Nadia: Do you have any other plants besides the basil that you want to grow? (I adore your art, you draw Sanji so nicely ^v^ 💞)
Oh dear lady, I’m flattered by your attention!! I do in fact have other plants, namely mint–

July 22nd-July 28th, 2020 Reader Favorites Archive
The archive for the Reader Favorites chat that occurred from July 22nd, 2020 to July 28th, 2020.  The chat focused on the following question:
How have your reading tastes for webcomics changed over the years?
carcarchu
i think i used to read exclusively romance webcomics but now i'm really into the historical stuff. also i'm not so into the strictly straightforward stuff anymore, i need a really strong hook or something that makes it different enough to be enjoyable because i'm really tired of reading something that is indistinguishable from other similar webcomics. also i think i've gotten pickier when it comes to the quality of art and writing. there's just so much stuff to pick from now that i want to dedicate my time only to stuff that i really enjoy. i just don't have enough time to read every single webcomic i come across anymore
Tuyetnhi (Only In Your Dreams!)
in the past I used to read a bunch of comedic absurdist humor comics (I still do) but it's been buffed out by romance . Same vein like Cara said, I'm just picking and choosing which comics I spend my time on but I do want to try to read as much as I can tho!
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I feel like I used to read LEGO comics a lot lol... I'm not sure how many of them still hold up. In terms of genre, the only comics I struggle to read are ones that are more realistic, or darker. Historical comics often fall into this, as do most horror comics.(edited)
RebelVampire
For me, my tastes haven't necessarily changed in terms of the what I like. What has changed is what I dislike. As the years have gone by, I've really been more open to at least giving comics a try before deciding they aren't for me, especially in the genres I consistently don't like like comedy. So I've gradually disliked less comics. Not to say I like them either or they're for me, but it's a step up from dislike since now I can appreciate what the comics are trying to do more. I think the bigger change for me was art styles though. While I still do have a specific sort of art preference, I've also been more open to giving certain art styles I don't normally like more of a try as well and I've found the styles I dislike (personally, not objectively in terms of talent) to be a much smaller pool than it was before.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Oh man, I'm the opposite. I feel like I've gotten pickier
varethane
I can't tell if I've gotten pickier or if the bar has just gotten high enough now that if I only have the bandwidth to read X number of webcomics (let's say 20 as a random example), and I'll be picking from among those which stand out to me, those 20 comics will be on a totally different level than the 20 I might have found 10 years ago
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I think I've also gotten pickier
The biggest change, I think, is that I've gotten way pickier about storytelling
While I used to be able to read a comic with subpar storytelling. I drop comics in an instant these days if the story doesn't speak to me pretty quickly(edited)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
I think it's because when I started reading comics, everything was new and novel. Now there're more tropes I recognize? And more problematic things that bother me, when before I would not have noticed
Deo101 [Millennium]
I dont think I've gotten pickier, per se, I think I just have very specific tastes and many things dont fit them which feels picky? but i can enjoy all kinds of genres, I kind of go into something 1: not wanting to think 2: not wanting to be offended and 3: wanting to laugh a bit? which isnt exactly a high bar to pass, but not many things will do that for me, which isnt because I'm a picky person, its jsut cause a lot of things arent made for peope like me?
varethane
I'm not consciously looking for 'only the best quality' by any means-- if there's anything I'm really looking for, it's a sense of passion and uniqueness, that feeling that the author is having a blast with the thing they're doing. But I feel like it's gotten harder to draw my attention (and readers' attention in general) without having a certain level of skill involved
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Oh, same. As my art gets better so does my eye for it
varethane
....and, yeah, I guess I've also gotten tired of certain tropes. Once I read 2 or 3 webcomics that do kinda the same thing, I'm less likely to pick up a fourth with the same general premise, even if it looks like it's well-made.
(sorry isekai....)
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I just absorb a lot of storytelling in many forms, so if the story doesn't grab me right away, I feel like I'm wasting time reading something, where I could be fulfilling my desire for more worthwhile storytelling elsewhere
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Oh true, there are so so many comics out there now
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Art quality plays into it a bit for me, but it's honestly primarily the storytelling
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Everything I read I could be reading 100 others of similar quality Really, why does anyone read my comic at all?
varethane
"good art will get readers to take a first look, good writing is what makes them stay"
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Art quality is very important to me but I've still read and loved a few stories will amateurish art
varethane
for me personally, the art's just gotta be good enough for me to not be distracted by it while I read
Deo101 [Millennium]
idk I think a lot of people stay through bad writing even if something looks good
also yeah i feel the same, about not wanting to be distracted
"does the art serve the story?" is all I really care about
varethane
art serving the story is the most important part. Art can LOOK amazing, but if the body language or expressions don't fit the story being told, it can make the writing seem worse lol
a friend of mine once referred to it as, like watching a well-written screenplay but with terrible miscast actors
Deo101 [Millennium]
mhm, cause the only words we get are dialogue, the art has to be all the descriptive language. so if theyre not describing well, a lot is missing.
varethane
yeah
Deo101 [Millennium]
or I guess some comics have narration, too
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Narration can't do ALL of the work
varethane
yeah haha
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah, one of my professors said that a rule of thumb of his about comics is "if you can read me the words and I know whats going on, it's not good comics."
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
The art definitely serves the story (or is supposed to), but if the story is bad from the beginning, I don't care how good the art is.
varethane
I have complicated feelings on that one, because I feel like it's actually pretty rare for me to consider a 'story' bad (at least insofar as we're talking about the core ideas of the plot). Most premises (if they're not actively offensive/poorly thought through), if written out as just a skeletal outline, could work just fine. IMO bad writing is a problem of execution, most of the time, rather than concept. (hedging my language here because there's always exceptions lol)
Deo101 [Millennium]
I would say I agree with you. I think writing and story are different concepts. There is also sort of a macro/micro element to writing, as well, and either one can be messed up
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, I misspoke, what I mean by "bad story" is more "bad storytelling/writing"
but yes
carcarchu
a friend of mine once referred to it as, like watching a well-written screenplay but with terrible miscast actors
@varethane oh i have read stuff like this. like the art was INCREDIBLE really detailed renders, very consistent and technically fantastic art but so often it just devolved into shot / reverse shot talking heads and the characters didn't really emote beyond changing the position of their eyebrows so it kinda felt like watching dolls interact with each other
RebelVampire
I mulled over the fact I took the opposite route as everyone else. XD For me I think it's three factors. First, I was actually ungodly picky in my youth across the board with everything, not just comics. As such, I've missed out on a lot of things other people love. Second, with each passing year, I've come to appreciate more the work people put into their indie projects. And for me its like a show of respect in a way to acknowledge that hey, you worked on this thing I may not like, but I'll try it because you clearly love what you created (or I hope you love it). Third, and probably the bigger factor, I stuck myself in a positive feedback loop. The more I opened myself up to things and learned to not initially dislike things or be as harsh, the more I ended up finding a gem I really loved. In fact, while this is across diff industries, I'd say this has been the biggest influence for me with webcomics because so many webcomics I was like "Well I'll try it gotta be open and not just dislike it," and then I came away going "Wow this is a diamond in the rough!"

honestly my dream sonic cartoons are:
1. reboots of aosth/satam/underground/x/boom  2. post reboot archie/idw sonic animated adaptations 3. slice of life shorts compilation based on sonic channel art 4. a mix between adaptations of game stories and original in between plots
1 - i have my personal reasons for each of these
aosth - im just curious to see wacky slapstick shenanigans with the current cast tbh sjdhgfgh. also updated art style would be nice, tho i presume they would use the “calarts” style
satam - s3 would make more sense, buut i like a fresh start better. keep the darker tone compared to satam but update the character designs, make the nature vs technology conflict more neutral, change antoine’s personality to be on the lines of his post-reboot archie version, and not make sonic look stupid compared to sally
on the character designs part, perhaps to make it more distinguished from other sonic media, they could change sonic/tails/every game character’s design to match how the freedom fighters look. its both consistent and a throwback!
obviously more characters added. i think they start off like the original series (with a bonus mighty and ray cuz why not), then introduce amy, knuckles, and metal sonic in the second season. more get introduced throughout the rest of the series, obviously
i honestly kinda see this one happening at some point bc of the rebooting old cartoons trend. sega is also catering to nostalgic fans, and while its mainly game centered, perhaaapss they might end up focusing a little on the group of people who REALLY want this one cartoon back
(or not bc of penders bullshit who knows)
underground - ik this one has a mixed to negative reception with fans, but i think it had potential and a reboot could REALLY help out it’s reputation if done well. i think having a more stable plotline and characters that actually look like sonic characters (yeah i know satam characters look like generic furries, but underground....has an entirely different way of design) might grab better interest
also give sonia a better voice pls
sonic x - this is the one i REALLY wish would happen. sonic x is a very important show to me as it helped me get into the franchise, and im not sure where id be without it tbh
but i KNOW its full of flaws and honestly? id love to see a version with them fixed
mainly that of being: chris as a whole getting a few retweaks and less of the screentime, better amy characterization, sonic character development, explaining the whole ordeal behind shadow being a mobian despite being created on earth, how eggman got into sonic’s world, chris’ friends getting an extended role (isnt rlly much of a problem i just wanted to add that lol) and most importantly
DO SOMETHING WITH THE FACT THAT HELEN LOOKS LIKE MARIA AAAAAAAAAA
also! cosmo lives
boom - rlly i just want a sonic boom cartoon that goes with what rise of lyric initially was trying to do
2 - i think both animated would be pretty neat!!!! post reboot for some reason gives me saturday morning cartoon feels, and since it was cut short, seeing the continuity come back in animation form would be SO GOOD
idw is mainly bc i want voices for the exclusive characters and the zombot crisis arc animated
3 - i love the sonic channel art and its funny seeing action characters doing mundane things
4 - this one’s a personal project of mine that i’ll unveil eventualllyy~! the basics is that it starts off as an origin story for sonic, then to many other characters as theyre introduced. game stories are rewritten a little to fit a cartoon arc/fix any major flaws, and the in between plots are arcs that show what happened in between games obviously

get madder :^)
hey yall remember that post where i gave a 1-or-2 sentence comment about each fanart that got featured in the community update? many people promptly took their panties and corkscrewed them directly up their very touchy buttholes, so i thought it'd be fun to do a follow-up :^)
>everyone who just said "lol bad post u suck ur opinion SUX"
it's my opinion lol deal w it
>it’s kinda cute how you think we would care about this / nobody cares
clearly u do bc ur mad fam!!! hahaha rekd got u!!1!
>perhaps… perhaps art is subjective and they wanted to make some community members happy by featuring them?
they couldve picked a little better was my only point
>"It’s people like this who give new artists anxiety for posting stuff online" / everything about how mean i am bc it will make newb artists feel nerbous :'(
hey guess what! it's the internet where literally everyone can see and say whatever they want. that's the risk ya fuckin take when u post online :^) waahhh
>"It’s called a personal art style"
its common knowledge by now but "its muh style" is not an excuse and yeah its subjective but also sometimes aspects of a pic are just bad
>"how does desnik only get a 5/10 lmao. Amazing shading, a super unique and difficult perspective that brings life to the whole piece? Ye nah that’s shit, apparently."
i said the shading (painting) was pretty good, and they lose points bc "bringing it to life" with a weird pose only works if the anatomy and perspective (which i specified) isnt so off that it takes away from the entire piece pretty significantly, which imo it does. also that pose isnt unique i can find u 10 pics of furries in that exact pose on like the front page of furaffinity or wherever. also i didnt say it was shit LOL
>"“this is anime uwu garbage” is not criticism OP"
fuck yeah it is, you ever been to the front page of deviantart? i assumed the implied "stop using super stylized shitty anime pics as a reference bc ur overall "style" is severely and obviously suffering for it" was kinda evident but i guess not
>"why the fuck do people get so butthurt when someone says their art is bad"
dude THANK you i mean i was expecting pretty severe backlash but i was as least expecting more creativity than literally just "bad post op" 20 times. tho i DID see enough to make this post i guess? this blog is fun but like in a painful way
> “not to be rude to the featured artists, good on them” pick a tone and stick with it
sorry man i really just do have a rude-sounding speaking (,,typing) voice and i dont mean any bad feelings towards these artists, my literal only point is that that one pic has some problems and maybe staff had some better pics to spotlight instead (and i don't even mean that for all of them. top, middle, and bottom left were all good choices and so was desnik's tbh. but i figured id ""review"" them too cuz they were there) i usually even pointed out something i liked about it? but i gotta move fast here cmon 100 character limit
>"dude… do you even know what a sketch is? because that’s in no way a sketch"
what do YOU define as a sketch? i guess the snapper one could also be lineart but its in 2 midtones (which people do when theyre "sketching" out values) and they used a messy brush so my mind went to sketch. and the coatl one looks like they did it really fast and slapped some flat colors on it. actually my point was literally that it looks like they did it fast, like a sketch rather than a lineart
>"at least put in some effort in writing a couple of sentences on each drawing on what, why, and how to improve the drawings. Seeing that some of the art is clearly from amateur artists, some words of advice would at least be helpful here."
yeah u right they definitely deserve better. but i was going fast cuz i just have an affinity for short snappy reviews i guess. like i tried to do cliffnotes, just "this part is good but this part is bad" and then a meaningless number score cuz i aint even addressing this to them, i posted it to a drama blog to complain about staff basically
>the nocturne guy who wrote a lot
alright cool. you totally have gotten a lot better. i never meant to discourage you for drawing in the first place. incidentally i said u had potential bc u were obviously a new artist, but like u were OBVIOUSLY a new artist with a loose understanding of depth and shading and stuff, and again this is a front page spotlight yadda yadda. ill fuckin hit u with a review right now:
you clearly understand shading and anatomy way better, and that coatl actually looks pretty fuckin good. the lineart is more consistent, it's framed way better, the proportions are WAY better, and it's really clean and stylized. the shading is infinitely more convincingly shiny and reflective. from here, imo you could benefit from going further with shading (darker, more dynamic, leaving little to no flat spaces like the crest fluff and tongue), and maybe polishing the lineart a little more too, like coloring/highlighting it and really pushing/polishing the linewidth (there are tutorials for that). overall that coatl is v cute, keep on pushing poses & shading
>"i bet OPs art sucks ass"
fIT e ME IrL
anyway thanks 4 reading my fucking essay and i'm super high. if you read al lof this then shame on you

1st I wanted to say sorry you’re going through it. I deleted years ago but still visit some from time to time in the mobile browser. For whatever reason I gravitate back to tumblr because I had a decent time here despite the insanity earlier in the decade. 1. What era did you join tumblr? I joined during the ASAP Yamz/NY Swag era 😅 2. Favorite artist you discovered from tumblr. 3. Thoughts on the New Year. -28th anon
damn I guess its that obvious im hurt lmaooo ive been coming on tumblr to dump my feelings which probably isnt the best thing for me or anyone else tbh but thank you 💙
honestly it was the early meme era is all i can remember. i literally downloaded tumblr because my friend kept showing me hilarious suprised patrick memes in class lol it was probably 2012-2013 era. I somehow never left, even with all the chaos throughout the years its somehow the only consistent form of social media. Nothing shiny or new in the app, theres also less pressure here, just people postin whatever they want. i hope it doesnt change tbh
hmmm so visual artist i found thomas blacksheers work on here, he does these amazing paintings that feel so warm and intense. takashi murakami opened my eyes to a lottt of new styles of art too. And of course artists here on tumblr, theres soo many of them that have either deactivated or moved to instagram or twitter, im glad i kept up with them though its so cool watching them grow in the last decade
but if you meant audio artists i didnt really discover new artists from tumblr, i found more of a community who listened to similar music as i did. Nujabes, Jdilla, Mf Doom, Flying Lotus, etc, and then a lot of 80s and 90s artists. I loved seeing anime videos chopped up on a nujabes beat, some of them are still circulating around too. it was cool feeling like there was a community and i wasnt alone. cause irl no one liked my music lmao
my thoughts on the new year is tough. I feel like many people are trying to make it their year, and then theres also many people who arnt even batting an eye and trying cause the past two years have been shit for most ppl. For myself, im really trying to make it my year. I need it to be or im gonna die trying. 2021 was probably the worst year of my life, and it became very obvious to me that my traumas have me in a chokehold and are preventing me from receiving love and just growing as a person. Its off to a good start tho, ive got 3 phone interviews lined up so im hoping i can finally land a stable job to leave my situation. Im trying not to let myself down but im feeling too ambitious; i have so much planned for this year and if all goes well I could be so well off i would never have to worry about finances.
I feel like a lot of people are going through intense change right now, it could just be the people im directly around but the whole world feels like theres some type of anticipation; its probably a result of covid but i just hope that this year wont hurt too many people
also, if you were a mutual ive messaged before dont be a afraid to hmu! so many of my mutuals have deactivated and i think about them occasionally and hope theyre doing ok ❤️

ok so new goal list!
.) clean my room like just completely deep clean it inside and out particularly my closet which has been a tangled mess for far too long! and just organize things and make sure not to let a mess pile up
.) the ongoing never ending goal of trying to consistently wake up early... now that i dont have classes i really have to watch and manage this one cause i dont wanna slip even deeper into being a lazyhead -_-
.) not waste too much money from now on but also when i do make sure to like not lean too much into one particular area! like lately ive been buying games n stuff but i gotta balance it primarily between games and music but also pedals and dvds. i guess those are the four things i desire the most lol. -_- dvds and pedal less and dvds the least i think but ive been eyeing a lot of dvds lately like those nice jackie chan ones that have the cover art be faithful to the original while having english subtitles and the english name right next to the original. they also have some dvds like that of akira kurosawas movies i found sanjuro and yojimbo online like that too which is cool :) and w/ pedals i mainly wanna get the tremolo and phaser pedal cause theyd be great for me to mess around w/ :) but rn i think my next thing i wanna get is outrun on pc engine cause im worried the price’ll keep rising and ive never had outrun on a console that isnt handheld i rly only played it on 3ds lol which is like a perfect port but itd be nice to play smthn like outrun especially with the nice speakers hearing the music liek that.
.) go driving more! i need to get my permit but rly all i care abt is just being comfortable driving and like not relying on having someone giving me constant directions all the time.
.) practice music more and like for real! like i need to practice and not just mess around. like i need to write sstuff more consistently or atleast write stuff of higher quality and like get more skilled and comfortable w/ improvising. i think i have most fun on the bass even tho i play piano the most. and i rly need to spend more time on the crumar organ cause i love the sound of it but am not at all like comfortable improvising or messing around w/ it i have difficulty finding the write sounds on it and get all tangled up in the drawbars and what the nicest sound is to play chords n stuff. but i also wanna get a phaser and tremolo cause i think those could sound real nice on it i think. i also think tremolo would be great for the bass and am interested on what phaser would sound like w/ my playing style on it. also wanna get a wah wah cause thatd sound great on it if i practice but i think ill put that off again cause the other two pedals would be better since i can use them on multiple instruments for sure. ah also itd be great to dust off my old casio and use phaser and tremolo on it cause i already loved playing the casio cause i could get such dreamy sounds on it already and imagine w/ those two @_@ wow!
