cassia had spent the better part of the past week trailing ezra shaw off and on. she’d had mild success, often successfully trailing him for a few hours before losing him once he accepted a fare. she knew almost immediately that she’d need to switch up her usual tactics if she wanted to see success, but she spent a few additional days tailing him as she formed her plan. eventually, she’d made the decision to approach him under the guise of needing a ride. so she smiled, as she leaned towards the driver’s side window. “can i get a ride to far rockaway?” she asked with a smile.

This is a bad idea. This is a very bad idea. But this is the only chance he gets, and Ren’s out of the apartment to grab his whole... well, to be fair, he understood that he needed a lot of luggage. And maybe better plates? He understood the plates bit. But when Ezra asks him for help, sounding like he’s five bottles deep and as if he was in trouble; the point is he doesn’t turn away from people. Even if they—even if they’re Ezra.

“I—uh, come in. I don’t—just come in.” Will looks as if he’s worried. And angry. And exhausted, but isn’t everyone with Ezra Shaw? “Where does it hurt?”

"Now how’s my favorite cab driver holding up?” Walking up, finding Ezra in front of the school where he worked, a wide grin cast itself over his face, even if he did have a metric ton of books in his hands. “You gonna give me a ride, walk me home, be a gentleman and all?”

Anger, Will learns, isn’t white-hot rage boiling over for him, no thrown plates or raised voices. No, the rage that he feels is cold, a hunk of metal that sits at the core of his chest, cracking it open with every breath. He’d called Ezra, though he hadn’t remembered what words he used. Probably a well-meaning ‘come to my apartment.’ And there he sits, he waits, knowing that Ezra has the house key anyway. His ears hear the creak of the door, and he stands to greet him, eyes burning holes into his face.

“Ezra,” he greets, with none of the usual warmth. “We need to talk.”

He’s been out of the game for a while, and he’s starting to get nervous. The knock at the door set it all in motion. This is real. They’d made plans, of course, he’d even had his friends rotate outfits for him. The moment feels surreal, the only grounding being that Will only feels lightning from his chest to his feet, as if he was supercharged and ready to run from Staten Island to the Bronx. Self-consciousness is his Achilles’ heel, and he feels as if someone shot the arrow already; even after he’d rotated all of his outfits. And the bouquet. And the little thingie inside his jalopy.

“I—uh,” he sputters, holding out the flowers as the door opens. Great first impression. He feels like a teenager again, tongue-tied and less than suave. Is that good or bad? “Hey. You look—wow. Holy wow.”

He’s been awake in bed for... a day. Trying to keep track of everything is hard; Gabby is there, everyone’s been mourning. His head feels like it’s been through a blender and there’s large blank spots in his head—as if something chewed away at the film reel before the fight. There’s a shadow first, then a man as he smiles at the person coming through the door. “I—huh. Ezra?” A grin is cast along his face, unaware. “What’re you doing out here skulking about at night?””
