“ you must be mayven, yeah? come on in; mum had to go pick up some last minute gifts, but she should be back in an hour. “ she’s never been a fan of the holidays. but she has to admit, the blending of all the typical festivities into their own personalized set of events is something she has no choice but to admire since aisling adopted her. unless anyone in the family observes certain religious traditions, for the most part, they just contribute their own rituals and watch the festivities elevate from there. today is the first of these celebrations. the day of the jonas brothers. no kidding. that’s the genuine, honest to goodness title for today. it started as aisling trying to suggest jones-mas as a substitution, then jone-mas, and then richard misheard her and started calling it jonas, and then renée, in a haze of rosé and peppermint candy canes, declared the day of the jonas brothers to be off to a brilliant start. now, two years later, they have the great pleasure of explaining the entire saga to mayven. but tina’s wiser than her age should imply. let it fall to someone else to explain the logic behind today. for now, she holds out her hand, gesturing to her coat with raised brows. “ i can hang it in the closet, if you like? and there’s drinks and snacks in the dining room, but be careful; henri gets cranky when people eat snacks before dinner, and etienne is trying to get him to agree to a road trip to some culinary fair in texas, so he won’t stop him if he starts ranting. “

“ you... must be a friend of aisling’s, right? sorry, i don’t mean to be rude, i’m just kinda new here. i’m gabriela. “ her hand extends hesitantly, a practiced motion that doesn’t quite have the opportunity to feel natural just yet. it’s been a week since she came to live here. eight days, technically, but who’s counting? and considering the first five days were spent in a blur of endless meetings, appointments, exams and skype calls, she thinks she ought to be given a little leeway in terms of familiarity just yet. but aisling did mention that some friends of the family would be joining them tonight... and she trusts these people more than she expected herself to be capable of. so surely that must mean that any friend of the family can be considered a friend of hers. right? it isn’t until a snowflake drifts in towards the doorway, landing in the stranger’s black hair, that she realizes just how rude she’s being to her new potential pal. “ oh! god, i’m sorry, come on in! the heating is on, and richard is setting up a fire in the living room, if you wanna go in there? aisling’s on the balcony, it’s just down the hallway and through the last room on the left. or, if you prefer, i can go let her know you’re here? “

“ betty, good to see ya! come on in, aisling just stepped out to get some cranberry sauce, she should be back soon. “ he tried, at least briefly, to tell her that no store in the city would have so much as a shot glass of cranberry juice left in stock tonight, but she seemed committed. and hell, if he can’t let aisling chase a crazy cranberry sauce dream on a night like this, then when can he? for now, he holds out his hand to take her coat, stepping back to let her into the toasty apartment. a bowl of hot mulled wine sits on the counter, with just two cups remaining, the spiced scent of heated fruits struggling to make themselves known above the rich aroma of gravy, sizzling bacon, and honeyed carrots. his sole contribution to the evening sits in a wide bucket by the window, nestled around frosty bottles of soda and chocolate milk, and he reaches down to collect a glass and scoop several cubes into it, offering it to the journalist with an encouraging nod. “ make yourself at home, okay? and i know you know where everything is, but renée and henri got into a fight, so they swapped everything around the place. i can only say for certain that the mustard, as of ten minutes ago, was in the bread bin. after that, you’re on your own. “

“ you must be love, yes? please, do come in, new york is much too cold for us to make our introductions on the doorstep! “ he stands tall, but the blankets that drape his shoulders make him feel much smaller than the six feet five inches he stands at. that and the mug of hot cocoa that warms his hands, long fingers wrapped around the heated porcelain as he steps aside and nimbly nudges the door closed behind her and the tiny bundle in her arms. then, just as quickly as he’d felt so small, the tiny, beaming face of the baby is enough to make him feel like a giant, a soft gasp escaping him as he sets down the mug and lifts his hands to cover his mouth in awed wonder. “ oh! this is your son? oh my goodness... oh... he looks so much like you! please, please, come in, it’s much warmer in the kitchen! or the living room; wherever you like, okay? i can bring you something to drink and eat; we can’t have you or this little rudolph catching a cold, now, can we? “

“ tess! there you are, we were beginning to think you might have bailed on us! “ not everyone, of course. aisling and stanley occupied a surprisingly serene stance when they all began to worry about road conditions and weather warnings in relation to tess’s safe arrival, and now that she’s here on the snow-sprayed doorstep, it feels almost unnaturally absurd to have ever been concerned in the first place. one arm around her shoulders, renée pulls her in for a warm side-hug, and then gestures with her other hand ( which grips a mince pie between two scarlet-nail-tipped fingers ) for tess to go inside. “ come on in! aisling’s just gone for a little training session with andrew, but she’ll be back any minute. you want something to eat? drink? ramsay’s making peppermint hot cocoa, and i swear to god, it’s like drinking literal paradise, tess. oh! and there’s a new girl! she’s up on the roof with victor if you wanna meet her? aisling took her in a week ago, and henri’s taking another hour with the dinner, so you have plenty of time to mingle! “
