Chapter 27

Harper stood abruptly from the bench, as did Jensen. They stared at the man walking towards them. Jensen could see the panic on Harper's face.

"I thought it was you," Dennis spoke as he walked towards them, "Though I'm surprised to see you in New York. I could've sworn I heard an old friend of your mothers say you moved to Texas."

Jensen quickly moved Harper behind him to protect her, "Don't you dare come any closer, you piece of shit. I know what you did to her."

"And I know what you did to her, Ackles. You left her. Last time I checked you didn't even care to give her a call anymore," Dennis continued to walk towards them, "But this isn't between me and you. I have some...unfinished business with the brat."

Harper peeked out from behind Jensen, stuttering her words, "Wait, I-I thought y-you were in jail?"

Dennis let out a deep, dark chuckle, "I was. But I got out early on good behavior. Been out for about a week and a half now."

Harper flinched at his words as he spoke, all the memories of him, her mother, and her. All the pain she felt. All the sleepless nights. The tears, the sadness, the fear of what was to come next.

She shuddered behind Jensen, but tried her hardest not to show fear. Jensen saw that she was trying to hide and knew if he didn't try to do something, Dennis might try to hurt her again.

Jensen and Harper exchanged a worried look as Dennis continued to talk.

"I was planning on visiting you and your mother when I got out, but I recently heard that she passed away. Car accident right?" Dennis asked.

"Sh-she was hit by a drunk driver, barely survived the ride to the ambulance. She's been gone for a little over a w-week," Harper replied.

Dennis gave her a fake pout as he rolled his eyes, "What a shame. I would've loved to see her again."

That sentence set Harper over the edge. All her fear and sadness ran out the door. Now she was furious. She knows his intentions, she's known for years now.

Harper stepped out from behind Jensen and got right in Dennis's face, "Even if she was alive, your drunk ass shouldn't be anywhere near her. She hated you-"

"She loved me, you brat!" Dennis screamed back at her.

"She was afraid of you, dickhead! Everyday she was afraid to come home, knowing what was going to happen. She knew that the minute she stepped into the house, she was going to get hurt. She knew when I stepped into the house I was going to get hurt. All she wanted to do was protect me. And when you went to jail and she filed the restraining order, we were finally rid of your lazy ass," Harper stated.

Dennis slapped a hand across her face, making Harper fall to the ground, "Don't you ever talk back to me, you bitch!"

"Hey!"

Dennis looked up at Jensen, "Oh and what's this? Did your Daddy come to fight your battles for you, Harper? Guess I'll have to show him all the fun that we used to have."

Harper watched as Dennis swung at Jensen, but Jensen dodged the punch. Dennis continued to throw punches and kicks at Jensen, but Dennis couldn't lay a finger on him. Jensen dodged every shot.

"Come on, Ackles. Be a man! Fight me!" Dennis yelled out.

"This is what you think being a man is, Dennis? Well I hate to break it to you, but you are dead wrong. I'm not going to hit you and I'm not going to hurt you," Jensen spoke softly.

"But I will," Harper yelled as she kicked Dennis in the side of the head. Dennis stumbled back, his hand on his head as he felt blood dripping.

"Why you little brat!" Dennis swung at Harper, but missed. Harper swung at him, and connected with his cheek. She then swiped his legs out from underneath him. Dennis fell down with a thud.

"There's something you don't know about me, Dennis," Harper said as she punched him in the eye, "After you went to jail," another punch to the lip, "Mom set me up with some kick boxing classes," one punch square in the nose, "And I was top of my class."

Harper pinned his arms down as she continued to punch Dennis in the face. Jensen stood back and watched, afraid if he stepped in she'd punch him by mistake.

Harper stood up after a minute and brushed herself off, her knuckles red from punching Dennis. Dennis's face was covered in bruises and blood. Harper showed him what he did to her for years, and she was proud to not be afraid anymore.

Just then, Dennis swiped her legs out from under her and she fell to the ground. Dennis jump on top of her and reared his fist back and punched her in the eye. He reared back his other arm, ready to strike again.

Unfortunately for him, Jensen was not going to have him doing this to Harper again.

Jensen grabbed his arm and pulled Dennis off of Harper. Harper sat up and saw Jensen and Dennis fighting and wrestling on the ground.

First Jensen had Dennis pinned, holding his arms down to prevent any punches. Dennis then had the upper hand, holding Jensen down as he punched him.

But Jensen wasn't going to let Dennis win. Jensen gathered all the strength he had and pushed Dennis off of him. Jensen kicked him in the throat and watched Dennis fall to the ground, coughing up blood.

Both men had cuts on their faces, blood on their knuckles, and were definitely bruised. Jensen continued to have the upper hand though, pinning Dennis's arms behind his back.

"Let me go, you big shithead!" Dennis yelled at Jensen.

"Why? So you can hit my daughter again? I don't think so, asshole! You're dealing with me now!" Jensen yelled back at him.

Harper took the opportunity when Dennis was pinned and not focused on her to call 911. Jensen continued to pin Dennis to the ground. He wasn't going to let him go.

Harper walked up to Dennis and crouched down to his face, "I hope you enjoyed prison. 'Cause that's exactly where you're going back to."

Dennis wiggled his arms, trying to get them free, "You dumb ass little bitch, you have no idea who you are dealing with."

Harper looked up at Jensen and smiled, "Yeah, I think I do. I'm dealing with a man who bullied my mom and I for years. And I just happen to finally be able to stand up to him. It just so happens that Jensen here," she pointed at Jensen, "doesn't exactly like bullies. Or anyone messing with his family. He's very protective of me. You just happen to cross a line that you weren't ready to cross."

Dennis continued to wiggle and try to get his arms free of Jensen's grip. But Jensen wasn't easing up. He had Dennis down, and Jensen wasn't moving.

It wasn't long after that the cops showed up at the park and arrested Dennis once again. Jensen and Harper were escorted to an ambulance to get looked over.

After Harper was taken care of, one of the officers walked up to her and Jensen, "Mr. Ackles, is there anything you can tell us about what was going on? A statement perhaps?"

Jensen, who was currently being looked at by an EMT, shrugged at the cop, "My daughter and I were just sitting here having a conversation when that man walked up, recognized her from when he was dating her mother, and just started hitting her. I stepped in to make sure he didn't hurt her."

The officer looked at Harper, "Is that true, miss?"

Harper nodded, unable to speak.

The officer wrote something down, "Well, I'm glad you caught him. You see, Dennis escaped from prison about two weeks ago."

Jensen and Harper sat there wide eyed at the officer, shocked at his statement.

"He what?" Harper asked.

"Yes, he escaped and we've been looking for him since then. A few of our sources say he somehow got out of state, but I see now he was hiding in plain sight," the officer replied.

Jensen sighed, "But you're taking him back right?"

The officer nodded, "He'll be going to prison for the rest of his life. There's no chance of him getting out again. I can assure you that."

Harper and Jensen nodded a thanks to the officer as he walked away. Harper sat down next to Jensen in the back of the ambulance, laying a hand on his bandaged arm.

"I'm really sorry for all of this, Dad. I had no idea about Dennis. I thought he was gone for good. But I put you in danger. He could've killed you," Harper rambled on.

Jensen sighed, "Babygirl, you had no idea about any of this. It surprised both of us. Just be lucky it's a few bumps and bruises."

Harper sat up and hugged her dad, who grunted from the pain.

She pulled back, "Sorry! I'm sorry."

Jensen chuckled, "It's fine. I can take a little pain for a hug."

Harper and Jensen exchanged a hug. They stayed like that for a moment until the EMT came back and told Jensen just to take it easy for a few days. Jensen thanked him, and the EMTs left along with the cops.

Jensen thought for a moment before looking at Harper, "So you took kickboxing?"

Harper chuckled and nodded, "Mom thought I needed to learn to defend myself. What she didn't think was when I'm motivated enough, I can defend myself just fine."

Jensen laughed, "Just remind me to never get on your bad side. I don't want to end up like that."

Jensen and Harper walked back over to the bench and sat down. Harper picked up the notebook she was writing in earlier.

Jensen was curious, "I saw you writing something when I got here. If you don't my asking, what was it?"

Harper sighed and leaned back on the bench, closing her eyes, "I, um, I didn't speak at Mom's funeral. I really should've but I couldn't make myself do it. So I came here to try and find some inspiration to write a eulogy for her. I finally wrote everything I needed to say, I just feel bad that I didn't say anything that day."

Jensen smiled, "Well, if you want, we can go visit her grave. Maybe you can say it to her now."

Harper looked down at her notebook then back to Jensen, "I don't know. I think it's too late."

Jensen shook his head, "It's never too late. Harper, let's do it. I'd like to say a few things as well, if you'd let me."

She looked back at her notebook before standing up and grabbing her backpack, "You're right. Let's go."

She and Jensen jogged over to the street to hail a cab. Jensen held out his arm, yelling for a taxi. One stopped almost immediately, and they jumped in. Harper told the driver where to go and they were off.

If someone's laughing, do you instantly think they're laughing at you? Egh no, not really. I’ve had people laugh at me but I do know about it; I’ve never felt paranoid like this. What is the strangest thing you've been asked? My mom’s masseuse asked me if I was pregnant after taking a good look at me and deciding I looked familiar. It felt weird and eerie until I told my parents about it the next day and they said “Oh yeah, she’s the one with the third eye.” Didn’t feel as strange after that, but at the time when she looked me dead in the eye and asked me that question it was definitely so weird lmao. What’s the weirdest thing about life that people just accept as normal? Sometimes I wonder how people from the far past got to decide how certain animals were safe to eat even though they a) clearly scream danger, b) have such a complex way of being consumed (like crabs), or c) ARE STRAIGHT UP POISONOUS (like the pufferfish in Japan). But hey, we’re all eating them right now.

What was your favorite game as a child? I liked local games. We had langit-lupa (heaven and earth), piko (hopscotch), ice-ice water (freeze tag), Chinese garter, 10-20, and patintero. What’s the stupidest thing you've ever heard? Anything that comes out of conservative Catholics’ mouths.

What's the most random thing you've done out of boredom? It would have to be that time that I got really depressed last December and I spent all my Christmas savings meant for friends and family on a bunch of coloring books and my own set of coloring pencils. All for myself. It’s a little morbid, but whaever. What show did your parents not let you watch as a kid? My parents were pretty liberal and weren’t too strict about shows. My mom absolutely hated Mr. Bean though because she was convinced he was the reason my brother didn’t start talking until he was like 6. She would change the channel if it was on, but she didn’t outright ban us or anything. What is your personal catchphrase? I don’t have one. What is the most pleasurable feeling that doesn't involve anything sexual? Biting into your favorite food after a whole day of not eating. What was your 'Oops, wrong person' moment? I really can’t bring myself to be into the muscular/buff look and don’t mind if someone is on the bigger side, is skinny, or is generelly not a gym person. What’s the dumbest thing you’ve done drunk? Technically not mine, but Gabie would lend me a windbreaker-type of jacket that was very colorful. It was green, yellow, pink, basically a very bright and gay jacket. I got complimented on it EVERY SINGLE TIME I wore it by nearly every single person who passed by me in school – and I wish I was kidding lmao. She got it in Baguio for 50 pesos ($1), it’s insane. OMG hahaha so there were times in internship where nothing was tasked to me FOR HOURS and I would get super bored. Then I remember hearing from somewhere that Wikipedia has a whole article that’s just a list of unusual deaths that’s happened from modern history until the present, and I gobbled that shit up until I was given a responsibility. I found out more listicles they apparently had – list of last words, list of people who disappeared mysteriously, etc; read all of those too. What's a book you were made to read in school that you really liked? My #1 would have to be Without Seeing the Dawn by Steven Javellana. It’s the most honest narration of the Philippines’ Japanese occupation I’ve ever read. It’s painful to read, but it’s the beauty of it. What objective did you fail to complete this week? I told myself I was gonna start externals work for my org, but I’ve just been so burned out in the last month that I haven’t gotten around to starting yet. I definitely have to this week, though so it’s not like I’ll completely fail it. What could have gotten worse for you but it didn't? Tbh the desire to end my life? I threw in the towel by the time I was 12, but I’m still here so I guess life is doing something right.

What subject should be taught at schools, but isn't? Adulting. Like being taught about taxes, social security, insurance, documents they ask when you apply for a job, etc. I’m 21 and I know nothing about these. I didn’t even know what insurance meant until I was 20. What is the best thing about having a Significant Other? The idea of having a go-to person for everything is very comforting for me. What makes you unusually uncomfortable? Distorted sound effects. It’s probably not unusual though. What is an upcoming purchase you're excited about? It’s no longer future tense because I was finally able to find Pop-Tarts at the nearby mall! I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE in the last couple of years and I’ve been craving it for the same period of time. Then Gab convinced me to try the supermarket at the mall we went to today and we found a box of Chocolate Fudge gloriously sitting on one of the shelves. It was way more expensive than I remember it being, but I waited for so long that I just grabbed it and didn’t care about my budget anymore. What is the worst game you've ever played? The Hannah Montana game for the Wii that I had was so bad it was good. What’s the oddest thing you like to do? I don’t think I have particularly odd habits. What's the funniest news story you've seen in the past few weeks? There’s a satirical article I came across a week ago that was about how dinosaurs got extinct because they ate pineapples on pizza. It was made even more hilarious by the fact that it included a graphic of dinosaurs and there were slices of pizza with pineapples on them photoshopped into the graphic. Definitely pissed off a number of pineapple enthusiasts that day lmaaaaao. What do you really really want right now? I’m so excited to eat my Pop-Tarts but I think I should save them for tomorrow. What do you hide from people? Suicidal thoughts, because I never wanna bother anyone. What was the first sign you knew you had a crush on someone? When I actively avoided her because it hurt to see her. HAHAHAH yuck drama What's the best lemonade you've made from the lemons life gave you? Lasting long enough to create a family in the form of my orgmates. Who was your cartoon crush while growing up? Sam from Totally Spies. What's the best way to deal with religious door knockers? We don’t have that culture here but I most likely would just never open the door. What’s the most hypocritical thing you’ve ever seen or heard? A large chunk of Catholics. Who’s the most interesting person you’ve ever met? When I was still interning at my PR firm, I shadowed my supervisor in an interview that one of our clients had for that day. Our client’s representative is the biggest badass I’ve met. He’s from South Africa and was born and raised at a time when apartheid was still around. He’s white, so he was brainwashed in school to think that they were superior and for a time, he really thought his race was. Then he got to work under Nelson Mandela’s party when he was much older and that was the only time he realized how backwards that mindset was. Anyway he had Mandela’s spies stalk his ass every single day because of his background and he ultimately got shot twice. There’s loads more stories to tell but I don’t want to give him away.

When I was watching him get interviewed he proved to have a lot of knowledge on history and current events too so that’s another plus. He was just super cool and it was a breath of fresh air to talk to a foreigner that was more aware of social situations than the average Filipino. What just doesn't impress you? Carly Rae Jepsen. What’s the worst possible way to introduce yourself? There’s no worst way; just don’t try too hard because the bullshit can be detected so easily. What makes you wish that you were born in the past or the future? How easy it was to make a living and score a job decades ago. What tragic event was coincidentally beneficial to you? My breakup. What's something people are proud of, but it doesn't impress you? ‘Miracles.’ What's the worst possible moment to go and play on a bouncy castle? Doing it with a bunch of sweaty, rowdy kids. Who is the greatest ever comedian? Not really into comedians so my recommendations might suck for some. What’s your irrational fear? Commercials at night. What's your oldest memory? time to think about various story ideas ive had, yeehaw

ACitDS - Thomas trying to find their parents amidst the angel/demon war. pretty neat. I wanted to make a game out of it so the player could decide which way Thomas swung in terms of angel/demon, giving leeway for players who made mechanical choices against the ‘moral’ choice (cause like, split progression, man. it was gonna be pretty flexible and based mostly on choices within the world, though one route was locked behind a specific skill progression).

ACB - ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. war story about a commander trying to protect their homeland, except they arent even a commander in that homeland, and also its just really complicated. I like the individual characters i guess, even if im pretty sure Black themself was... not... my best character. I’ve made more ableist ones (hhhhhh) but that wasn’t my finest, so acb would need a total rehaul to fix that sorta thing. characters neat though.

SFY/414 - the whole gang of criminals help a guard catch other criminals story. or gay suicide squad, as you wish. i like my characters, and i like a whole lot of it, and i like the world. the core premise is a lil shaky but if you get past it, fun times, i think. i love tamjol especially.

SFY/425 - i dont know shit about the civil war plot except that tamjol is there and gets accused of being a traitor after his group finds out he’s a Shonyul, thats a fun one. thats basically the only thing i know for certain about it, that those scenes happen, and maybe one where he confronts his “father” directly, idk, weird stuff all around.

SFY/BTH/386 - sailing time. theres a storm, a mutiny, a second bloodier mutiny, and then a whole ass dragon eats like 2 whole boats without warning, god damn.

CCC - we have established i think that idea slapped i just never wrote shit. i dont remember any of their names. i just know some fuckers got lazered in the chest. tight.

Codename Seren - oh no

Codename Sworl - uhhh bunch of aliens get sent to earth disguised as teen girls to track down a different group of aliens. i remember nothing except that the sworl Charlotte ended up falling in love with a girl called Aaliyah (??????) who was actually one of the enemy aliens, and also that the sworl overlords were trash. everything else, big ol’ no clue.

Royalty Story - uhhh country being run by Queen Adelaide acting as regent for her like, 21 year old son, but then she gets taken captive by this woman named Hazel who starts running the kingdom, forcing Adelaides three kids to flee the castle and try and find a solution. idk what was going on. the kids were Jackson, Morgan, Lillian, in order, iirc? cause the naming scheme was -an (sound). i thought it was neat. Lillian was the only one who shortened her name, to i like just Lilli, but Jackson was never Jack. they were neat.

SoaCS - pirate sets off a curse that means they are followed by a terrible icy storm, ends up being cast overboard by their (new) crew and saved by a woman on an island, who then also helps them escape when the storm ravages her home. then they go on a whole thing try to fix the mistake that HE made, resulting in them going back to where he had abandoned his crew in search of treasure. lotta fun. he even directly saves her life at a point where he had failed/refused to save one of his old partners last time, which was neat, but overall she was saving his ass. fun times. never wrote much for that.

Shadow Huntress- idk theres a girl called Blake and shes aways running because she thinks if she stops people will notice the scars of battle with like, The Darkness. physical battle, but also the emotional toll. ends up mentoring a few of her classmates who became hunters sort of incidentally. idk.

TDoC - so theres a demon king in the center of the lake, and around this lake are a bunch of cities with demon lords. and you have to kill the demon lords in order in order to be able to access the demon king and kill him. and there was a mechanic in place where you could only kill one demon lord/king. so the new party who is trying to free themselves from demon rule is accompanied by a group who tried many years prior, and in the first battle one of them fucking dies while trying to kill the lord because it turns out! that in the last attempt! he had succeeded in laying the final blow, and his soul was forever weakened and could not withstand the demonic energy this time, so from the outside he basically stabbed down at this demon lords week spot and then the second his blade made contact there was a burst of energy and he collapses like a sag of bricks who barely lives to the end of the battle to explain what happened. that was neat. i like the idea of the party by the time they get to the demon king being people who had all killed a demon lord, meaning they shouldnt be able to kill the king, but then they all manage to deal the final blow together, with their combined souls withstanding the initial burst of energy and killing him. whether they all die afterwards or just kinda pass the fuck out to be found by their allies outside who react to the demonic death wail, idk. i think its neat. that end sounds kinda cliche but presumably they had their best soldiers (demon killers) and then a handful of people with them who HADNT killed a demon who should have been able to, except the king could fucking smell em and wiped the floor with them early, knocking them out or killing them to focus on toying with the ones he wanted revenge on. I’m down for that. cause then its slightly less of a like, “twist”, since in the planning to kill the king SOMEONE would have noticed that they had to send some non-heroes :P So make sure you do, I guess.

TFOS - princess vs dragon, she has a gun and she wants revenge for her older sister and aso to save her kingdom. aided by a mage a knight and a rogue, bunch of lesbian mfers fighting dragons, Nice.

TFT - proto GGS, main difference was that becoming a demigod was essentially randomised and that there was like. a god of computers. who i think i reworked as a god of technology? or something? tech generally, not computer tech. idk. cherry was cute.

WTDD - the worlds surface is a series of spinning gears with cities and towns on them, and the gears all powered a music box below the earth which kept this colossal dragon asleep. and then one day the gears stop and the dragon wakes up. something like that. the initial thing was world is gears, but id probably shift it to a city or an area? cause the idea of a city constantly rotating sucks ass. admittedly that was straight up the reason the gears stopped in the initial writing, because the villain (??) was sick of the rotation ad fucking. blew a gear up. nice.

YD3N - uhh bunch of robots? one for eac letter of the alphabet (so there was Aden, Byden, Cyden, Dyden, Eden, etc) and Yd3n was the source of all of them. and then a robot called syd3n manages to escape and finds the aid of a local engineer called Ignis Lex, and they try to free their siblings and especially Yd3n, and find out the purpose for the alphabet crew. fun fact, this entire story came about because on the way home from uni I saw a dude in front of me with a jumper that said ‘Sydney’, except the last y was covered and my brain misread what was left as Syden, which is why theyre the protag. Neat.
