Who in ur pfp they kinda hot
Dylan Springbell, a minor character from an old webcomic (2010s) called Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet, who makes extremely fuckin funny faces and basically defined my teenage years
he's this kind of brash and very outspoken, combative violinist and a childhood friend of the protagonist and her brother. shows up pretty late in the webcomic but it's always such a treat to see him, like. look at his introduction
the webcomic follows these two neighbours, Petunia and Todd Allison, and their daily struggles in early 20th century Australia. Petunia, described as a very ordinary but perky girl, is fascinated with Todd Allison, pretty much the weirdest, most interesting guy in the world to her, and who works for the government investigating a terrorist named Violet
I want to stress the fact that most of the cast are poc, with the protagonist and most of the people in her life being aboriginal australian. which doesn't seem like much now, but back in the early 2010s this shit was revolutionary, especially because one of the themes the comic openly tackles is the racism and oppression indigenous ppl and other poc experience, the communities these minorities form to support each other, and feelings of resentment, hatred and displacement born from these aggressions
but its also full of whimsy and really funny, slice-of-life moments <3
there's a lot of characters but the main cast is very strong, every character is so unique and make very good first impressions.
the artstyle does change a lot throughout the whole thing, but listen. the fuckin covers. the paneling. the vibes. look look, these are just a few examples i had saved on my laptop
however. the webcomic is unfinished (there's only 17 chapters) and its been presumably abandoned by its author, nozmo. every single site that the comic was hosted on, including archives ran by fans here on tumblr (@tapvfans and @tapvarchive) are defunct or abandoned pretty early. the only way you can read it is through the wayback machine here
I've been archiving the main story, the sidestories and extra pages/zines for awhile now because this webcomic means a lot to me even a decade later, and so that ppl can have an easier time reading it, but i've only archived up to chapter 8 or so orz
anyway, if it caught your eye, I deffo recommend it. it was such a hidden gem <3
#todd allison and the petunia violet#tapv#i have the full fucking webcomic in a discord thread in one of the servers im in#so that all of my friends who are interested can read it#but its incomplete. missing side content. or lacking in quality#you guys dont know obscure until youre the only person in this webbed site posting abt it

"You have to trust the writers!" "The writers know what they're doing!" "Television is a long-form medium; you need to be patient!"
*Me, swimming in an Olympic-sized pool of dropped plot threads from 30 years of TV I've personally watched*: "Sure babe whatever you say"
#allison rambles#love the optimism kids#don't have a drop of it myself which of course is what the fanfiction is for#it's interesting that this whole 'trust the writers' rhetoric seems more prevalent as more and more shows get canceled after 1 season#also i am 150% sure a lot of these dropped threads are the fault of studio execs#but also limited run shows are the only ones I've seen not have this problem#honestly a long-running tv show and a 80-chapter-and-counting fic are the same animal to me#although at least in the fic one of your main characters doesn't usually get a role in another fic and leave yours#'what show are you vague-blogging?' well babe about 6 at once actually

for @downs1de, from here. ♡
does she miss that attitude of his? maybe just a little. it doesn't matter, though, because without saying anything, she tiptoes so she could press a kiss on his cheek, her hand lingering on his arm. it's his birthday, so he deserves a little bit of affection. even if he might say otherwise, himself. ❝ some things are worth being fired over. ❞
the kiss, or the attitude? she'll let him ponder on that.

💘 starter for @painofhumanity | Allison & Isaac!
In the blue of the late evening, Allison stared pensively at the target that she'd painted on the tree with her bow resting comfortably against her shoulder. She was getting ready to practice - no matter how good she was, practice was always important. She heard a rustle behind her, and she turned, quickly drawing her bow. ❝Issac.❞ She lowered the bow when she saw him. ❝What are you doing?❞ Her eyes met his, searching for reassurance that everything was alright.

Regency Romantasy
So...it has been brought to my attention that I perhaps have a type, and this book ticked a lot of really good boxes for me. It's regency-inspired. It's fantasy. It's a romance. It has a chronically ill main character. It has sewing and fashion. Literally 90% of the characters are LGBTQIA. It has a BALCONY SCENE for crying out loud. It even has a gossip columnist who might be better than Lady Whistledown (do NOT come for me, Bridgerton Fandom, I said what I said). I could go on, but at that point I think we would have completely dissolved from actual review to screamed list of things I enjoyed, so let's rein it in for a minute and talk A Fragile Enchantment.
I'm going to start with setting, because while this book is regency-inspired, it also plays a little fast and loose with other historical inspirations. The reality of the blight and famine in historical Ireland (and frankly also the troubles and every time that Ireland revolted against England) was that it came after the regency, but here Niamh is the first generation after a similar event and subsequent revolt in her home country of fantasy Irel--I mean Machland. She has grown up surrounded by survivors of the blight and revolt, and like everyone who reads Maus learns, generational trauma is a BITCH. So when our dressmaker protagonist is invited to make the wedding clothes for the son of the king who murdered her people, it's politically and emotionally charged. Add to that the fact that Niamh's magic is hereditary and weirdly murdery, and yeah, things are emotional as heck.
Possibly I shouldn't relate quite so hard to a protagonist who is literally hurting herself for people who ultimately couldn't give a damn about her, but that IS my villain origin story, so all I had for Niamh was compassion at how hard a position that is to be in.
Niamh herself is beautifully written, and Saft balances all the threads tied around and pulling at Niamh's heart just beautifully. Every choice is complex and fraught, and so-deeply-ingrained-she-doesnt-even-notice-it impulse to shape herself around other people's pain and grief and comfort them instead of sitting with her own feelings is just stunningly well executed without feeling dramatic or indulgent.
Niamh is so desperate for friends, and the little ring she constructs around herself couldn't be stranger or more wonderful. From the enraged, grumpy Kit to Sinclair to Rosa and Miriam, this found family is wildly unlikely and prickly, but they fit between each other's thorns just perfectly.
And speaking of people having thorns...we need to address Kit Carmine. Younger son of a mad (and abusive before he went mad) king with an alcohol problem and green magic, our boy is GRUMPY. And BLUNT. And honestly I love him for that, because those thorns are hiding a very stressed out, distinctly squishy center. And also one that is deathly afraid of hurting people, because that's also a thing.
Kit is so tangled up between rage and duty and the few people he cares about that he and Niamh really have to work to develop a compassionate understanding based on wildly different personalities. And then you add all the imperialist and decolonizing stress between them plus the fact that KIT IS LITERALLY ABOUT TO MARRY SOMEONE ELSE and it's a whole deal.
There are so many wonderful moments in this book, it was a delight from start to finish. I objectively have more to say about this book, but I want to avoid spoilers here to inspire y'all to go read this book. I promise, it's worth it. Now, go get it and read. *shoos you toward the bookstore/library/tablet/place you get your books from*

◟ ★ ⊰ closed starter. scott mccall for allison argent. @porchkissed
◟ ★ ⊰ she was supposed to be dead. scott remembered, because it was easily the most traumatic day of his young life. yet, there she stood. he knew this was allison, but he also was well aware of the curse that came with mystic. he knew what it did to lydia, he wondered if it did the same thing to her. he was hesitant on approaching, not knowing what to say. " excuse me, " he said, figuring that if she recognized him, he'd let her make that known. " i'm still kind of new here .... do you think you could help me with something? "

@queenxvixens liked my starter call
"Oh, God, no, don't-- Don't look at those, Lydia, really. They're-- They're not. . ." Allison smiled shyly as she watched her friend go through the pictures. Pictures she'd taken. It had been years since she'd picked up a camera, but after losing most of the mobility in her legs and ending up needing a wheelchair to get around, Allison had returned to old hobbies she'd abandoned for the hunt. Like photography. She'd planned on showing her best friend, eventually, she just hadn't meant for Lydia to see her pictures so soon.

Closed starter for: @words-of-privacy
———
Mason wakes to silence.
It is an unusual sensation, a calm tranquility he finds horribly unnerving. On any other morning, he would have awoken to something. On good days, it might have been to the sound of his father bustling about as he gathered his work things, or to the sound of Rose’s footsteps in the next room over as she readied herself for school. On bad days, it was often the sharp, raised tones of his father’s voice. On the worst days, it was Rose’s voice, tearful and breaking on her pleas as she attempted to placate his violent rage.
But today was the day of the annual reaping ceremony. His father would not be expected at work, which meant he was probably off with his buddies drinking themselves half to death and placing bets on which kids got picked to fight in the Games and whether or not they stood a chance at winning. It was made even more sickening by the fact that they all had kids with their names in the drawing.
He didn’t wake to an alarm because their was no school and Rose must have slept peacefully enough last night, or perhaps not at all, because he did not wake to her shaking him awake well before the sun had risen. There was just stillness and silence and the thin tendrils of light reaching through his worn curtains.
Mason sits up, stretching his arms over his head with a low grunt that sounds too loud in the quiet morning. Twenty minutes later, a meager breakfast is set out on the table and he stands before Rose’s door. He knocks twice.
“Breakfast.”

☆ and in the end, they were still just two dumbass kids that felt a little too much and tried a little too hard. Girlhood for Margot started with Ally; running through the tower together, playing pranks on their parents, sleep overs and girls days. It later turned into girls night out, and then girls night in, and sporadic lunch dates when they both had the time that always lasted just a little too long, and not long enough. Some days, Margot couldn't help but feel like despite how everything changed, nothing was really all that different.
a decade later and here they were, laying on a blanket that they'd spread out on the roof of Margot's apartment building, gazing at the stars all over again. ' found the Dippers, ' she grinned, pointing at the big one and then the smaller one. ' it's weird looking at them now and actually having some idea of what's out there, ' Margot mused. ' I remember when I was the weirdest thing science discovered, ' she teased.
