I love how the apparent solution to Tumblr being "too confusing" is to just make it look as much like Twitter as possible. Are Twitter users truly so stupid that you have to completely wash away Tumblr's UI identity so they can figure out how to use the damn site? Maybe I'm too hopeful, but I sincerely think Twitter users could figure it out??? There are certainly things that could be streamlined and change is inevitable etc but did they have to make a change that so radically changes the CORE tumblr experience??? good lord

damn guess I've gotta either stick to mobile or suffer through the agony of using using the twitblr update because while dashboard-unfucker does work to a degree, it also just. shoved my feed all to the very left side of the screen on my desktop and I'm too unfamiliar with how github or any of that works to be able to know how to troubleshoot so uh. yeah. i'm fucked I suppose!

i mentioned this in the tags of a post the other day but i want to share more of my vintage tumblr memories for those who werent there to experience them (you lucked out)
the block button didnt do anything except hide that blog from your notifications. they could still follow you and interact with all your posts you just wouldnt see it in your activity.
pursuant to that, if someone violated your DNFI (blog rules were called DNFIs before they were called BYFs before they were called DNIs) and you wanted them off your blog the only option was to send them an ask saying "unfollow me" and hope on the honor system they did.
this is probably why callouts were such a massive part of the blogging ecosystem , if someone annoyed you or was mildly problematic the only sure way to get them to stop was to run them off the site completely.
you probably remember that being able to actually disable reblogs on a post is a pretty new feature, before that it was part of the same honor system as DNFIs. in the old days there were roving gangs of troll blogs solely dedicated to finding vent posts tagged "dont reblog" and reblogging them, including copying over text that was in the tags / readmore.
to evade the troll blogs people had to start tagging their posts with increasingly obtuse typing quirks like "d0%t r38l09". speaking of tags,
the habit of adding slashes to the end of trigger tags is because tumblrs search feature and url parsing used to be Even More Dogshit than it is now and if a tag had certain characters in it (hyphens and i believe asterisks also worked) you couldnt browse it on the blog. this was considered good etiquette to show you cared about your followers wellbeing by not letting them doomscroll the trigger tags, and also made it harder for trolls to find triggering pics to spam your inbox with when you had a controversial take on steven universe ship dynamics. sometimes people just added a bunch of random numbers to the end of a tag like "blood 363820" which had the same effect of making it unsearchable but still worked for the blacklist because
blacklisting was a browser extension. you couldnt blacklist on the app for YEARS. old school users remember when xkit was an actual necessity to interact with the site. ancient school users remember tumblr savior.
this post is already too long so lets do a lightning round: having your blog index page automatically redirect to your aesthetic tag. custom cursors with particle effects. everyones blog being an unreadable pastel-on-white 8pt text nightmare. alternatively, everyones blog being a garish red-on-black knife emoji nightmare. follow forevers. i hear promo hour still survives as a relic population in some circles. kin pages with 75 grid icons sorted into literally me / primary / secondary / tertiary with discrete DNFI rules. every personal post being tagged "lms if read". post limit blogs. hunger games simulator and xyzzy and rabb.it and drawpile and skype groupchats. if you remember tanburu honestly you should be getting paid survivors benefits. i could list a bunch of big name callouts that would overtake some of you with a precipitous feeling of dread but i wont because i know some of them are still on this website Right Now. im not even a real Tumblr Old i was 11 years old in 2014 and i know the true elders have secrets i cannot comprehend. its so dark in here. i remember when DMs were new.

idk how xkit works with filtering but #ace discourse cuz i do Not want to tag this post LOL
god this is so petty but people acting like demisexuality is a stupid concept/that people who identify as such "just need to go outside" is so irritating to me bc they invariably have a really shallow/incomplete understanding of what demisexuality is (not that it's typically explained well)
idkkkkkkk i know it varies from person to person but like. its weird for people to act like "being wholly uninterested in casual dating/hookups with strangers" is a universal experience when it is demonstrably not lmao
like i get that some people are annoying about it but just... i dont get why people are acting like "being interested in casual dating/sex" = "being obsessed with sex" whenever people talk about this.... like i have friends who enjoy casual sex and casual dating and i Do Not and that doesnt mean i think theyre obsessed w/ sex? omfg....
i wouldnt argue that its an axis of oppression (like, there have been situations where ive personally felt pressured into relationship dynamics i didnt like but that is Not unique to demi people at all) but it can still be useful as an identifier?
anyways im demi and i go outside every day :) i even touch grass now that i live in a state where i dont have to worry about ticks in my yard

hi! i hope you dont mind me asking for help with the dash unfucker, because i just can't seem to get it working. ive seen that other people were having trouble with it today because of updates from Tamper and tumblr; ive seen you suggested updating to the newest version. ive done this, as well as completely uninstalling/reinstalling both unfucker and TM (AND restarting my computer), but nothing so far has gotten it back to working on my dashboard. this has been extra frustrating because apparently, from what i can see, unfucker was also the only thing allowing xkit rewritten to function, so now all that's gone too. i guess im mostly asking if you have any suggestions? or if anyone else has brought up unfucker not working even post v5.5.1; are you going to be updating it again soon? even if not, thanks in advance, i appreciate what you've done! unfucker really makes tumblr loads more bearable to use these days
i don't mind at all!
are there any related errors in the console? to be honest i have zero idea what would cause it to just fail completely as it seems to work just fine on TM 5.0.0 for me. i usually use violentmonkey, not sure if that would make any difference.
not quite sure what you mean about xkit rewritten as it definitely doesn't rely on this script, so if neither are working then it might be a browser error of some sort.

hey guys, anyone else having an issue where the "tumblrs" section in the search just doesnt work? ex: normally my blog would show up with my icon and stuff but it just doesnt.
ive disabled xkit rewritten, and dashboard unfucker and the issue wasnt resolved so i dont think it could be caused by those.
When i pulled up a chrome tab (im using firefox) the "tumblrs" search worked normally, it also worked on Microsoft edge. Ive had someone else try on diff browsers, they reported that it was broken on safari.

Hey, I struggle with tumblr mostly because of how teddious it is to type out tags and how the tags dissappear when you reblog something. Is there some magical function I'm missing? For moblie or desktop?
I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but a few things -XKit Rewritten for desktop adds some tag functionality-- quick reblogs make it quicker to type them, and you can have an autotagger functioning, for example, my autotagger will automatically add my "ask" tag(foxasks) to this as well as your username because i have it configured to do so
-On mobile using the app, your only option is basically to type the tags, though im not sure whats extra tedious about this part
As for disappearing, thats the purpose, they are supposed to be individual to each reblogger. However XKit allows you to set autotagger to automatically copy over either the source or the previous rb's tags. I believe mobile allows you to do something similar, but i dont think ive used that functionality so if any of my followers have experience chime in
If i totally missed the point on this question feel free to ask further clarifying questions, im utterly fried so my brain is only half working

okay im gonna be blunt here but for anyone new to tumblr/not sure how it works, im gonna tell you right now that even if you dont look like a bot but still never reblog anything: im going to block you from now on
like i understand if you dont want to spam things, dont understand tags, etc.
for me personally i tend to spam like a lot of stuff and then later on ill go through my likes and queue everything so i dont spam my tl as much
as far as tags go, they dont reeeally matter in the long run unless you want to be able to find certain things again or want others to or just want to ramble about a post without bothering the person who posted
if youre on desktop i highly recommend the xkit extension which has all kinds of useful little tools that make tumblr a thousand times better but also a quick reblog/queue system that i personally love
you can find queue info and settings in the settings tab to control how many posts a day the queue posts for you and you can put literally hundreds of posts into it and it will slowly post them for you (source: i had about 500 posts in my queue at one point and everyday i put more lmao)
again, tags dont really matter as much and you dont have to reblog every post you see or like but there is no algorithm to this site and seeing my notes full of blank blogs is a little annoying ngl

felt on the OC names thing, every guy I have has been some version of "untitled (archetype) document" in my brain for literal years because I'm that bad/indecisive with names. If it's any help if you do rename your guy, xkit has a tag replacer that works really well so you can adjust the archive?
ya ive got the tag replacer on lock :D thats also why several of my tags are like, "xigbar scholarship tag" or "furry tag" or someth until i come up with something clever and whimsical
at the very least renaming lamia now will be a lot easier than coming up with a name from scratch, i dont feel like im under any pressure to come up with one Now so i can start writing about him, and also i've really fleshed him out more!

FINALLY FIGURED OUT WHAT THE HELL THE OLD REBLOGS ARE CALLED. i think theyre called something like nested blockquote reblogs??? thing is i still cant find a way to make them appear that way on my dash. im not giving up yet but it is incredibly frustrating that the only things ive found are from 2015 and they dont even work anymore. xkit DID have a way to customize the appearance of reblogs however this got removed at some point. which i think as far as i can tell is bc it only worked with the original post editor??? sucks, but im gonna keep trying, and will continue to try until i can actually make my tumblr dashboard look old.

and like. dont even get me started on sharing. do you have any idea how hard it is to get eyes on your work as a writer? im so fucking serious people need to reblog fic links like they reblog fanart. everyone talks about a second kudos but i almost never get reblogs. its literally two buttons. one if you have xkit installed or if youre on mobile. i dont even care if you make your own post with the link bc you hated the way i formatted my post. its so important and we just. augh. i feel underappreciated. thats my point
im so eternally sad that like. most people just dont comment on fic anymore. like. the shorter fics i can understand but i poured so much of myself into sticks and stones. hell i wrote a 125k beast of a fic that garnered a single comment at the very end of its eight month weekly update run. and that shit was soul crushing. i spent months of my life on this one story yknow? would it kill you to tell me if you liked one little detail?
