all my worst/greatest hits" so i don't really have a single one to reference 😅 i work in customer service so usually if there's an argument that riles me up that's what i'm thinking about - all the ways they were wrong and the many different ways i could've told them that if i didn't care about getting fired LOL
