if there’s one aspect i could criticize about the writing of teen wolf it’s the in depth backstories of each character only to never talk about it again or develop it any further.

liam’s ied and past school? only used as a prop to further the plot and create conflict (angry man go punch!)

isaac’s abuse and claustrophobia? only mentioned/showed how it effects him one time outside flashbacks (motel california)

theo’s growing up and manipulation with the dread doctors? never mentioned, only lightly brushed over in incoherent flashbacks (yes it shows him being guilty for taking tara’s heart, but not the dread doctors effect on him and torture for him to get where he was)

stiles’ nogitsune trauma? only brought up as a joke after the fact (“i once had a demon living in my head LOL”)

derek hale’s past with grooming by kate? only used to show they know each other, not why what she did was wrong or harmful (doesn’t show the harmful nature of grooming and how derek’s trust would be forever altered because of kate’s abuse of his)

malia living like a coyote for the first ?17? years of her life because she “killed” her own family? “omg you can’t take her anywhere! she likes to eat deer🤣🤣”

allison’s mom killing herself cause she’d rather be anything but a werewolf? mentioned maybe a couple times afterwords

it seems as though they attempt to make the characters deep and thought-out but toss aside the trauma they have given them in order to further the new villian of the week and constant conflict. sometimes i wish that the characters made decisions in conjunction with their prior trauma or showed symptoms of how these events effected them because it’s no secret that they would. i understand that it’s a lot to ask for a super precise and detailed description of how every character is feeling, but with 24 episodes a season, tossing in a couple reflective scenes couldn’t have hurt. i fear that their constant need to one-up their villains took away from the personality and characterization of the show as it kept running.

(this is why i love this fandom so much, because yall do! thank you to the writers who write realistic ptsd or lingering effects of major events)

At the Hale mansion after rebuilding, a family afternoon. Peter, Malia, Cora, Derek and Jackson created this little time for only them. Helping everyone to know each other better as Hales. They talked about a lot of things then one day Stiles was the subject.

Derek: Malia are you really sure you don’t mind being around me and Stiles?

Malia: Really Derek it’s fine! Somewhere I knew that I wasn’t the one for Stiles. Our couple was more because we needed someone to be with us at the time! To help us get better. To anchor us. And you both look so happy! And really, you see Stiles!! How anybody can not find him attractive go over my head!

Derek smiled: Yeah! You too?! He is kind, he care about other people, he try to protect everyone and he is so damn pretty!

Peter nodded: and don’t get me started on his brain and sassy mouth! This boy is absolutely tempting !!

Cora smiled : And his smell! You know how cats react to catnip?! I feel exactly like that! Aren’t you?!

The whole Hales where nodding not counting on Jackson to have an input in this conversation. It was well known that the four Hales where strangely attracted to Stiles, but he only had eyes for Derek and they all knew how to respect boundaries even Peter. But suddenly

Jackson not really aware of what he say: And really he is so funny and courageous. I had always liked that since we were kids! And his hugs are the best …I miss that!

They all turned slowly there head toward him, eyebrows rised.

Jackson: WHAT?! We were bestfriend once! Not my fault if McCall had stole him from me!!

Derek started to laugh and everyone followed .

Derek: Stiles is indeed Catnip for Hales!

truly the saddest thing about malia is that they had the opportunity to make a significantly more "weird" girl like they should have showed her being a total freak!!! and they didn't!!! she could have shown up to beacon hills high school with 0 fashion sense and unshaved legs and 0 makeup and they could have shown this ON TV and shown that its OKAY to have all of those things and instead she's a pretty teenage girl who's just quirky and failing math

This has probably already been said but im rewatching teen wolf (im a few episodes into season 5) and im having Thoughts. It would lowkey be so practical and also silly if the McCall pack carried around an emergency bookbag or something. Like a spare mp3 player and headphones for Liam, a spare inhaler for Scott, extra hair ties, a couple spare shirts for everyone bc damn they always need one, etc. And it’s almost always in Stiles’s jeep trunk bc they always travel with it. Are we seeing the vision here.

If she wasn't born, and she wasn't bitten, she had to have been made. Made? Someone is trying to make supernatural creatures with non-supernatural means. And, whoever they are, they're somehow managing to blur the lines between science and the supernatural.

Something very important to me about the romantic subplots of Scott and Stiles is that both of them have pretty significant arcs about falling in love again after heartbreak.

Scott falling in love with Kira after he and Allison go back and forth is a bigger indicator of his character development than he really gets credit for. It's difficult to admit to yourself when it's time to really let go of someone, but particularly if that person was your first love. First loves are intense! When Scott decides to pursue Kira, the relationship we see is a lot softer, slower, more intentional than the passionate wildfire he had with Allison. They are very different, but that doesn't make either of them less real or important. I think it just shows that he's learned a hotter fire is more likely to burn out - or to burn you - so he tries something else. He still loves Allison and we can see how much it hurts him when she dies in his arms (in front of both of their current partners), but he's allowed space for that love so it doesn't stop him from moving on and being happy and in love with someone else.

Stiles' childhood obsession with Lydia is mostly played for a lark at the start of the series, but we see in that formal dance scene that there's real heart underneath that facade. His relationship with Malia starts under pretty stressful circumstances and they sort of cling to each other as unhealthy ports in a storm, but they do develop true, deep feelings for each other by season four. Unfortunately, Stiles learns his limit on how much ride-or-die he's comfortable with and they part ways, but I think the experience of what an actual mutual relationship feels like paves the way for a healthier, more balanced relationship when he finally does get to be with Lydia in the final season. Until he had that experience, dating Lydia would've come with a power imbalance because of the image he'd spent years building of her in his head. He had to grow up pretty fast over the course of the show (as all the teenagers did) and one positive of that is shedding the immature parts of his feelings for her and keeping the heart that eventually won her over.
