Not Very Quick Ren Family Headcanon But Everybody Shut Up And Listen Anyway

Both Kouha and Judar will go cross-eyed trying to stay awake. They will also have those three-am melatonin high thought and get all giggly and loopy. Koumei has found them in the parlour or foyer several times on the verge of exhaustion and he usually just teleports them to their beds.

Speaking of Koumei that man has insomnia and also sleepwalks. He once stood in Kouha's doorway for thirty minutes and when Kouha FINALLY noticed it scared the shit out of him. He woke the entire castle up with his cursing.

Kougyoku has trouble speaking correctly when she's tired and will mutter in her sleep.

Kouen and Gyokuen have no souls. They never sleep. Koumei saw Kouen sleep once and he thought he was dead.

Hakuei sleeps like a Princess but very deeply. Barely anything will wake her up except for her internal clock.

Judar clings to whatever is closest to him and Hakuryuu can conk out anywhere but is an incredibly light sleeper.

AND to leave it on an angsty note, Hakuryuu has chronic nightmares and often screams/cries in his sleep. Usually, Judar is there to comfort him but normally they just platonically cuddle until Hakuryuu falls back asleep.

Hakuryuu lost his cuddle buddy when Aladdin yote him into space and so he barely got a good night's rest every day after that.

      After the fire that overthrew the Kou Empire, Ren Hakuyuu fully expected to die. To lay there as the flames licked his charred skin and seared his flesh. Praying that his little brother and sister would be safe, he let the darkness take him.

      However, time passed and he woke. Unable to see his surroundings, just able to feel the heavy chains binding his wrists above his head as he hung. A sinking feeling settled in as he realized he was trapped. Alive. He didn’t die, in fact, it seemed most of his wounds were gone. His skin felt almost smooth, the burned away flesh healed. That gave little hope.

      Soon he would discover his worst fears were true. The identity of his captor was none other than the very person who began the coup. His mother. His mother, the priests of Al-Thamen, and, by their side, Koutoku, the new reigning Emperor. No one spoke a word as to why they kept him alive. As to what he was doing here, a prisoner. Day after night he was subjected to torture, to starvation, to all manner of cruelties and manipulations with no relief in sight. His mother promised if he behaved, if he was a good boy and promised to do what he was told, that she would release him.

      Oh how he was a bad boy.

      He resisted, the thoughts of his family remaining foremost in his mind. The unknown knowledge that they were alive, that they were okay keeping his rukh bright. The hope to one day see them once more prominent. But days dragged into weeks, weeks into months, months into years. Until, finally, seven years later, he snapped.

      Hakuyuu was released on several terms. First, he would always wear the robes of an Al-Thamen priest. Second, he would obey every word, every order, he was given by another member. And third, he would never reveal his identity to anyone, no matter who they were, no matter how close he used to be. Something about this seemed surprisingly easy to agree to.

Summary:  Banished from Sasan, Mystras decides to travel to the country he has always been hearing stories of. But an inexperienced traveler doesn’t always end up where he wants to be and a lost home is always calling.

Gen 2 [Hakuryuu]

Summary: Modern AU. With Gyokuen having been out of Hakuryuu’s sight since he was a child due to the justice system, the revenge his brothers asked for is impossible for him to carry out. Finding other ways to satisfy their memories is difficult - after all, how can he know if they approve or not when they’re long dead?

Pairings: It’s not a romance fic at heart, but there is Juhaku and just a little Alimor.

(Main) Characters: Hakuryuu, Judar, Alibaba, and Cassim. But mostly Hakuryuu.

Triggers/themes/info to be noted: Lowkey an addiction fic. Other themes are grief and anxiety. I wouldn’t call it angst but it’s not particularly happy. There’s also a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to past sexual abuse.

Summary: From striving to be the perfect heir to the throne, to fighting for his life on the battlefield, to slowly uncovering his mother’s deceptions, to trying ultimately in vain to protect his family, Ren Hakuyuu has always struggled through life.

(Main) Characters: Ren Hakuyuu, Ren Hakuren, Ren Gyokuen (Arba, technically). Centers around the whole Ren family, but those three are the focus. 

Triggers/themes/info to be noted: War scenes, canon-typical violence and gore, angst, pain, betrayal, Hakubros burning to death. Moments of levity (in the form of family bonding), but not an overall happy fic. Rating: M

Hi! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to ask you about your thoughts on Magi 337! More specifically, your thoughts on Judal. I mean, he says to live life as best as you can but doesn't Baal say that that is the same answer Sinbad gave? And he still seemed to be hung up over his past since the flashbacks continued. I don't know. What do you think? Anyways, i hope you have a wonderful day!

There’s so much that I could say about Magi 337!! It’s an amazing chapter!! I’ve been waiting for a long time to get a chapter that centered on Judal. I was always hoping that we might get some greater insight to his character, what he thinks about his situation. 

So, let’s start with the thing I love the most: he’s changed, but in a way that’s consistent with his character. Baal!Sinbad noted that he ought to have a ‘noble’ answer for the question of whether or not fate should be accepted, but Judal doesn’t have one, and he doesn’t need one. He’s fighting for the sake of everyone else because he wants to, because he personally objects to having his fate controlled by someone else- not because he’s seen the error of his ways and reformed. Instead, this chapter shows that his reasons- having been abused by Arba- are just as valid as something ‘noble’ as wanting to save the person you love. Judal’s actions are no less justified than Aladdin’s and Alibaba’s, even though they’re different and arguably more selfish. It kind of reminds me of something I saw in a post once- “It’s okay if you only save one person, and it’s okay if that person is yourself.” 

I’m immensely proud of how far Judal’s come. I think that it’s incredibly rare to see the transformation of a character like this- from antagonist to ally. And, it’s something he did without the protagonists, for the most part. It was kickstarted by Aladdin, and Sinbad, Hakuryuu, and Alibaba all had an impact on him, but for the most part? He went through this recovery and self-reinvention on his own. Nobody had to ‘fix’ him, he did that himself. And maybe people still don’t get along with the version of himself that he’s come to, but the important thing is that he’s happy with who he is and what his situation is like now. 

Of course, I have to address the obvious. Judal explicitly stated that he’s happy with his life now, and it’s because of Hakuryuu. I mean, whether or not you ship Juhaku, you have to acknowledge that their relationship has been an incredibly positive influence on both of them, and they both care very deeply about each other. Aside from Aladdin, I would say that Hakuryuu has had the greatest impact on Judal and is essentially what motivated him to become a better person (not because Hakuryuu demanded that of him, but again, because he wanted to). I don’t think most other relationships in Magi have half the depth, complexity, and development, to be honest, but that’s a debate I won’t get into. 

(A tangent here- thinking back on Hakuryuu’s fight against Gyokuen, I have to think that Judal must’ve wanted so badly to be in Hakuryuu’s place. He must’ve wanted to be the one fighting her, punching her in the face, lopping her head off with a sword. Instead, he stepped back and prioritized Hakuryuu’s vengeance over his own. That just goes to show how much he cares about him, I think…) 

Lastly, I want to say something about Judal’s comments to Sinbad- both that he must have a lot of self-loathing, and that he should enjoy his life. I think that he’s saying it because it’s something he understands, and has been through himself. This fight showed a lot of similarities in their behavior and beliefs- which, I’m sure, is to show how Sinbad and Judal are not so different, despite standing on opposite sides as they always have. Even Judal kind of acknowledges it in the flashback panel. They’re similar enough that at some point, if things had turned out differently, they might’ve even been allies. 

In short, Magi 337 is the worst, I hate it and I want to die. I will read it every day for 131365329 years from now on.

As his rukh turned black, Ren Gyokuen took advantage of her son’s new transformation to try to seize control for herself through him. Through her, he came to understand just how far this world had come and the fate of Alma Torran. Together, along with Ren Koutoku and Al-Thamen, Hakuyuu plotted their next step and his seat of control.

     On the eve of his twenty-second birthday, they struck. Fire and smoke rose into the air, screams echoing across Rakushou as he and his mother looked on from a balcony. Ren Hakutoku, the reigning Emperor, fell. Feigning grief, they held a grand funeral, and the same day Hakuyuu took the throne, sealing the Kou Empire’s fate.

     Quickly the country’s regime change. The seats on the council were replaced by those loyal to him and his mother, and darkness covered the land. People came to fear him and his rule. He became known as the “Fallen Emperor”. The once bright prince, the one everyone had looked up to, had changed and no one knew why.

     History should be self-explanatory. This is the canon-verse before the fire that changed the course of the Kou Empire. Threads may take place any time before the fire.

     Born into the Kou Empire, Ren Hakuyuu was the firstborn child of Ren Hakutoku and Ren Gyokuen. Raised with expectations that he would one day be the next Emperor of the newly forged empire, Hakuyuu had to learn from an early age what responsibility was. Between studies and time with his family, reality would eventually strike hard when things began to take a darker turn for the young prince.

     Learning quickly just what war was, he came to know the truth of what lays within a human’s heart. The darkness, the cruelty, the selfishness. And a much deeper plot that ran threw the Kou Empire.

     The Kou Empire suffered a grave tragedy the day of Ren Hakuyuu’s twenty-second birthday. As smoke and fire filled the night skies and screams echoed across Rakushou, the crowned prince looked on from a balcony in horror. While most of the palace staff escaped unscathed, Ren Hakutoku, the reigning emperor, perished. A tragedy that effected the entire kingdom.

     A grand funeral was held, and the day after, after many preparations, Hakuyuu was crowned the next Emperor. It was a day that brought reluctant joy, but he was the ruler the people needed in this time of despair. Taking the mantle of Emperor with his head held high, Hakuyuu vowed to keep his people safe.

     His first act as Emperor came as a shock to most of the kingdom, as Empress Gyokuen - his own mother - and Ren Koutoku, his uncle, were banished. Outed for their crimes of conspiracy against the crown, the punishment of returning was death. Along with them went the priests of Al-Thamen. The fates of his cousins remained unchanged, their place in his court remaining as they had no part in the crime.

     Now Emperor Hakuyuu rules with a steadfast but kind hand. However, despite the effort, fear remains around every corner, as any day he knows his mother may return, and with her war.
