Sometimes I get reminded that Jamie was mean to Jax one (1) time and Jax 👉👈 @ Jamie for the weeks following because he thought he was hot (and him being mean was also hot) and that’s basically how they ended up together

“Colonel Jim Lawson? Yeah, he’s alright.” For a moment, it doesn’t look like he’s gonna say anymore, instead idly taking a drag on his cigarette and looking out at the Wasteland. 

Then he continues. “I don’t know where I’d be without. Me or Mace. He...the fuckin’ bastard convinced me to leave my gang, you know? I was only gonna be here a week, long enough to get the medication for Mace and fuck off before anythin’ else could happen, but...well, here I am. The first official member of the Lancers and honestly happier than I’ve been in years. 

“I don’t believe in all that ‘other half’ bullshit. No, he and I both were whole before we met one another, but I like to think we’ve made each other better. I know damn well he’s helped make me into a man I know Mace can finally be proud to call his dad and, more than that, I’m proud of myself.” 

He chuckles. “Is it too sappy to say I love him more than I ever thought possible? He makes me feel safe and cared for and I plan on spendin’ the rest of my life with him, or however long he’ll have me around.”

Five Word Prompts 

Jax wasn’t sure how long he had been sitting there, bent over the workbench, a burning cigarette between his lips, attention entirely focused on his prosthetic hand laid out in front of him. Just some routine maintenance on the limb, cleaning out the joints and making sure all the mechanics within were still at peak function. He had learned the hard way that this was necessary if he didn’t want it to lock up at the most inconvenient of times. 

Jamie had come in to talk to him at some point about Minutemen politics and their upcoming missions. A trip to Diamond City, followed by a trip to a couple of the scattered settlements nearby, and then finally a trek back to the Castle. All in a day’s work, it seemed. He could hardly complain though. He liked it here, liked serving with the Minutemen, liked having somewhere safe for he and Mason to stay every day, and, more than that, he loved Jamie. 

That love, however, didn’t spare Jamie from Jax’s antics. If anything, it made him one of Jax’s favorite ‘targets’. Right up there, next to Mason, that is. 

I love you. 

Jamie had spoken the words, as he always did, before he would leave to turn the room. However, before he leaves, he waits for a reply that doesn’t come. A beat passes, then another, and another. Jax continues working on his hand, waiting, barely concealing his grin as he does so. 

I said I love you. 

There it is. Those sweet words spoken again, words that still made Jax’s heart flutter just a little bit. When was the last time he had heard them spoken so sincerely? 

He waits just a moment, debating to see what would happen if he continued not responding, wondering how many times he could get Jamie to repeat the phrase, before finally thinking better of it and glancing over his shoulder at Jamie, smiling around his cigarette. Jamie was a busy man; he had much better things to do than stand here entertaining Jax with these simple little pleasures. Besides, Jax planned to have years to hear Jamie say ‘I love you’ over and over and over again. 

“I love you too, Jim. More than anythin’.”
