J - Do they collect anything?
She’s a bit of a packrat at the pawn shop. The novel literally says that she never refuses an item. But the novel also says that she doesn’t really have a lot of personal belongings, friends, or hobbies prior to the events of the novel.
But after the novel? I think Jackie really gets into taking and saving mementos of days she spends with people she cares about. One of her mom’s spoons (now that she remembers where she puts the silverware). A movie ticket from when she took Josh out during one of Diane’s PTA meetings. A coffee-stained napkin from the Moonlight All-Night, from one of Jackie and Diane’s weekly coffee dates. A beaker from Carlos’ lab. A pen from Dana’s office, despite pens being illegal. A blood stained cassette from the radio station. A gum wrapper that was folded into a spider, from the night Abby, Steve, and Cecil invited Carlos, Josh, and Jackie to Janice’s ballet fight. A magazine from the first mall trip she went on as a romantic triad with Michelle and Maureen.
She keeps all of these in shoe boxes under her bed - often asking the Faceless Old Woman to please just leave those boxes alone - and sometimes, after listening to Cecil’s show, Jackie will just take the mementos out and look at them. She never wants to forget again.
Also, on a lighter note, she also collects records which she can’t listen to because she doesn’t yet have a licence to own a record player. But she has a fuck ton of records.
A - Do they have any pet peeves?
She. cannot. stand. condescending comments. Don’t talk down to her, don’t act as if you’re superior. It makes her feel like a child and, while she looks like a young woman, she isn’t. It gives her a problem with authority figures, mostly, because they tend to assume they know better than her purely because they’re authority figures and she looks to be a young adult. She still has a grudge with former high school friend after said friend started to patronize and condescend to Jackie (mentioned below); this feud is part of the reason Jackie and Diane don’t quite gel together at first; homegirl Jackie don’t fuck around when it comes to being belittled.
There’s trying to get her to understand and then there’s belittling her into listening to you. She’s physically young and definitely inexperienced and sheltered about a lot of things but she is not gonna take condescension lying down.
C - Have they ever lost anyone close to them?
Okay, so, I know you haven’t read the novel (and, like, I’m sure many of my followers haven’t) but Jackie has been alive for decades, if not a century or two. She’s been 19 for longer than she can remember. It’s canon that all of Jackie’s high school friends have grown old and many have passed away.
“The rest of her friends hadn’t stopped at 19. They had gotten older, living full lives. They had tried to stay in touch, but it was difficult as they moved on to adult careers and kids and retirement…and Jackie just kept being 19 years old…”
““Oh, Jackie, do you ever just think of turning 20?”
[Noelle Connolly and Jackie] had been friends since sophomore Spanish class. But Noelle had been 58 at the point she had finally asked Jackie that question, and spoke in tones that felt sickeningly parental to Jackie. Jackie had said so and Noelle had become openly condescending. And they had both hung up. And she and Noelle had never spoken again.”
-W.elcome To N.ight V.ale Novel, chapter 3
She hasn’t had a friend in decades. Probably not since Noelle. So, yeah, she’s lost basically all of her friends from her youth.
K - Do they have a quote that they live by?
Before the events of the novel, it’s probably “What doesn’t kill you will try again soon. Be on the look out.” She tends to keep her head down, keep to her routine, and avoid danger and trouble.
But after novel, it’s definitely the quote Dana tells her - “You say your life is unraveling. Your life cannot unravel. Your life is your life. You haven’t lost it, it’s just… different now.” Her pre-novel routine no longer exists and…Jackie doesn’t really WANT an entirely set routine. So she uses this quote from Dana to remind herself, even in times of trouble, that she is still here - for what it’s worth, and her life still matters to at least her and the people she’s touched.
I - How they feel about tattoos? Do they have any?
She thinks they’re about as cool as any other body modifications - be that piercings or horn implants or vocal cord surgery. She’s not sure if she’d get a tattoo herself. She really likes the ones that move or the ones that change color with her emotions but those are pricier and she just bought new racing stripes for the Mercedes… She might get a tattoo down the line but it’s not high priority.
E - Do they have a good relationship with their siblings?
She adores Josh. Her mother was right - there is no such thing as a “half” sibling, regardless of what her and Josh’s DNA said. And it took some time for Jackie to adjust to the change in their relationship. She didn’t ALWAYS view Josh as her brother - after all, she didn’t KNOW he was her brother until recently. But he’s definitely crossed the line from “could be brother” to “definite brother” and Jackie loves him. She loves trying to help him - from relationship trouble to just teaching him how to drive. Even if he wasn’t her brother, Josh is the son of someone who is the closest thing to a best friend Jackie’s had in decades…so, even if they weren’t related, Jackie would STILL adore him.
