starter based on this ( descent bullet point ) for @someotherdog !
nora felt the excitement settled in her bones as the trees passed by them. the drive was the worst part of it all, that's for sure, the woman never really did like to be enclosed, be it in her house, be it in a car on the drive towards their destination. it was just way too many walls for her. she was happiest when she was outdoors. every once in a while she turned to the side, smiling at her adventurous counterpart. this was the way to celebrate an engagement, right? the fact that they went along with her idea meant — at the very least — that they trusted her, and also meant that maybe they were awakening the adrenaline junkie within them. it would be amazing, and in some days they would be back home full of pictures of their time down there, time with just the two of them and no one else.
pulling over to a parking spot, or what it seemed like one, she turned off the engine and hopped off the truck, rounding to the back and popping the trunk with their backpacks and everything they would need to survive over the next few days. knowing it would only become harder here on out to rely on technology, she gets the map out of one of the pockets of her own bag and lays it on the floor of the trunk, laying out their location in front of them. "okay, we are here—" her index finger goes over where an X is marked, signaling their current location. "and the entrance to the caves shouldn't be further away from there, a little to the south?" she usually knew how her place in the world, came with firefighting training, but seeing as this was somewhere brand new, nora just wanted to make sure. "okay, it should be near this entrance," she pointed, not further from where they were right now. "you sure you want to do this?"

this moment felt like a significant milestone in their relationship, one of those steps that people often fondly reminisce about. nora had always been the more outdoorsy of the two, growing up with a forest ranger as her father. It was practically ingrained in her dna. countless childhood memories were filled with camping trips to yellowstone, family hikes through breathtaking landscapes, and the thrill of climbing challenges her father presented to her. while she hadn't followed in her father's footsteps to become a ranger herself, firefighting still provided the daily dose of adrenaline she needed. but now, with Ingrid by her side, nora's perspective had shifted. she wasn't just living for herself anymore; she had an entire future to consider, and ingrid had seamlessly become a part of that vision. in that moment, nora felt incredibly lucky. in all her previous relationships, she had either encountered partners who refused to partake in her adventurous activities or ones who wanted to solely live for the thrill, with ingrid, however, she found a beautiful balance. she didn't shy away from nora's active lifestyle, and nora was equally open to moments of rest and relaxation.
a warm, contented smile spread across nora's face as she pulled back slightly from their kiss, savoring the taste of the word "fiancé." it felt like a perfect fit. she took a step back, admiring how her gear was securely fastened around her frame. "thank you for doing this with me," nora said softly, her voice filled with appreciation and hope. she cupped ingrid's cheeks, gently caressing them with her thumbs. "i know it may not be the most traditional engagement celebration, but after this, i've actually booked us a hotel for two days up in the mountains. a chance for us to relax and unwind." her hands expertly checked and adjusted the gear on ingrid, ensuring everything was in place and the weight distributed evenly. nora closed the trunk of their truck, having secured her own backpack and the map inside. she quickly glanced at her compass to confirm its accuracy and then switched her cellphone to airplane mode to conserve battery, knowing that there would be no signal once they ventured into the wilderness.
"come on," Nora said, a mix of excitement and determination in her voice. she tugged Ingrid's hand gently, leading her towards the trailhead. "we should reach the cave entrance in about an hour and a half, maybe two if we take our time. if we're lucky, we might even catch a glimpse of the sunrise before descending."
ingrid was not an outdoorsy girl! in fact, she had always described herself as an indoor cat. for nora, though, she was willing to try. she was willing to brave the outdoors—not a completely foreign concept to her, growing up in wyoming—for the woman that she loved. the woman she was going to marry. the idea of cave exploring with her fiancée was sort of scary, but exciting too. she knew that a lot of people went hiking or cave exploring to unwind; being a lawyer, and nora a firefighter, they were understandably very stressed women. if there was anything they needed, it was some relaxation. unfortunately, ingrid’s idea of relaxing included a bottle of wine and reading a trashy romance novel in the bath, but again, she was willing to try. she would’ve done just about anything for nora, including exploring a dark, musty cave where spiders and snakes probably lived. still, she was incredibly nervous, nearly bouncing out of her seat in the truck from the way her leg was shaking. her heart only beat faster every second of the drive, nearly leaping out of her ribcage as the truck came to a slow stop.
“here we go,” ingrid whispered under her breath once nora hopped out of the truck, taking a moment to steel her nerves before hopping out herself. closing the door behind her, she ghosted her hands over her chest and thighs, making sure her caving backpack was secured over her shoulders once she grabbed it out of the truck bed and that her caver belt fit over her cargo pants—scared as she was, she didn’t want to look like it. she wanted to look the part. fake it ‘til you make it, grids! besides, she promised herself (and nora!) that she’d keep an open mind. maybe she’d even surprise herself and absolutely love it. sliding up beside her fiancée—oh, how she loved that word—she looked over the map even though she had no idea what any of it meant. “alrighty,” ingrid nodded, following nora’s pointed finger, but her gaze snapped back to nora’s when she questioned her once more. “oh, of course! i’m excited, baby, i really am.” she shrugged sheepishly, “…and a little nervous, yeah. but with the greatest cave explorer in the world by my side, i know it will be an amazing experience.” she pressed a sweet kiss to nora’s lips.

“ what? no witty remark? nothing clever to say? ”
nora looks at will, wondering how things got so messy between them all of a sudden. maybe it wasn't really all of a sudden. maybe it had slowly happened. maybe the resentment harbored itself inside until they could no longer deny it. maybe the witty remarks and the cleverness was a defense to hide how broken she was inside. she didn't mean to hurt him just because she was hurting, it wasn't meant to happen that way. it's unhealthy. it's impossibly bad for both of them. she doesn't care to hide the hurt—she's not really putting on a front anymore. the mask slowly slipping off. "aren't you tired? because i'm feeling fucking exhausted. it isn't supposed to be like this, is it? with us—" she lets out a sigh, feeling gutted. everything inside her feels strangled.

nora feels herself thaw, her resolve withering with every word that comes out of will's mouth. she wishes it was easy to just talk, to him, to anyone, but she always had a hard time sharing burdens, not without feeling like a burden herself. they worked side by side, everything nora sees, will sees, but it's clear that it all hits her differently, maybe not as differently as she thinks, but it's definitely hard to put it out there. at least in the way, it will make him satisfied. she swallows thickly, leaning on the wall behind her, arms crossed—protecting herself from whatever. "i don't know how, will—it's stronger than me, letting you in, showing you weakness—i don't know how to do that," she didn't want to fight over it, or at all, with him. not anymore, she was feeling exhausted. "i do care though, i care about you and i don't want to be in this weird place, i don't want to fight with you, but i just need time to process it, you have to give me some time to process what i'm feeling before i come to you."
"I'm tired. I'm tired of you not talking to me. I'm tired of you keeping this fucking wall up between us and just throwing in the towel whenever it seems easier than having to actually deal with whatever is going on. But tired of us? Of you?" Will's arms folded over his chest and he shook his head. "I meant it when I said we're partners. Whether it's work or home. I'm with you. But for fucks sake Nora I'm not a mind reader. Work with me here, tell me what the deal is. Because jumping down my throat, having us be in this weird place where you may care, you may not? I'm not here for that."

it was in moments like these when nora felt the emptiness her mother had left in her life. the woman would have loved her fiancee, and she was certain that she would have taken to ingrid like a daughter. she would have cooed and doted upon her, as much as her father and brother loved to have ingrid over for pizza nights. unlike her husband and children, ana maría hernandez was a homebody. she followed them around regardless of liking it or not, and she even came as far as enjoying some of their outings and had a soft spot for hooks house farm in new yorkshire, where they took her for the last sunset before she was hooked to the machines and trapped inside a hospital until her time came. not long after she’d met ingrid and fell hopelessly in love at a time when she felt reluctant to let anyone in. she’d tell ingrid how much she thought her mother would have loved her, and how she knows she would have approved of their relationship and their engagement. she’d probably be fussing over their wedding, and not entirely agreeable to nora’s choice hold their engagement celebration it in the wilderness. but nora thought the wilderness could provide them experiences a five-star hotel couldn’t, such as the breeze of the early morning wind rustling the leaves of their surrounding trees, and the scent of damp grass, not to mention—
she squeezed ingrid’s hand in reassurance. “come—” she felt a flutter of excitement inside of her as she tugged the woman along, not necessarily answering her question just yet, but getting out of their trail for a moment so they could step towards a cliffside overlooking a canyon, she stopped beside her fiance, wrapping her arms around her waist. “wait a minute,” she whispered in her ear, falling fully silent as her head fell on ingrid’s shoulder. just a few seconds later it was perceptible, from behind the lower mountains, the first rays of sunshine lightening up everything in its wake. this was the reason why she was so adamant about leaving home before the sun was up. there was little like welcoming the day in full view, besides, they might as well enjoy it, because the cave would definitely be dark enough to have little sign of sun. her sports watch would have to be enough not to make them completely lose track of time.
nora was still silent, even though the sunrise did not fully capture her attention as she was looking at ingrid’s face, taking it all in. cupping the woman’s cheek in her hand, she turned her head for a good look at her and smiled, leaning for a deep kiss, never not loving the taste of her on her tongue. “i love you,” she said when they had parted.
“to answer your question, though, no, i haven’t gone to this particular cave just yet, but i made enough research to consider it safe enough for us to explore, besides, we’ll get to explore it before anyone does,” she smiled, trying to ease ingrid’s worries. someone had to be the first, right? and why not them? she considered it to be good fun to have with her, and she was hoping to get further into the cave enough to see the stalactites. “there is supposed to have a part with a small lake that is just incredibly shiny and blue—” nora grinned, squeezing her hand. “i have the map of what the cave is supposed to look like and the best place for us to descend, you’re gonna love it, i promise just as i promise to keep you safe and warm,” the brunette peppered her fiance’s exposed skin with butterfly kisses before nuzzling her neck and taking her hand. “come on, it will be fun, we’ll have to rappel down.”
“i’m so happy to be here with you.” despite how scared she was about exploring a cave, she’d follow nora anywhere. even into the mountains where there was no cell reception or plumbing. feeling nora’s hands on her face, ingrid didn’t suppress the blissful grin that grew across her lips. she gasped at the surprise hotel reservation. “ah! you little sneak!” leaning against the palm of her hand, ingrid placed a light kiss on the skin. the touch of her fiancée had always been calming to her, sometimes the only thing that got her through a stressful day at work was knowing that she’d soon go home and feel nora’s hands smoothing over her hair or caressing the inside of her arm. it was almost enough to make ingrid forget how anxious she was then, and she mourned the loss of them when nora began to tug and adjust the gear. her brows raised suggestively as nora’s hands checked over the equipment, though she had been doing it jokingly.
she waited against the truck as nora completed some last minute tasks, rocking back and forth in her hiking boots. trying to slow her breathing, she didn’t want to look as nervous as she felt. it was a big undertaking: exploring a cave with very little experience, relying entirely on nora and her expertise, not to mention willingly being away from society—and her phone!—for a few days. if it had been anyone else, ingrid wouldn’t have even considered it. it was all for nora, the woman she loved. again, she was trying to keep an open mind. even if she was miserable the entire time, she’d still have the memory of a big, dark cave that housed bats and spi—no, no, she was getting more anxious thinking that way. she had to cleanse her mind of any doubts and just try to live in the present, and seeing nora’s cheery smile helped with that. “that sounds amazing!” allowing her to lead the way, ingrid took one last deep breath and pushed off into the unknown.
they walked along the trail with the giddiness of little girls. it was a little harder than ingrid expected, her preference for exercise was yoga or a spin class, but she kept up as best as she could. going deeper into the forest, the time passing quickly, she was starting to notice that the trail was getting a little more woodsy. a little more off the beaten path. ingrid began to worry that maybe they weren’t going the right way, or they took a wrong turn somewhere. she tried to convince herself that she was being paranoid, that she knew nothing about hiking and nora would know if something was off, she just had to trust her fiancée. there was no one ingrid trusted more than her fiancée. still, as they pressed on, she couldn’t help but feel uneasy. out in the middle of (almost) nowhere, she started to feel like they were being watched. ingrid huffed with exertion, stumbling a bit. “you’ve been to this cave before, right?” she asked, unable to remember at the moment if nora said so or not.
