From Night World wiki: Lamia Vampires are one of two branches of the vampire species in the Night World, the other being made vampires. Lamia are characterized by being born as vampires, their ability to age, consume food and be able to breed more lamia children.

In addition to possessing all other vampire characteristics, lamia will age like humans, but can choose to halt this process for a certain amount of time if they choose.

However, lamia who do so must exercise great care, as if they choose to resume aging, their body will quickly age the appropriate amount of years to their actual age, which, as stated by Kestrel Redfern, "if you've been alive for five or six hundred years can be quite interesting".

Richard is a born vampire. For the purposes of this verse we are ignoring that his name doesn't match with traditional Lamia naming convention. Richard is from a family that perhaps was once well known, even considered powerful and influential, but due to various tragedies, became defunct, leaving Richard as the last member of his bloodline, no longer considered all that special or important among the vampires.

Richard, being somewhat of an outlier among other Lamia and vampires, doesn't see much of an issue in interacting with non-vampires. His beliefs just don't hold that Lamia are superior to all. He is part of the Night World but he also yearns for more and has always been curious about humans and their lives. While he's careful not to break any of the rules (at least the big ones), he's lucky no one bothers to watch his every move. There have definitely been times in the past where he could have gotten himself into trouble.

“Made vampires,” she affirmed. The thing was that from being a lamia vampire, she could live as long as she wanted to, then choose to die when she wanted. However, made vampires would have to kill themselves. Death wasn’t something Kestrel had thought much of. She was in her roaring twenties, but like most of her family, she would probably choose to stop aging at some point as well. “One of my cousins changed a girl at a point. It’s an old recurring tale, they do it for love.”  Golden eyes rolled at the mention of it. Yeah, right. Like she would ever do something so stupid.

    It had been a while since Kestrel found herself in such a precautious situation. Having lived on the Redfern island for almost an eternity, she had forgotten how it felt to be surrounded by a million pumping hearts with blood in their veins that she did not have access to at her will. The sensation was overwhelming, almost dizzying. And she couldn’t deny the hunger that started to build in her stomach as she realized how much she wanted to plunge her fangs into someone’s neck.

    But not here, not now. She promised her eldest sister Rowan that she wouldn’t get into any trouble. Although she was the more rebellious one of the siblings, she knew that she’d have to remain in some sort of control. One wrong move and they’d all be discovered.

    Getting up from her seat, Kestrel attempted to flee the room. In her hurry, she had barely even noticed the female that had stepped in her path and blocked her exit. The hunger caused her irritation to grow, leaving her about to tell the redhead to get out of her way. That was, until she realized that she felt nothing when she saw her. There was no hunger for her blood. Looking into her topaz eyes, she wasn’t sure what to make of them. All she knew was that there was nothing human in this person.

Waves. were lapping at her feet, as Kestrel’s eyes were fixated upon the island in the horizon. She didn’t know how to feel about having escaped from the Redfern Island. Like her sisters, she had always longed for the real world. When her brother Ash was allowed to do what he wanted, she’d been envious and did not hold back her fiery remarks. It wasn’t fair that just because he was male, he was allowed to live outside the enclave. But there was something strange about accomplishing a goal. At first you’re thrilled, happy that you actually managed to go through it. Afterwards, there’s this emptiness. Making you wonder what to do next.
