analysis: SSR Under The Milky Way, luke pearce, and dichotomies that make him a wonderfully contradictory mess of a character and make this love story one i really adore

(wow, thats a mouthful of a title. cuz this is a mouthful of a post)

obligatory disclaimer that these are just my own thoughts and interpretations. spoilers for up to luke's personal story 4, his anniv card obviously, and other cards here and there too

luke is a mess

hes Such a Mess. i dont mean this in the "physical space organization" tho that is hilariously canon (pls whenever we're in the 2nd floor of his building i cant stop focusing on the papers on the floor, one of them literally under the leg of the table, MY MAN PICK UP UR FILES JHSDVFKJSDH), but i mean it in the emotional sense. and i also mean it so lovingly, cuz it's among the many things i love abt his character. hes so messy, he has so many character traits that i'd classify as flaws and faults that make him interesting to endlessly rotate in my brain, hes SUCH A MESS IN SO MANY WAYS and he even says this outright in his personal story 3 as a general statement

and after i read his personal story 4 and then his anniv card, his mess was at the forefront of my brain because it ultimately made his anniv card So Satisfying in terms of scratching certain story itches ive got, in terms of addressing his emotional messiness thru the crux of his romantic relationship with mc

and i'll get to that in different portions of this post. but first, i wanna lay down one by one what causes his mess; dichotomies in how he thinks and how mc acts as the other side as the narrative foil, and how all this adds up to a love story i really, really love

inevitability vs. hope

i’ll start with the most obvious one. ever since luke’s personal story 1 allllll the way up to this anniv card, the inevitability of his illness and his limited lifespan prognosis looms over and informs the decisions he makes. which, yknow, makes sense. thats a Heavy Thing to have to deal with, and luke for a large amount of his story doesnt want this to be anybody else’s problem but his exactly Because it’s heavy. it’s sad and upsetting and causes worry, and ever since luke was a kid, he was already beginning to harbor a guilt for hurting other people or bringing bad upon their lives (mentioned and shown in SSR Shape Of You)

even after personal story 4—after he’s made the decision to tell mc the whole truth—he is still convinced of this inevitability. hes so convinced that he sent the letter and skedaddled elsewhere to give mc time and space to think it all through without being clouded by the heat of the moment.

hes so convinced that once mc confesses back to him, he argues with her (sidenote: my GOD getchu a love interest who, in the Confession Card, is literally trying so hard to get the main character to pick ANYBODY BUT HIM because he thinks it’d hurt less. my heart aches SO MUCH). he throws the inevitability of his death in her face, as if to scare her away.

while the whole inevitability thing is so obvious in luke like, Everywhere in his thoughts and stories, i also realized it’s subliminally communicated through even the settings and symbols that are linked to him.

luke runs an antique shop, he’s into photography and takes pictures as memories, he’s got his treasure box filled with things from the past, he’s Always bringing up fond anecdotes of his and mc’s childhood: all of these are things have the concept of the passage of time intrinsic to them, and time passing to luke is something that brings his inevitability closer and closer. so all these symbols implying time are also focused on the past specifically, when things were happier because he’s sure his future can only cause pain.

and mc, of course, is the foil to inevitability. first, she focuses on a portion of time that isnt past or future: the present.

in luke’s personal story 4 when aaron not so subtly grills her about “dangerous professions” of somebody she loves, she says this:

and then when you pick the second choice here in the anniv card (which i did), she says the following lines

while there’s still time, she says.

this sentiment from mc doesnt just crop up here. cherishing the present is something she brings up many times across several stories (off the top of my head: SR Radiant Sunlight and luke’s personal story 2 during that whole story with Zero) and it’s clear that to her, yes, the past and the future are important, the former being a time none of them can return to and the latter being filled with uncertainty, but now matters so much as well. maybe it matters even more, taking into account how uncertain tomorrow will be.

the second thing mc brings to face luke’s inevitability shtick is related to uncertainty: hope.

luke’s prognosis is dire, but as long as he’s alive now in the present, theres still a chance. theres still hope. going back to that scene in luke’s personal story 4 where aaron is grilling mc, she says:

and then immediately after this she cites wedding vows which luke secretly overhears outside still holding the fucking kettle, oh my GOD, i CANNOT TAKE THESE TWO…

back on topic tho, this bit shows that mc’s view of the uncertainty of a future with a lover in constant danger (and “constant danger” in this specific scene is in regards to luke’s job, yeah, but also has pretty obvious parallels to his illness as well: pain can and will happen) skews towards something more balanced than luke’s concept of inevitability. her view is more of like…we can’t ever be sure. and that doesn’t just make space for pain, but it makes space for hope too.

and this view isnt only for his illness to be treated, but for his and mc’s relationship as well.

which brings me to this line, the line that Broke Me and also made me think “OKAY EVERYBODY, PACK IT UP, GO HOME, THE WINNER OF BEST CONFESSION IS NONE OF THE BOYS, IT’S ACTUALLY MC!!!” this is what she says:

i know, it seems simple at first but listen. Listen. this is….so good and so perfect for them. this line has two key parts, the verb and the subjects, and i first wanna talk about the verb: believe.

belief is not rooted on things that are sure. believing in something, anything, is acknowledging there are things that cant be controlled or fully known but taking that chance anyway. belief is faith, belief is hope, and these things as a cornerstone for love is so important to luke/mc cuz it shows how much they matter to each other and that uncertainties arent a dealbreaker but a call to hope and believe and love. mc believes and pleads luke to believe too, believe in her and in them together

which now brings me to the next dichotomy

luke vs. mc

luke, when bringing up his fear of inevitable grief hurting mc, words his feelings in a very particular way. in the anniv card, he says

worded another way, this could go “i could follow my heart, but at the cost of her happiness.”

this is what he thinks the price of his happiness is: mc’s own. and it’s indicative of something i noticed about luke wayyy back in lost gold, that he has the habit of pitting him and mc against each other, particularly his desires against mc’s emotions.

if he is to indulge in what will give him joy, he will rob mc of hers. if he is to value his life, he will ruin mc’s life (actually to bring up SSR Shape Of You again (SORRY IT RLLY IS JUST SUCH A FAVE CARD OF MINE) this is taken further to the (past childhood) implication of like…if he even just exists, he will ruin mc’s life). if he “wins”, she “loses”

this kind of thinking is cuz he is still, up till now—even after he had said in personal story 4 that he said that the secrets he’s got concerns them both—not seeing himself and mc as a team. he’s seeing himself and mc as two people on different sides and only one of them can get out of this with their heart intact.

and of course, as is usual with luke pearce, he’d always rather the winner to be her.

so now i wanna go back to mc’s line which Broke Me™. “You have to believe in me…In us.” awhile ago i was talking about the verb but now i shift to the subject.

mc wants luke to believe in her, which is already in itself something that would hit luke emotionally. afterall, every single argument hes saying is supposedly for her own good, yet he also told her that he’d respect whatever her decision was. if he really, truly does love her, she should listen to her, trust her, and believe in her. going further, she wants him to believe in her and him together.

because thats what a relationship is supposed to be, even a platonic one and doubly so for a romantic one. the people are still individuals, yes, but theyre not on different teams, theyre not supposed to be with one more important than the other, theyre supposed to be side by side as equals, together.

in the verb and subjects of “You have to believe in me…In us.”, mc asks luke to rethink inevitability and indulge in faith, she asks him get rid of the divide he’s put between them that says both of them being happy is impossible.

and in response to this, luke says “...I do.”

cue kiss scene of the anniv card. of course, the crowd cheers, crowd goes wild (the crowd is me) as they kiss. it is so SO satisfying because these two things that luke has struggled with are met with an equal and kinder force coming from mc. the buildup is sublime and crests towards this moment and it is so sweet and tender and amazing.

and then luke’s self-deprecation busts through the wall again. which brings me to the last dichotomy

“how can i ask anyone to love me” vs. “when all i do is beg to be left alone”

the prior dichotomies all had luke as one side and mc as the other, but this last one is different. these are both two sides within only luke and i wanna talk about it not through narrative foils but through the lens of how characters change.

but first lemme explain: the above bits in the quotation marks are lyrics from the song Left Alone by Fiona Apple and theyre really neat lyrics that succinctly articulate a super common contradictory experience, one luke lays out in full with his depressing explanation for his depressing song choice for the music box

after he says all this, mc reassures luke that she loves him and understands that his contradictory actions we are stemming not from cowardice but from the fact he loves and cares about her (and that it all just got mucked up with mixed signals and actions like this because of //gestures at aforementioned two dichotomies). and mc is right wonderful, i love that, shes wonderful!!

but what im drawn to here though is less of the resolution of this issue but the fact that this speech from luke made me realize one thing ive adored about his character ever since the beginning: because of his love manifesting into contradictory desires, he not only goes through character development, but moments of character regression as well. he not only changes for the better, but he has moments where he backslides and relapses into old bad habits.

“why, zak, why do you love this in a character??? are you a SADIST???” yeah, i am. but i do also have valid reasons JHVJKSHDVFS.

on a personal level, i find it’s more realistic and genuine as to how stuff happens with real people. i cant speak for everyone, but as somebody with [redacted mental bad times], seeing a character have moments of going back to bad habits feels great to me cuz in real life, the road of recovery or being a better person isnt always linear. sometimes it’s like this, it’s 1 step forward, 1 step back.

on a story level though, character development and character regression both happening does two things:

1) it highlights just how strong the motives and rationale of the old ways are, which increases the depth of the character and their traits

like, luke has several regression moments in the anniv card alone. first one is one he mentions, he said he’d accept whatever mc’s decision was but his first instinct that he Did act on was to argue with her because it is so ingrained in him to think of her choosing him as the Wrong choice to make, the choice that will lead her to sadness, and he loves her so much that he doesnt want her to go through that.

another smaller backslide moment is that he Runs Away in this card. remember luke’s xmas partyland card, SR A Star in the Palm? the card luke word for word tells mc “I promise that from now and forever, I’ll never try to run from you ever again.”? well, while luke explains in his anniv card his rationale for lying to mc that he’s out of town the moment he sends the letter, that rationale doesnt trump the fact that he still ran away and gave her no information on how to find him (thank u aaron for immediately fessing luke’s location, god bless)

also, he lied to her. ding ding ding, pretty sure he said he’d stop doing that!!! but him running and lying once again highlights how much he once thought his absence in mc’s life would be better for her, he has to be Not There when she reads the letter so his presence doesnt lead her into a choice thatd result in her sadness.

the second thing character development and character regression both happening does is

2) ensures change

brief segue, but for the longest time, i had always known that i personally get bored with perfect characters. characters who always succeed, who never doubt, and whose flaws (if theyve got any) are largely minimal and do not affect the story. and only when i started writing this analysis did i realize why i get bored with perfect characters: there’s nowhere else to go for them.

if theyre perfect, they wont backslide. and if theyre perfect, they cant get any better because theyve already Gotten There. theyre stagnant, and what i personally love to see in stories, among many other things, is a character changing.

luke is so flawed and imperfect and this delights me to no end. his faults ensure theres room for him to improve, and he does. he makes promises, he changes for the better. and once hes done that, theres space for him to regress and fuck up all over again, which emphasizes his traits, beliefs, and what matters to him.

and once hes a step back, theres space for him to take a step forward again because if theres one thing so sublimely clear about luke, it’s that he tries. he keeps on fighting even if it looks like an impossible fight, and in this card, he does this because he loves mc, because he believes in her, because he believes in them together.

so. luke is a mess for so many reasons, and to me, that makes him one hell of an interesting character with some fantastic stories. it makes his and mc’s love story one that focuses on hope, togetherness, and change.

and these kinds of stories, messy ones that have room for characters to fail and also have room for characters to get better, are ones that i really love a whole bunch.

okay im like seconds from passing out and this idea has plagued my mind all day SO

The North Pole AU

hopper is santa claus and joyce is mrs claus (like actually the jolly old elf not a mall santa, the real actual santa claus)

obviously dustin, lucas, will, mike, el, and max are elves (dustin and lucas are in toy engineering, will is in toy design, mike is in broken toy repair, el is in cookie making, and max is a toy tester)

steve is the head elf, jonathan is the chief mall santa coordinator, nancy is the government correspondent, robin is head of the decoration/gift wrapping department, and billy is the reindeer trainer

(yes i made those positions up im having fun also YES steve is the head elf bc i had a crush on bernard from santa clause as a youth and still do dont look at me)

anyways

jonathan loves seeing all the pictures from the mall santas and makes sure they get to the right house and he started in the mail department so he just finds happiness in the behind the scenes stuff that makes a kids christmas magical

nancys government correspondence is primarily focused on keeping the military off of santas trail christmas eve and keeping the north pole a complete secret

robin works in gift wrapping because its easy and she likes finding fun ways to wrap presents and absolutely does "tits now" on all the let it snow wrapping paper AND also does those crazy twenty different boxes wrapping for all her friends

billy kind of keeps to himself and finds peace in tending to the reindeer and hooking them up to the sleigh and getting them exercise, he'll also chop firewood to make sure the Pole is warm for everyone

steve honestly just keeps the ship running smoothly, makes sure everyone is on schedule, hes a pretty laid back guy but still knows how to get everything done on time and makes a mean cup of cocoa

(okay now that backgrounds are kinda tied up, plot ish)

steve works hard bc he loves his job, hop and joyce are like family as are the kids and the other teens, but sometimes he works a little too hard and gets overwhelmed

his quiet place is the loft in one of the barns, its warm and theres a window that he likes to sit in front of and watch the snow fall and has a bunch of hand knitted blankets stashed up there too (most made by claudia who is the head baker)

billy eventually finds this place when hes doing a routine walk through and can see its very clearly someones space and leaves it be but also keeps an eye on the place

obv billy and steve run into each other when billys making his nightly rounds and steve is climbing down the ladder

steves very embarassed bc he kinda just got over a panic attack and his hair is all sweaty and his face is flushed and his eyes are still watery and billy is very straightforward and asks

"is that your hideout up there?"

steve nods and is about to apologize before billy stops him and tells him its okay

they end up going on a walk through the snow just talking about how they ended up where they are and what they left behind, about their favorite traditions, favorite christmas treats, just anything and everything

steve ends up paying attention to billy a bit more after that night, sees him talking to the reindeer, wrestle with some of the lumberjack elves after they drop off wood for the toy making, sees him sneak into the kitchens and sneak some fudge, and just kinda slowly falls in love with him

robin teases steve endlessly, bc he "evaluates" her department the most just to chit chat and gossip (normally about the chick in the holly jolly band robin has a crush on but oh how the turn tables)

(nancy and jonathan are kinda in the loop as in they talk sometimes but its awkward and polite so steve really doesnt take too much stock into their opinions)

it all comes to a head christmas eve, when the whole workshop, all departments, have their big pre flight meeting to make sure everythings in order and to have a little celebration, when billy and steve get stuck under the mistletoe

robin shouts that they have to kiss its the law, with her arm slung over the holly jolly band chick

the kids start chanting which gets everyone else chanting so naturally they kiss

its soft and sweet and too fast but worth it for how red billy is

but billys gotta get the reindeer hooked up and steves gotta do the final check with hop so they have to part and go do their things

(but dont worry, they find each other after lift off for another long walk through the snow with a thermos full of steves famous hot chocolate and end up at a nice little fire outside of billys place for some more of those soft sweet kisses)

event post time lets goooooo. as usual, under the cut there will be some general ideas for event, pls like this post or slide into my ims/dscrd if u wanna plot! i’m trying to be as detailed as possible but like, there is a lot going on, this list probs won’t be exhaustive. i’m also open to p much anything so pls don’t feel limited to any of these plots!! im down for anything!!! either way, continue below the cut if u wanna know more ab what my kids are getting up to (any dates that arent specified i just... didn’t decide on anything and am open to Absolutely anything):

JAEWON:

general: backstage at the concerts is v welcome for any of the days, just idk, hanging out, i’m tryna keep this v general. pros: jaewon is p proud for unity snatching one of the three closing performance slots, dimensions’ pride indeed. cons: he probably has his tits out, jaewon always has his tits out on stage, he rlly lives like this. anyone is allowed to feel whatever way he wants ab either of those two things.

dec 26: jaewon pulls a blue card cuz sexy pool montage of jaewon. ok im kidding (kinda). idk, kick his ass at games, team up w him to crush the competition, drown his stupid ass, literally anything.

dec 26: so SOMEONE learned his lesson from the halloween party, no alcohol at the ball for him. come clown him w/ memories of that night (he sure doesnt have any) or idk, try to talk him into drinking (he won’t)

dec 26: in general, i think jaewon might forego most of the party, just find a quiet spot to hang out, look at the sea or some fake deep shit. if anyone is feeling up to it come hang out w him and, idk, reflect on the past year. it’s a time for realizing stuff. (the muse in question would have to b somewhat close to jaewon for this but like im always down to plot that out!)

dec 27: idk, jaewon will probably forego most of the traveling and exploring, opt for a calm day on board instead, anything re: that is super welcome.

dec 28: jaewon ends up in team red for the day so like, kitchen antics w/ jaewon. he’s a surprisingly good cook (shoutout to grandma park, the real og, for kicking this idiot into the kitchen since a young age)

dec 30: jaewon pulls blue again and... you’d think he wouldn’t be as disgruntled about it? someone pls kick his shins till he accepts going to the spa isn’t such a bad thing sir just relax for one (1) day it will Not kill you

YUANJUN:

dec 26: yuanjun pulls a yellow card cuz dancing king xiao yuanjun sure as hell is fucking involved in this god damn flashmob sUE ME. local enthusiastic dance teacher, will annoy anyone who Doesn’t Want To Be There into having fun and partaking, cutely messing around w people who are having a good time anything you need him to!

dec 26: in their free time after that he’ll def drag someone along to come explore the ship with him so like!!! will they get lost? possibly, but it will be Fun

dec 26: someone decorate sugar cookies w him at the holiday ball pLEASE

dec 27: yuanjun is DEFINTELY exploring the hecc out of taipei, grab dinner w him, go late night shopping w him, sightseeing, ANYTHING

dec 28: he pulls yellow again so you know how it is, photo session at the zoo, you just know he’s going to vibing so hard taking pictures of animals. whether they succeed or not i’m not decided on, im down for either way tbh

29 dec: YUANJUNS BDAY BITCHESSSSSS. ill probs write up an open ab this, but he’s !!!! going to be so annoying the entire day, he WILL be acting like bc has organized this entire thing Just for his 21st bday and u can’t stop him (you can try tho, feel free to attempt and burst his bubble). again, i’ll do a general open for this but if anyone wants to do anything specific for his bday let me kno uwu

30 dec: this time he ends up w a red card and he will be whining and pouting about his, he rlly has to clean up? the day after his birthday? preposterous how dARE they

31 dec: firework go boom and yuanjun WILL be endlessly fascinated by it, idk man why do we let him look at dangerous explosive things. this isn’t an idea but? it could be? i think? idk man

MINAH:

general: someone that teams up w/ minah and makes a pact to try every restaurant on the ship at least once,,, good food is important okay

dec 26: minah pulls blue and... why do they expect her to play pool games? idk man she’s just going to be worried ab people cuz pls don’t drown children. also good luck if u are on a team w her for anything, you’ll probs lose

dec 26: someone,,, come make,,, gingerbread houses w minah,,, i just think it’d be neat,,, pls i need this

dec 26: minah will mourn not having like a classic christmas at home watching stupid movies and shit, someone that sets up some kind of small tradition w her at the ball to make up for it?

dec 28: minah pulls red and wow kitchen work w minah thats neat she knows how to cook this will be easy WRONG ur stuck w her and shes a huge control freak and will correct every little thing you do and jesus christ woman leave them ALONE they’re TRYING

dec 30: minah pulls red,,, again,,, and tbh this time she won’t be as annoying, just some therepeutic cleaning, if ur muse complains ab it tho she might lecture them. alternatively: ur muse pulled yellow and they think they’re being casual but minah calls them out cuz “hey i didnt see u around before have u been slacking???”

dec 31: minahs baby sister minji is attending the busan concert and minah will be over the moon about it, odds are she will chat ur muses’ ear off ab it backstage, sorry not sorry!

YENA:

general: first things first, yena doesn’t have a roommate yet so like,,, any female-presenting muses hit me UPPPP

general: yena will be complaining backstage at the concerts tbh, she’s tryna celebrate a vacation here why does she have to WORK, does anyone really care to see gal.actic perform anyway?

dec 26: yena pulls red and has to help decorating which honestly she’ll enjoy but i also just need someone to playfully fuck around w her cuz yena doesnt Do excessive labor and instead decorate her in tinsel instead because yes, yena IS the main attraction here thank you

dec 26: yena WILL spend most of the holiday ball in the indoor pool, chilling in a jacuzzi w a glass of champagne or smth, real hot girl shit, you know how it is

dec 28: lucky queen pulls blue which means she gets to go shopping, it also means she’s going to try and scam someone into spending their money on buying her pretty things, whether she’s succesful or not

dec 30: this time. yena is on team yellow and she ends up later tagging along to the spa day and tbh, id like to think she’d do a pretty convincing job at it, acting queen nam yena pop off

dec 31: if u think yena will see the new year sober ur WRONG and truly u should know better, if there is any night she goes stupid crazy its this night just saying

jan 1: god she’s going to complain the living FUCK outta the day cuz of that god damn fansign, in part cuz shes hangover and part cuz ew who even is a gal.actic stan in 2020. either join her in her complaining or lecture her ab being thankful for fans or smth!

YES MY FLUFFY BOYS

Btw this is not that fluffy bc well it’s me I’m angsty angst boy but I tried uahduajd

they first started developing feelings (in the current times) in part because being constantly surrounded by their big loud neighbors made both crave for something calm and peaceful and they found that in their small moments together.

Moments like going to lunch together after a Mercosur meeting, helping each other on boring work things, or talk endlessly in a quiet corner of whatever party they might be. They’re really comfortable around each other, both relax a lot and are more themselves than in big groups or with some other people.

Para is also the one person uru can’t say no to. Completely powerless against those big shiny eyes and that little face he does when it wants something. There’s just so much self-control a man can have in him

One hc I really like is that Sebastian, being this more serious man who tends to avoid strong emotions, is completely taken aback by how Dani is much more open about his feelings and emotionally mature, he’s not afraid to voice it and doesn’t try to look cool and detached as too many (including Sebastian) do.

And this attitude makes Sebastian sometimes be hit HARD with FeelingsTM he has a hard time containing and doesn’t know what to do with them. It takes him a while to understand, oh, is this what being in love feels like?

both but specially uru don’t have much relationship experience. They’ve had their affairs and had strong emotional connections before, maybe even a little bit of love, but nothing that he felt he couldn’t stop himself from having if he just put the on the effort.

And when both realize that new layer of love over all those shared moments from before, there’s a bit of that DenialTM. Uru is sure is nothing more than initial infatuation, Para not for a second believes his feelings could be returned, and neither wants to risk what they do have with an affair or worse, with a rejection.

I don’t have a specific hc abt their first kiss but one possibility I like is just they talking one day and Uru gets one of those Strong Feelings after something Para says and in a crazy moment of impulsiveness he kisses him. It’s not like Uruguay to have moments like this, to be impulsive ever, which forces him to realize that he’s way deeper in love than he had imagined.

Another possibility is Para kissing him first, and then Uru kinda rejects him bc he doesnt know how to deal with Strong Feelings and would hate more than anything in the world to end up hurting Dani later. So like things get really weird for a few days or weeks until baby realizes he’s being an idiot and go kiss his man back like he should have.

They decide to keep it a secret for a while, mostly because they know Martins reaction will be.... something. Also because both kinda still feel like this is just a fragile little crush from the other and telling it to people might make it too real. So for a long time (maybe years!) they don’t tell a soul.

At first they are very very careful with the secret but after a while they’re just trying to see how many times they can kiss behind martin’s back or have sex in his bedroom, hold hands under the table, sext during dinner, etc, without getting caught.

But is during this time they develop some habits that stay with them forever, like having most of their dates are their own homes and trying to make the best out of it, going to small distant towns on the weekends where they can’t easily be recognized, boat rides to the middle of nowhere that end in a picnic on a hiding spot, etc.

okay so for your DR insert, what would her relationships with the other characters be like? romantic or platonic!

Ya want like…all them //kicked (we know I would sit there for an hour tellin ya all them so lets do a few)

She’s surprising decent friends with Naegi! They met through the Future Foundation and she and him became friendly thanks to her assisting his little “project” with the Neo World Program. He came into her life at a time that she really needed someone like him. Someone hopeful as he was for the future of the 77th class especially. She was fine with covering and assisting him with what he needed and when. Not to mention he’s a kind person so it was nice to have that sort of friendship when dealing with a lot of nonsense. They still hang out now and then for lunch when they have time.

Another obvious friend relationship she has is with Mitarai. As established prior, they are quite familiar with each other, enough to allow her to just appear at his place without much pre warning. They first met in late grade school and Dakota more or less admired his talent, especially since the two of their talents are very close to the other. And as addressed before as well, a lot of their relationship is almost fabricated by Dakota in a lot of ways. Not that it’s necessarily a bad or abusive relationship but more akin to she seems to act as if they are closer than how Mitarai really feels about it. He has spent his whole life with a wall around himself due to being bullied so he sort of doesn’t want or even believe he and Dakota could be friends. Heck he probably doesn’t understand how to be friends considering he spent majority of his life working on his craft. He just tolerated her and there is this apparent hidden annoyance with her if she gets to be too loud or troublesome. It isn’t until Impostor comes into the picture and he learns to sort of rely on him as well as be aware of the friendship that develops between Impostor and Dakota as they play the two friends very well because it’s what everyone else also assumes they are just as Dakota does. He sees what his actions do to that friendship and his supposed classmates. And it’s when he is basically almost pushed into true despair from the reality of what he helped caused that he did understand. But he got into the point that he could never fix his mistakes and dived deeper into his own negative emotions. True he interacted with Dakota more and she still tried look after him but he still feared that intimacy of friendship with someone he clearly hurt so much with his actions. Especially when the NWP became infected and Impostor was killed so quickly before Naegi and his team could try to stop it. Knowing Dakota had to witness such brutality against the person she was trying to save so desperately worn at him with immense guilt. He tried to help her though, to be there in some ways he could. He owed her that after all that had happened and what she had done for him.

But it’s not until after the Final Killing game and him finally letting go of his guilt and walls that he understood that he didn’t “owe” her and she still wanted his friendship even though he was a prominent cause of so much despair. Often, Mitarai does not feel he deserves that kindness but Dakota just bursts in all the time to tell him otherwise and makes him workout with her now. “I can’t stand the idea that you’re going to waste away, Ryota! So we’re gonna work out together so I don’t slack off and you get to finally become more than a pile of bones, k? Then after we can watch this new series I saw advertised the other day.”

Unsurprising one of Dakota’s favorite underclassmen is Gundham. She adores his talent with animals and sort of uses their friendship as an excuse to play with his animal friends. Also she finds his personality to be super interesting to the point she almost wants to make a character based on him. Which embarrassed the life out of Gundham as he claimed he was unworthy of such praise. She’s very active in wanting to help him so she can learn more about the different animals he cares for as well as getting a chance to listen to his unique speak pattern more so she can better understand what he’s talking about as she, just as most people, can be a little perplexed about what he’s talking about. Still he’s always surprisingly fun to hang around and never fails to get a good laugh out of her. Even if it might not be intentional on his part sometimes;;

A relationship that can be considered a little more surprising is probably Dakota’s relationship with both Peko and Fuyuhiko. I say this simply because there is a slight difference between the real Dakota and her AI she had put into the NWP.

While her admiration and more mature conversations are still the same with Peko, it’s interesting to note the AI Dakota seems to have a possible crush on Fuyuhiko. This could be due to, just like the others, her memory is only up to the first day of the 77th’s day of school so she has not developed her premature feelings for Impostor and they die too soon for her to grow a friendship with them. Where as she spends more time with Fuyuhiko in the program and is always fond of him in both forms. So it’s natural to assume she might has feelings for him over time, especially considering she isn’t as aware of his and Peko’s possible future relationship either.

The real Dakota has the same fondness for Fuyuhiko and loves to tease the boy over various things. One especially being when his more true and kinder personality slips here or there. The typical over the top reaction always gets a kick out Dakota as she’s pretty unaffected by his flavorful use of curses. You can tell she’s been hanging out with him too much when she is dropping f bombs more often without a care. She also just as an infinity for suits so she likes dragging him out to get him a cool new look to impress his peers.

Byakuya Togami - Hate ‘im. Stuck up and rude af. The reason AI Dakota was pretty distant with Twogami at first.

Aoi Asahina - Ball of joy, brings great snacks. Give me all the swim time.

Kyoko Kirigiri - So pretty and mysterious~ Reminds her of Peko…Will rely on her for more intense situations.

DR2 cast:

Hajime Hinata - Very friendly with him and respects him quite a lot. Even after he and Izuru become one being. Calls him Hinazru sometimes as a joke.

could you explain ouma's opinion on kiibo? correct me if im wrong, but ouma doesnt see kiibo as a person, and i couldnt help but have something cross my mind.. what if ouma used kiibo as the sacrifice rather than gonta? could you explain why this isnt possible or why ouma wouldnt/didnt do this? ouma values all lives of course, but do you think it would have inflicted him less to manipulate someone he doesnt consider human (plus knowing kiibos true purpose) sorry if i already sent this question

Ouma suspected that Kiibo wasconnected to the ndrv3 audience in some way, and thought of Kiibo as “strange/weird”according to his whiteboard, where he singled his picture out in a differentway from how he singled out Saihara’s picture. Given all the incongruities,both about Kiibo’s backstory and his talent, Ouma was suspicious of him, and that’swhy he’s particularly hard on him sometimes. He teased him endlessly aboutbeing a robot and became noticeablybored/fed-up whenever Kiibo would talk about his memories or his past—because Oumahighly suspected those things were fake, even moreso than everyone else’sbackstories.

However, Ouma definitely couldn’tbring himself to think of Kiibo as “not a person.” Not human, perhaps, butevery bit of evidence points to the fact that no matter how hard he tried, hecouldn’t help but think of Kiibo as an individual with his own autonomy, freewill, etc. Things would have been considerably easier for him if he had beenable to think of Kiibo as an object, rather than a person—but that wouldclearly have been a lie, and Ouma knew it. I think a part of him was genuinelyfrustrated that he couldn’t think of Kiibo in those terms, despite the factthat Kiibo was so clearly sketchy, and so obviously involved somehow with theaudience watching the killing game.

Had Ouma really thought ofKiibo as “not a person” then he would’ve had no problems with disabling him orbreaking him so that he couldn’t function as an audience proxy anymore. If he’dreally ever genuinely thought of him as “just a robot” and “not alive,” thenthat wouldn’t have violated his moral code against killing at all, and he mostlikely would have done so because that would have been the safer option formaking sure no one was spying on them.

He had several opportunities todo this over the course of the game. The electric hammers that he commissionedMiu to make were more than capable of frying Kiibo, if it turns out that shesaw him as a robot rather than a person. They were programmed to work onmachines, not people. When Ouma tells them this in Chapter 5, Kiibo wondersaloud how Miu perceived him, and almost considers asking someone to try out oneof the hammers on him, but Ouma cheekily tells him that if it turns out she sawhim as a machine, then those hammers would fry his circuits pretty badly.

Given Ouma’s possession of thehammers, the remote control capable of hijacking electronic devices, and theelectric bombs capable of jamming signals, he could easily have broken Kiiboany time he wanted to. The fact that he didn’t do this despite all his teasingabout Kiibo being “just a robot” is pretty solid proof that he couldn’tactually bring himself to think like that, no matter how much it might havesimplified matters. He was suspicious of him, and Kiibo had obvious ties to theoutside world in some way or other, but he was also very obviously strugglingto become his own person, and that was something I think Ouma couldn’t help butrespect, no matter how much he wouldn’t admit to it.

The reason he didn’t use Kiiboas a sacrifice instead of Gonta is largely because Ouma didn’t go into the VRworld with a specific sacrifice in mind. He knew he would have to counter Miu’splan, and he knew he would need someone else to kill her in his place if hewanted to stay alive, but it’s obvious he didn’t have a specific person in mindat first.

It’s not until he commented aboutgoing outside to start looking around and Gonta volunteered to go with him inorder to protect him that he began talking under his breath, making commentsabout Gonta “being his bodyguard” and saying things like “If it’s Gonta, thenmaybe…” Clearly, up until the moment he knew he and Gonta could be alone whenfinding the remember light, he had no idea who would be the best person to tryand enlist into his plan.

Had Kiibo volunteered to go withhim instead, then there is a slight chance Ouma would have tried the same thingwith him. I believe there are several people he would never have tried toenlist in his plan even if he had had an opportunity to be alone with them.Saihara, for one, because he probably couldn’t have brought himself to do thatto someone he himself admits he was falling in love with. Maki, for another,since even if she watched the remember light, the chances of her cooperatingwith him for any reason were slim to none. And Miu, of course, since she wasthe one who was trying to kill him in the first place.

That meant his options for asacrificial pawn were limited to Gonta, Kiibo, Himiko, Tsumugi, and Momota.Momota is another iffy candidate in my opinion, because like Maki, he and Oumararely saw eye to eye on anything prior to Chapter 5. And the only reasonMomota was willing to cooperate with Ouma to the extent he did in Chapter 5 wasbecause he learned quite a few painful lessons about how wrong the “trusteveryone, don’t doubt your friends” mindset was that he stuck to in Chapter 4.Tsumugi, of course, might have seemed like a possible candidate to Ouma, but wethe players know she would never have gone along with it because she was theringleader. So that leaves just Gonta, Kiibo, and Himiko.

Had either Kiibo or Himiko gonealone with Ouma to find the remember light, then it’s possible he would have had to try and enlist their help. Hedidn’t particularly have a lot of time or options available to him; once theywere in the VR world, he needed to act fast in order to stop Miu’s plan. But nomatter who had gone along with him, I think it still would have pained him.Clearly he did value Kiibo’s life as an individual on the same level as everyoneelse’s; I don’t think there was any option in that scenario that would have “hurthim less” or “hurt him more.” Being forced into a situation where he had tobreak his moral code at all was painful enough.

Not only that, but I’m notentirely sure Kiibo wouldn’t have seen through what he was trying to do had hebeen the one alone with Ouma. Even if he had watched the remember light, it’sdoubtful whether Kiibo would’ve resorted to murder. Suicide, perhaps, becauseeveryone became suicidal and depressed upon knowing “the truth of the outsideworld”—but due both to Kiibo’s own personal belief in maintaining hope in thedarkest of times, as well as the audience input via his “inner voice,” I doubthe would’ve killed anyone.

Kiibo also has quite asurprising knack for understanding Ouma more instinctively than many other membersin the group. By Chapter 5 especially, Kiibo is the only one who sayspoint-blank that he doesn’t think Ouma had any reason to lie on his deathbed.His bonus mode interaction with Ouma shows that while he clearly gets fed upwith Ouma’s teasing and all the “robot discrimination,” he also recognizes itfor what it is: a bratty kid demanding attention. And he grasps the heart ofOuma’s character, too, stating that it’s not about whether Ouma is telling thetruth or lying, because either way, they’re friends and that’s what matters themost.

All of these things suggest tome that despite seeming kind of endearingly clumsy and incapable of reading themood sometimes, Kiibo is someone with a very intuitive knack for catching ontothings. If Saihara was the one who Ouma wanted to “solve” him and understandhim, Kiibo was the one who understood him more intuitively—much to Ouma’sdismay, I’m sure.

My point in the end is thatbecause Kiibo was so clearly a pawn in the grand scheme of things and alsosomeone with his own consciousness, memories, individuality, etc., there’s nodoubt that Ouma saw him as a person, even if he tried to emphasize how much he “wasn’thuman.” The situation was dire enough in Chapter 4 that if push had come toshove and Kiibo had been the most convenient option, Ouma might very well havetried to use him instead of Gonta—but I don’t think that such an option wouldhave hurt his conscience any less. Either way, he clearly thought of it asmurder. If he hadn’t, he would’ve either hijacked, disabled, or broken Kiibo,because doing so would’ve been the safer, colder, and more calculating option.
