1000 words about Honey's feelings/take on one Disney Villain and yet I'm still simmering on more. All I will add here is that Maleficent in her melodramatic cartoon villainousness, (unlike Carabosse/the Wicked Fairy in various iterations of the fairy tale), doesn't much resemble the more traditional depictions of fae which Honey's characterization leans into—almost none of the Disney fairies do, Mal, the three fairies, Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, the Blue Fairy, or otherwise...(Tink's a pretty solid pixie in the OGs though).
As I nudged at, she fits a little bit too comfortably into the "good and evil" dichotomy, and doesn't have much of a contract/bargaining/etiquette system as far as the eye can see. Which is all well and good for the story ye olde House of Mouse was aiming for! I like a plain-and-simple villain now and then, I think there's an important place for stories of that kind.
For the sake of reflecting on how Honey would play off her, though, I'd love to have a little more insight which there wasn't exactly room for in the 75min. runtime. Not looking for a tragic backstory or "reason" why she is the way that she is...but, like, what's she aiming for.
Kingdom Hearts has an answer to this, but the original film is pretty vague—on her big-picture, what makes her tick, as well as exactly what nasty stuff she gets up to. We know she's the "source virtually all misfortune" in Stefan's kingdom, but what does that look like? What discord does she sow? Is it all just for the love of the game?
whatever the case may be: the kind of fairy Maleficent is and the kind of fairy Honey is are very, very different. I wonder if they'd even consider one another to be of the same species.
#musings.#( I think Mal + the other fairies are a wee bit closer to classical fae in the “Maleficent” movies— )#( but lbr that Maleficent and the OG are so completely different from one another that they hardly bare comparison lmao. )#( oooogh bird is hyperfixating about the vast and varied depictions of the Folk and Faerie again aaaaaagh. )
