observations after reading h2018 novelisation bc it’s real meticulous bitch hours...
decent read. mainly read for more insight, extra scenes and any discrepancies from film.
considerably more depth provided for allyson’s character. she’s a morning person and has seen hamilton musical 7 times... insert ‘who lives, who dies, who tells your story’ lyrics imposed over halloween scenes for gifset
she immediately recognises how much of a creep oscar is (this is continually perpetuated throughout, i feel in film he’s kind of Lite Invasive until trying to kiss allyson) whereas in book he’s outright gross: weirdly clingy as third wheel, makes lewd gestures at allyson at school dance -- this moment in particular made me ???? as to why she would let him walk her home afterwards but writer is a dood so like ........... yeah.
sartain claims that michael has been seen by 50 different psychiatrists and is going through holistic therapy that has reduced his violence, evidenced by leaving two cats in his cell overnight and them being retrieved in the morning unharmed
'when [michael] is not out here in the courtyard, he walks from this window to that window, to the other, observing things.’
in film, when aaron (journalist) approaches michael in smith’s grove he mentions victims of babysitter murders but not laurie specifically , then pulls out mask -- the only instigation michael physically reacts to by turning his head slightly
however in book: “do you remember laurie strode?” aaron asked. generalities hadn’t penetrated his indifferent veneer, so maybe specifics would. one particularly specific detail.           at the mention of laurie strode, the shape stretched his fingers -- and then his hands became still at his sides.          “did she remind you of your sister, michael?” aaron asked, seeking  a breakthrough. “is that why you chose her?”          the shape half-turned towards them.
michael doesn’t react to mask being unveiled.
karen works at a  local community centre as a children’s therapist
laurie displays an inclination towards anger around her family. in restaurant she makes a scene by her and karen yelling at each other rather than film where she broke down into tears.
the dialogue for the younger characters came off as kinda ????? not teen enough compared to the movie, but that may have been just me
there are passages from michael, or rather the shape’s perspective, but still in third-person. although they didn’t feel like they added much to horror or atmosphere as much as they were present for the purpose of plot (such as scene when michael kills woman in her house with hammer).. which is understandable considering no film visual devices but still ......... feed me prose. best detail was that michael squeezes his knife in time with heartbeat lol
‘detecting sudden movement to her right, she turned towards the window of the next room and saw the shape standing there, staring at her, their locked gaze spanning forty years.’ chef’s kiss
skipping ahead a bunch bc post is getting long . during scene where allyson and michael are in back of cop car (that sartain is driving), in the movie michael immediately starts kicking the back of the driver’s chair when sartain realises he’s awake
however in book, michael tries to kick the window beside him until:  “what greater spectacle than to reunite two old friends. michael myers and laurie strode. an historic reunion.”       cloaked in shadows, the shape sat motionless.       was he listening?       allyson couldn’t tell. his body language was impossible for her to read.       a moment of quiet passed, broken by sartain. “michael,” he said. “she’s been waiting for you. are you ready?”       sartain turned in his seat to look over his shoulder as michael lunged forward, ramming the steel barrier with ferocious strength.
michael basically fuckcikgin when ‘laurie’
end was underwhelming .... like there were so many opportunities for writer to go ham with prose for suspense especially between michael and laurie face-off but like ......... at the end she, karen and allyson don’t even get to stare at his bastard face looking up at them from the stairs bc he’s STILL LYING ON THE FLOOR .......... michael is all !!! abt laurie before but does NOT come thru at the end .
all in all there was some fun details and writer obv implemented michael’s obsessive-driven behaviour but like ..only BEFORE the actual face-off so it didnt rly feel like a cathartic pay-off compared to the film ...
hopefully in 40 years time this book will be worth 300 tho like the original halloween novelisation lmfao
peace
