The words drew a laugh from Conrad. “At ease then, Fragile. I don’t feel right giving you orders. If anything, you should be bossing me around. You’re the one with the knowledge and the leadership skills and the brains and the, well… everything. I’m just a middleman for a charity case and a couple of bureaucrats. And a pretty shitty one at that. Only reason neither side’s nuked me yet is diplomatic immunity. But I’d say I’m a pretty shitty diplomat.”

Conrad made it no secret that although he tried his best, he quite unhappy with his work. He thought lowly of himself for being able to adequately provide support for the SWORDS. Of course, it wasn’t his fault that the BSAA and other organizations were so unrelenting in their attempt to have the Six neutralized, nor was it his his fault that they were so reluctant and cold when it came to offering deals that just barely provided a morsel of respite for the team under the most unfair and skewed conditions. Conrad held no fault in the imbalance of power held within each contract. The biases of others were not his cross to bear. Yet he crucified himself all the same, always feeling that he could’ve done something or said something that might’ve changed their minds, made them see reason. Made them see the mutants as the victims they were and not the perpetrators of Umbrella’s cruelty. But no matter how many times he affirmed that their goals were the same, if always fell on deaf ears.

And that fact crushed him as much as he tried to play it off and remain optimistic.

“Think I’d make a good cargo man for your delivery service at least. But that’s about it. That’s the only job I can see myself being a good middleman in.” He laughed dryly, leaning back against the wall and returning his attention to the cigarette between his fingers. “But nah. Were it up to me, I’d be answering to you in a heartbeat. Maybe then I’d be able to mediate a good deal then.” For a brief moment, his cheeks flushed pink before moved to take a long drag from his cigarette. He hoped desperately she wouldn’t read to deeply into his words or his actions. He’d embarrassed himself enough.
